Raspberry Pi 2 Model B

Supports CEC. Comes with 4x USB 2.0 slots, an HDMI, quad core ARM A7 processor, 1 GB RAM, and an ethernet port. Also has GPIO pins but I don't know of any Kodi related uses for them. It is an extremely low power device (uses about $3 worth of electricity per year) and requires nothing to keep it cool (e.g., no fans blaring in the middle of your favorite movie).

Base cost is $35. Requires a microSD card, an HDMI cable, and a microUSB charger, all of which can be purchased for approximately $5 each. An existing microUSB charger, such as from your cell phone or a device like a Kindle or Chromecast can be used, of course. Optional components include a case ($10-$20 or 3D print your own), USB wifi dongle ($10+), and an external hard drive ($50+). A few companies put out bundles that include a Raspberry Pi board and various components such as this basic one and this more complete one. A wireless keyboard ($20+) can also be handy. Product links are provided as examples; there may be better deals or smarter purchases to be had.

You'll then want to use a minimalistic Linux distro such as OpenELEC or OSMC, both of which are designed specifically to run Kodi and have optimized builds for a Raspberry Pi. OpenELEC seems to be more popular and is what I use myself. Installation is easy -- you just download and write to your SD card (oh yeah, you might need an SD card reader, $5). If you'd like you can also install a "real" Linux distro and install Kodi in that as you would on a regular desktop computer. You can either store your media on an external hard drive connected to the Raspberry Pi or on a separate computer or NAS and share your files over your LAN.

Pros:

  • Cheap base cost
  • Low power
  • Very hands off after initial setup
  • CEC! Use your TV remote to control Kodi
  • Hardware decoding for h264
  • As it is full-fledged computer you can easily add in additional software such as emulators, a web browser, etc.
  • More of a DIY solution (may be a con)

    Cons:

  • A few plugins (typically they are Windows dependent) and more computationally intensive skins may not work
  • May get pricey if you need to buy all the separate components
  • Can not handle 10-bit x264 (aka Hi10p; rare outside of anime fansubs) or HEVC (aka h265) files.
  • No 4K output, max resolution is 1920x1200
  • More of a DIY solution (may be a pro)

The built-in audio is awful and not really an option, but there are some very good audio cards for RPi now that work well with simple music-oriented distros like Volumio, Rune, Moode. You can also get some now with great amps built in too, so you just need a couple nice speakers.

If you want to go cheaper, I've actually had great luck with Sabrent USB audio devices for building DLNA receivers. They're only $8 but sound way better than the integrated RPi audio.

I'm using a Mamboberry LS DAC+ and I've been very happy with it.

1.) Hmm, I have a spare Kingston 32 GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive I can use for adopted storage:https://www.amazon.ca/Kingston-Digital-32GB-100-DataTraveler/dp/B00C5K8E1AI hope that will be enough storage and that it'll be fast enough. Based on one of the links you sent--according to a Team-Kodi Member--"You should see no slow down as USB 3.0 is capable of faster speeds than the internal storage is capable of."

-I'm very surprised and would not expect a USB 3.0 Flash drive to be faster than the internal Shield storage. That seems very odd.

2.) I looked at texturecache, but I'm not comfortable enough with that command line process. I only have 6 movies added so far and removed 4 of them from Kodi. Don't think I necessary need to run it?

3.) When I go Settings --> Apps --> Kodi I see:

a.) Storage Used: 203 MB -- used in internal shared storage (this is probably the size of the app itself If I had to guess?)

b.) Clear data: 58.88 MB -- Under what circumstance would I want to clear the data, and what is meant by "data" ?

c.) Clear cache: 44.70 MB -- Under what circumstance would I want clear the cache?

Thanks for the help so far! Now that I think about it, I did look at the adopted storage solution a year ago, but completely forgot about it. :)

I use this: remote
I've had to change a few buttons around using autohotkey, but it's been the best solution I could find without spending a lot. It also has 5 learning ir buttons to control your TV, or sound system as well. The power button turns the TV on and off, one at the bottom changes inputs on the TV, and the last two changes the volume on my receiver. It's also an air mouse and has a keyboard. My wife is the same way, and she seems to like it. Good luck!

u/Nikon_Justus · 1 pointr/kodi

This is the easiest way and works great. I used flirc for mine and they are very easy to setup. For my technology impaired mother I used an flirc dongle paired with an apple TV remote , very few buttons and super easy to use.

