I just read Changing Faces: New Game Minus, and the MC is a former NPC that becomes a "player", but doesn't know it's a game world. So he's dealing with nonsensical game mechanics (getting exp, getting stronger at a level up, etc.) and fully aware of how ridiculous it would be in a realistic world.

Definitely not clueless or stupid/bashful.

Link: https://www.amazon.com/Changing-Faces-Game-Minus-Book-ebook/dp/B07KMMT9TX

Some other recs:

Drew Hayes' series: Spells, Swords, & Stealth - "NPCs" in a Dungeons and Dragons-esque world have to become adventurers. The main characters definitely are aware of D&D tropes and aren't stupid. This is a really good series, and it's a good time to get into it as the next book is coming out next month.

https://www.amazon.ca/NPCs-Spells-Swords-Stealth-Book-ebook/dp/B00KB2RLKO

Hero of Thera: The MC gets sucked into a new world with game-like mechanics (leveling up, picking classes, new skills, new gear, etc.). So that I guess is an Isekai book. What sets it apart is the great writing and worldbuilding.

Also a good time to get into this, as book 2 should be coming out next month.

https://www.amazon.ca/Hero-Thera-LitRPG-Eric-Nylund-ebook/dp/B0719CYNCG

Full disclosure - I edited book 4 of Spells, Swords & Stealth and book 2 of Hero of Thera. But I'd recommend them even if I hadn't.

The Crafter by Outspan Foster. I haven't read this one yet, but I'm pretty pumped. Ordered the paperback. Set in a non-vr world.

Dante's Immortality. Highly recommended on this sub. Book 2 probably won't happen. Probably once a week asks about book 2. Still, so good that it's worth reading book 1 of an unfinished series. I think that's pretty high praise for it.

Sufficiently Advanced Magic. Another sub favorite. People argue whether or not it's LitRPG, most important thing is: it's dope.

Adventures on Brad. Nice slice of life in a non-vr fantasy world with game mechanics. Fun stuff.

A few others:

Adventurer Academy andIs It Wrong to Try and Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon.

Enjoy!

Recommendations with amazing world, amazing MC, amazing challenges. These are not 100% pure litrpg

I write comedy LitRPG that might be along the lines of what you're looking for. Definitely lighthearted, reviewers have compared it to the likes of Douglas Adams, Terry Pratchett and Monty Python.

Note there is an element of 'trapped' but only because the real world becomes the game, and the characters take it in their stride.

Here's a link for Level Up - https://www.amazon.com/dp/B079JFM67F

Another book I can recommend that ticks a lot of your boxes is Orcanomics (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00O2NDJ2M) It isn't strictly speaking LitRPG, but there are enough gaming terms that I'd be comfortable classifying it as gameLit. It's brilliant, extremely funny, with great characters and a very satirical take on the fantasy genre.

this is my favorite series i just started reading this one.

the first one is here https://smile.amazon.com/Land-Founding-Chaos-Seeds-Book-ebook/dp/B0172GEB68?ie=UTF8&qid=1465083761&ref_=sr_1_3&s=digital-text&sr=1-3

book teaser for the first one so you don't have to look

Getting eaten alive is the worst! Stabbings, maimings, and corrosive black magic are not that great either, but you really don't want to be a wolf treat!
That is the kind of hands on, “teeth on,” education you get when you are summoned to The Land.
James did not want to be summoned!
Not really... well a maybe, just a bit!
But he had certainly not AGREED to be summoned!

Well technically speaking he HAD agreed, but good god, who had the time to read all of that fine print when there was epic gaming to be done!
When DangerZone Industries had released the latest and greatest VRMMORPG, James, and millions of other virtual reality players, had sought purpose and self-definition in this new world. The tag line "Live the life your soul was meant for," had captured the hearts and minds of his entire generation.
"The Land," was the largest and most dynamic virtual reality game of all time. James and his friends had devoted countless hours, and become one of the top teams in the game. They were at the brink of greatness, but then there was this light! (it was predictably white, but whatever!)
When he was actually summoned to The Land, it was both disturbing and exhilarating. When he then became entangled in the eternal war of sprites and goblins, the unsavory practices of the local king, and had a memorable night at the inn called the Whistling Hen, he came to one clear conclusion: Again, getting eaten alive is really REALLY the worst!
While uncovering such deep philosophical knowledge, James will forge a place in this new world, and hopefully avoid the machinations of those who want him to destroy it. What does it mean to be a Chaos Seed anyway???

