Highly personal thoughts on the matter ahead, having bought and returned the official Amazon case.

I find the official Amazon case to be too smooth. I want something with a bit of grip so that I don't feel like I'll be dropping it when the cover is closed. That said, with the cover flipped back and the tweed-like material under your fingers, the front cover and back of the case come into contact with each other and slip around a bit because the material is smooth and slippery.

I also wonder how much protection the official case provides against shocks. It's got that hard plastic shell, but I have no idea how that would aid/hurt its ability to protect the Kindle. I'd prefer a case with moderately dense foam that can cushion a fall.

I've got a dual-color Fintie Folio case winging its way to me right now, so I'll let you know how it fares. It and its siblings have gotten high praise all around: 1135 reviews, 4.6 stars on Amazon. It's also the top recommended case by The Wirecutter. The regular model is just 1.6 ounces, and the dual-color model I ordered looks like it'll only be a bit heavier.

Keep in mind that the Kindle is 7.3 ounces, and the official case is 5.6 ounces. Individually, both feel light. Put them together, and the combo becomes somewhat unwieldly. I understand that the two together at 12.9 ounces is still lighter than most books, but I think what's more relevant is that the density of the Kindle+Official case combo is quite high. If you made the Kindle+Official case combo occupy the volume of a paper book, the Kindle combo would probably weigh 2-3 times as much, so about 26-39 ounces. That's a cumbersome weight to be wielding with your wrists for a long time.

So, you end up with a dense little package, that can be a bit slippery, and that offers no cushioning. Perhaps the stiff plastic molding acts as a shock cage or something that amplifies the Kindle's inherent structural integrity. I don't know.

If we're talking aesthetics, my personal take on the official case is that the interior tweed is pleasant and classy, and the plastic molding that hugs the Kindle keeps the borders simple and clean. However, the exterior of the case has been treated to be a bit hard and slippery, which I find to be a minus. It would have looked and felt better being a softer leather. Above all, however, I find the curved back of the official case to be a detraction from its aesthetics. The rest of the case keeps in line with a mostly stolid, square theme, and then you have this plastic molding that adds odd curves and is a bit smaller than the front cover so that the unit appears to slopes inwards when you view it in profile. It's got a bit of an inverted trapezoid thing going on. That's probably my biggest gripe. Why couldn't the back be the same size as the front?

Anyhow, I'm going on for quite a long time. Basically, I wanted to 1.) keep weight as low as possible, 2.) buy something with more grip, 3.) and buy something with cushioning.

That's a lengthy reasoning for a $16 product, but there you have it. The official case does make a very satisfying "fwup" when you close the cover. Its magnet will never fail you. Its sides are fully protected by the plastic molding. But it's also way expensive, heavy, slippery on its leather surfaces, and kind of unaesthetic ALTHOUGH IT HAS THE LOOK AND FEEL OF QUALITY. I just wanted some more functionality from the case, and a better aesthetic.

I bought the GREEN LIGHTED COVER for my Kindle Touch and absolutely love it. The light is certainly bright enough and the case just fits very well overall. I was hoping to find 3rd party options too but I'm super glad I bought this one.

OH, I was also randomly complimented about the case on the bus the other day from a cute girl…so that didn't hurt!

u/baker_esq27 · 1 pointr/kindle

Fiancé and I both got this one. Our first kindles too. Wasn’t sure what kind of case we’d eventually want but wanted to protect them in the interim.

$9.95, works great, looks great. We love them.

Edit: lord know who downvoted this or why, but it’s a good case for $10. We got it in two colors. Both appear to be of consistent quality.

These are the two links at Amazon for Kindle-Touch Cases with built-in light (but none are available...if someone decides to sell a used one there, it may show up in the future)

https://www.amazon.com/Amazon-Kindle-Lighted-Leather-Paperwhite/dp/B004SD2562

https://www.amazon.com/Amazon-Kindle-Lighted-Leather-Paperwhite/dp/B004SD26E8

The only other option I have seen is to go to ebay, search for Kindle Touch Case with Light, then go through each one to compare the pictures carefully to decide if you think one will fit... the non-touch Kindle of that same era (the one with the big physical button at the bottom) also had cases with a light, but don't believe they will fit the Kindle Touch... the case picture above that you posted is for the non-touch Kindle

I also own a Kindle Touch that I bought used from Amazon in very good condtion, and did some looking but decided trying to find a case was just too iffy

Maybe think about using the money you had earmarked for a case into a good used or certified refurbished Paperwhite 1, 2, or 3 if you need a built-in light for indoor/night use

Of course the exact case you want may show up on ebay from a private seller... just make sure it is for the Kindle Touch... good luck!

