My current shopping want list far exceeds my current purchase funds which are approximately zero. But here are some of my more realistic in the near future wants, as opposed to the various designer pieces I've salivated over but will probably never be able to afford unless I win the lottery or something.

Top of the list is new sandals. Digging the design on the Dr. Marten Gryphons and they're on sale in my usual size in the dark brown color but reviews describing off sizing and lack of comfort both have me a little hesitant. Also, I would prefer them in white or tan possibly as most of my shoes are already black or dark brown.

Somewhere slightly below that is a pair of good casual slip-ons/loafers/pimsolls. Something classic but with a cool detail like these or a classic loafer for more casual/formal verstality

And while staying on the shoe conversation, something I would also very much like but is probably the least needed of various footwear options is another pair of good cuban heel boots. I have a black pair that serves me well but I'd like to invest in something in the aforementioned white or tan colors. I also like these pair of dark brown ones for the various details though the color wouldn't be my first choice.

Also, and more realistically the thing I'd be able to afford first is more short sleeve shirts as my closet is overrun with long sleeve tops at the moment. Particularly looking for cool or interesting patterns that aren't necessarily floral since I've been going hard on the floral the past few months. Interested in suggestions on this, particularly in slim fits as I'm a lanky guy and a lot of men's tops swallow my body up.

Last summer necessity is shorts. I've always preferred jeans for bottoms personally, but living in the deep South, shorts are an absolute necessity in the summer. Any suggestions on good and affordable men's shorts for tall lanky guys would be helpful as well.

okay, so I'm going to write a really long post right now. the point is to show you guys how easy sewing is and maybe convince someone to pick up a machine and save some $$$.

at the start of last summer I knew nothing about sewing or garment making/tailoring at all. I picked up a Brother CS-6000i because of its reviews and price.

my first project was this pencil pouch clutch thing I made for my girlfriend: pic. It's small enough that I was able to get fabrics from the remnants bin at JoAnn's. I used the tutorial here.

second thing I ever made was a purse for my sister: pic. it's a really simple 3-piece pattern. The tutorial came from a book called Sew Everything.

... then I took a really long break from sewing.

my most recent two projects are in this album. I just decided to dive into patterns and learn whatever I didn't know along the way. Keep in mind every pattern comes with detailed directions on how to construct the garment. The directions are brief but are great about using descriptive, established lingo. You can youtube almost any term and get a detailed video on how to carry out that technique. the whole process is really just a matter of sewing cutout pattern pieces right sides together (so the seams are hidden when the right sides are turned outward), and doing that in the correct order. then seams that aren't sewn to another piece (such as the bottom hem on a pair of jeans) are turned inward a couple times so the raw edge is hidden, then sewn with a straight stitch.

as far as alterations go, I just modified a couple pieces I got from uniqlo: pics. the shirt was a basic tee made from a jersey fabric (think basketball jersey). it was very long overall, so I cut the front shorter than the back. then I just did a zig-zag stitch to give it a semi-finished look that also keeps the fabric from fraying. I did the same to the sleeves to keep it uniform. the jeans are a "slim" uniqlo cut, and I tapered them below the knee. this made them fit throughout the whole leg, but they are much more comfortable than the "skinny" cut because they still have the higher rise and wider seat. it's almost like a very subtle drop-crotch. I'm really happy with the jeans and think I might taper slim cuts rather than buying skinny from now on.

/r/sewing is a helpful subreddit, but it's a lot of quilts, baby clothes, and womens clothing. I would love to start a male sewing/alterations subreddit if a few people would contribute.

seems like something you'd find on malefashionadvice

I don't find it particularly fashionable in the sense that well fitting basics don't have seasonality or any sense of zeitgeist-based inspiration.

you can wear this, any day of the week, any time and look good - don't get me wrong - your outfit is fine. it's not fashion, though

I wondered whether it was just my understanding of the term but wiki paraphrases a book by Susan Kaiser for an apt description:

>Fashion is a popular aesthetic expression in a certain time and context, especially in clothing, footwear, lifestyle, accessories, makeup, hairstyle and body proportions.

I'm missing the "in a certain time and context" element. This fit could be part of something as early as the 60s as well as the mids 2010s. Not even because it is a style that comes back in relapses, but because it doesn't seem to change or care about the times it's in.

I haven't started to make my own clothes, but I have taken some in which improve the fit tremendously. I plan on making some pants and I've found the resources below that have been recommended to me either here on reddit by the r/tailor or r/sewing sub and have purchased the books but haven't had time to test out my skills.

See my response here. My recommendations would be pretty lengthy considering my endeavors that focuses on psychotherapy than more classical psychoanalysis. It would require many, many accompanying books and papers.

Search For The Real Self: Unmasking The Personality Disorders Of Our Age– James F. Masterson (considering his graceful abilities to be well-written, I would suggest all of his other works, if you can)

Drive, Ego, Object, And Self: A Synthesis For Clinical Work– Fred Pine

Freud and Beyond: A History of Modern Psychoanalytic Thought – Stephen A. Mitchell

This should give you a pretty good foundation. You may need to do supplemental research.

these are good alternatives. they're american military parachute boots from ww2 I believe, don't take my word on it.

Love the simplicity of your fit, looks like something vince staples would wear.

I just finished reading the book "Ametora: How Japan Saved American Style" Link

Also watched "Dior and I" for the second time the other day. It's on netflix, pretty good.

u/Tricky_Ricky_O · 0 pointsr/malefashion

I haven't finished it, but I got a copy of Ametora from my sister, and I really like it. It sheds light on the role of Japanese fashion in the world today, which I think is quite interesting.

u/gabbidonji · 6 pointsr/malefashion

I would recommend them. I really like how they stack and they're pretty cheap on Amazon. I can't vouch for how they hold up in the long term though.

Thanks! I love that jacket so much I have a 2nd one in army green.

I got it off Amazon years ago from a Chinese manufacturer. The build quality on the inner lining was crap and ripped to shreds in no time, but a tailor made it perfect.

When I go to my order history it doesn't take me to the right jacket anymore (I guess they stopped making it) but this is the closest one I could find.

clay at the part and in front to keep my hair straight (the front is actually a little curly/wavy, blow drying helps a lot with this).

To give it extra hold and shine on top either gel or if I want it to look greasier american crew.

In terms of laundering, consider using dryer sheets. Ultimately you'll need a lint remover for spot cleaning. I have an italian mastiff and a white cat. The mastiff's hair weaves into fabric and I've had success with the dryer sheets. Try this too: https://www.amazon.com/Evercare-Magik-Brush-Double-Pic-Up/dp/B071YSCWBD/ref=pd_cp_121_1?pd_rd_w=2qDP9&pf_rd_p=ef4dc990-a9ca-4945-ae0b-f8d549198ed6&pf_rd_r=ZFE3W6PR0M5FWPBA0QH6&pd_rd_r=2051a632-7453-11e9-8ad6-676656a66066&pd_rd_wg=0gbf7&pd_rd_i=B071YSCWBD&psc=1&refRID=ZFE3W6PR0M5FWPBA0QH6
