The lack of buttons is not a big deal to me. I switched from a Kindle 4 to a Paperwhite 2 a few months ago, and haven't missed them at all.

With a touchscreen, the general interface is a lot better than the non-touch devices, and I also prefer the touchscreen for turning the pages. With the Kindle 4/5 the page turn buttons are very thin and right at the edge of the device - it was easy to turn the page accidentally, and awkward to use if you had the device in a case.

What I would miss though, is the Paperwhite's light.

To be honest, I ended up not using my first Kindle nearly as much as I thought I would because I never had the right lighting for it, and the lighted cases were terrible.

Since buying the Paperwhite I'm reading probably an hour or two a day now - and more importantly, have continued to do so, because the screen is always bright and easy to read whether you're in bed at night or just aren't near a bright light that's suitable for reading with.

Even in a bright room, the light helps make the page appear whiter. (hence the name "Paperwhite")

The higher resolution screen is nice too, but not a deal-breaker - especially if you use Amazon's own fonts. I do like to use custom fonts though, which do look better on the higher resolution display.

Here are some photos I took when my Paperwhite 2 arrived, in a moderately bright room:

  • Kindle Paperwhite (light on)
  • Kindle Paperwhite (light off)
  • Kindle 4
  • (bonus iPad Air)

This is using a custom font, but if you look at the A's and y's the lower resolution of the Kindle 4 is noticeable. With the built-in fonts like Caecilia, or at larger font sizes, it's less noticeable, but I do still prefer reading on the higher resolution screen.

Especially if this is your first e-reader, I would urge you to spend/save the extra $40 for the Paperwhite model rather than the basic Kindle. You won't regret it.

Here's my ideal Kindle wishlist!

  • Voyage update (I have the original and I love it!)

  • Waterproof

  • Blue light filter (for bedtime reading)

  • Slightly bigger screen

  • Physical page turn buttons

  • Better system for managing Collections of books

  • A nice official case similar to the Paperwhite ones like this - I have the Voyage and I like the Origami case I'm using, but I'd really prefer an official case similar to the Paperwhite one

  • I'd like a larger bezel actually, I think it makes it more comfortable to hold the Kindle (more room to put your fingers without covering the screen!)
u/adamsw216 · 1 pointr/kindle

I've been doing a lot of research on this since I got my Kindle keyboard recently.

I love the Oberon cases, but I like something a little more plain, plus those are rather expensive (even more than I actually paid for my Kindle).

So I was looking around on Etsy and I found the Beautiful Kindle 3 bookbindery case which I really love the look of. Plus since it's extremely rigid, it would offer good protection. On the other hand, it's still expensive, and I didn't really like the look of the birch wood when the case is open.

Then I found the Dodo Case which is made with a much sleeker looking bamboo and still maintains the whole "bound book" look. However, the price still kills me.

So despite everything, I ended up just getting the standard Amazon Kindle Case, and I figured I could save up and eventually get a Dodo case or Oberon case down the line.

u/Zippyvinman · 6 pointsr/kindle

If you look at any Kindle, Amazon offers two models, one “with special offers” and one “without special offers”. The “with special offers” is $20 cheaper than without them. Having “special offers” is just advertisements on the lockscreen of your kindle, typically pictures of books, maybe some information, and you can purchase them right from the homescreen. You can pay $20 to have them removed and have a generic background that changes, or, you can simply ask amazon support and if you’re a prime member, they’ll usually do it for free (worked for me!)

P.S.: this is what you’ll want

So do you think this is good or a little overpriced? It does look really good. I am wondering if I should buy one (reading on the laptop is hard with so much distraction). Is it easy to use (never owned a kindle before)?

You mentioned the backlight. It does seem like a very nice feature. Do you have to manually set it up?

Thanks

u/towardthefinish · 6 pointsr/kindle

Get the official amazon case...it's great. http://amzn.com/B007R5YFS4

Then pickup a cheap neoprene sleeve with it. http://amzn.com/B005KELR3A

What you have created is a otterbox-like case for it....a hard rigid shell surrounding the PW protecting it from bends, etc. and then a soft absorbent case surrounding the hard rigid case which protect it from falls, bashes, etc.

I have this setup and couldn't be more happier. I have the exact same cases linked above...the official PW case fits nicely, but a little snuggly, into the Belkin neoprene case.