I like that Marware case. If my lighted case ever craps out, I'm getting that.

I bought the normal Amazon Kindle cover, but it shorted out on the clips and Amazon upgraded me to the lighted case for free. So Currently I use the official lighted case (and I must admit, the light has come in handy on a few occasions, though I rarely need it).

I also have this travel pouch/bag, as it's a perfect fit for my kindle with case, and also holds my cell phone and bluetooth headset, Nintendo DS (and will later be swapped with a PSP when I get one), my e-cig gear, headphones, and a pen with a bit of room to spare. I like it a lot, keeps everything I need on the go, though I mostly bought it as a bag for my kindle and portable gaming items.

I've been regularly searching for a TPU cover to add a little more grip to the Oasis 2 just like I usually do with my smartphones. There are a few choices for the 2016 Oasis and finally one has popped up on Amazon for the 2017 model: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0791BBNKV/

The cover won't be great if you're looking for protections for a bag , but if you're looking for something easy to slip on and off by your bed for a little more grip than the smooth aluminum back offers, this might be something work looking at. It's easy to slip on and off by the bed and into a more protective case if I'm talking it in my work bag.

At 47 grams, it's about a quarter more weight, but is largely imperceptible. The fit and finish could definitely be more refined, as there are visible seams and a small bump where the case doesn't sit flush against the Oasis. The front face has a sizable lip (~2mm?) that should protect the face of the Oasis if you put it face down on a table.

As for grip, it adds a reasonable amount more grip, but it could offer more. I've had grippier TPU cases for phones. I'd say it it brings the Oasis from a 1/5 to a 3/5. I may experiment with roughening the surface up a little bit, but it's decent enough for now.

I've never heard of it, just using it as an example. I recommend the other one instead but it's not uplifting: https://www.amazon.com/America-Farewell-Tour-Chris-Hedges/dp/150115267X

Here they are, at the top in the post from "4iDragon", on this Reddit thread:

https://www.reddit.com/r/witcher/comments/35scgm/any_place_where_i_can_download_the_witcher_books/

They are in epub format. Using the free program "Calibre", you could convert them to Kindle's mobi format. The mobi format (which I always used but stopped using recently) sometimes has problems with bold text and/or cover thumbnail appearing, when using the book on Kindle, so I suggest you convert the book/books either to KFX or AZW3 and transfer them directly to your Kindle using a USB cable.

Calibre shouldn't take time to figure out even if you're new to it. I don't think you can go wrong with it, or press something that ruins the book. Once you're used to it, if a book's cover art thumbnail showing up or not on Kindle matters to you, like it did for me, you can use these steps by jhowell on mobileread forums to get the cover art to show:

" For now, if you want your KFX book to have a cover thumbnail on an e-ink kindle then you should set the "amazon" identifier of the book in calibre to the 10-character ASIN of an equivalent book sold by Amazon (if such exists.) Here are instructions for doing this:

  • Search amazon.com with a web browser for an Amazon equivalent of the book you are converting and bring up its page. The web browser address bar will have something like "https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005MZN2B2/...". The ASIN (Amazon Standard Identification Number) for the book is the 10-character string that begins with a "B".
  • In calibre select your book, choose "Edit Metadata", and in the "Ids:" field add "amazon:B005MZN2B2" (without the quotes and using the ASIN you discovered). If there is something already in the "Ids:" field then separate the new information with a comma.
  • Convert the book to KFX and sideload it to your kindle device. It should show the cover thumbnail of the book you found previously on Amazon "

Pretty much, in Calibre, use "edit metadata", make sure book and author name are correctly put, perform the steps above on that screen to ensure covert art shows correctly, apply, then use "convert books individually" to convert the epub to KFX or AZW3 (both work fine), then transfer converted file to Kindle.

