I discovered this stuff when I ordered a huge 3 ton hand winch, and it came supplied with this rope rather than steel cable. So much easier on the hands. I picked up lighter strength rope and swapped out the steel cable on my shop hoist as well. I'm going to swap out my cable for this on my Honda SxS as well. Good luck.

Here's a link to some pretty serious rope at Amazon. If this isn't the length or strength you want, just search at Amazon for "synthetic Winch Rope"

Synthetic Winch Rope 3/8" x 85' - 25000 Ibs Winch Line Cable Rope with Protective Sleeve for 4WD Off Road Vehicle ATV UTV SUV Motorcycle https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07H5CYGBK/ref=cm_sw_r_other_apa_i_mXS6CbN8EHDPD

Edit: I know that much larger strength is available by the spool because work boats in the gulf use it a lot. You might have to do a google search to find a spool.

Tucking the wrists into the gloves isn't a guarantee. Just a few days ago I found that out the hard way. I was propping myself up in a weird position working on an overhead groove and molten metal spilled out and dripped into the top of my glove, burned me pretty good. But on the plus side, it burned me in the shape of the Little Dipper constellation, so that'll look pretty rad if it scars up, haha. I've only been welding since last summer, but I've learned quickly that if you're stick welding, the sparks will find you. Better safe than sorry! THIS is the jacket I've been using. Not as stylish as yours, but it does a good job and the price was right.

That's a bummer they won't ship over there, though. I never really thought about the consumables being different over there though, so I guess that makes sense.

And yeah, the briefcase welders are pricey. I've heard of people picking them up used at a reasonable price, but definitely out of my price range as well.

This. Go with a braided nylon rope. Here's what I bought (I use 3/8, but I'm thinking about giving the 1/4 a try): https://www.amazon.com/SGT-KNOTS-Utility-Rope-Made/dp/B01DKWDE1G/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1482768561&sr=8-2&keywords=nylon+rope

I'm guessing that link won't do you a ton of good so here's a link to what is close to the same thing on amazon.co.uk. The mm to inches isn't an exact match but I think it's pretty close (the imperial system of measurements is so dumb). Anyways, here's the link: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Blackspur-Braided-Rope-mtrs-Colours/dp/B007MJXHVQ/ref=sr_1_20?ie=UTF8&qid=1482768568&sr=8-20&keywords=nylon+rope

Of course, the length of rope you get is really up to your preference. I usually go for something between 50-100 feet (~15-30 meters)

As far as in store vs. online - I've found that I can get a lot better prices online. I'm not sure what magnet you've got now but you can get a neo with 90 kg of pull for 23 pounds here: https://www.amazon.co.uk/d/Home-Kitchen/first4magnets-F4MA48M8-EYE-1-Diameter-Neodymium-Clamping-Magnet-Pull/B003MWDRO4/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1482768958&sr=8-2&keywords=magnet+fishing

175lb magnet and 1200lb tensile strength rope from Paracord planet on Amazon was what I was recommended.

Looked back and order was cheaper those two and gloves for about the cost of your magnet. Can always move up. What I was recommended below.

Rivers are still too high for kayaking safely so can't really speak on it but was not overkilling it and am totally not a strong enough person to pull out an ATM or safe. Figure I can get more later but if I do something stupid it's better to have a cheaper smaller magnet and I can just use my phone to get GPS coordinates to the bigger item that forces my hand on a pricier one.

May have better advice from others.

Not really the place, but still :)

Sounds like all you need is a telescopic grabber or something similar. You can probably find those at the hardware store. If you want something powerful, even though it's small, make sure it's a neodymium (rare earth) magnet.

This is the setup I have and it works great!

I'm not a pro, but I just bought a set up that's arriving tomorrow. It's not "as cheap as possible" but I think it's pretty cheap in general, so long as you don't lose magnets.

This is the magnet I bought, per the guide.

https://brutemagnetics.com/products/ox-magnetics-round-neodymium-magnet-with-countersunk-hole-and-eyebolt-500-lbs-pulling-force-3-54-diameter

This is the rope he recommended:

Besides that, get yourself a good set of gloves and a bucket.

u/edenrestored · 2 pointsr/magnetfishing

Yeah, I'd check out paracord 750 - The next step up from what you have, which is 5 mm in size. Although, only being 1 mm more, might not make a huge difference.

A lot of people use 1/4 inch (called para-max) which is like 6.4mm. You'd probably be ok with something like this - 1000lb tensile strength. Although that is below 1300, I don't understand what could be stronger than this, I've yet to see any higher than this, so maybe what I said about the rope being stronger is wrong. There's people out there with 3500 magnets, so idk wha they use besides steel cables haha: https://www.amazon.ca/Paracord-Planets-Tensile-Strength-Midnight/dp/B01GK7KW9A/ref=sr_1_2?crid=30JHU7OV8I4SH&keywords=1%2F4+inch+paracord&qid=1564660963&s=gateway&sprefix=1%2F4+inch+para%2Caps%2C154&sr=8-2

Here's what I got - It's still only 550 lb breaking strength but its 8 mm thick! Should make pulling a breeze! This is from Canada, so maybe search for something similar on the .com https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B07HML8T9D/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o04_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1

This helped me a lot, it's a size comparison chart showing thickness up to 1/4: https://www.paracordplanet.com/cord-comparison-chart/

I just ordered that for the same magnet you bought. Can't speak from experience yet but the strength is just under double the max pull and it's specifically for magnet fishing. It has good ratings too.

Your boyfriend is right, it's another crazy hobby... but I promise once he sees what you start pulling from the waters he's going to want his own magnet!

u/joen143 · 8 pointsr/magnetfishing

There are a lot of Chinese sellers that are swamping the market now with cheap products. I bought a kit off there from a company based in the U.S. and got lucky. Super powerful magnet. Thick enough rope that floats on the surface too. You try and find a solid core double braided rope to go with your magnet. It doesn’t stretch as much and has more abrasion resistance. Link

u/MLDsmithy · 1 pointr/magnetfishing

Yeah, it's just a thread sealant; keeps the threads from banging loose over time (which they do). UK might have a different version, but loctite is pretty prolific, I'd be surprised if you don't have it. Link below off the US market for reference; this is the blue stuff, which will keep the threads from coming loose, but will still let you remove it if you actively try. Another nut could work, but thread sealer is better for the purpose; it's also cheap, and the tiniest bottle will last a very long time. It only takes a drop or two on the threads.

I also recommend this. Optionally, a five gallon bucket and an ice scraper for scraping small parts off your magnet also come in handy. Most importantly, have fun!

u/tralce · 1 pointr/magnetfishing

This is the magnet I got and I like it quite well. Excellent for an entry and mid level fishing magnet.

Brute 880, 20% off coupon, first time users of the amazon assistant download can search for it from there and get another 10 bucks off, pick a slower than 2 day free delivery date and they give you a little bit more credit.
turns 46 bucks into 26 faster than I could type this, gp, not counting the 6% back by using the amazon credit card or that annoying no interest for 6 months.

Worked for me, not like that jacked up JC Penny sale for womens swim wear half off. False advertising that day. gp