If you're going to be in a wet environment, pickup some desiccants to help with the moisture issue, and use them with the PW case - maybe in a ziploc bag or smaller pelican bag/box. http://amzn.com/B00967JFMM

A word of caution about moisture: What you do not want to do is expose the device to a very moist/humid environment, and then shove it back in a waterproof/etc. bag. You need a way to get rid of the moisture - putting it in a waterproof pelican bag is basically creating a small greenhouse, because the moisture has no way to escape. Your stuff will be "dry" but it will never feel 100% dry. Electronics will suffer tremendously. This is why I suggest the desiccants. Keep a ton of them, and replace them often. Store them separately, in multiple bags (large ziploc bag, then smaller ziploc bags with 1-2 desiccants each). This way when you need 1-2 you only have to expose a small number of them to the environment. Put one wherever your most precious gear is...so in the bag your PW is in, your socks/underwear, maps, etc. They will absorb the moisture but need to be changed probably 1-2 times a day depending on how wet/humid the environment is. Read up on compartmentalization of your gear for your trip, and Good Luck!

Enjoy! I've had my paperwhite for 2 months and I love it. I purchased this for my cover and it works great!

u/SweetIf · 11 pointsr/kindle

It was recommended on here a few months ago and Im so happy I got it. Love this group. Its called Pageturnerz from amazon: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07WZ1DRH2?ref=myi_title_dp If you have any hand pain or want a better grip on your Kindle I really recommend it.

u/Shyam09 · 6 pointsr/kindle

Nicest one is the Oasis hands down, but it's also the most expensive.

Then Voyage.

Then Paperwhite.

Then regular Kindle with no backlighting.

If you're looking to save some money, go Paperwhite; if you want to go all out, get the Oasis. Buy the Voyage is you want to spend some extra money. The resolution is all the same (except the base Kindle) - 300 PPI - but different devices have different features.
Amazon provides a small comparison table, so check it out (you'll need to scroll down -- https://www.amazon.com/All-New-Kindle-ereader-Glare-Free-Touchscreen/dp/B00ZV9PXP2). You know your wife the best, so will she prefer to touch the screen, press the bezels, or need actual buttons. Touch is available on all devices, but the more premium ones have the other options (pagepress for Voyage and actual buttons on the Oasis).

It's a bit hard to point you in a direction without knowing what your budget is / how much you can afford.

u/o0oo0o_ · 2 pointsr/kindle

> 300ppi

You're looking for a 7th Gen PW, aka the PW3.

The PW4 is also 300ppi, but you shouldn't be able to get a used one yet; if someone's selling a "used" PW4, I'd be highly suspicious and probably avoid the sale.

> used kindle Paperwhite

Ebay? Amazon? Craiglist?

Whichever you choose, try to register it immediately to ensure that it hasn't been reported lost or stolen.

Instead of used, you might want to consider something officially refurbished directly from Amazon.

Also, woot had refurbished Voyages on sale a few days ago, $89 IIRC, and Amazon had the new 10th Gen PW4 on sale already in some countries. If I can find the link for woot I'll add it later.

Edit: links.

Try to buy an old kindle for $10-$35 and trade it in to get 25% off a new oasis. plus $5/$25/$50 trade in credit for trade-in depending on age/type of kindle.

https://www.amazon.com/Kindle-Trade-In/b?ie=UTF8&node=10825010011

Depending on Oasis 3 version getting you can save $67-$92... this saving I put towards the 3-year insurance and a sleeve

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B076H11FL7/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

just make sure to select gift option when ordering it so it does not link to account right away

u/NicoC72 · 1 pointr/kindle

Here is a price tracker on the current Paperwhite. It drops every so often. The current $90 price isn't shown because it's not a price change, but a one time use discount. The current base model Kindle doesn't really have a price history as it just came out, so here is the previous one just for reference.