    You are welcome! : )

Not many get screen protectors. Unlike with a smartphone, scratching isn't really a concern since you're not carrying it in your pocket all the time. The actual concern is pressure / shock breaking the screen. For that I think a case is better.

For the case, I've used the official Amazon one, a "high quality" 3rd party one, and a cheap Ebay one. The real world quality goes High - Low in that order, but I'd say the best value by far is the "high quality" 3rd party one - like this one on Amazon, Finite paperwhite cover

u/nermal543 · 3 pointsr/kindle

If it was $60 for Prime Day, you were probably looking the the All New Kindle with front light, not the Kindle Paperwhite. The Paperwhite was on sale for $85 I believe. They both have a front lit screen, but the Paperwhite has a sharper screen (300ppi vs 167 ppi, makes a fairly big difference) and waterproofing.

Kindles will definitely go on sale again (they usually do at least every few months) so you could wait it out. Your only other option would be to buy a slightly older model used. Maybe an older generation paperwhite or basic kindle. Amazon has a refurbished model of an older basic Kindle (167ppi, no front light) for $60 that will be in stock soon, if you want something sooner rather than later.

I think if you are able to, you should at least spring for the $90 All New Kindle with frontlight, or wait for another sale on it at least. It's really nice to have the front light, even if you don't think you need it. But that's entirely up to you.

EDIT: also a side note, there is a big difference between the back-lit screens of phones/tablets and front lit Kindles. The front lighting is easier on the eyes since it's directed down at the page instead of up into your face. So don't let this stop you from getting a front lit Kindle, it is still very easy on the eyes.

I've owned a second-gen original-flavor Kindle (2009), a Kindle Keyboard 3G (2012), a 6th-Gen Paperwhite (2013), and a 7th-Gen Paperwhite (2017, my current Kindle).

The Kindle Keyboard was definitely a big improvement over the earlier design, but the only thing I miss is its pageturn buttons, and I wouldn't sacrifice the Paperwhite's built-in frontlight to get them back—especially not when paired with a touchscreen that makes navigation and highlighting infinitely easier than a D-pad. (I literally didn't even use the highlight feature until I got my first Paperwhite; now I use it pretty frequently.) The old lighted cover was nice, but it really doesn't hold a candle to the build-in light. While 3G connectivity was a feature I aggressively sought out in earlier models, since switching to WiFi-only, I found I haven't once missed it. And the speakers I used exactly once, when I tried using the auto-narration feature while doing some cleaning, and it was so jarring I stopped after maybe 5 minutes.

u/phDom · 4 pointsr/kindle

I just bought a kindle touch and regret it a tiny bit. It does its job fine, but honestly I prefer my girlfriends regular kindle. My touch is a little too sensitive and I find I accidentally trigger page turns if I'm not holding it perfectly.

I bought my mom a (non touch) Kindle for her birthday this year with [this case] (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B005KDY756/thicatliwi-20) and she absolutely loved it.

Good luck!

u/serenityunlimited · 5 pointsr/kindle

I found this on the Kindle Paperwhite 2 page. It did not appear on the PW1 or the Voyage.

Haven't seen this mentioned before, only their Kindle Unlimited offer. I noticed it while browsing the Kindle pages, I didn't receive an email solicitation.

Pretty great offer. I ordered the PW2 from the refurbished discount the other day, but this is an awesome alternative. I wish it was available for the Voyage, though, so I could compare with that...

u/DoubleHoeSeven · 1 pointr/kindle

You should look into the Verso Prologue. It's made of leather and has a "book" look to it but it doesn't add bulk to the KPW. They've got it in red and brown with very subtle designs for each.

FWIW, I've got the Amazon KPW case and the Prologue in red and I love both of them but find myself using Amazon version because of the magnetic closure.

EDIT: I just looked the case up and it looks like they've got 3 additional styles for it. Link here.

> Can a magnetic case work with my Kindle

Yes, you can get a case that closes with a magnet, but it doesn't control the Kindle Keyboard the way newer Kindles use the cover opening to turn on and off. But it should be fine if you just want it to keep the case closed.

