I would steer cleer of the linked Dell Inspiron 7567. that was linked, to be honest. It uses a very low quality display. The picture is washed out and it isn't good at producing dark colors. The difference between a good display and a not-so-good one is easily one of the most noticeable things, and you can certainly do better. It's one of those laptops where the specs look good on paper, but the actual product falls short.
For gaming in particular a poor quality display can be considered to defeat some of the purpose of buying a gaming laptop: to make games look better. For gaming, I would make your priorities: Good GPU + Good Display. You will notice those the most. CPU will matter less since both the i5 quad and i7 quad are plenty for most games when paired with a GTX 1050 or Ti, RAM is easily upgradable, and SSD is easily upgradable.

One of the best values right now is the $899 Eluktronics N850HK1. It has:
Eluktronics may be less well-known than Dell, but it's one of a number of resellers who buy Clevo laptops in bulk, configure them, and sell them. Perhaps a more well-known reseller is Sager, but Sager's version of this laptop costs $100 more.
EDIT: Model I linked is the $899 1080p+1TB model which is currently sold out. Currently redirects to the $999 4K model, which uses a PenTile not-true-4K display. I would recommend waiting until the $899 1080p+1TB model comes back in stock. There's also a $999 1080p+SSD model.
---
For closer to $1200, you can get a GTX 1060 3GB

Other options:
More models I would suggest to avoid due to poor quality displays:
ZX53VW,FX502VM, FZ50VW, ZX50VW (update: ZX53VW display is good! I was mistaken)----

I would not buy the HP laptop for the following reasons:

The following Acer Aspire E15 E5-576G-5762 laptop for $560 represents the best bang for the buck when it comes to gaming performance. It is the least expensive laptop with the nVidia mx150 which is more powerful than the integrated Vega 8 graphics core in the Ryzen 5 2500u APU which is in the Dell Inspirion 15 5000 laptop. However, it is a heavier laptop at 5.27lbs and it comes with a smaller 256GB SSD.

The ASUS Vivobook K570ZD for $640 represents the least expensive laptop with the nvidia GTX 1050 which is definitely more powerful than nVidia mx150 in the Acer laptop. It is paired with the 1st generation Ryzen 5 2500u APU. It only has a 256GB SSD, and it weighs in at 4.32lbs according to the specs listed on Amazon. Be aware that the battery is usually the heaviest component in a laptop. Laptops typically sacrifice battery life in exchange for being lighter. Never trust what the brand name advertises for battery life. That is usually extremely optimistic; in this case Asus advertises 9 hours. The rule of thumb is cut what is advertised in half when doing things that are not CPU and / or graphically intensive. If playing games, then cut that in half again (if not more). Read user reviews to get a better idea though.

Acer Nitro 5 (2017 version) with Intel i5-7300HQ and GTX 1050 Ti. This is absolutely the most powerful gaming laptop for less than $700; it's $698. The GTX 1050 Ti is probably about 25% more powerful than the GTX 1050. It only has a 256GB SSD.

