I was just checking into this subreddit to see if anything had ever been posted about whether folks here do IPDA/IPSC, and I find that something was just posted 18 hours ago. That's great, but I'm really puzzled why you posted two completely unrelated topics in the same post? And with a totally non-descriptive title?

I checked out my local IDPA meet's website and they basically said that before you compete you should (1) come and observe, and (2) have attended a training at something like Front Sight Academy.

A 2-day course at Front Sight is $1,000, so there is no way I am doing that, sorry. I'm sure the course is great, but there is nothing they can teach me that is worth $500/day. Anyone know some reputable yet cheaper alternatives?

I am currently waiting for this book to arrive in the mail. Several types of competition interest me in the long run...3-gun, IDPA/IPSC, bullseye, silhouette. Even some long-range rifle competitions (although I'm really a newbie to that type of shooting). But the first type of competition I'd like to get into, say in the next year or two, is definitely defensive pistol (IDPA/IPSC).

I've read a few marksmanship books, I feel that I am progressing to the point that in the near future I will have sufficient basic marksmanship skills to be ready to move from indoor pistol ranges, and shooting at non-moving paper targets from a non-moving position, to shooting at moving targets and/or shooting on the move. That said, I've only been shooting my own gun for a little over a year, so I'm pretty new to all of this. In his book The Perfect Pistol Shot , Albert H. League III states that the goal of a shooter who has the fundamentals of marksmanship down should be

  • Three shots in one ragged hole at 7 yards
  • Three shots within 4 inches at 25 yards
  • Consistent torso hits on a full-size silhouette at 100 yards

I do all my shooting within 20 yards...usually within 10. I can't say that I always get three shots in one ragged hole at 7 yards, but when I really focus, I can get pretty darn close to that. But that's with about 10 seconds between shots, so even if that accuracy were good enough for IPSC/IDPA (which it probably isn't...), the speed would have to improve by an unbelievable amount.

Would be interested to hear the feedback of anyone who has competed.

Praxis prepper is pretty level headed. Canadian prepper is okay, but pitches his products a bit much. Outside that you've got LDS prepper and viking preparedness, both of which are strong on the religious aspects. Prepping princess is a bit odd, but does target a lower income viewer.

You'll want to prepare for the events that are most likely to happen in your environment, and then just general social unrest second. Go watch "One year in hell" to get an idea of what a truly dire social unrest situation can be like.

Personally, I'd also suggest securing water, then food, then arms. I assume you've probably already got arms, so if something happened tomorrow, you could offer your services as a defense agent to someone that has the ability to take care of you and yours in return. I bought a 1000L IBC tote, commonly used in industries that are also re-purposed into aquaponic tanks a lot. I got it $40 used and another for free from work, you want one that's been used in something food grade safe, that you could store out of direct sunlight, and put in some sort of long term water storage chemicals, which is often just a very low dose of chlorine. I suggest keeping it out of the sun in order to avoid the clean water leeching the plastics in it. Another way to go for mobile situations, is smaller containers you can put in your car or some methods to purify the water that you do collect if your environment allows for such activities. You'll want about a gallon of water per person per day. That will actually seem like a whole lot if you ever have to use it, including showers and what not.

Amazon has a bucket of food from Augason farms, it isn't the only thing you'd want for 30 days but it would keep you alive. It's mostly the cheap carbs, rice, noodles, potatoes, etc, but you could add in anything you like. The spices are a bit off from good, but it's workable and "cheap." I bought one for each member of my family, threw them in a closet and hope they stay there for 18 more years. This is the one I bought. Really just aim for around 2,000 calories per day per adult, then add in your neighbor's pets as needed. This gives you a month to find a way to produce food or get the hell out of your location. I favor aquaponics and greenhouses for longer production methods if you're got the space, focused on things like wheat, potatoes, beets, but also I love perennials. Kiwi, black/rasp/etc berries, apples, walnuts (can also be tapped for a walnut syrup, like maples). Also consider anything that grows locally, it'll take less efforts to keep alive and can spread on its own. If you're moving, bugging out, focus on hunting and trapping animals less than plants as a food source. Unless you're familiar with the plants it's easy to kill yourself. I downloaded an app that can ID plants, but that'll only work when the system is up, and in which case I'd just buy apples.

You'll need a way to remove your waste, if you can safely process that into biomass for your garden, awesome. That's something that'll take some time to master, so I'd say don't read about it and try it just on some Tuesday night. Outside that, waste systems for a city will usually keep operating long after water systems fail.

Learn how to make something you can trade in an emergency that people will need and you'll need less abilities to do it all.