But the Kindle Keyboard has a unique form factor and because it was released so many years ago, options are a little more limited. The universal cases with straps are easier to find and usually cost less.

I did a quick search on Amazon and found a few with decent reviews, but YMMV. Most of them look like the same product with different names and prices. There are probably more on ebay.

Edit: The special characters in the last link seem to be causing it to break, but cutting and pasting it should work. Doesn't matter though since they appear to all be the same cases and it's not the least expensive option.

u/Sabots · 3 pointsr/kindle

Took a really hard look at that one, but I decided the Oasis needed a full coverage case because the metal is slick & cold. Ended up with one from the same company. It's 'leather' on top of a thin wetsuit layer for the tiniest bit of grip, and feels great in the hand. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07FD7L324/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Lower is better isn't a budget, let me give you some advice that i wish that had been given to me at your age. ALWAYS set a budget for any task. You need hard figures, otherwise you can fall into some dangerous traps. Also cheapest isn't the least expensive you have to consider the ramifications of ownership.

Heh. Just posted this in another thread, but

I've only ever used 3rd party covers for my kindles (touch, PW, and now Oasis2017). And with the reviews the Amazon cases have received I don't think that will change. I've been searching everyday and it looks like MoKo has one available for order now.

MoKo Case for All-New Kindle Oasis (9th Generation, 2017 Release) - Premium Ultra Lightweight Shell Cover with Auto Wake / Sleep for Amazon Kindle Oasis E-reader Case, BLACK https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0771GQ3X3/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_NORaAbACW3K0W

Not eligible for prime and only in black, but as of right now it seems to be the only 3rd party case. There are also a few sleeves (but it doesn't sound like you're looking for that).

I'm using an Amazon Basics sleeve until a larger variety of 3rd party cases are available.

u/pa-guy · 4 pointsr/kindle

Get a case. One of my cases opens up and has a strap for your hand to make it easy to one-hand the kindle. The other case will auto turn on/off the kindle as the case is opened. I kind of wish I had a hybrid, but either one of them is better than no case at all.

Other than that, I've been a happy Paperwhite user for some time and don't really use any other accessories, other than the power charger.

u/onemanwufpack · 2 pointsr/kindle

I decided I wanted sleeve instead of a case and have been super happy with my choice. It definitely has a premium feel.

Generic covers are great for the Fire models we have around here.
I also have a couple of the "lighted covers" Amazon sold as an accessory for the K3 (keyboard) versions. They have held up amazingly well since 2011.
I also acquired a couple of these aftermarket covers made specifically for the still popular K3. They've been around for only a few years and they're very well designed, including apertures on the backside of the case, to accommodate the little integrated speakers built in to the device. (Identical, brand new cases, are also available on eBay, for quite a bit less).

Ended up getting this TPU cover and it's great:

Think it will fit the Oasis 3 as well since the dimensions are very close to the 2.

I bought the Finite Kindle case in lieu of the official case and I have effectively zero complaints other than a minor strictly visual one, unique to my unit. It offers the screen on/off functionality, has a magnetic latch and I like the protection it offers. It's a tad bulky, but it can easily be handled with one hand. I don't know how the added bulk compares to the official case, so that's something to consider.

u/infoghost · 2 pointsr/kindle

I like the Moko case. Good protection and easy to take out when you don’t want a case.

I see the regular version is going for $69 here http://www.amazon.com/Kindle-Ereader-ebook-reader/dp/B007HCCNJU/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1410243704&sr=8-2&keywords=kindle+touch. And yes as he said if you're really short on cash, can opt for this one. Even this one was on sale for ~$49 a month or so ago, which was sweet.

But at current price, I would say the extra 40 dollars spent on PW2 is worth it.

Or maybe wait for few days more to see if PW2 goes on discount sale again? There are a lot of rumors flying around about a new Kindle, and September is the season for Kindle launches. But don't really think there can be any "must have" features if something new does get launched. And PW2 is quite matured already, unlike Paperwhite1 which was phased out in 2012/13.

I got this https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0791BBNKV/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1 and it's been great. Gives it the soft touch rubber feel that most Kindle have.