Agreed, crafting is probably my favorite part of any game-lit book and the item upgrade system is likely my favorite of those systems I've found. It's just very rarely used it seems. Other than the translated novel I mentioned the only fan-fiction I know off the top of my head that has made some form of progress is a Naruto fan-fiction called "Kenji the shinobi craftsmen" or some such which is still in it's early days.

To be honest I really wish there was a book that was just focused on a guy getting either this item upgrade system or some other crafting power and it just being a story of him either traveling around and crafting stuff or a story about them just starting a small shop in the middle of nowhere and it some how becoming famous. It gets tiresome reading the same story about how he gets this power and becomes the most amazingly powerful person or goes on to save the universe/etc.

A solid example of what i mean is Siphon by Jay Boyce. The main character is great at magic but so far she seems to want to be in the background providing the research/items that make others powerful and let them go on to do things. I'm unsure if that will change in later books as only the first one has come out so far though.

I do believe I am rambling. I just want a more crafting intensive/in-depth book and less op adventure.

u/sapidus3 · 16 pointsr/litrpg

I enjoyed theArcheologist warlord by E.M. Hardy (technically I suppose you would say it is sci-fi, but it feels more like fantasy). The main character gets transformed into a sentient space pyramid thing. At first I thought it would be more of a dungeon building thing, but he ends up sending workers out to gather resources, build pylons to extend his range, construct different units, ect.

It's not litRPG but the Bobiverse books by Dennis Taylor are fantastic and definitely get some of the 4x, spanning across the galaxy vibe as the bobs spread throughout space.

Are you interested in settlement/city building?

u/ForgottenManOnline · 2 pointsr/litrpg

I think one of the best series for this is probably Continue Online by Stephen Morse. The story has such a consistent tone of depression and overcoming challenge that is occasionally livened up by humour, moments of glory and other wonderful stuff that made it an insightful read (for me, anyway).

https://www.amazon.com/Continue-Online-Part-One-Memories-ebook/dp/B016O7ZQRY/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=Continue+Online&qid=1557559193&s=gateway&sr=8-1

I really think that LitRPG, as a young genre, lacks this consistency of tone with contrasting elements. I'm trying to write something like this as a web-series and I'd appreciate your feedback since you seem to have such a strong grasp of it.

My bad, didn't notice the audiobook part, just the exciting combat part.

Patch 17; locked in game story (or maybe portal into game-world?), lots of great combat and multiple audiobooks. Character gets glitch-stuck in a locked expansion surrounded by demon NPCs, right as everyone who plays the game gets uploaded into it (there are some unexplained non-scientific stuff about that, that make me wonder if it's actually an upload and not really a portal story).

Adventures on Brad; dungeon crawling fantasy story containing no earthlings. Easier/lower level story, a trilogy, but the fights are decent for what I consider a YA level book.

The System Apocalypse; real life apocalypse story. Fighting is good, as is the writing, and there are 4 (5?) audiobooks already (and a few more books already published that haven't gotten an audio treatment).

Codename: Freedom; VRMMORPG, with zero magic to start but lots of fighting. Decent for a VR book, I'm not usually a fan of those but I've listened to the first two books and am looking forward to the third.

Arcane Survivalist; apocalypse caused by a portal-story (scientist semi-accidentally sends the system back though his portal into the real world). Action is great, though writing could have been better. Same writer wrote another story I've read, but I can't remember how much action there is in it.

Forever Fantasy Online; VRMMORPG turned portal-story. I'll admit the whole thing wasn't amazing, but you're just looking for action and I liked the action.

You're Not Allowed to Die; end of life single-player VR sim turned portal-story (the MC doesn't know that, though). This one is hard, as I liked it but the character starts with some insane OP equipment. Still, this and the sequel were both enjoyable.

The Land; I'm not even linking this one, people here have a hate-hardon for it. Still, as long as you look past the bro-ish behavior and tone, great books with lots of action.

Well I don't listen to litrpg audiobooks much, however I can recommend a few. Orconomics is great. Currently I'm listening to Into the abyss and it's pretty good as well.

u/Reijm · 2 pointsr/litrpg

Its not heavy on the Litrpg but The Animus series is really a quick fun read. And I feel that it stands out in having interesting side characters and a main character that actually has development in his personality.

