To Kill a Mockingbird. It has heavy themes, but if your daughter is a strong reader and mature, she will love it. Also, mystery novels are great for kids who have a been on liking law- no, lawyers don't solve mysteries but we do unravel problems and get to the bottom of issues a lot of the time. If she likes non-fiction, this book on Amazon looks popular:
https://www.amazon.com/Teens-Trial-Challenged-Law-Changed/dp/1575420813

Really, tell her if she wants to be a lawyer, she needs to read anything and everything she can, whether it is about law or not. As a lawyer I do a LOT of reading and the faster and more accurate you are in your reading and reading comprehension, the better. The only way to get better at reading is to read.

You're welcome :) Though the fact that two of them seem to live elsewhere doesn't necessarily mean that they don't have tenancy there, too. People can have multiple residences, even if they live at one more than the other (think people with vacation homes, for example, or apartments in two cities that they commute between). I'm not too sure how you can check whether they have tenancy there, but at this point it's probably best to assume they do if their father isn't doing anything like kicking them out (which is a shame, but... yeah).

As for the food... hm. I don't think you can do much regarding freezer/fridge things, except hope they don't get stolen. :( With pantry things, I'd suggest getting airtight containers - not the normal tupperware-like ones, but ones with rubber seals along the ridge of the lid, like this. As long as you make sure your apartment is clean (even to the point of vacuuming every time you eat there), or bring the things to and from between your room and the kitchen when you're prepping/cooking/eating, bugs shouldn't be able to sense the food inside or get into it; if they can't sense it, they'll stay away from wherever you keep it. (Plus there's the bonus that the food will last longer, yay? Hah)

Bought a tea infuser on amazon, instead of returning it trying to sell it, got a cease and desist letter from amazon/developers
>I can't believe such nonsense is taking place, but here we go.
>
> Bought this tea tumbler 2 weeks ago, and immediately upon first use I've noticed some issues with it, which I mentioned in my review. Now I tried to be lax on the developers and cut them slack, so I just took away 1 star from perfect score. And even though I had the opportunity to just return it and get a full refund, I decided it'd be more fair of me to try to sell it since the main issue I had with this tea tumbler wasn't stated not to persist by the developer, of course one could assume there wouldn't be such an issue, but since developer didn't boast as a boon that this tea tumbler doesn't specifically have such an issue, can't really hold them accountable for having such an issue with their product.
>
> Anyhow, I'm able to sell other stuff an amazon, yet why am I not allowed to sell this one?
>
> Would the developers rather have me ask for a refund? This doesn't make any sense. The cease and desist pdf that was attached to an e-mail I received from amazon.
>
> I already talked to amazon chat, send them a letter, but it's too low on the chain for them to do anything about it. I wish there was like a community support forum or something on amazon.

Regarding personal security, window locks are all and good, but be sure to get security film as well. It's surprisingly cheap (dunno how good this brand is, but 30 inches by 6.5 feet for $40)

A good security film goes on clear, or close enough and makes it dramatically more difficult to break the glass. It's not the end-all be-all, of course, but it should buy you more time if he goes full psycho and tries to break in.

And if there's any chance at all that he has a key to your place, rekey. Replacing locks is easy and relatively inexpensive.

> If someone could build a prototype, find investors, and bring it to market then I'd be thrilled with 5%.

Well, that's actually within the range that people get paid for licensing their ideas to companies. They do all the work and take all the risk, and you receive a royalty. If you're interested in this, you should read One Simple Idea by Stephen Key. It's a great book that explains everything about the licensing process. I've met the author in person, and he's a fantastic guy. Very generous and truly loves helping people.

It's been almost ten years since I bought mine, but this one is pretty similar. I had it taped to the peephole, and connected to a 35 foot RCA extension cable running to my TV on the other side of my dorm. I found the microphone to be pretty useless for this purpose, but it's there if you want to give it a try. The red connector is for power, which you can also get for fairly cheap.

There are other options, like this wireless camera, which can be run from an AC adapter or a 9v battery (for a short period of time).

Most of them use RCA adapters which, admittedly, are a bit dated. I ran mine through a VCR, but most not-so-new DVD players will work too if your TV doesn't have RCA inputs. You may be able to find one with coax or HDMI if you shop around, but the cheapest ones are pretty much all RCA. If you want to get really fancy, just run it to a computer with a cheap TV tuner card that supports those inputs - then you can broadcast it anywhere.