I purchased the 2018 version as a gift which has the newer Intel i5-8300H which is slightly more powerful thant the i5-7300HQ, but still has the GTX 1050 Ti. I can tell you that battery life is short at 3.5 hours with average usage. I assume the i5-7300HQ can get hot similar to the i5-8300H CPU. I recommend downloading a program called ThrottleStop to undervolt the CPU. Google for instructions on how to use ThrottleStop. Out of the box the i5-8300H hit 95c when I was stressing the CPU, using ThrottleStop helped reduce that to about 86c. That's considered "warm". You can leave it as is, but if you want lower temps, then the thermal paste would need to be replaced with something good like Artic MX-4 (or the more expensive but highly praised Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut). Doing so decreased the max temp to something like 77c from what I recall (as stated it was purchased to be given as a gift). However, doing so does void the warranty so if you do not want to risk loosing the warranty, then do not replace the thermal paste until after the warranty has ended.
size is a big one for students. 15.6in is good, but if you have a small pack or need it to be smaller 13 inch laptops are out there. since students would be using their computer a lot to open things like word documents or spreadsheets, so you need a fast but efficient processor and a good amount of ram like maybe 8 or 16gb, like a ryzen 5 3500u.
the amd laptops are cheaper and offer similar performance to intel laptops. look for laptops with ssds, so it starts up fast and is snappy. though ssds are small in capacity unless you need to have large photoshop or 3d modeling stuff on the laptop, ssds are definately the better option for students.
look for either high quality plastic chassis or metal chassis, as these are durable and are good for taking out/putting away a lot, and are generally light as most metal laptop chassis are aluminum these days.
you should also look for laptops with a good battery life, at least around 19~14 hours. also look for USB-C charging capable laptops as a lot of phones have them nowadays, so you only have to carry one charger if your phone uses USB-C, and you can transfer files between your phone and laptop quickly if you need to.
also look for thin designs as these are easy to carry, usually lighter than textbooks and dont make you tired carrying around all day.
here are some good examples of what i just said: https://www.amazon.com/Lenovo-330S-15ARR-Laptop-Memory-Platinum/dp/B07HGTFTZB/ref=sr_1_7?keywords=ryzen+5+3500u+thin+light&qid=1574045426&sr=8-7 according to reviews of this, as long as you remove McAfee "antivirus" it is blazing fast
https://www.amazon.com/ASUS-VivoBook-R5-3500U-Graphics-F512DA-EB51/dp/B07QQB7552/ref=sr_1_2?keywords=thin+light+laptop+amd&qid=1574045773&sr=8-2 fast cpu and good amount of storage. REMOVE MCAFEE if its there
edit:formatting
If you care about gaming, the Dell Inspirion 15 inch gaming laptop would be a good match. Downside is it's on the heavier side at 5.6 pounds.
If you want something lighter, easier to carry around, and with a more sleek look, the [Asus Zenbook 305UA](https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01BMERZJ6/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=B01BMERZJ6&linkCode=as2&tag=recom01-20&linkId=2484f37461127ac065efeb24a1af4468
) would be perfect. It has a smaller screen at only 13.3 inches, but it's a great all-around college laptop with a very long battery life, good trackpad, fair keyboard, and a good screen, all wrapped up in a laptop with good build quality.
You would still be able to play light and moderate games on the Zenbook 305UA, but expect to keep graphics on low. It could handle things like CSGO or League of Legends just fine, but don't expect heavy games like GTA V. I would greatly recommend the Zenbook.
>I'm willing to go in for a low to mid 700's laptop if it will handle downloads and run files quicker.
Slow download speeds can be due to a slow internet connection. Check your download/upload speeds here. As for running files, that depends on what type of file. Some files require a better graphics card such as if it's a game or editting software, while others simply require a better processor and/or RAM.
>What would you consider a light game?
In my mind, a light game is a game that isn't very graphics heavy and doesn't require a gaming PC/console to run. Newer AAA games such as Battlefield, CoD, and NBA2K19 will require a gaming PC, but games like Minecraft, browser based games, and essentially any game that doesn't require intense graphics to run is light.
> you have any recommendations for good laptops in the 700 dollar range that have good processing power and RAM?
While I can't exactly "recommend" laptops since I haven't used these, this laptop should allow you to run LoL and multitask with ease. Hell, with the specs you might be able to run some AAA games. It's extremely close to your $700 range, but allows you to add an SSD to work alongside the 1TB HDD if you feel it's too slow and add more RAM if 8GB isn't enough. If you're not experienced with SSD/HDD swaps/additions or adding RAM, I'd highly suggest looking up a tutorial on it before opening up the laptop or buying something you can't use.
Once again, this is a laptop very close to your price limit but it should be able to get what you want done. I can't promise that it'll be able run AAA games, but unless it's faulty it definitely will be able to multitask and run lighter games. If for some reason it can't, you need to get a refund somehow. According to Amazon, it has an 8.5 hour battery life, but that might go down if you're running a game and Chrome.
These are gaming laptops. If you aren't into gaming laptops, I recommend looking at the recommended specs of games/applications and going for a laptop with better specs. Like I said before, I can't exactly recommend laptops since I haven't used these, but I have a feeling the laptops above should be able to get the job done. You'll likely need to do some more research for yourself, like contacting the brand and asking them about if the specific laptop can do what you want it to.
These are only two examples, but there is more than likely cheaper options that'll get the job done.
That looks like a solid machine. I would suggest you also consider the Acer Predator Helios 300. This model is the same price as the Dell and I’ve heard a lot of good things. The G3 might be great too I just haven’t heard much about it.
I should mention that I’m seeing “Prime Savings $899.99” on my Amazon. I’m assuming if you have Prime you will see the same price.
The Acer has a 144hz screen, the Dell listing doesn’t seem to mention the refresh rate. Maybe just compare them, look at YouTube videos. Like I said the G3 is probably great but I personally have heard lots of great things about the Helios 300 so I would give it a quick look. Seems like it might have slightly better specs for the same price.
Good luck!
acer swift 3 14'' best bang per buck and great battery life like the 15.6'' version
acer swift 3 15.6'' like the 14'' version, but with just the intel graphics card, so it's cheaper yet still good
acer swift 5 14'' up to 13 hours of battery life and has good build quality and performance also thin as the other acers
asus vivobook S 15.6'' comes with the best build quality and is about as good if not better than the first acer mentioned, but the battery life is not as good yet still a good bang for your buck
That's about it from me and now it's up to you to choose from these and the lenovos mentioned in the other comment!
The Acer Triton 300 is the cheapest laptop you can get with a full 6GB GTX 1060 graphics card in it right now, at ~$1,049. That will max out all the games you listed without issue.
Reviews:
ASUS's GL502VM is also the same price on sale right now, and is sleeker and I believe thinner. Looks a bit nicer too, IMHO. I had two of the ASUS GL502VS last year, which are the slightly thicker versions with the GTX 1070.
Overall, a good, solid portable gaming laptop but with Gsync battery life was crap, so keep that in mind.
If you want to step up a little bit, I'd highly recommend the Acer Aspire Nitro 15" because it looks like a business laptop, not some gaming eyesore. That means you can take it to school, work, the library, coffee shops, etc. without people judging you. Plus, it starts at $1,299 so it's not much more expensive.
Beyond that, you go up in price a bit for laptops with more metal in their builds and sleeker, thinner, lighter chassis. All of the laptops I've mentioned so far are between 5.5 and nearly 8 pounds. Not the worst thing, but noticeably heavier than thin and light ones in daily use.
Start with the new Sager NP8950, which is well under an inch thick and packs the same specs as the other laptops mentioned, in a plastic and thin metal chassis. It also has a 3 or 4 zone RGB keyboard, which some people love. At $1,499 it's right at the edge of your budget, but the thinness, weight reductions, sleeker design, better building materials, included RGB-lite keyboard, and expandable storage and RAM options make it worth it, IMO.
From there, things quickly go outside of your budget with the MSI GS63VR, Gigabyte P35 and Aero 14/15, Razer Blade, etc.
I currently have a Lenovo Y50-70 and I am not a fan of it. While it does get the job done and it has served me well for the last several years, it has too many problems for me to recommend Lenovo to someone. I know a lot of people who love Lenovo for their cheap products, but I feel very burned by them.
Based on your usage, I would say that your minimum specs would be a quad core processor, a discrete GPU, and 16gb of RAM or more.
Here are a few links to ones that should easily meet your needs:

