Built in UPS and a little more power efficient. A Laptop should be quieter. I saw laptop so went with that.

A Desktop would be more cost efficient, particularly if you build from parts yourself. Does not really change the idea of an Nvidia Graphics, and a Core i5/7 or comparable AMD CPU. Nividia has open source Nouvea drivers. Most everything else hardware wise should be supported by the default kernel drivers. (At least internally. Printers and scanners and such are a crapshoot.)

If you want a Hard drive for occasional use, get an external that connects esata. Add an esata bracket and you will be able to boot for the drive, but can disconnect it completely when not in use.

I use Fedora, and kmod to keep the Nvidia binary module compiled for my running kernel. Steam works fine for me. About the only non-steam game I play is Wesnoth, so not an issue to get anything else working in Linux.

Wacoms works great in linux, I have 2 of em at home, the only thing with wacom is that they are quite expensive compared to the huion tablets which offers great value and pressure sensitivty, larger for less money, and also have battery less stylus.

However if you get a huion you will have to install a driver but should be easy.

https://github.com/DIGImend/digimend-kernel-drivers

The wacom equivalent is much more expensive than this huion. http://www.amazon.com/H610-Pro-Graphics-Drawing-Tablet/dp/B00GIGGS6A/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1426639551&sr=8-1&keywords=huion

programs:

Gimp(image manipulation) of course! Krita(Scetch & paint), mypaint(Scetch & paint), Inkscape(vector), blender if you want to do 3D sculpting, synfig studio for 2d animation, pinta.

nah, I think he's referring to these.
And personally, I wouldn't go for it OP. Even just assuming it has perfect detection, the tactile response of real keyboards and the general feel is pretty nice.

Intro

Command Line

You mentioned MIS, which is fine, but from a Computer Science perspective, I can't recommend this book enough:

Computer Architecture

Raspbian has basic programs written in Scratch and Java if you go to /home/user/Documents

You'll have to search under BlueJ and the other IDEs they use. Replace user with the user name.

Have fun :)

This is a knock off of Cherry MX Blue switches, but it's pretty good, albeit a bit bare-bones (no lighting or numpad) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01DBJTZU2/ref=cm_sw_r_sms_apip_Zpk5IvAKxoHln

Item list:

Pumpkin carving tool kit

1 large pumpkin from your local grocery store, however it is ideal if you can purchase it from a local organic farmer and pay in cash.

Basic scissors.

Office tape.

Candle.

---

THIS ASSUMES YOU HAVE ALREADY GUTTED THE PUMPKIN AND HAVE REMOVED THE TOP.

How to carve:

Step 1:

Get this template and print it out.

Step 2:

Cut excess paper around template away.

Step 3:

Tape to pumpkin using tape.

Step 4:

Using a tool from the kit that can poke holes, poke holes along the template, like a connect-the-dots kinda thing.

Step 5:

Remove template from pumpkin.

Step 6:

Use a tool with a sharp edge and connect all the dots whilst cutting a fairly deep line. This will make it easy to cut away the inside bits.

Step 7:

Using a sharp tool from the kit (be creative!), cut out those tiny accent lines around the outside, but not all the way through.

Step 8:

Do the face, same way as the lines. Don't go all the way through the pumpkin.

Step 9:

Cut out the body section. DO go all the way through for this bit.

Step 10:

The feet! Using the scraper tool, scrape them out pretty deep. Make them as evenly scraped as possible so the light looks good.

Step 11:

Remove lid. Put candle in pumpkin. Re-install lid.

Step 12:

Take picture with potato and edit on said potato.

Step 13:

You might want to check out the Huawei MateBook D (Ryzen 2500U).

It only folds flat though, so not exactly a 2-in-1.

LonTV has a review of it and it's got great out-of-the-box Linux support (the touchscreen even works on Ubuntu). Supports virtualisation too (just make sure you've got the right bios update).

It's very popular over on the r/AMD sub, so you can check for lots of testimonials there.

Currently on sale for $540 USD at Walmart (usual price $640).

Also available from Amazon, but it's $610 USD there.

It's insane value for the price.

PC sales comprises less than 30% of the entire computing market now (and shrinking more every year).

The point to understand here is that the "specialness" of the OS on those desktops will become less important. As PC desktops become seen more as a commodity - or a tool just to have a browser available - the more you will see people not caring what OS is in front of them.

Furthermore, as costs decline even further the cost of the proprietary OSes will become a problem. Some mini-pc's that are quite capable for an average user already sell for around $250 and with the OS comprising almost half that cost the free alternatives (Linux, ChromeOS, others) will be seen as more attractive.

The desktop, or rather the desktop OS, is a shrinking space for companies (Microsoft, Mac) to make their money.

Asus UX305

It is basically a new MacBook in terms of internals without the USB C for half the price. Listed at Amazon for 699.

I wiped windows off and installed elementaryOS, it is perfect for work. I havent done any 3D gaming on it, but it streams from Steam well enough, and plays 2D games without issue.

I'm down with this, but I already own an Alphasmart so there isn't much point in a project like this.

Edit: For me. There isn't much point in a project like this for me.

Jesus Christ, that is one of the worst cases I've read yet. Makes me glad I don't have to deal with it anymore. lol

These SSDs might be what you're looking for.

Honestly, once you're over on Linux, everything is so much simpler. Take a day or two to set it up and you'll be set.

u/The_Great_Danish · 18 pointsr/linuxmasterrace

Where? That looks pretty cool.