As far as Paperwhite vs base model goes, you have to think of your use case. Like I read more at night and want to have some manga style stuff on it, so the built in light and higher resolution are big pluses. If the added features of the Paperwhite are things that you want and believe are worth the step up in price, I would save up until the next sale. You might also be able to borrow an ereader from somewhere in the mean time. I think colleges library rents them out in two week intervals, maybe your public library offers something similar? Most lend out ebooks now too.

u/Aisakura7 · 2 pointsr/kindle

Not sure if they make it for the Oasis, but I have This One for my paperwhite. It was pricey, but worth it. It's gotten wet, dropped squashed and squished and it's still going strong 3 years later. The leather is naturally wearing nicely too

u/the1welshman · 1 pointr/kindle

I personally have a magnetic folio case and I absolutely love it. Besides protecting your kindle, it also feels amazing in your hand and gives you better grip while reading. Also, it makes it so you just open the cover and your screen turns on, rather than needing to press the button. It may sound insignificant, but its a game changer for me. I highly recommend getting one.

Here's the one I have: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00EYW9DSU/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_IUNpzb89TXMW0

u/Corix · 2 pointsr/kindle

like you stated, i do probaply 90% of my reading in bed. i keep my kindle (non-touch) on my nightstand, so i honestly could not justify the price of the kindle lighted cover.

i bought this... link

its definitely not as nice as the "kindle cover" but its a fraction of the price. it has a light, and it will protect it if the thing falls, or if i decide to take it with me when i go on vacation.

hope this helps.

u/cornmonkey · 9 pointsr/kindle

Not sure if you have bad experiences with Kindle "Special Offer" editions in the past, but if not I would HIGHLY recommend you get that one instead. Not only are they cheaper, Amazon has been known to push through their own exclusive deals via Special Offer Kindles.

If I remember correctly, there have been discounts on their gift cards, steep prices cuts on electronics such as other Kindles and TVs, or more recently a Chromebook that went for $50 (I think).

I'm definitely going to preorder a Voyage. But I'm waiting on a case similar to this one.

u/atnpgo · 1 pointr/kindle

What I personally use is this. I don't think its quite what you're looking for but I am 100% satisfied with it.

It wouldn't protect from scratch while you're using it, but it does a wonderful job while its in a backpack or something.

u/ruckis · 2 pointsr/kindle

I ordered this case after seeing it suggested on here. Works great, my hand and thumb don't get tired.

u/fi_fi · 2 pointsr/kindle

I think this is what you're probably looking for:

u/jonadair · 1 pointr/kindle

I got the same one in black and have been really happy with it. Fits perfect, sturdy, and isn't that much thicker.

u/MuscleWizardcastFIST · 3 pointsr/kindle

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00U0IZD2W/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I love/have this case. Keep in mind though, this case has a natural finish (not suede). Pretty good reviews that go into more details.

u/RobbStark · 4 pointsr/kindle

I have the official Amazon cover for my Paperwhite and it's actually much easier to operate and hold in one hand. Most of that is because it's smaller, thinner and lighter. The case is also quite nice, as the entire body of the Kindle fits into it snugly rather than being attached with metal clips on the side like my old Kindle Keyboard.

As for the touch screen: fear not, for I had the exact same concern. I was worried the lack of physical buttons would be annoying. Turns out that using your thumb to tab the screen is very easy, perhaps even more convenient and reliable than the physical buttons on the Keyboard. There's plenty of bezel on the Kindle and the case its own to let me hold on without accidentally touching the screen, as well.

u/earlgreyteatimer · 1 pointr/kindle

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00OQVZDJM/ref=fs_ods_fs_eink_mt

yeah, I don't know, the sales come and go.

I do much of my reading at night. The light is nice. I can read in bed. It will last for years. It's worth it.

These are on sale all of the time. Like every 2 or 3 months.

u/westcoastal · 2 pointsr/kindle

I have the official Amazon case and I really like it. It's solid, comfortable to hold and I can use it to prop up my book when I'm reading in bed.

u/jscheel · 4 pointsr/kindle

I've got the omoton case, and it's been pretty awesome. Especially at $11. Also has a voyage version. http://www.amazon.com/OMOTON-Paperwhite-Thinnest-Lightest-versions/dp/B00EYW9DSU

Anybody know how it stacks up against the official paperwhite case?

u/[deleted] · 1 pointr/kindle

I use the Amazon case (here) for the keyboard version. There are slots on the side of the Kindle that fit tabs in the cover. It's very durable, easy to keep clean. There's something similar for the Touch, but it has neither the pebble grain nor the moleskine-style elastic closure, both of which I like.

u/admiraljohn · 1 pointr/kindle

I had something similar to that for a time but I found the straps that hold it in the case to be kind of irritating. I wound up getting an Amazon Lighted Case in its place, but that's a bit above what you said you wanted to spend.

