If she's doing it for the self defense, tactical pen or Kubotan. If she's doing it for fitness and flexibility, foam roller or foam peanut. Some of the girls at my dojo use punching gloves so as not to bust their knuckles when we practice hard punching against medicine balls. If she wants to increase her power, wrist/ ankle weights (no more than 1 kilo per weight though). Hope this helps!

Invest 20.00 US in this book.

It is about 30 pages of background information and reading and the rest are charts. I used to not be able to sit for long periods of time because of my right hamstring tightening up to the point of agonizing pain. After a bit of research I learned about trigger points so I ordered this book and worked a few of the points the book calls out in one of the diagrams. After a week: no more pain.

Root cause: it was referred pain from a trigger point in a muscle group I didn't even know about. Check out the book. It is the first place I go when I tweak my back or my neck hurts or whatever. It isn't a substitution for a qualified medical professional but it is an excellent place to start and has been crucial to my well being.

I recommend it to all my friends and family. Be well!

You got any good websites for some knife combat stuff? I'm an FMA fan, always interested in other blade styles.

PS all the images are hilarious. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Black-Belt-Krav-Maga-Techniques/dp/1569756678/ref=pd_bxgy_b_img_c HE'S CARRYING A BATTON, HIT HIM WITH A CHAIR!!!

These books are good:
http://www.amazon.com/Complete-Krav-Maga-Self-Defense-ebook/dp/B003ODHOMM/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1381156796&sr=8-1&keywords=krav+maga

There is a series of the books from beginner to advanced.

As for DVD, I have this series, and they are pretty good, although I don't have anything to compare them to:

http://www.amazon.com/Mastering-Volume-Self-Defense-Beginner-Advanced/dp/B0052T6XLY/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1381156862&sr=8-2&keywords=krav+maga

If you were going to try and learn from the DVD it would take a lot of practice and discipline. Learning strictly from a DVD would be difficult in my experience.

The school I attend is a member of USKMA. Our intro class is 30-minutes of intro, plus a full 1 hour normal class.

While I don't know how our KM curriculum compares to other KM schools, our school also offers BJJ and judo, and those teams compete state-wide and nationally.

Mark has a book on amazon: http://www.amazon.com/American-Krav-Maga-Mark-Slane/dp/1481093045/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1380756878&sr=8-1&keywords=mark+slane that covers the full curriculum.

So, YMMV, but I've been very happy with this school and USKMA for the year I've been doing it.

This is mine with the starting sets and reps I shot for in the beginning.

Monday - Cardio

5k. I prefer treadmill work, because I can control and measure my own pace and improvements.

Tuesday - Core

HANGING LEG RAISE
2 sets of 15 reps, rest 30 seconds between sets

SIT-UP WITH PUNCH
3 sets of 20 reps, rest 30 seconds between sets

PLANK
3 sets of 90 seconds between sets

WEIGHTED SIT-UP
3 sets of 10 reps, rest 45 seconds between sets

WEIGHTED RUSSIAN TWIST
3 sets of 12 reps each side, rest 30 seconds between sets

I also do a couple of BJJ drills that build core strength that I can't adequately explain in a forum like this and don't have a reference for how to do them. If you feel like you need more core work and don't know any of the grappling drills, look at medicine ball work

Wednesday - Rest

Thursday - Strength

This is a simple strength building workout based off access to a barbell rack. You can replace with a bodyweight routine if you don't have one. Compound movements are important.

