Yeah, 128 is tight. I already wish I had opted for the 256Gb drive in my Air. It's also 128Gb, though I do have a tiny Windows 7 partition there too. I think it's 40 or 38Gb.

That's enough for two or three big game installs, which is about right for me when traveling. I replace them with whatever I feel like playing for the next couple weeks, etc.

I keep movies and music on a teeny key-drive, though, which helps save space, and is accessible from either bootup. This one, if you care: 32Gb USB drive

Get a Filco Majestouch. I have the tenkeyless version, and it's pretty amazing. I liked to the brown keys (tactile feedback, not too much clicky sound), but they also have blue and possibly black/red if you're interested.

Works fine with macs. I swapped the positions of the windows and alt keycaps to fit the usual mac layout, then you just have to go into keyboard settings and swap them there are well.

OK, sounds good! I'll give it a shot. Just ordered from Amazon. Thanks man! A quick heads-up for anyone else who's interested because there's seems to be a little confusion. There are two models: this one: $48 (which says: [OLD MODEL] in the product name) & this one: $46. I got the latest model which, because of a discounting, is actually cheaper! lol

I use this PICTEK gaming mouse it is 17 bucks and has 3 different sensitivity levels that can be switched between. Two standard mouse buttons, clickable scroll wheel for 3rd button and then two side buttons.

I've used it for Destiny 2 on PC and it has worked fine for me.

Main downsides are that any of the programming features are only available on PC and also without a PC the LED is basically just a color cycle through the rainbow. I have mine hooked up to a KVM so I configured it on a PC and those changes carry through to Mac as well. If you have a boot camp partition or a friend with a PC you can configure the mouse on that and switch it back. The changes will stick if the mouse is unplugged.

Main upside is that is is fairly comfortable, very responsive, and 17 dollars or less depending on the coupons available when you order.

I don't know of any USB C mice at this time. Also I don't think that any mice out there with LED colors have the ability to have those LED lights customized on a Mac.

Awesome, thank you!

I seriously wanted to go with a thunderbolt setup but I just couldn't justify the cost for what would ultimately be used for data storage and older games. I couldn't find any solid info about how well thunderbolt worked in Windows.

I hope the prices on the thunderbolt stuff comes down sooner than later.

Maybe this would have been a better choice?

I have a $50ish corsair keyboard and $30ish corsair mouse I use with my mac mini. They are awesome. Plug and play. Nothing to fiddle with. Sleek and satisfying. They're seriously great.

Yes, I have a MacBook Air with 200GB memory, and with Dota 2 and Portal taking up around 50GB, I use an external hard drive. I got a 1TB Samsung one from Amazon for around £55, works just fine for me. Just have to select it in preferences-downloads if you use steam. Hope that helps! :) (It has USB 3.0 also)

I've managed to get an Xbox360 wireless controller working with one of these (since the wireless XBox controllers use a proprietary radio signal, not bluetooth) and this, but each time it's a crapshoot whether or not it'll work, so I would not necessarily recommend.

I have also had the opportunity to use a wireless PS3 controller, and it worked flawlessly right away. I didn't use it for very long (I borrowed it for testing purposes from a friend), so I don't have a lot of experience... but it seems like a better bet.

I use the Razer Naga 2014. The mechanical side buttons feel really nice to use. Razer's "Synapse" software works decently well with Mac, as you can bind any button to a multitude of functions. The only issue I've run into is that the OS-level mouse tracking seems to reset to 0 on reboot. Not a huge issue. I would definitely purchase this mouse again if mine were to ever go up (had it for about 11 months now with no issues.)

The Logitech G600 has decent reviews, although I didn't go with it because a) the side buttons are squishy, and b) the software only works in Windows, so if you want to rebind keys to something else, you're out of luck.

A cheaper option is the Redragon Perdition, which is a newer "MMO mouse." I couldn't verify, but I don't believe this one has any Mac software either. However, the buttons are still just numeric keys, so if you don't need anything crazy, it should be fine. You can also store the button profiles on the device, so if you have a Windows install, you can apply it there then use it in OS X.

There's also the UtechSmart Venus. Not bad reviews; fairly new; cheap. Like the two previous mice, I don't believe it has any Mac software, but the extra buttons will still function.

Here's the one I bought. Got it since it was super cheap at target and I had a $10 gift card from target. It works perfectly with my 13" MBP, I lost the usb for the fan so its off all the time and still works.

I've been itching to get a Steelseries mechanical keyboard for my mac - seems like it would suit the relatively simplistic look, and honestly they make the best (affordable) mechanical keyboard at the moment, as far as I can tell.

What I'm looking at getting: http://www.amazon.com/SteelSeries-6Gv2-Mechanical-Gaming-Keyboard/dp/B0038X3ZVM

Also considering the 'stealth' or whatever the blank one is called - mechanical keyboard with blank key uppers, all keys printed on the front side. Looks cool.

What might help is being mindful of the surface you keep it on while playing. A flat table/desk with good ventilation on the sides where the vents are will be helpful. I’ve also seen various platform things that have fans that blow from underneath that I’ve used on older MBPs in the past that had a habit of overheating before throttling was a thing.

Edit: something like this

So first: Headset or headphones? Huge difference.

Don't get anything that is branded as "gaming" gear if you care for any decent level of audioquality. If your iMac has a decent enough mic build in, I'd recommend getting some headphones like these. They are comfy, decent quality and audioquality.

I have not purchased this as of yet, but I've read that a HyperDrive can really help with your storage space very simply (my 2011 Macbook Pro is still running strong with upgraded RAM & SSD). A HyperDrive turns your SD slot into more storage space.

HyperDrive on Amazon

The company advertises different models, but from what I've read (again, haven't purchased one myself yet), it's only for aesthetics, since SD card slots are universal in size. If I were to buy a rMBP, this would be something I purchased along with it.

Don't buy a 3rd party controller. You don't save much money, but you do end up with a much higher likelihood of compatibility problems and lower quality of parts.

Either get the official wired controller or the wireless version for another $15. Both work great with the tattiebogle drivers.

There is one 3rd party device that works though. You can also grab a used official wireless controller from gamestop and use this generic wireless usb receiver on the mac, works perfect with the same drivers on Mavericks.

u/Dippyskoodlez · 3 pointsr/macgaming

A fan blowing on it will be about the best thing you could do, but it should be stable under standard conditions (Not sitting on a blanket insulating it, in an acceptable ambient temperature).

From my experience a fan will reduce temperatures a little, but it's just going to end up turboboosting more because of the increased cooling capacity which should give you more performance, but it won't be too noticable.

I've seen a lot of USB fan based stands die, or just suck at doing anything meaningful so I use this: http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-939-000181-Portable-Lapdesk-N315/dp/B002NTADVW

I use my wireless 360 controller with this and it works great. It's not an official microsoft product, but I have had no problems besides needing to restart occasionally to make them talk to each other.

You'll need to install these drivers and you'll be good to go!

u/konnnnn · 1 pointr/macgaming

No, a propriety receiver because Microsoft. See here on Amazon for the product.