Amazon also makes a non-lighted case for the Kindle that goes for about $30... there were issues with it when it first came out with a short causing the Kindle to freeze and/or reboot, but from what I understand that's been corrected.

My wife, on the other hand, isn't a fan of the Amazon case and uses this one, which she loves.

u/cocacola31173 · 1 pointr/kindle

I have this case and even though its a bit pricy its very nice quality. Fintie has one similar to it but don't know if its the same quality. Its very light also! I keep mine in the bedroom and my hubby says I often fall asleep with it in my hand!

I'm sure most of us will tell you that any backlit LCD/LED style tablet is not going to be great for reading books. I'd recommend something with an e-ink screen. You can get an Amazon Kindle for as low as $80 .

u/JBaby_9783 · 5 pointsr/kindle

I don’t have an Oasis, but I do have the regular version of this sleeve. I love it. It’s not too big. Very high quality.

u/viper_in_the_grass · 2 pointsr/kindle

I checked a few older threads and here are a few links to suggested covers:

Fintie

Omoton

MoKo

They all bend backwards and have auto wake/sleep. They all have different colours and designs.

These are the regular covers. There are also some neat covers called origami that fold in the back, making a little stand for the Kindle. Here's one by Fintie. Seems like all these brands have them, so just search and choose your favourite.

Note: those links are for the Paperbacks versions. If you go with the Voyage, just search for that version.

u/Endemoniada · 2 pointsr/kindle

From your own fucking link:

>Kindle Paperwhite guides light toward the surface of the display with its built-in front light—unlike back-lit tablets that shine in your eyes—so you can read comfortably for hours without eyestrain. Adjust your screen's brightness for great reading in any light.

Should I make that even bigger for you?

Now go away, you miserable fucking troll.

When I got my Paperwhite I did some research and found the OMOTON case. It's light, sturdy, and has a magnetic flap. Multiple color choices. The outside texture is nice, enough grip so it doesn't feel like it slides out of my hand. $14.99 on Amazon now. The price fluctuates though, I got mine for $10.

This one is the best but like others have said, for the $50 it costs, you could just return it and get the paperwhite.

So, supposing you had the official leather cover that wakes your Kindle up when you open it... Would that be a good way of effectively "hiding" the screensaver ads?

Just a thought.

u/Tejasvi88 · 2 pointsr/kindle

It may make difference if you read PDFs frequently. Else, for reflowable text with Bookerly, pixels are hardly noticeable. If you have not to read in low light often then there is little value for double the price.

Also check Reviews and search for terms like resolution, pixels, etc.

PS: I own one. Text rendering is better than half of the books in my College library.

Get him the Paperwhite. If his eyes don't bother him with regular books he'll be able to read on the Paperwhite with no problem.

As far as cases go, the official Amazon case is nice, but I prefer this Omoton case (better price, and better design).

Have you taken a look at the official Amazon cover? I've had mine for about 2 years now and it's fantastic. The 'leather' is starting to wear down on the corners but it doesn't really bother me.

Extra slowly, just for you:

> that the Kindle Paperwhite is not a Kindle

It's the official model name.

"Kindle E-reader"

"Kindle Paperwhite E-reader"

> supports the assertion that the Kindle Paperwhite is backlit

Do you understand the difference between using reflected ambient light and an LED-lit device? Hint, it's the spectrum of the light your retina sees that matters.

Since apparently you have the memory of a goldfish, as well as a reading comprehension of an autist, look at OPs post. That's what we're discussing here.

I have the basic Kindle, gen 7 I think. No back light, no frills. For me, it's everything I need. For $60 (cost today, YMMV, of course...), it's a great intro to the world of kindles. This one was a replacement for a Kindle Keyboard 3g, after the screen cracked. I ended up fixing it for $25 or so, and still have it, but the new one works well for me, and is my primary Kindle. I've never used a back lit model, nor needed that feature.

u/davw · 2 pointsr/kindle

You could get the amazon cover without the light and just buy a cheap book light as suggested by others. There's a used one going on Amazon for £23.55 at the moment, and as it's from amazon warehouse deals it's going to be practically new.

u/akashik · 2 pointsr/kindle

> I'm trying to decide if the 50 dollar difference is worth it.

