As for whether or not Christian is any more real in the finale than in the first episodes, we receive a straightforward explanation as to why he appears in the island timeline, and a straightforward explanation as to why he appears in the finale. Seems difficult to debate.

I think a lot of the resistance to your theory is coming from the fact, as the creators insisted throughout the run of the series, Lost was a character-based show. The mythology of the island and the genre elements were a lot of fun, but the characters were meant to be the main event.

If the entirety of the series is taking place in Jack's head, it negates the importance of the very large cast; including the favorite characters of many (if not most) of the viewers. Further, a major thematic concern of the series is the dichotomy of "us vs. them," and the manner in which this breaks down given familiarity with those around us -- naturally, this theme cannot exist if all is within Jack's mind. Finally, the series presentation of the afterlife in season 6 is entirely based on the idea that what is most important in life is those around us ("nobody does it alone"), and that we should embrace others, no matter what that circumstances are that bring us together.

You mentioned an interest in the literary traditions Lost mentions; you might be interested in Edward Said's literary criticism, in particular his work on "Orientalism". This concerns the creation of an "Other," the implications of which should be clear with regard to its relation to the series, and a vital thematic element which must be negated if all is within Jack's head.

Sidebar: thanks for taking the time to continue the discussion here. Even though I disagree with your theory, the discourse surrounding the show always has been (and continues to be) the best thing about the series, and a large part of what makes it so worthwhile.

It's the book "S." , which was conceived by JJ Abrams and written by Doug Dorst. Haven't gotten to open it yet, but it looks like a library book titled "Book of Thesus" , and it's 2 stories involving the actual book and someone who I think buys/rents the book. It is a mystery that you solve as you go, it is supposed to have clues and such in it. People who've read it say it's super fun, as long as you go into believing the book is real. I may be making this up, but I think there may be other things in the book that tie in to Lost, like the numbers, but again, I haven't read it. Can't wait to get home and give it a whirl. Here's the Amazon link.

Lost Humanity and Lost Thought by Pearson Moore are two of the best I've read regarding the show after it had finished airing. They're a little heady but very interesting and well backed up. Nikki Stafford's books are also good, but I'd only worry about reading this one, because the rest, while good, were written before the show was complete.

Nikki Stafford's 'Finding Lost' series is excellent.

Every season has its own book (1 and 2 share a book) but it has very detailed write ups of each episode, along with popular theories at the time, etc.

Great stuff.

What I read in the day: https://www.amazon.com/Finding-Lost-Unofficial-Nikki-Stafford/dp/1550227432/ref=sr_1_2?keywords=finding+lost+nikki&qid=1550832170&s=gateway&sr=8-2

Look at her amazon reviews! The first book is for season 1 & 2, The remaining seasons each gets its own book.

She has a great (old) blog with about 300 LOST posts. Many were done just after the episode originally aired.

She also hosted a S1-5 weekly rewatch blog done in 2009-2010 http://lost-rewatch.blogspot.com/2009/05/lost-rewatch-schedule.html

The first episode rewatch blog as an example: http://lost-rewatch.blogspot.com/search/label/1.01%20Pilot%20Part%201

Nikki has been my best source of objective info about the series and other TV as well. Hope this helps you.

I had a blog back in the day where we discussed each episode in separate recap posts. It gained traction near the end of season 3 and just kept growing. Lots of good discussions. I'll still respond to comments with my unspoilery thoughts as well. Several binge watchers still visit and comment from time to time.

Links to each individual recap: http://www.tvaddictsblog.com/p/lost-addicts.html

Actually, some of the posts in it were included in a LOST e-book Compilation. It's a collection of lots of material from lots of the popular LOST bloggers at the time. Not saying I was one of them, just honored I was included! It contains in-depth discussions of LOST as a whole and on an episode to episode basis. It's massive and I wouldn't recommend trying to read the entire thing. But it would be a great companion through your journey with interactive links to get where you need to get in the book. I have a discount linked on my site, but I wouldn't blame you for going with the Kindle version.

Enjoy the show! It's quite a ride.

My girlfriend and I are huge fans, so I decided to surprise her with this. Along with this, many of the presents I got her were Lost-related. She loved it all!

In case anyone is interested, there are [dharma food labels] (http://maxpictures.com/weblog/2007/04/10/lost-labels-for-your-dharma-initiative-needs/) you can download. I printed them on this [label paper.] (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005ZXCWFI?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s00)

Of course, the Milk chocolate bars were regular Hershey bars.

The cheese crackers were a box of Cheez-its

The beer six pack was a combo of 'Blue Moons' and 'Not Your Father's Rootbeer.'

Oh, and the cookies in the second pic were just snickerdoodles I baked (unrelated to Lost).

I just bought the Terminator 2 Extreme DVD new at Blockbuster for $5.99!

Now to find an awesome deal on the Alien Quadrilogy (since I already have all the movies, and just want it as a box set).

Great book by Alan Sepinwall about the shows (several already mentioned in this thread) of the last decade and a half transforming TV. An educated look at your favorites, and perhaps an introduction to a couple that you haven’t watched yet.

A good springboard for each episode is the Finding Lost books. She goes into detail for all the literacy references on the show, actor and writer bios, what the hype was like each season and even stuff like how the Writers Strike impacted Season 4. It's really in-depth and she goe episode by episode so no fear of spoilers. Seasons 1 & 2 share the first book so you can just start there. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1550227432/ref=pd_lpo_sbs_dp_ss_1?pf_rd_p=1944687502&pf_rd_s=lpo-top-stripe-1&pf_rd_t=201&pf_rd_i=1550228781&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_r=1Q2XEJ83MBNGW47255JJ

I've read his book, Bad Twin. It was pretty good.

u/Pliknotjumbo · 2 pointsr/lost

I don't know if it's available in the US or if it's in your price range (I'm from the UK) but this is what I have and it's top notch

Thank you for the response. I did see warnings on one of them about being a Chinese knock-off, but this is the one I was going to get - the Region 2 set from amazon.co.uk. https://www.amazon.co.uk/Lost-Complete-Season-1-6-Blu-ray/dp/B003OBZ6HE/ref=tmm_blu_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&qid=1537375034&sr=8-1

Do you think this is the official one? It's only 50.00 GBP!

u/stef_bee · 2 pointsr/lost

Pearson Moore doesn't go episode by episode; his books are arranged by theme (Humanity, Thought, Identity etc.) While I don't agree with everything, they're very thought-provoking.