If you own instead of rent (or can get permission to drill a few small holes), there's a lot better options from other cameras in the sub-$100 range to mount just outside the door and running through the wall. But if you can't make any modifications, the pinhole camera in the peephole works passably well.

Friend, I don't normally recommend books to posters, but I'll make an exception here.

I read this book a few years ago and found it useful throughout my career. It's called "Influence" and it focuses on how to be persuasive. It may save you a lot of headaches in the future if you can learn today how to be influential tomorrow. Telling people to do something and using "because the CEO said to do it" is rarely going to make a positive impact.

Heh, sorry. You need to connect the red wire to a 12volt DC power source (more on that in a minute) and the black to "ground" (any metal part of the car. Usually a screw on the body somewhere).

The power is normally supplied by the lighter adapter, but as you can imagine, there is a lot of electricity flowing around your car. The simplest solution is to get a properly sized fuse tap (there are 2-3 different sizes of fuses commonly used so you have to make sure you get the right one for your car). You remove a fuse (for something that gets power only when the car is on, like the radio) from the fuse box under the steering wheel, plug in the tap and add the fuse back in on top.

You can then crimp the red wire of the direct connect into the fuse tap and you have power. Find something metal to screw the black wire to, and that recreates what the lighter plug does without taking up the space in the lighter.

As far as how to do it in the back of a car, you will have to pull some interior body panels off to get access, but stuff like license plate lights are usually a great place to get a switched source of power.

To get power from a wire that's already in place, you just need one (not the 100 in the link) of these instead of a fuse tap. You slide one end over the existing wire, plug the new wire you want spliced into the other end, then use pliers and snap the cover down, which automatically splices the wire for you.

Hope that's clearer.

Hello,

Congrats on your BTC find! The internet is a dangerous place, and you're talking some Buku money here. I have some suggestions for you for the moment, and I'm going to break it down a little assuming you are new to Cryptocurrency:

  1. For right now, "You don't have Bitcoin". Don't tell anyone for any reason, no friends, no acquaintances, no internet, no Reddit. This amount of money turns people very dark very fast and you don't want to deal with the headache. Find yourself an Attorney that specializes in financials that you trust. You only need to worry about taxes if you cash out for USD, of which don't do that yet, holding it will be the best practice as BTC is still growing.

  2. Absolutely move this money to a safe, yet accessible hardware wallet. I recommend purchasing a Ledger Nano S, like.. right now, immediately: https://www.amazon.com/Ledger-Nano-Cryptocurrency-Hardware-Wallet/dp/B01J66NF46/

  3. BTC Split recently and there is an equal amount of BCH attached to that wallet you found. The BCH needs to be separated from the BTC to ensure that you can own both of them safely. The Ledger Nano S will allow you to hold both currencies in the same device. This step can be tricky, as you'll need to make a new Bitcoin (BTC) wallet, and a new Bitcoin Cash (BCH) wallet. You'll need to run a Bitcoin client on your computer in order to use your current public and private keys to send that Bitcoin to your new wallet on the Ledger safely. You'll then do the same thing with a Bitcoin Cash Client. The reason you have to do both is because when you reveal your private key in order to move the BCH, it wouldn't be wise to leave your BTC in that wallet since the private key has been exposed and someone could steal it.

Please take the steps to secure those funds safely. Never give ANYONE any passwords, keys, or any other information about your Bitcoin. Once the money is transferred or lost you can't get it back. Try to keep this investment on the DL as much as you can because I'm serious, you'll have all these people coming out of the wood work trying to hit you up for money including your own family. Greed is a powerful thing.

If you have any additional questions on the Ledger process or the splitting process with the Bitcoin Cash (BCH) just fire away, I literally just did this last week for the umpteenth time and would be happy to send you a writeup on how to do it all. I previously was using paper wallets stored in a vault but the Ledger is so much better and safer.

Also, you're gonna get a lot of "experts" telling you what to reinvest this into. If you don't want to kick yourself later: Do not sell your BTC, do not reinvest your BTC into any other cryptocurrency. No Litecoin, no Ether, no Dash, Monero, Steem, Stratis, no ICOs (all ICOS are scams), nothing. A lot of people will also try to sway you off the Bitcoin "Bullet Train" and onto their slow fiat currency Donkey Express options like Mutual Funds and all that jazz "for safety". Hop on www.coinmarketcap.com and look at Bitcoin's chart but zoomed out to monthly and yearly. Keep an eye on those two charts only, smile at the haters, and send them on their way.