Like alcohol or fuels.

I determined a while back that either my basic morality must change (unlikely), or my political position must shift to agree with it. That's how I ended up voluntarist (anarchist) today. I stopped advocating for policies based on what I thought of them at first glance in a vacuum, and started seriously examining my own basic morality, and consequently whether any policies were in conflict with it. Only then did I move on to studies of economics, with which I've become fascinated. For a thorough, yet layman-accessible examination of ethical/moral principle and the legitimacy of the state, I highly recommend Prof. Michael Huemer's The Problem of Political Authority. It is very dispassionate like a good academic publication should be, but I still found it riveting.

So I don't advocate the Libertarian party either, though in my studies I see significant merit to the associated economic policies even aside from their moral benefits. I highly recommend Henry Hazlitt's Economics in One Lesson.

I am also against taking one's shirt off on stage during a political convention. However, I of course will not try to stop anyone from becoming as nude as they wish. ;)

Haha, alright, my pitch is over. :)

> But what else should I get her? Ammo, sure. How much ammo is enough to practice for a bit? I really have no idea.

For ammo you'll want two varieties: defensive ammo and training ammo. Quality defensive ammo usually comes in a 25-round box, priced around $15-$20. You'll probably want 2 boxes of this, one to practice with and another to keep loaded in the actual/ready magazine for defensive use. There's about a dozen excellent brands on the market, I like Critical Defense by Hornady, but all contemporary 9mm defensive ammo is pretty good.

For training ammo you can buy it online. Just look at gunbot.net and sort by price. There's 3 general types and they'll all work fine: steel case, reloaded/remanufactured, and bulk. You just gotta keep an eye out on the internet regularly and find whatever deal looks good - be aware of hidden fees in shipping rates. Generally ordering ammo online is cheaper than the store, but check with your local gun store as they might sell cheap stuff. There's some puritans out there who claim issues with different types of training ammo, especially steel case - this is because they're confused and think that modern steel case 9mm is corrosive like old WW2 bulk steel case ammo was corrosive. TulAmmo and BrownBear and Wolf should all run mostly fine in your wife's Glock.

Quantity is going to vary - but you certainly can't have too much. At least 200 rounds for the first outing is good. Have her start with the cheap ammo, then before the day is over switch to the defensive loads and fire a magazine or two - this is mostly to ensure if functions in her pistol, there's not a huge difference in how it handles.

If she goes to a class the instructor will recommend or sell the ammo.

> Does it require a case or anything? A cleaning kit?

Generally a "case" for a pistol is the holster. Your gun store will sell some cheap types of holsters, and just start her with a really cheap one. When she moves to concealed carry she'll probably upgrade to one that fits her preferences of how she wants to carry and where to carry.

For cleaning you'll just need a bore brush for cleaning the barrel and a general cleaner/lubricant. Your gun store will sell some, I'd recommend Break Free CLP; it's an all-in-one spray. You actually don't really need to clean Glocks until after ~500 rounds, that's when you'll have malfunctions due to a dirty gun.

> What else is absolutely essential to buy with this gun?

Hearing protection. These Howard Leight ear muffs are extremely popular - they'll work fine for training purposes - they also amplify quiet sounds, so if there is a thump in the night you can throw these on and hear someone breathing in the next room. I've never seen someone disappointed in these ear muffs. If she's spending a long day at the range she'll also want inner-ear plugs as well.

Looks good! Although with your shorter stature, you might benefit from an adjustable stock and a shorter barrel.

For affordable rear sights, I recommend a Magpul folding back up iron sight (MBUS) as it’s nice an compact until you need/want it:
https://www.amazon.com/Magpul-Flip-Up-Backup-Sights-Black/dp/B004RR0N8Q/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?keywords=magpul+mbus+rear+sight&qid=1562336332&s=gateway&sprefix=magpul+mbus&sr=8-3

And a primary red dot - I really like the Bushnell TRS-25 with a mid height riser. It’s a good compromise of decent quality and great affordability. Although if you can swing a trijicon red dot or EOTech holographic sight, all the better.

Before I moved out of NY the range I went to had this rule, for them it was just about maintaining good relations with their neighbors and not making waves. The fact is if the neighbors of an outdoor range get motivated to shut it down, they have a good chance of being successful, and it's going to be expensive even if you win. The range itself was outdoors and close the road, shooting off into a ridge. When you drove by you could see the targets people were using.

They just recommended sticking a regular piece of paper for center of mass and a 5x7 index card for the head on a target frame if you wanted to do drills.

If you need an alternative for the future, I think these are more useful since they have an extra target and they're more spread out, plus they're cheaper.

