I really like the books by Jenneke Oosterhoff such as Basic Dutch: A Grammar and Workbook. She also has an intermediate book and grammar book. I also would highly recommend the book 201 Dutch Verbs: Fully Conjugated which is by a different author but a great reference book!
In terms of programs, I really like the options on the NT2 website, such as the Delftse Methode It gets you using everyday phrases and idioms as Dutch people would use and pronounce them.
Personally, I’m not a big fan of Duolingo as I don’t find the exercises / phrases applicable to everyday speech. Rosetta Stone Totale (online version) is actually great in learning more relevant and everyday vocabulary and phrases. For example: Giving directions, ordering food, describing your schedule, etc)
Hope this helps!
Hey there,
To quickly gain conversational fluency, I recommend investing in:
In my opinion, an audio couse and a frequency dictionary are the essential two tools to rapidly gain a base in any language. You won't be able to write an official letter, or speak 100% without error.. but if your goal is fluency for day-to-day activities you're golden.
Hope this helps!
Have you considered any from the list in the OP?
For starters, everybody here seems to go for Essential Dutch Grammar.
Some of the other books:
201 Dutch Verbs: Fully Conjugated in All the Tenses
Lonely Planet Dutch Phrasebook & Dictionary
Basic Dutch: A Grammar and Workbook
Modern Dutch Grammar: A Practical Guide
The list also suggests Routledge Intensive Dutch Course but to be honest, it's a rather heavygoing book so I would only buy it if you want something... intensive. :)
hi,
I'm a huge fan of Michel Thomas paired with the Assimil with ease audio + book.
Michel Thomas Dutch
Assimil Dutch with Ease
I just came across Meer is altijd beter: A comedy for students of Dutch. It uses the most common words in Dutch, akin to Le Petit Prince. I'm looking forward to reading it.
Seems like a solid list! Someone posted this list of books a few days ago, I think they're all solid suggestions.
Stern's Essential Dutch Grammar is a must-have. If they're after a workbook to go through, Basic Dutch: A Workbook is another favourite of mine
> tapijtreiniger
After spending some time looking, I'm concerned I can only find full size carpet cleaners (tapijtreiniger). I'm looking for a small "spot" cleaner as I have a dog and children, but little carpet. I was thinking something small like a Rug Doctor or this. I would prefer to buy from a local Dutch store from a EU brand.
It's not quite about learning Dutch, but any ideas?
If you're after getting a few books, Essential Dutch Grammar and 201 Dutch Verbs: Fully Conjugated in All the Tenses are both really good, especially the former.
I'd also check out Duolingo and Memrise if you're after (free) online tools.
This dictionary is a good one. It includes pronunciation, too.
Avoid the smaller dictionaries that come as part of a basic course, or a travel companion, or phrase book - they're usually really short.
I have not begun to seriously study Dutch but I have gathered some learning materials.