Best is going to be a product that fits your description but a small form/factor PC is always a good option. Here is my set up.

Quantum Byte

2TB Hard Drive holds around 1000 movies ($70)

Blu Ray and DVD /r/rw drive

I use this keyboard

This suits my needs perfectly, hope I at least gave you some ideas.

I've had my eye on this for a while. I have no idea how good it is, but if you buy one, please let me know what you think of it. Looks like it would be good for the simplicity of a media remote, but also useful for the versatility of a mouse and keyboard when needed. Plus the ir can be programmed to operate your TV too. Sorry, I know this is pretty much the opposite of what you're asking. I'm sure you already know, but there are apps for basically all devices that work as a remote. It's what I usually use.

u/deeayepee · 3 pointsr/kodi

This Rii one works well for me. There is a TV program button so you can reprogram the IR to match the TV and soundbar remote. I have 2 of the bottom buttons programmed to control my sound bar, 2 set to the netflix shortcut button and another app, and the USB dongle plugged into my smart TV with Kodi installed. The air mouse is pretty neat too but it doesn't always work right. Also the instructions are lacking a little but I really enjoy this remote especially for the price. I think there is a bluetooth pairing option as well but I have yet to use it.

Hope this helps.

Technically it should work but the good folks over at r/datahoarder told me it's not ideal. I had trouble doing it that way with a Netgear Nighthawk as well. Eventually I hooked my drive up to an old laptop and just leave that running. But if you don't have an extra laptop or you're looking for a cheaper solution, you can try something like this. It's a cool little device that has a lot of functions, one being SMB.

u/archangel924 · 2 pointsr/kodi

I picked up this air mouse https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01CL3ZXGO/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o07_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1

It's super cheap and I'm actually really happy with it. I kind of wish it was backlit, they sell some that are. Works great when using my PC for kodi and chrome browsing from my couch.

I use the Blue Tooth version of this one. I used it on my Fire Stick 1st gen prior to getting a shield, and it worked just fine (works fine on the Shield as well). It may come w/ a dongle (mine did for some reason)... but I didn't need it, and just connected to it via the internal Blue Tooth on the Firestick/Shield. Has a nice back light (important for me), buttons are responsive... I like it a lot. I bought two, 1 blue, 1 white. Other than opening the blue one to test it... It sits in a box. I use the white one pretty heavily so I didn't expect to get much more than a 5-6mo out of it, but Iv'e had it going on 8mo, w/o issue.

(edit: woops.... sorry, I thought you said you preferred American ebay or Amazon... I guess I'll leave it there in case someone else asks..)

OK, I have a piece of advice for you: get a right-angle adapter that will make the stick look like an antenna. I did this with my Roku Stick (3600R) and my wifi reception improved dramatically.

This looks good: https://www.amazon.com/Cable-Matters-Combo-Degree-Adapter/dp/B00CF4G7JC

I can't speak highly enough about this remote. I have one and love it, does everything it says it does. I have no affiliation to the company, receive no benefit for recommending it. I just really love how it works.

Inteset INT-422 4-in-1 Universal Backlit IR Learning Remote for Apple TV, Xbox One, Roku & Media Center https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00M4I1BAY/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_Yip6AbCVHD9NS

u/quasifun · 1 pointr/kodi

This is what I have. It comes with the remote. You do the setup with your phone, but you don't need to phone once you program the hub. You can use the phone app as a replacement for the remote if you want. (I don't)

I misunderstood what you were wanting, you want Kodi on a tablet and a remote for the tablet. The hub is not what you want. It sounds like you already have a bluetooth remote and it just isn't working with Kodi. You could try experimenting with Keymap to solve this problem.

I have to ask though, for a mobile device, is the touch interface in Kodi not sufficient? Are you watching the tablet from across the room or something?

u/darkiron112 · 2 pointsr/kodi

Are you talking about the Plex client add-on or a server? I just bought a Raspberry Pi 3B kit and installed LibreELEC for Kodi, and I found the Plex extension to work great with it for 1080p. Not sure about 4K.