It is. I bought my Paperwhite back when they were available at BestBuy so I was able to compare the 300 ppi version with the older screen. All other factors aside you want the higher resolution screen. It's noticeably better.

The Voyage and Oasis are higher price choices with different options, but the Paperwhite with the 300 ppi screen (in my opinion) is the base model you shouldn't go below.

u/Jacob2040 · 4 pointsr/kindle

You an find warehouse deals if you look closely. I got mine there and nothing was really wrong, just go for like new if you're worried. (also did a search for you just in Case.

EDIT: I have PW 1st generation that I got as a gift. Should I wait for a bigger price drop or a new PW model to come out?

By the looks of it, this is the 2016 model - Kindle 8th Gen (basic, with no led lights).

I currently own one and it is a nice device.

This case on Amazon is $12 and has ridiculously good reviews.

Are you using Amazon's non-lighted leather cover? There's a known problem with the old design (although they claim they've fixed it with the updated design). My Kindle keyboard froze and rebooted repeatedly until I removed the cover. I think the problem was that the clips that hold the Kindle contact the electronics inside and cause a short. Amazon upgraded me to the lighted cover for free, and I haven't had a problem since.

u/4a4a · 2 pointsr/kindle

Yes, you can see here that $99.99 is the lowest it has ever been.

u/Generator1stFloor · -1 pointsr/kindle

Eh? Are you talking about this one?

http://www.amazon.com/Kindle-Lighted-Leather-Cover-Keyboard/dp/B003DZ165W

Or perhaps you'd prefer without the light?

Those ones are in stock all the time. Or maybe you're looking for a case for your 2nd Gen Kindle? You can indeed only find those used on the site anymore.

u/eothred · 2 pointsr/kindle

I have the same kindle version with this cover: http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B004SD1ZPY/ref=pd_aw_sims_6?pi=SL500_SY115&simLd=1

Quite expensive though, but I found the reading light very convenient

I assume he's talking about the 4th gen cases such as this:

If it really is normally $37, the OMOTON appears to be identical, at $14-16, depending on color.

u/ScubaSteve1219 · 1 pointr/kindle

my go-to recommendation is always OMOTON brand cases

u/crdlb · 7 pointsr/kindle

If you're not in a hurry, you could at least wait for the current model Paperwhite to go on sale for $100, which it does fairly regularly.

u/rharmelink · 1 pointr/kindle

If you can wait, this price alert service that I use shows that they regularly reduce the price by $20:

https://camelcamelcamel.com/Amazon-Kindle-Paperwhite-6-Inch-4GB-eReader/product/B00OQVZDJM

In the meantime, if they make an announcement...

u/zaliman · 5 pointsr/kindle

Walnew Case I have been using while I patiently await an official case refresh. The only problem I've had with it is that it sometimes turns on kindle with magnets when you put in the case, so you have to make sure it didn't switch on the device when putting away.

u/finnthelab · 1 pointr/kindle

Have you seen this thing that just came out? I just ordered one. I have arthritis in my hands and I’m really looking forward to the strap on this. I’m tired of dropping my kindle.

Amazon Kindle Paperwhite Leather Case, Onyx Black - fits all Paperwhite generations https://www.amazon.com/dp/B007R5YFS4/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_GrnhzbZQB7KFB

I like this a lot! I was able to get it stupid cheap a few years ago.

u/pabloqc · 1 pointr/kindle

From the website: https://www.amazon.com/Amazon-Kindle-Paperwhite-6-Inch-4GB-eReader/dp/B00OQVZDJM

It does not support Audible, kindle basic and the oasis, they do

u/AlohaSquash · 1 pointr/kindle

I've spent a lot of time today trying to figure out the difference between the two Kindle Paperwhites that are listed on the Amazon page. I saw the $99 you mentioned, but as far as I can tell, the two listed on their website look identical. Why would one be priced higher? Is one an older edition? Neither page shows which Kindle Paperwhite edition it is which is dumbfounding.

This one is $99: https://www.amazon.com/Amazon-Kindle-Paperwhite-6-Inch-4GB-eReader/dp/B00OQVZDJM/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1525736123&sr=8-1&keywords=kindle

this one is $139: https://www.amazon.com/Kindle-Paperwhite-High-Resolution-Display-Built/dp/B00QJDU3KY/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1525729973&sr=8-2&keywords=paperwhite+3