The glock 9mm models include the 17,18, 19, 26, 34, and 43.

17: full size

18: basically a full auto 17. Not civilian legal

19: slightly more compact. Virtually full size. They shaved half an inch off the barrel and grip.

26: small double stack gun made for ccw

34: longslide variant for competition shooters

43: single stack 9mm. Very small but glock was late to get on the single stack bandwagon.

So your best options here are the 17 or the 19 if you do choose to go with a glock in 9mm for home defense. Stick with gen 4 as they are supposedly vastly better than gen 3.

You are also going to want one of these. The strobe is VERY effective (I had my wife test it on me while mounted to a plastic training gun). https://www.amazon.com/Streamlight-Mounted-Tactical-Lumens-Batteries/dp/B00B8Q31UQ

This one is pretty popular among shield owners: https://www.amazon.com/Pearce-Grips-PG-MPS-Extension-Shield/dp/B00HB1SYCC/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1542318311&sr=8-2&keywords=shield+magazine+extension

It's not so much about the looks rather the feel of the gun when you're holding it. I find extension really helps with my hand placement. Ultimately, you'll find out what feels best for you. Congrats again on the purchase.

Simmons Truplex Adjustable Objective Prosport Riflescope (4-12X40, Matte) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000VYZMJO/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_oiMLzb5AG3AE2

It's not fancy, but it's clear. Plus, I put it on a rifle that is basically disposable. Still getting great performance. I'm happy.

u/LeonardoDaTiddies · 5 pointsr/liberalgunowners

Modern Monetary Theory (MMT) is just that, a theory. I do not subscribe to MMT. None of what I have said is based on MMT.

I am in a "Wall Street" industry. I have been making money for the past 10+ years taking the opposite side of trades for people talking about bond vigilantes, QE being inflationary, the USA becoming the next Greece, the US going bankrupt, etc. It's because I use an objective, fact-based analysis of the operational reality of modern monetary systems and am not an academic or politician using historical theories not rooted in reality.

Did you know Paul Krugman didn't incorporate the banking system into many of his models for a long time? Don't even get me started on the Austrian School dorks like Peter Schiff. I lost count of the number of calls they got wrong.

Several of the things you stated are factually incorrect and I explained why. I am beginning to think you don't care about objective facts and are much more interested in emotions and identity politics. It seems like you were trying to bait me into an argument over those but I'm not interested.

If you want to expand your understanding, I highly recommend Pragmatic Capitalism by Cullen Roche.

https://www.amazon.com/Pragmatic-Capitalism-Every-Investor-Finance/dp/1137279311/ref=tmm_hrd_title_0?ie=UTF8&qid=1397498215&sr=1-1

Best of luck in the future.

Ammo: I buy Federal white box FMJs for pistols and shit-tier Tula steel-cased for my AR-15. If you don't want to debase your rifle with the steel shit, American Frontier makes some cheap brass-cased ammo.

Gun safe: Here's a primer. I'm getting a cheap locking cabinet from Gander over the weekend - I just want something to keep my kids outta my guns, and the old 'hide it in a locked box on a high shelf' thing doesn't make me comfortable.

Extra mags: Yes. Buy from the pistol's manufacturer, or for AR-15s, I like PMags.

Reloader tool: Looking for like a magazine loader? They're good to have. I've never had a problem manually loading mags tho.

Range bag: yes. Bigger is better.

Holster: Safariland makes best-in-class holsters for all occasions.

Safety gear: I double up my hearing protection (muffs AND plugs). I use these for muffs, and whatever is cheap for plugs. I use my eye glasses as eye pro.

Also - you will want a soft bag for your pistol/rifle for transport to and from the range.

u/Seekhay · 1 pointr/liberalgunowners

I wouldn't recommend a soft bag (for reasons already pointed out), however I can recommend something like this https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00K7ENO6G/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I've been using mine for a couple of years now and I really like it. There are smaller and larger versions of it, however I find that even if I rarely bring 4 pistols with me, I can cram all kinds of other goodies in the case instead. (Like ear/eyepro, spare ear plugs, boxes of ammo etc.)

Edit: As someone who lives in north Jersey (Bergen County) I totally get your apprehension with respect to feeling like an outsider as a gunowner, take a look at https://www.theliberalgunclub.com and consider joining, I know that there's a NYC/NNJ chapter being created right now, though I don't know how close to the city you are.