I went with this kit for $70 to get the board, the case, heat sinks, and that neat little MicroSD adapter.

u/zer0guy · 5 pointsr/kodi

ill second his opinion, i have a 4k tv. and 1080p looks pretty good and is satisfactory.
Get yourself a "Rii mini remote keyboard with mouse" it works awesome with the RP3 and kodi

i just ordered a fire tv box, which claims it can do 4k. but i haven't received it yet. so im not sure how 4k capable it is. i will find out in a few weeks once i get it.

u/spiller37 · 2 pointsr/kodi

I paired the Flicr with this Inteset learning remote and its a fantastic combo. You can teach the remote all the functions of your other remotes and ditch em. Oh, looks like there is a version 2 of the Flicr.

Raspberry Pi 3 model B (https://www.amazon.com/CanaKit-Raspberry-Complete-Starter-Kit/dp/B01C6Q2GSY). Comes with noobs that has OE as an option. Everything just works - from unboxing to running Kodi in about 10 minutes!

I am truly amazed at how well this runs. I have replaced all PCs running XBMC with these little Raspberry Pi's running OE. The only issues I have are:

  1. I have all Pi's setup to reboot each morning at 2AM. The reboot sends CEC signals to the TV (which is powered off) telling the TV it just powered on. On one older Samsung TV it causes the TV to power on as well. Mildly annoying - probably can disable CEC on Pi or TV - haven't looked into.

  2. On the main TV the sound will cease at some point. This only appears to happen when watching videos as part of a M3U playlist (cough youtube videos cough). It doesn't happen often but, at lest once per weekend. Sometimes the box will play for 12+ hours without it happening, sometimes within an hour. The fix is rebooting the Pi. I have on a rare occasion had to reboot the Pi 2-3 times in one day. This has never happened while watching a movie or TV show.

One thing that is better on the Pi than on the Windows 7 box is I no-longer get vertical black bars on playback. It was frequent but, fleeting and I think I was the only one to notice it but, skinny black lines would flicker on random spots on the screen during playback. Since going to the Pi I have yet to see this.

I use the Amber skin but, the Pi had no problem with any of the Nox's. You have to use Confluence to administer the box (mainly to get to the OE settings).

No experience with the one you posted, but I've been using the Logitech K400r and like it (which I found in the US at either Sam's or Costco).

Edit: Originally, I accidentally linked to the Logitech K400

The K400r has a dedicated home button. I use Esc for back. The F-keys also default to media keys, moving the F-keys to the Fn combo.

I have absolutely no ties to anyone for this recommendation. I would recommend looking into an Intel box for your purposes. Be aware that codec support is really important for H.265. The Raspberry Pi 3 B+, for instance, does not have a hardware decoder for H.265, so it will struggle to play such content while a $35 Android box with the S905x will do 1080P with no problem. Same with certain Intel processors so make sure you get it right.

If all you are using is Kodi, then I would recommend OSMC or LibreElec or CoreElec. Based on Linux, gets you to a Kodi screen ASAP, and you don't have to deal with too much OS fuckery.

The Fire TV stick can only play media that is also connected to the network. You have to connect the USB stick to something, like a NAS or your computer. Or this: http://amzn.com/B00HZWOQZ6

By remote, you mean on your phone or hardware remote? I use flirc usb: FLIRC USB (2. Generation) Universal-Fernbedienung Empfänger für Medienzentren und Set-Top-Boxen https://www.amazon.de/dp/B01NBRBWS6/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_bnbUDb87AGPSE

Raspberry Pi 3 is the way to go. You can have both a retro game system, and kodi.

This is the kit I have - includes everything you need except a remote/kb/m. It also comes with 4 different distro installers preloaded on the SD card, so on first boot all you have to do is select OpenELEC and it will install Kodi and erase the other distros. Then it's just configuring.

u/usafle · 1 pointr/kodi

I've got this remote hooked up to the box. So maybe these remote keys aren't the "correct" keys?
The OK/select button pauses or stops whatever I'm watching. .