Out of all of these I would say that the Dells and the MSI are the best. Acers are ok, but I consider them only slightly better quality than a Lenovo. At this point it mostly comes down to which brand you would want and which laptop looks the nicest to you. Personally I don't like the "gamer" look that the Acers have (and most laptops with a discrete GPU in them), so I would lean towards one of the Dells because they look the least "gamer" to me.
I think a laptop with a gtx 960m will be out performed by a desktop with a gtx 760 slightly...If I were you , I would definitely go for a laptop with gtx 970 which would be fantastic. This ASUS ROG G751JT-WH71(WX) would be a great selection.. It has a nice i7 quad core processor, 16 GB RAM, a 1 TB HDD in addition to a fast 128 GB SSD , and of course a GTX 970M 3GB dedicated graphics card with G-Sync technology ... This laptop also has a nice cooling system, solid keyboard and excellent display quality..
Yeah I was considering a Mac book pro if I got a Mac.... but I’ve got a few gaming laptops in mind, but can’t decide.

How does this look https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01BMERZJ6/ref=s9_acsd_hps_bw_c_x_4, for the price seems like a good deal. The cheapest comparable lenovo (display ssd etc) costs 980 with a 3 cell battery. The cheapest dell xps is 900 with half of the ssd size. Its really up to you, but to me that seems like the best deal for a portable machine atm. Also good luck in school!
The disk that came with the SSD is probably a data migration tool to help you make the process easy by directly transferring the files to the SSD from the HDD. In this case, you do need a SATA to USB connector (https://www.amazon.com/StarTech-SATA-Drive-Adapter-Cable/dp/B00HJZJI84/ref=sr_1_3?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1486406967&sr=1-3&keywords=sata%2Bto%2Busb&th=1) in order to transfer the files (Windows OS will be included so you don't have to have a separate install). The following video is great in telling you how to go through the process of using the Samsung Data Migration tool (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M_Mu5TuXgXo) (plug in the SATA adapter to the SSD and computer, then use the software, then remove the old HDD after you turned off the computer, then put in the new SSD in and you should be good to go [remember to read through the description box for the YouTube videos I link because there is IMPORTANT information there, especially the video on using the Samsung Data Migration tool]). Good luck!
I’ve extensively researched the Razer Blade (was originally planning to purchase until I found Dell XPS 15), but never actually bought it.
~~If you don’t mind gaming at slightly lower settings, there’s many options already or about to be released, manufacturers are increasingly producing more “portable gaming” laptops, such as this Asus ZenBook
The GPU is MX150 (Mobile GT 1030), however it does surprisingly well in AAA games at reduced settings. Unless your studies demand a faster computer (computer science, etc) this should be good for a few years to come. ~~
Edit: Sorry, didn’t realise you wanted to play VR as well. However I would suggest a desktop PC for VR, as better laptop hardware can be a lot more expensive.
i saw your prev post: link
it's gonna be quite hard to find a laptop at that price that can play overwatch, league should be no problem tho. sorry i can't find a specific laptop, but here are some tips:
for storage, try to get an SSD instead of HDD, it makes a world of diff in terms of speed (think car vs bike).
try to get a screen with Full HD resolution (1920x1080), and IPS instead of TN technology, viewing angles and color accuracy is better
for gaming, get a discrete graphics card (unless you just wanna play league). i don't think your current laptop even has one! for overwatch, get at least a mx150/gtx1050 (latest generation gpu) or gtx960m (last gen gpu)
of course, make sure to check the weight and battery life of the laptop too for school purposes, you don't wanna be breaking your back lugging that thing around...even worse if you need your charger too...
for more info on how to pick laptops, see the wiki here
this laptop: link from the wiki looks pretty good! check out this youtube review here
personally i really like this laptop: link. the specs are good and it's still portable. more pricey tho. and no numpad
If you want a gaming laptop, I wouldnt buy from Lenovo. The AMD cards in them are generally less powerful then the NVIDIA Counterparts. I would go for something like this
Lenovo is a perfectly trusted brand to buy from. Many people don't really understand what the Superfish issue was and was overly blown up by the media. Lenovo is a very good manufactuer to buy from, however for gaming laptops other vendors deliver better performance for the money
Dell XPS 13 is a great choice, as others have noted. If you want to keep budget lower, you might also look at the Asus Zenbooks, namely the following models:
UX305UA - Core i5-6200U, no touchscreen though. Should handle Overwatch on low settings OK. On Amazon right now for $750 if you like the color (I can't find the other colors anywhere).
