Lol wut, you can still buy the same quartz metronomes everyone's been buying for a million years for like, 20 bucks. And plenty of people do. For fuck's sake, you can still buy a damn wind-up mechanical pendulum metronome if that's what tickles your fancy. Matter of fact, there's a tiny wind-up metronome in the piano lesson room at the music store I teach at and I use it during lessons occasionally when I don't feel like getting out my phone.
but, smartphone metronome apps do exist for people who have a smartphone and would like to consolidate their shit. It serves the same purpose, what the fuck is so wrong with that? I use my metronome and chromatic tuner apps all the time and it hasn't made me a worse musician.

That is, generation 4 and 5 are only five years apart, but have marked generational differences because their cultural identities are bound with the media they consumed at formative ages.