The story is a sci-fi action adventure and there are now 6 books to read so if you like it you have a bit to go.

I strongly recommend a KU (Kindle Unlimited) subscription on amazon, typically there are deals this time of year

the genre is blessed in that practically every litrpg book of note is available on KU

among KU, I'd recommend starting with Life Reset and Ascend Online

for online litrpg, as mentioned Royal Road is a great source. Some of the ones of note there:

  • Azarinth Healer - brawling tank (female protag, and don't let the title fool you, it's a bit of a running joke where people underestimate her because she's 'just a healer', then she beats the crap out of them)
  • Delve - deep dive into the math and system geekery
  • Chrysalis - reincarnated as an ant

adjacent to litrpg is progression fantasy, which is all about, well, progressing from weak to strong and small to big

on KU the Cradle series is based on eastern cultivation novels and Divine Dungeon is a fantastic intro to the dungeon core genre

on RR, Mother of Learning is absolutely stunning

there aren't many with female protags, but of the ones there are, practically all of them are OP, including Siphon and Metaworld Chronicles. Among the ones that aren't, you have Stonehaven League and Forge of Destiny (also cultivation like Cradle, you can keep up with the original quest here)
u/SaintPeter74 · 3 pointsr/litrpg

What is interesting is that LitRPG is basically a sub-genre of the "Portal Fantasy", like Narnia or The Chronicles of Amber. There are a number of LitRPG examples where the story has the main character transported to a fantasy world where everyone has "levels".

The "Chaos Seeds" Series by Aleron Kong has the main character transported to a world where all people have stats, levels, and skills.

The Arcane Emperor web series has a similar conceit - everyone in that land has stats, levels, and skills and a "character sheet".

Hero of Thera and Worth the Candle also has the MC transported to a fantasy/sci-fi world with a character sheet. (Worth The Candle, BTW, is excellent and updates regularly.)

In Super Sales on Super Heroes the main character gets a super power where he has character sheet "in the real world" - this is sort of LitRPG adjacent (Harem warning, Slavery warning). Decent book, even if the MC is a bit amoral.

One of the things I like about the genre is that there a many roads to the "game". Some are just VR based, others are a portal fantasy, while still others have game-like elements in "real life". There are a ton of approaches.

I am excited to see how the genre grows as new authors enter the space and we move further from the "Light Novel" origins. I can't wait to get further away from Asian style grinding and Russian style misogyny and misanthropy.

>quintessential LitRPG novel -- the best one that's also the best example of the genre and its style

A single one doesn't exist yet.

https://www.amazon.com/Land-Founding-LitRPG-Chaos-Seeds-ebook/dp/B0172GEB68 is often how most people find the genre based solely on marketing/promotions. However, if you read the book after reading high quality fantasy novels it's likely you'll be disappointed.

The best books are in sister genres. https://www.amazon.com/Unsouled-Cradle-Book-Will-Wight-ebook/dp/B01H1CYBS6 for cultivation, and https://www.amazon.com/Sufficiently-Advanced-Magic-Arcane-Ascension-ebook/dp/B06XBFD7CB for progression fantasy.

u/Yangoose · 22 pointsr/litrpg

While not a LitRPG I feel like the Bobiverse scratches the same itch very well.

It's about a guy who's consciousness is put into a robot and shot off into space. He has 3D printers that can create anything he can think of, including copies of himself. While not living "in a game" he still creates his own VR world that he shares with his copies and can control his perception of time by speeding up/slowing down his processor.

He explores, invents, creates and discovers tons of amazing stuff.

Post Human is my #1 favorite story on RR. It’s complete too!

It feels like a hybrid between the Bobiverse series with its main character self replication and r/HFY’s Chrysalis with the way its AI main character manages things. I reccomend both of those as well.

Bobiverse (paid): https://www.amazon.com/Are-Legion-Bob-Bobiverse-Book-ebook/dp/B01LWAESYQ/ref=nodl_

Chrysalis (free) (The most similar to Post Human and said to be a major inspiration for it.) https://www.reddit.com/r/HFY/comments/55v9e1/comment/d8e0t50?utm_source=amp&utm_medium=&utm_content=comment_vote

I've just peppered this board with links to my book... but it's relevant here too.
It's Harem, but I am willing to bet you'll be pleasantly surprised by the story. Has lots of action, some minor epic craziness, and miles of explicit smut.
Book one is currently a best seller and Book 2 is currently #2, right behind it.