https://www.amazon.com/Asus-UX305UA-AS51-13-3-Inch-Generation-Titanium/dp/B01BMERZJ6
UX305CA - Core m3 6Y30 processor. QHD model has touchscreen. Core m processor allows it to be fanless. Should be great for school and work purposes. By accounts I have read, it will play Overwatch on low settings, but with poor framerates (mid-teens) when screen gets very busy. Arguably playable. Would handle older titles like Starcraft 2, LoL on low settings. QHD/touch model on Amazon right now for $700.
https://www.amazon.com/UX305-13-Inch-Laptop-PREVIOUS-MODEL/dp/B014VHWFKA
UX360CA - Also Core m3 6Y30 processor like the model above, with touchscreen, FHD, and flip hinges. This is a new model that was just released. 512 GB SSD model on Amazon right now for $799. Microsoft Store has 256 GB model for $749.
https://www.amazon.com/ZenBook-UX360CA-13-3-inch-Touchscreen-Windows/dp/B01GHQOD8U/ref=sr_1_1?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1468029537&sr=1-1&keywords=ux360ca
https://www.microsoftstore.com/store/msusa/en_US/pdp/ASUS-ZenBook-Flip-UX360CA-UBM1T-Signature-Edition-2-in-1-PC/productID.3389258300
Main caveat is that none of these have backlit keyboards, and are slightly larger than Dell XPS 13. They are much better-priced though, IMO.
Good luck!
On the lower end, a dell Inspiron would probably be fine. It has everything an average gamer / college student would need in it. It has an SSD which is faster than an HDD but less storage space at 256GB for this model. 256GB is probably fine for an average gamer / student though, and you probably will still never max it out unless you need to download 50+ games.
Another good option if you want something on the cheaper end is Acer Aspire V15 Nitro if you want 1TB HDD.
If you would like to pay an extra $100 for a bit higher quality, and an Asus 501 would be good, with a large SSD at 512GB as well.
And if you want to pay even more at $1000 for extremely high quality, get an Asus ROG G501. They are known for being tanks and their quality.
Portability + power is a bit of an issue. That said, here are some sub-$1500 suggestions from Amazon:
As an IT engineering student and a regular gamer, I am looking for the same laptop type as you since one month. I think the better at the moment is this one : https://www.amazon.com/K501UW-AB78-15-6-inch-Full-HD-Gaming-Glacier/dp/B01DT49XN8
However, after one week of intensive search, it only seems to be available in the US (I live in France :-( )
By the way, if someone found it in Europe, tell me !
One other alternative would be this one, but it is a little more heavy and more gaming oriented (not more powerfull but less designed for all-round uses). It is still an excellent choice : https://www.amazon.com/Dell-15-6-Inch-Quad-Core-i5-6300HQ-Processor/dp/B015PYYDMQ?ie=UTF8&linkCode=sl1&linkId=21baca150a9fae94f07ebffe370662eb&redirect=true&ref_=as_li_ss_tl&tag=pcve-20
There are good reviews of them and others here, if you want : http://pcverge.com/category/gaminglaptops/
I hope I have helped !
you can play fallout 4 and skyrim above low settings on something like a 940m for only like $500
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834315302&cm_re=acer_940m-_-34-315-302-_-Product
or get something like this with a 960m which will play fallout 4 on high and skyrim maxed probably for only $840
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834152951&cm_sp=Homepage_FDD-_-P1_34-152-951-_-05212016
for $1500 u could get a 970m and still have $300 to spare tho if you get something like this and maybe add an ssd for like $100 or less
http://www.amazon.com/G751JT-WH71-WX-17-Inch-GeForce-Version/dp/B015QZVAF2/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1463869741&sr=8-4&keywords=970m+laptop
That is an ok price for that laptop, but its definitely not worth 900 anymore. If you want something more gaming centric, this Refurbished Acer has a more powerful CPU and gtx 1050 GPU but a smaller SSD. It is also available new for $700 in an even more powerful 1050 ti configuration.
I would usually got for some with a gtx 1050 or 1050ti. If you're into having a cheaper laptop, a mx150 would do you justice. Here are some links:
https://www.amazon.com/Acer-Aspire-i5-8250U-GeForce-E5-576G-5762/dp/B075FLBJV7/ref=sr_1_7?keywords=gtx+1050+laptop&qid=1556887479&s=gateway&sr=8-7
https://www.amazon.com/ASUS-Vivobook-GeForce-Fingerprint-Backlit/dp/B07MKLLVFZ/ref=sr_1_7?keywords=gtx+1050+laptop&qid=1556887705&s=gateway&sr=8-7
For right now, if you're willing to wait a little bit you could get some great deals on 1050 laptops for 500ish. At the moment there doesn't seem to be any shocking deals. In regards to the two laptops you have there, I would say you can't go wrong with them actually. I would go with the acer laptop I linked because an mx150 is much much stronger. Also, mx150 is slowing being replaced by mx250, maybe something good will pop up as well.
We're currently in the same dilemma. I'm assuming you have the same budget as me ($1000-1200)? First off, I'd remove the HP Omen and the MSI GL63 from your list immediately simply because they are not 144hz. It's such a waste since all the laptops you listed are priced the same but those two don't have the vastly superior 144hz screens. Once you go 144hz, you will never go back to 60hz. Also, there is a better Y7000 being sold right now by B&H compared to the one you listed. It's better because it has a 144hz screen for exactly the same price.