Take care and good luck! You have a bright future ahead of you.

> If you can afford a system that records 24/7 and either stores it on the cloud or on a local DVR, I'd recommend that for outdoor use.

I'd like to add, this can be pretty affordable if you take the time to do the research and build it up! Getting IP camera's and an NVR doesn't have to cost an arm and a leg. Build your requirements, and find a camera that offers what you need. If you don't let scope creep happen, you'll find you're probably spending maybe $40-$50/camera (example). Then it's all about building up the NVR. A decent used server (like the R710) can be found on eBay for only a couple hundred bucks, and iSpy is free. So really, all in all, a complete home security setup can be had for less than $300 if you play your cards right with the benefit of it being completely modular, expandable, and you can control the data however you want (local backups, cloud backups, whatever) instead of being pigeon-holed in to a vendor's solution.

Put up security cameras, I got some of these they work great and the price is right. Once installed, play nice, and let your neighbour act like the asshole, once you gather enough evidence go to the cops. Hopefully you can get a restraining order. At this point if he brings up the knife incident it's your word against his, and his credibility with cops will be in the shitter once you show them video proof of his harassment. The most important thing is to PLAY NICE.

What your family member is looking at buying is a Baofeng UV-5R. It is actually not designed to be a scanner but is a ham radio that can transmit/receive public safety bands. It is perfectly legal to own these radios and they are extremely common. Unlike most other radios however, they will do nothing to prevent you from transmitting on bands that you're not allowed to transmit on. So while it would be perfectly fine for them to get that radio, they just have to be very careful not to hit the transmit button.

If they are dead set on purchasing one, I would encourage them to get their amateur radio license so they can learn how to properly operate their radio, learn all about the relevant laws, and communicate on the the amateur bands that the UV-5R can transceive on.

u/Myriamor · 1 pointr/legaladvice

Depending how large your property is, some of these may not be the cheapest, but I will suggest them anyway. I've gone with suggessting IP cameras because they are cost effective in comparison to film counterparts and are usually pretty easy to set up.

This first is a bit more expensive, and I imagine more so in Canada, but I've heard good things about it.

If you want to buy some decent and cheap ones to set up, Amazon had recently started recommending these .

As with all purchases, take your time, do your research and see what fits the needs of you and your family most.

Then maybe it would be best to try to obscure the window rather than the balcony. There are lots of ways to do that.

My wife and I had a similar problem; she hated being exposed but I didn't want to lose the natural light. What we found worked was to apply something like this to the glass:

https://www.amazon.com/RABBITGOO-Privacy-Frosted-Adhesive-Bathroom/dp/B01MTA00AX/ref=sr_1_2_sspa?ie=UTF8&qid=1524614568&sr=8-2-spons&keywords=window+frosting+film&psc=1

... which gave us privacy while preserving natural light. Because we wanted to have some ability to see out, we didn't cover the entire window with it, just the center portion. It makes a nice effect, and it's easy to see out but still nearly impossible to see anything inside.

u/castlite · 22 pointsr/legaladvice

OP, get a travel lock like this immediately. I have this and you just slide it into the door plate each time, fast & easy. Then call the police and see what they'd suggest, and whatever tenants association in in Quebec.

u/truenoise · 2 pointsr/legaladvice

You should encourage your mom and stepdad to also an Advanced Directive (sometimes known as a living will). This will let you, and a hospital know what to do if they get catastrophically ill. I recently bought this book which is a helpful guide to talking through some of the questions about where paperwork and account info is, what kind of service your parent wants, etc.

u/Dramatic_Explosion · 1 pointr/legaladvice

For anyone who feels unsafe in a place where someone else has a key, get one of these 1, 2, 3. They only work while you're already inside your room/home/apartment, but make it so no key or lockpick will let someone in. Peace of mind when you sleep.

Practice using it if you get one in case of a fire or other quick-exit need.

u/whootdat · 2 pointsr/legaladvice

If not, try this https://www.amazon.com/dp/B015121KH8/ (the only thing you need in an Amazon link is /dp/ and the string starting with B, the rest is link/referrer tracking)