BENCH PRESS
5 sets of 5 reps, rest 60 seconds between sets

DEADLIFT
3 sets of 8 reps, rest 60 seconds between sets

BACK SQUAT
3 sets of 8 reps, rest 60 seconds between sets

MILITARY PRESS
2 sets of 10 reps, rest 60 seconds between sets

CHIN-UP
3 sets of 8 reps, rest 60 seconds between sets

Friday - Power and Cardio

HEAVY BAG
10 rounds of 60 seconds, rest 60 seconds between sets

BODYWEIGHT JUMP SQUAT
3 sets of 30 reps, rest 45 seconds between sets

WEIGHTED DECLINE SIT UP
3 sets of 20 reps, rest 45 seconds between sets

SUPERSET
PUSH-UP
5 sets to failure
PULL-UP
5 sets to failure
60 seconds rest between supersets

JUMP ROPE
1 set of 15 minutes

Equipment Needed

  • Heavy Bag
  • Jump Rope
  • Barbell Set and Rack
  • Bands for Progression on Chinups and Pullups

I've seen results with this routine with a good diet and two-three nights at the Krav Maga gym. I've lost 15 pounds, I can see my abs, all my muscles have tone and my longevity in a fight is significantly improved.

I prioritize cardio, then core, then strength, so I will throw in a second 5k on the weekend if I don't go to the gym or climb. Exhausted fighter is a dead fighter and all.

These

Good gloves, easy to get in and out of.

u/WeldingHank · 1 pointr/kravmaga

If you just want something to work the bag with I highly recommend these

For MMA gloves These are great especially with the extra wrist support. There is even a Krav Maga branded version

And though I harp on cheap stuff, These were my first MMA gloves that lasted me 2 years without issue.

Nutrition is a big one. It especially sounds like you may be low in iron. Two signs are the bruising, and the lack of energy. Low iron means that your blood can't transport oxygen as well. Maybe add a multivitamin containing iron to your diet. Granted, bruising could also be vitamin C or K or Folic Acid deficiency.

Remember that you're increasing your activity so you need more of a number of things. For example, I use Endurox after most of my workouts. Also, if I have something that's going to be long or very sweaty (like 2 hours of jujutsu or BJJ), I use salt replacement pills to prevent cramping up.

Can hightly recommend these boxing shoes for krav maga.
Very light, durable, breathe well

MMA gloves do not do not cover your finger tips and allow you to grab things. It's what you see UFC fighters use, example:
https://www.amazon.com/Hayabusa-I4MMAG-BL-P-Ikusa-MMA-Gloves/dp/B00F4MMOU8

Boxing gloves are very large and bulky, more like mittens. It's what you see Mike Tyson and Rocky wear. You should have one pair for bag work and one for sparring. Right now you just need a pair for bag work. Women usually have different brand preferences than men when it comes to boxing gloves. Typical weight is 16oz, most gyms won't let you spar with anything less.

I think they're great shin guards and very comfortable. They don't have the slipping issue because they go over your leg almost like a sock, but because of this there's no way to wear shoes at the same time. They aren't very similar to what I've seen others use in class, which have more of a hard shell. These are moreso pads.

u/devil_put_www_here · 2 pointsr/kravmaga

I use a mesh bag by Title MMA, which is wasn't terribly expensive. I like the mesh bags because you can hang the whole bag to air dry instead of the individual equipment. I use the regular size, but I only put my sparring gear in there: shin pads, headgear, extra wraps and sometimes boxing gloves. It's a tight fit with the gloves but with some Tetris style sorting it works.

I use a different and separate mesh bag for non-sparring gear. Has my 8oz gloves, wraps, change of clothes, miscellanea (soap, deoderant, liquid bandage, medical tape, nail clippers). Basically the stuff I always bring to the gym.

With this setup I don't have carry the extra weight of sparring gear on days I know I won't be sparring.

Everyone at my school wears wrestling shoes or goes barefoot. My instructor recommended the Adidas "Combat Speed" line of shoes to me and I really like them. I wear these ones specifically:

http://amzn.com/B00C2LRYJK

I used to have a cheaper pair of wrestling shoes that had one solid piece of rubber for the sole and I found them uncomfortable when pivoting, even creating pressure in my knee at times. The Combat Speed sole is split into two pieces and, in my experience, this is much more comfortable.

EDIT: A word.