Lastly, you can add the Acer Predator Helios 300 to your considerations. It's the same price as the OP 17 and the Y7000 and it has the same specs. Currently, I'm deciding between these last 3 laptops.
Here is the Y7000:
https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1432666-REG/lenovo_81lf0004us_core_i7_8750h_16gb.html
Here is the Helios 300:
https://www.amazon.com/Acer-Predator-Overclockable-Aeroblade-PH315-51-78NP/dp/B07CTHLX8C/ref=sr_1_3?keywords=acer+predator+helios+300&qid=1549878155&s=electronics&sr=1-3
I was going to show you this: https://www.amazon.com/Acer-Aspire-Gaming-GeForce-VN7-593G-73KV/dp/B01N35Z1DA Since I own it and absolutely love it, but it's a tad bit too heavy at 2.4KG. Other than that, it hits everything else: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 with 6 GB of dedicated GDDR5 VRAM, Intel Core i7-7700H, 256GB SSD (You can upgrade this with the money you had left), Thunderbolt port ( 4 lanes, eGPU possible ), 88% RGB, 15.6 display, and 16GB ram that's upgradable (but 16 is good as it is). Plus, at the price of 1,200 with free shipping is hard to beat. But, that's if you're willing to ignore the bit of extra weight.
Thanks for the info. So do you think it would be worth it to buy a used one from Amazon for ~$80 cheaper? The description says there is a little bit of cosmetic damage ("less than 5%") on the top but that's all. Does Amazon usually have a good reputation for used items like this being just as reliable as a new one?
EDIT: Note the price is up to $700 now on Amazon. Still a good price but there are other competitive models like this from Lenovo. I still prefer the Inspiron at $700.
I spent about a month searching/waiting for a better deal and nothing came up. I would note that it is 5 or 6 lbs so not ideal for carrying around campus. Looking for something slimmer/lighter with these specs will drive the price way up. There's also a model here for $750 with touchscreen and a faster processor, but SSHD instead of SSD.
There is Acer Swift 3 and a Asus Zenbook with similar specs but its price is like $999 plus the Acer Swift just looks and feels more premium and she can get an external HDD or even SSD for photo and video editing plus the MX 150 gpu can handle almost every games at medium with good frames.
You might want to bump up to 14". Laptops that size are a bit cheaper and more common, while still being almost half the weight of a 15.6". I'd highly recommend getting something with a ryzen mobile or 8th gen i5/i7 since this latest gen of mobile processors is pretty much exclusively quad core instead of dual like the past decade or so.
EDIT: If you can raise the budget some, then this asus looks ok.
If I'm correctly look at the laptop that you have (i7 4700 hq and gtx 765m) I am confident to say that both the processor difference and gpu difference it quite substantial looking at modern laptops. From doing some research, the 765m performance an peform as well or worse than an mx150 gpu that is found in laptops at like 600 dollar. I couldnt exactly find a laptop for 1600 but Ill refer to one for 1200 on amazon. https://www.amazon.com/Acer-Predator-i7-8750H-Overclockable-PH315-51-78NP/dp/B07CTHLX8C/ref=lp_565108_1_8?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1538671430&sr=1-8
This laptop has a way better gpu, cpu and a 144hz display while costing less than previously. Basically my point is laptops have gotten a lot better while becoming cheaper also.
How about this? Would easily allow you to get into some gaming as well :)
This really depends on how much you are planning to spend. But for gaming laptops mostly, you can find the best bang for the buck when you start spending $800+. If let's say the gaming session is limited at home and not on the go, it's better to build a desktop. Regardless, here are some notable laptops with best bang for the buck:
Thanks but one person has messaged me and recommend I spend a bit more and get this https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B01DT49XN8#Ask I could probably pay less for more but I really like the look of this computer.
Second attempt for suggestion! Now won't move from 600-850$.
First: Acer Swift 3. I think that model is great.
Second: Asus ZenBook UX330UA-AH55
Third (yours): Dell Inspiron 13 7000
Take in mind something, Dell Inspiron 13 7000 is touch display. That, by itself, is great. But it consumes more battery, so maybe it worries you. Any question, just DO IT!
This is stupid. Any half respected engineering program will have school computer lab facilities to use and remote into when in person access isn't possible. This is speaking from experience. Ask about that before you buy a machine.
Being said, I have no idea why they suggested the recommendations they did - they're pretty standard specs for laptops now, but you they look stupid af considering they aren't tailored to running simulations or CAD programs well. Anything else, like writing lab reports or papers can be done on something weak af, like a tablet.