I didnt mean to downplay how difficult and expensive it can be to get professionally done cover art. I was just trying to say that I personally much more prefer the usual plain cover/abstract art over a cover that looks like it was made by a 14 year old on deviantart. It doesnt even need to be an RPG related cover because most of MY favorite litrpgs have random covers, here a list of a few that come to mind:

Hero of Thera(a picture of a zodiac dragon)
https://www.amazon.com/Hero-Thera-LitRPG-Eric-Nylund-ebook/dp/B0719CYNCG

Awaken online(cover only has a silhouette of a cat)
https://www.amazon.com/Awaken-Online-Catharsis-Travis-Bagwell-ebook/dp/B01J0E8Z8A

Crota, Gods Game(originally was a generic looking stock photo of storm clouds, now updated the cover to a blue colored gate)

Login Accepted: Incipere Online(simple blue background with a symbol focus that looks like it was made in MS Paint)

The Two Week Curse: Ten Realms(solid black background with random abstract blue symbol)

I've noticed from many of the recommended books on amazon have beautiful cover arts but if you bother to read a demo of it, youll see the majority of them lack the basic typography, formatting, and editing. I find these MUCH more important than a pretty cover because some stories are almost unreadable without them.

I cant speak for others but i mostly pick books by word or mouth, reddit/goodread, new monthly publish, what's new on audible, and sometimes even author's self promotions.

u/morgancolelitrpg · 3 pointsr/litrpg

If you what you are looking for is 100% the game mechanics, give it a shot. Setting, game system, skills/magic, crafting, city building are all pretty cool.

If humor, prose or characters in any way, shape, or form have any impact whatsoever on your enjoyment, dont bother. Save your money for something with more profound conversations and character depth, like Dora the Explorer or something.

I wouldnt say there is many interesting ways of using the game mechanics. Theres a lot of "Deus Ex! Pow! I'm OP" and then dropping any relevance to that aspect of the story for 4 books. There could be some unconventional blends of power in the 7th book, but I didnt get that far.

Instead give Beginners luck a go. Unconventional setting and unique game-mechanics for the MC.

  1. Worth the Candle
  2. NPCs (Spells, Swords & Stealth)
  3. The Land

I feel like A Practical Guide to Evil would hands-down be number one on this list if more people agree'd with me that it was a litrpg piece. The main character class development and abilities are straight out of the genre in my opinion, but there is no overt acknowledgement of this in the text. I can't recommend all four of these enough. Worth the Candle and a Practical Guide are both available free via the author's websites, so they have that going for them also.
u/murderdude · 1 pointr/litrpg

It's by Pegaz A and the book can be found here. This is the description provided by amazon.

" For John, death was merely the beginning. Transmigrating into a new world granted him an opportunity to change his view on life.

With power and immortality as new goals, he is willing to pay any price. Unfortunately, there are those willing to take advantage of him and his unfamiliarity with a new world. Shadows behind the curtains, unwilling to reveal themselves, will trick him into doing their bidding.

Now, John faces an entire kingdom on his own. Deceived? Conned? They don't care. His actions carry a sin none of them are willing to forgive.

With the world as an enemy, John will fight to accomplish his goals. His path will be stopped by no one.

Read this novel to enjoy a journey of self-discovery, ambition and revenge. Inspired by classical LitRPG, Xianxia and Fantasy, Idle System is a new take on these genres. If you've enjoyed novels like Ready Player One, Main Character Hides his Strength or Dodge Tank, then you're bound to love this book "

Obviously the obligatory nod to Ready Player One is an instant turn-off for me, a book I would consider one of my least favorites. Again, the description is quite vague and cookie-cutter.

u/onevu · 3 pointsr/litrpg

I recently finished Hero of Thera by Eric Nylund. I enjoyed the story and almost all of the plot threads were wrapped up in the end. Nylund's writing and experience from the Halo franchise shine here, differentiating it from most litrpg's.

Oh boy I'm about to say some risky shit. Ok if you are new new to the genre I recommend "The Land: Founding" by Aleron Kong https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B0172GEB68?notRedirectToSDP=1&ref_=dbs_mng_calw_0&storeType=ebooks

The reason is he does quality work and you will probably enjoy them. The reason I said it was risky is many people have problems with him IRL. My suggestion is to ignore all of that and check out the books.