I know metal is "premium" but I've always found high quality plastic/rubberized plastic to be most comfortable for devices.

u/LookItsDawn · 2 pointsr/kindle

I agree with everyone else in here about just getting a basic Kindle. I just bought a kindle touch and wish I had bought a regular kindle instead. The touch is a little too sensative for my liking. I find myself accidentally turning pages when I'm not holding it perfectly.

Whatever you do, make sure buy a decent case. My friend scratched the screen on her kindle just by keeping it in her purse for a couple hours. I can recommend [THIS ONE] (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B005KDY756/thicatliwi-20) but any case is better than none. Good luck!

u/wanderjahr · -4 pointsr/kindle

This looks aimed at a different kind of animal. The marketing on the Voyage page is pretty masculine compared to the all female marketing paperwhite. Don't know why I noticed that, but I did. Looks sexy, but not enough to justify replacing my Paperwhite. Kinda want to get my hands on the Voyage to check it out though.

u/juicyfizz · 2 pointsr/kindle

I love my Paperwhite. Don't see myself switching anytime soon. Also, looks like the Paperwhite without the ads is available and in stock.

u/viper_in_the_grass · 2 pointsr/kindle

I checked a few older threads and here are a few links to suggested covers:

Fintie

Omoton

MoKo

They all bend backwards and have auto wake/sleep. They all have different colours and designs.

These are the regular covers. There are also some neat covers called origami that fold in the back, making a little stand for the Kindle. Here's one by Fintie. Seems like all these brands have them, so just search and choose your favourite.

Note: those links are for the Paperbacks versions. If you go with the Voyage, just search for that version.

I've searched extensively as well and could only find three choices, two of which don't match your preferences unfortunately. But I'll still list them since they have the flexible tpu backs instead of a hard plastic shell. Please let me know if you find any others!

  1. Young Me Shell - Just the silicone/tpu back shell without the cover.
  2. Ayotu v1: Flip-book cover with silicone/tpu back, but has a fabric/print cover.
  3. Ayotu v2: Flip-book cover with silicone/tpu back, but has a faux leather cover.

You can also consider vinyl skins. Decal Girl and Skinomi offer some, and there's probably a handful of other brands too.
u/metalbark · 2 pointsr/kindle

I like my slim paperwhite case because the fake leather or otherwise textured skin makes me feel like it is less of a tech screen item.

Also, opening the case wakes it up and unlocks the screen.

I am on this one currently.

They tell you what the conditions are that they advertise it under. More use == more power use. It's simple: If you read more than they tested, or turn on the wifi, or use brighter lighting, your battery life will drop. If you double the amount of time reading per day you can probably halve the battery life. What's even close to false about their advertising?

> A single charge lasts up to six (6) weeks, based on a half hour of reading per day with wireless off and the light setting at 13. Battery life will vary based on light settings, wireless usage. Audible audiobook streaming over Bluetooth will reduce battery life.

I'm waiting for my Fintie case to come in. It was 10.99 yesterday, up to 11.99 today. Still a bargain. See reviews here.

129.99 USD, not bad for a paperwhite with a cellular radio.

The regular Kindle that Amazon sells today is not a touchscreen either.

Found one on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/MoKo-All-New-Generation-Release-reader/dp/B0771GQ3X3/

I had a Moko on my PW so I'm considering this, but I'd rather one that had a design on it, rather than plain black.

You're correct. Notice that it's not being sold by amazon anymore, but by other outlets.

Haha. While I always wanted to visited that part of Europe, I have a feeling travel costs might eat up some of the savings ;)

I thought Lithuania was already a EURO-member, but that will probably take until next year (at the earliest). That complicates matters further.

I just check the Amazon Global site and it costs $69 there, which is just 2€ more than the price in Germany. Am I missing something?

Just get a refurbished kindle from Amazon. Same warranty as the usual Kindle.

You can wait for a price drop as well, another $20 off. (or maybe $10, but that's still considerable from a brand new one.)

They still have refurbished 7th gens (3rd gen PW) listed:

I bought my PW3 refurbished (from Amazon) and aside from getting it in a plain brown box, it was indistinguishable from new, and has the same 1-year warranty.

This isn't the basic kindle?

I have no idea which version it is, but it's not the paperwhite.