Definitely contact the people at your school. If they're set on a laptop that meets requirements, consider an ultrabook like the Asus Zenbook UX305UA, or something like the Dell Inspiron i7559, which packs a punch for a fairly low price point.
For usual college stuff, this is good, and even plenty. If you're doing engineering, this will be quite suitable for doing CAD drawings too, just not to the level of an assembly that has tons of parts, as well as connections.
As for typing and browsing, this should do pretty well, and it should have a long battery life.
For gaming, I can't say much about the GPU. It's not a gaming GPU. It's gonna run CS:GO and most MOBAs fluently. Most games from 2012 and below should run smoothly at higher details as well. As for more current games, you can run them quite well at 720p and medium-low details.
As /u/juken7 said, you really need at least 960M if you want to game well.
This one should be more suited for gaming, but I won't bet much on it as it has a dual core CPU still. But, it strikes a decent balance between being frugal for daily use (That dual core is really good for daily typing tasks out of the mains), and having enough power for gaming (960M is quite decently fast)
Yeah you'd have to spend around $1500 to get everything listed I think. A few years ago at the local Microcenter I was able to get a good deal on a gaming laptop with a GTX 1070. The screen is only 75Hz but it over clocks to 100Hz without issues. The CPU is a i7 6700HQ though but still solid.
I was just looking at the Acer you listed and it linked a newer model. It has 2 out of 3 requirements for $1200! Go with this one! The laptop I bought that I mentioned is also an Acer. I was impressed with the build quality. It actually fell off of my desk with the screen open and it survived too. It was a glass desk that just shattered on it's own from wear and tear. My laptop was the victim.
https://www.amazon.com/Acer-Predator-Overclockable-Aeroblade-PH315-51-78NP/dp/B07CTHLX8C/ref=dp_ob_title_ce
The 17 inch model can had for $100 more at Microcenter.
https://www.microcenter.com/product/507931/predator-helios-300-ph317-52-74kr-173-gaming-laptop-computer---black
I guess you could say I'm partial to Acer Predator laptops.
Found this on Amazon as the above link doesn't ship globally: https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B01N35Z1DA/ref=mp_s_a_1_8?ie=UTF8&qid=1503078296&sr=8-8&refinements=p_n_shipping_option-bin%3A3242350011&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_FMwebp_QL65&keywords=Gtx+1060+laptop&dpPl=1&dpID=51jejzOZYQL&ref=plSrch
It seems to be similar but once again alot of the reviews state they had to return their models and some had issues of thermals, others battery life and fan noise. Since I'm going to ship this abroad, I don't think I'll be able to return it if any issue arises. Is the risk worth it or should I go for another safer option? The legion I can get in my home country but the gigabyte or acer or any other laptop I'll have to ship.
You could get the Acer swift (longer battery&better build)
https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B0746NQYFF/ref=psdcmw_13896615011_t1_B0746P25QX?th=1&psc=1
Or
The nitro 5 for full performance
https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B074Q54GSR/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1509997922&sr=8-3&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_QL65&keywords=acer+nitro+5&dpPl=1&dpID=51jn9S7pQOL&ref=plSrch
Both should play overwatch though the nitro will get better frames
Obviously you want something with an i7 and a dGPU. I would say something that has the MX150 or GTX1050 to stay within the price limit and depending on how big the laptop should be, I can recommend these:
Of course, these are just the links to the general systems. Make sure you get the right configuration with either a 512GB SSD or a 256GB SSD and a 1TB HDD so you can store all your files on the system. The first Asus and the HP are both gaming laptops so they're slightly bigger and the battery lasts less long. The ones with the MX150 are generally smaller and should last longer.
It's not that out of the ordinary. It's competing with laptops like the Dell Inspiron 7567 and the Acer Aspire VX 15.
That being said:
The ASUS Zenbook UX305UA is better as it has a 50% more powerful processor.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B07B7VFTN9/ref=psdcmw_13896615011_t1_B0795W86N3
How would this laptop perform if I add an additional 8 gb of ram? Thanks for your help.
You're paying a premium for the 2-in-1 form factor and touchscreen, and it lacks dedicated graphics(though they've gotten good enough you don't need them if you're not intending to play games with the laptop).
Assuming you don't need the touchscreen and form factor, this laptop goes for $680, has a quad-core processor (U-series processors are dual-core ones) and a 950M GPU.
this one is significantly cheaper by using a 7200U while retaining the 950M and SSD(but still ditching the form factor/touchscreen).
Definitely give ASUS's Vivobook and Zenbook series a look. The only thing Mac related that you can get under $1000 that isn't stupidly over priced is the Macbook Air. Here's a couple links:

I would say it's not the most bang for the buck you can get. Now there's something to be said about aesthetics so maybe that'll sway you one way or another, but you can get the same specs for $999

or, in my opinion, better specs (6 gb gtx 1060) for $1199

avoid getting a gaming laptop if you'll be using it for school. you'll make sacrifices on portability and battery life. for games like csgo and rocket league an mx150 is sufficient, and there are plenty of ultrabooks that have one.

here's a thin/light 14" laptop that looks pretty good: https://www.amazon.com/VivoBook-i7-8550U-GeForce-NanoEdge-Display/dp/B07B7VFTN9

not sure if you can open it with one hand, but according comments you should be able to add more storage: https://i.imgur.com/iFIWnGh.png

If Mac is necessary, and the computer is in good condition (make sure to run stress tests), then yes. But if that is not the case, you can get decent Windows ultraportables at this price like this.
Acer Aspire V 15 Nitro Black Edition
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01N35Z1DA/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_5eDezb3DGYB6X
This is what I have, ive been using it for about a month now and it's amazing. it's one of the cheaper laptops compared to those with the same specs if you're looking to save money. It runs a little hot out the box when playing heavy games but after undervolting my CPU it doesn't get hotter than 80°.
Acer Predator Helios 300 Gaming Laptop PC, 15.6" FHD IPS w/ 144Hz Refresh, Intel i7-8750H, GTX 1060 6GB, 16GB DDR4, 256GB NVMe SSD, Aeroblade Metal Fans PH315-51-78NP https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07CTHLX8C/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_.FyRCb01DN1S0
On sale for $1000 right now. It comes with a full GTX 1060. So you're not going to be able to run all games at ultra with 60fps but it will do decently and fits your price budget. You'll need to spend the money saved from the sale for an extra 2.5 inch SSD though.
After going over everything you brought up I poked around to see what the... drop off is for laptops and it seems there are some pretty significant differences between 500-600.
With that in mind going a bit higher (gdamn slippery slope I started off about to buy a $300 laptop from best buy lol) I found...

I mean opening up another price bracket may add a lot of options but I just saw that in that range dedicated vid cards started poping up more often. I assume in this one in particular the Ryzen 5 processor is the weak point.
Or I would recommend the acer e 15, or inspiron 15 5000 5577
Link to all 3 on amazon:
Acer inspiron 15
Acer Aspire E 15
Acer Aspire 5
With this budget, you have to understand that you will have to make sacrifices to get an all round good laptop with decent battery life and weight since you are going to be video editing you will need an i7 and a dedicated gpu
Acer vx 15 i7-7700HQ/GTX 1050ti/16GB RAM/256GB SSD and you can contact Acer and they will send the HDD bracket so you can add your own
Dell Inspiron 7567 i7-7700HQ/GTX 1050ti/16GB RAM/128GB SSD/1TB HDD
Lenovo Y520 i7-7700HQ/GTX 1050ti/16GB RAM/128GB SSD/1TB HDD
The Dell has the best battery but its the most expensive in these 3, the screens aren't the best on the market as they are around the $1000 price range.