Either way, enjoy your new found hobby!

u/Beej67 · 1 pointr/liberalgunowners

So can a Beeman air rifle, at approximately the same effectiveness, with muuuch cheaper ammunition. If your goal is to have something to hunt rabbits, consider this:

https://www.amazon.com/Beeman-Sportsman-Silver-10774GP-Caliber/dp/B01FEE43EK/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1522772998&sr=8-1&keywords=beeman+dual+caliber&dpID=31q1eXGHHbL&preST=_SY300_QL70_&dpSrc=srch

A .177 pellet at 1200 fps will take out most small game. Might not do a possum.

I bought one because I'm not allowed to discharge a firearm within 100 ft of a right of way in my municipality, and I needed to keep rabbits out of my garden. Legal definition of "firearm" doesn't include air rifles - chemically propelled projectiles only.

On the flipside, if you're talking about survival-math, calculate how many pounds of rice you can buy for the cost of your 10/22 and ammo.

One great positive of the 10/22, though, is you can take it to Appleseed. One of the best rifle training programs in the country IMO. You can meet lots of politically diverse folks there too.

u/Lampwick · 3 pointsr/liberalgunowners

Definitely recommend it. Look for the full collection of all the Isher stories, titled The Empire of Isher. The overarching story feels a bit "rushed", since it's assembled from a series of short stories, but the themes of government and self-determination are interesting. He also does a pretty clever thing where he portrays characters as mustache twirling villains from the perspective of the main character in one story, and then shows the same characters from a different perspective in other stories that shows they're not necessarily the bad guy... Good old classic 50's sci-fi.

I like the magpul flip up sites.

https://www.magpul.com/firearms-accessories/sights/see-all

A cheap magwell might be nice to see how you like them:

https://armaspec.com/product/magwell-grip/

Lancer mags are nice:

https://lancer-systems.com/awc/advanced-warfighter-magazines/

A red dot is a must have, lots of options and budget ranges, so pick your flavor.

A good trigger is nice, no idea what kind of trigger you like, but the obvious go to are the geissele:

https://geissele.com/rifle-parts/lower-parts/triggers.html

I've become a fan of the boresnake:

https://www.amazon.com/Hoppes-Boresnake-M-16-22-Caliber/dp/B0000C50K3/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1550425188&sr=8-3&keywords=hoppes+bore+snake+223

The strike industry charging handles are nice:

u/jsled · 13 pointsr/liberalgunowners

If the threat model is persistent intruder, then you might have an issue even with a safe that's not secured to the location.

If the thread model is "kids/guests", then any sort of lock box is going to be just fine.

As you say, a quick-access safe in discrete concealment might meet the best of both worlds. A GunVault Micro at 8.5" x 11" x 2.5" is going to need a pretty big "book" to conceal. The "Nano" line is only 8.2" x 6" x 1.8", a bit easier.

Also, there's plenty of in-plain-sight furniture (shelving, tables, &c.) along those lines.

u/NoOfficialComment · 0 pointsr/liberalgunowners

Strict rationality isn't always the best option.

> See above. Intelligent people understand that we already live in a society where it benefits to trust others. If you are selectively not trusting people in only one way, it's not rational.

This makes very little sense when you consider all the things we do and do not trust people with, you included. We trust other to make decisions on our behalf every day and we also agree to not trust others just as much. By the same token, I trust my fellow citizens to not want to murder me openly in the street and thus have no need for carrying a firearm in the street. You are taking a broad scientific principle of social trust and trying to use it as a justification for a very selective single situation.

> Contrary to what you may think, we are a rational, predictable species.

Not really, that's the whole point of the many cognitive biases we as humans hold. However we are predictable but this has nothing to do with rationality. This book is a good read.

u/Kreiger81 · 6 pointsr/liberalgunowners

If you have access to electronic ear muffs as well, those are AMAZING for first timers. (and, i mean, awesome in general, I find).

Whats nice is that they can still hear you relatively fine, but the shots are muffled.

I got a pair of these and it really, really reduces the "What did you say??" usually accompanied by starting to turn around while holding a loaded firearm.

Highly recommended.

u/Snake-Doctor · 11 pointsr/liberalgunowners

Exactly this. Black male here, I've recommended this book to several people over the years. My family and friends from the midwest and south, all support gun ownership and rights, but I grew up in Orange County, CA and I can count on one hand the number of friends (black white or brown) who are gun owners.

u/Slider_0f_Elay · 1 pointr/liberalgunowners

For the money, it's hard to beat Howard Leight. I have several sets of earpro, including Peltors, several loaner pairs of Caldwells, my gf has Walker's that she likes a lot, but the Howard Leights are cheap enough and quality enough that I both trust them and didn't mind buying a pair to forever live with my HD gun.
