Yes, you can play Xbox Fitness (if you have an Xbox Live Gold subscription) until December 15, 2016. Current users who already own content will be able to play that content until July 1, 2017, but new content is no longer available for purchase so I don't think you could play till then (but it's not entirely clear). Either way, I recommend doing so just to see how good it was and therefore how crazy it is that Microsoft is shutting it down instead of promoting it.
There really are some great deals right now, like this one for $279 that includes an Xbox One with Kinect and three Kinect games. I'm sure there are other similarly great ones too.
Given how cheap you can get it now, and given the content that already exists, I'd still recommend buying it--and this is coming from someone who is really pissed off at Microsoft about their lack of support for Kinect. The games I listed above are all quite fun, and more Kinect games are still coming--like Fru this week. Some of the games on my list above are must-play games, in my opinion (such as Fantasia).
I did extensive testing couple years ago for Linux. If you use Windows then I don't know. It all depends on the USB extension card chipset.
Probably will work:
Probably do not work:
Zoom in to the images of the cards and see if they have chips which read "PD720.." to get a Renesas one which I recommend. If card has only one chip it will support only one Kinect 2. There exists a few cards like this one which I have tested to support 4 Kinects.
There's a dedicated Kinect PC adapter kit. Find it on eBay or Amazon.

For future situations, I highly reccomend, buying this: https://www.amazon.com/MG-Chemicals-milliliters-Pneumatic-Dispensing/dp/B00425FUW2?ref_=Oct_BSellerC_10704395011_4&pf_rd_p=d35cdc17-a5b5-5f92-966c-e8649e5eb85d&pf_rd_s=merchandised-search-6&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_i=10704395011&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_r=FT4EK0NPGCKWTQW77PJV&pf_rd_r=FT4EK0NPGCKWTQW77PJV&pf_rd_p=d35cdc17-a5b5-5f92-966c-e8649e5eb85d for $10 Plus this iron for $20 https://www.amazon.com/HAKKO-Soldering-electronic-board-FX511-01/dp/B0072QN66U/ref=sr_1_32?keywords=hakko&qid=1564415393&rnid=16310161&s=hi&sr=1-32
and whatever solder you can find and I swear you will become a soldering expert in no time. It all comes down to having the right flux, everything else is easy if you have the right flux.
The V2 one im speaking of is this one

and besides the windows update driver i installed what others are needed? Is the github you mentioned the same name as your reddit user name?
The Kinect 2 works on my home desktop, which uses a Renesas USB 3.0 controller. It doesn't really work on my work desktop, which uses a TI USB 3.0 controller (have to reboot every time I want to use it).
I read that USB 3.0 PCIe Gen2 adapters can work. I ordered the following two adapters because they mention Renesas and Intel:
Should have the StarTech on Thursday and the TechTick by Friday or Monday. I'll let you know what I find.
PS: The Kinect 2 is definitely amazing technology for the price, but god damn it has been a pain the ass to get working. Annoying enough that is requires Windows 8, but these very specific USB 3.0 controllers?