This acer laptop looks like an absolute steal at less than 1k, great processor, GTX 1060. Battery life is advertised at 7 hours and while it’s not exactly light, it’s not really super heavy either at 5.51 pounds. 144hz refresh rate too. Just looking at the specs, this definitely looks like a better deal, but in terms of build quality and durability I’m not so sure.
Right now, this Asus Zenbook costs 750 USD compared to the 800 USD one with the same specs.
Is the 750 USD one a better deal? Only difference I can find is the body is different.
Thanks. I am not too concerned about the weight. before Eluktronics, I also was looking at the Lenovo Y700 (https://www.amazon.com/Lenovo-i7-6700HQ-GeForce-Windows-80NV00W4US/dp/B01LNOECNW/ref=pd_ybh_a_38?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=XBSXCZFYFRJM3EX3GSSQ)

with that price getting a gtx 1060 is easy so get this-
Acer Predator Helios 300 Gaming Laptop, 15.6" Full HD IPS Display w/ 144Hz Refresh Rate, Intel 6-Core i7-8750H, GeForce GTX 1060 6GB Overclockable Graphics, 16GB DDR4, 256GB NVMe SSD, PH315-51-78NP https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07CTHLX8C/ref=cm_sw_r_other_apa_2cKDBb0CZ312G
TL;DR: the most straightforward way to swap a drive is the external USB disk method I described before. But if you want to get fancy, read below.
(apologies if this is information overload and just confusing you more. Then just ignore this post)
It's possible to clone your internal SSD directly to the new SSD without two slots, depending on the SSD you are using.
If it's a standard 2.5in SATA drive (something like this) then you can attach the new drive to your laptop over USB with a cable like this one). This will be faster, easier and cheaper than using the external drive method I mentioned earlier.
If it's an m.2 SATA SSD (like this one) you can also attach it via USB with an adaptor (like this one)
If it's an m.2 NVMe drive and you only have one slot... then you need to do the external USB disk method I mentioned before.

depends on the games. you probably wont be able to run witcher 3 on max settings but options like this v15 which is plenty for fast gaming, but this asus buisness hurts your back a LOT less and wont give you the notorious 2 hour battery life of gaming laptops and can run esport games like overwatch decently and will feel a lot nicer doing it.
Yes, just bought one that's close to that with minimal upgrades. You can get one used for less, and upgrade the RAM and add a drive. But there are some similar models around that price.

WEll Guys I went with this, https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B074Q54GSR/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1, what do you think?
Look at the Acer Aspire E15, Acer Nitro 5, and Dell Latitude 5577.
These laptops all have 15" screens and HDMI.
The GTX 1050 is a stronger GPU than the MX150, although the 1050 takes more power.
Your laptop has two slots open. One M.2 slot and one 2.5" drive bay. You can get an NVMe SSD and it will work on the M.2 port. You can also get any 2.5" SSD and it will work on the 2.5 drive bay. Any SSD you buy would be a good suit for the laptop. Just make sure you don't cheap out and buy the cheapest off-brand SSDs in the market as they might not have the best reliability and you might lose your data if they break.
Some recommendations I would make -

Looks like normal 2.5" SATA connectors to me. You might also need this cable to transfer your old files from the HDD to the SSD.
The Acer Swift 3 with an i5-8250U and MX150 has popped up on Amazon, purportedly shipping in 1-2 months, so I'd guess during the month of September we'll be seeing more laptops available.
Would you recommend this one?
https://www.amazon.com/Acer-i5-8250U-NVIDIA-GeForce-SF314-52G-55WQ/dp/B0746P25QX
If you don't mind poor battery life than a laptop with an i5, 8GB RAM and maybe a GTX 950M or RX 560. On Amazon there is the Lenovo IdeaPad 700 for US $700
How does the 7th gen i7 compare to 8th gen i5?
I just bought the Asus Zenbook UX330UA over the Asus Zenbook UX430DB71BL. My main concern was battery usage-seems like they had comparable performance but the i7 would drain the battery. Also, my computing demands are minimal (web, word,etc.).
Here are the two I was considering:
https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1348416-REG/asus_ux430ua_db71_bl_i7_7500u_2_7_8gb.html?ap=y&c3api=1876%2C116777138042%2C%2C&gclid=Cj0KCQjw_ZrXBRDXARIsAA8KauTYHVA1z0V_BG1MczOg9rGR8fTk7Uo09pcMK9L01vllKeOgN8XvCNYaAtsaEALw_wcB
And
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B075N1YHVK/ref=twister_B06Y11R2WR?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
The latter of the two is arriving today.

Where do you live? All these computers wont game for shit. Get a Dell G3 or AcerHelios 300.
Then I guess you can try a laptop which has similar specs to mine ;) Check out the Dream Machines Range, and if you are unsatisfied with the screen you can also opt for this acer https://www.amazon.com/Acer-Predator-Overclockable-Aeroblade-PH315-51-78NP/dp/B07CTHLX8C/ref=sr_1_7?keywords=Lenovo+Legion+Y530&qid=1570431938&sr=8-7, quite fairly priced in my opinion.
ASUS
OR
MSI
Ideapad with FHD IPS panel, 256GB ssd, 4 core cpu and gtx950
or cheaper version, with 1TB hdd, and you get to buy SSD for the price difference, and keep the HDD
