I think it's mutual mate although ikuto's more reserved personality i.e. he puts chiyuki on a pedestal and chiyuki being the more mature (mindset) will end up as the first to realize her feelings and give it a proper name

> Ikuto once again being the beacon of hope shining through the endless fog in Chiyuki's future.

I am delighted people are giving ikuto credit for helping chiyuki pick herself up when she'd feeling down but it goes both way a lot of ikuto's current success/growth is as a result of chiyuki in a direct/indirect manner and he gives her due credit

I made me feeling on her clear in the reply to your comment on the thread of previous chapter, I will quote parts of it me self to save people's time

> just as ikuto saved chiyuki, he was saved indirectly (this time) by chiyuki (and directly in the past. The problem is because the manga is focusing more on ikuto people seem to forget his original opportunity came as a result of chiyuki's inquisitiveness and drive. She created the situation that led ikuto to her father, who led him to yanagida, followed by kokoro, ayano and other. She opened up an entire world for him that he didn't have a shot at from outside on his own

> coincidence...luck is opportunity + preparation, ikuto was talented, had spent a lifetime making clothes so much so he plans it all out in his head but his talent would have gone unnoticed if chiyuki hadn't come into his life like a hurricane

ikuto's right about her being like the wind (of change/reassurance), chiyuki's best attributes is her personality...she is an inspiration to regular people (like that editor for the magazine) which is often overlooked by people who are too set in their with how the fashion industry works and reject her because her height. She'd be successful in any other field that doesn't require her to be tall because she's got all the qualities people value in the professional world - looks, extroversion, grit, confidence (and a healthy amount of narcissm) for ex. she'd kill it as presenter or a youtuber who earn a lot in the era of social media, fuck she'd kill it in a lot of fields

sure ikuto will get more screen time/page space (?), because he has more growth potential because chiyuki is an insider and more or less realized as a model (skills) with only her height holding her back

I've known about this for a a few days now. I looked but can't find any previous announcement about it. If someone has posted it, please let me know. Other than that, I fucking love this series and the mangaka Pochii Iida! I already have volume 1 and 2 in Japanese. Being able to support an english license is awesome!

For those not following the series, it is about a young orphan named Yuu who happens to meet a Lovecraftian demon named Shub-Niggurath, the "Black Goat of the Woods with a Thousand Young," who offers to fulfill one wish of his. He asks her to be his big sister. The thing to note about this series is that the mangaka based it on a series of hentai doujin he created a few years ago. The storyline is the same, but more mainstream with only limited fanservice. It is pretty cute, but hints at darker things constantly. I really love the aesthetic that he has created. He is also continuing to release new doujin of the series as well, which is the first time I have ever heard of a mangaka simultaneously releasing a mainstream manga and a related doujin concurrently.

Here it is on Amazon if anyone wants to preorder.

Some things I feel like mentioning:

The Sword Art Online volume that comes out this month is the manga. The first light novel volume comes out next month. I think I won't get the manga but I will definitely buy the light novel volumes.

The first 3 volumes of Phoenix by Osamu Tezuka are currently available digitally and the 4th volume comes out next week (March 11). You can get it directly from Vizmanga, Amazon Kindle, iBookstore, Nook, and Google Play.

You can buy a Shonen Jump subscription on Rightstuf ($26) and get a free year of their Got Anime Membership.

I noticed most volumes of Attack on Titan are currently around $6-$7 on amazon so it is worth checking it out if you are interested in buying the series. Worth noting that if you don't mind waiting the Attack on Titan Colossal Edition 1 comes out in May and contains the first 5 volumes of the series.

Deadman Wonderland volume 1 which came out last month is still $6 on amazon.

Lucifer and the Biscuit Hammer Vol. 1-2 is currently available for preorder comes out in November. I also noticed Noragami, Kokoro Connect, and Ubel Blat are available for preorder (on amazon at least).

---

This week I had around 8 volumes preordered but I had to cancel most of them. I plan to buy them in the future during a sale. (Really wanted Nijigahara Holograph....waited so long for it...it was even delayed...but I have been spending too much on manga recently so :/ )

Haganai volume 6 just arrived and it seems next volume the manga finally reaches the 2nd season of the anime. Nisekoi volume 2 should get here tomorrow (currently around $6.30 on amazon). Psyren volume 15 has not shipped yet...no idea why (currently $5 on amazon).

Those are my orders for this week. I really can't wait for the Gundam volume at the end of this month.

---

From last month's releases I only remember getting Toradora 6, Dragon Ball Full Color Edition 1, Strike Witches 1, Deadman Wonderland and I think that was it....I did kinda go crazy and spend a bit on some stuff released long ago like Great Teacher Onizuka and Gintama. If anyone is interested on the size of the Dragon Ball color edition volume I can take some pictures next to a regular One Piece volume.

Long post xD

I was gonna say Frederik L. Schodt's: Manga! Manga! but you beat me too it. (although as all_my_fish said it might be a bit hard to find it.)

Manga: 60 Years of Japanese Comics and Dreamland Japan aren't too shabby in terms of information on manga (although again you will have to find them first.)

Also A Drifting Life by Yoshihiro Tatsumi is an autobiographic manga about the gekiga movement that took place withing manga (and talks about the history of manga to a certain extent. (It is also a pretty well done manga in and of itself)).

I wish I could help find you some better non-book sources.

Your essay seems ok so far.

Here is a couple of lines from Schodt's book that you might could use:

>The word manga (pronounced "mahngah") can mean caricature, cartoon, comic strip, comic book, or animation. Coined by the Japanese woodblock- print artist Hokusai in 1814, it uses the Chinese ideograms [I don't know how to type these sorry] man ("involuntary" or "in spite of oneself") and [another one chinese character] ga ("picture"). Hokusai was evidently trying to describe something like "whimsical sketches." But it is interesting to note that the first ideogram has a secondary meaning of "morally corrupt." The term manga did not come into popular usage until the beginning of this century. Before that, cartoons were called Toba-e or "Toba pictures," after an 11th-century artist; giga, or "playful pictures"; kyoga, or "crazy pictures"; and, in the late 19th century, ponchi-e, or "Punch pictures," after the British magizine. In addition to manga one also hears today the word gekiga or "drama pictures" to describe the more serious, realistic story-comics. Some Japanese, however, simply adopt an English word to describe their favorite reading matter: komikkusu.

(from page 18 of Manga! Manga!)

there you go a source you can use and quote and make your teacher happy (maybe).

The original SAO LN in Japan is way past the anime. (A good 2 seasons or so.) In English, it's been published up to the end of the first season with the first arc of the second season coming out on the 15th. (Phantom Bullet) The anime adapts through to volume 8.

The SAO: Progressive series is a re-write of the first arc and hasn't been adapted beyond a single chapter. It's a really good read for those that are interested in what SAO should originally have been. The manga version of it is a silly adaption where it tells the story from another character's perspective while focusing on comedy.

Not sure about other kinds of LNs he might like considering it's hard to get an accurate sense of taste just from the series listed. Going based off the genres, Danmachi is a really enjoyable growth adventure action series I consistently look forward to the next volume of.

A Certain Magical Index is a series I love as the story is always becoming more and more exciting with some of the best writing from an author out of many light novels. The English publication isn't past the anime yet but the anime does butcher some of the arcs so it's worth it to start from the beginning. A companion to this series would be the A Certain Scientific Railgun manga which is also very action orientated.

Tate no Yuusha is an LN series without an anime adaption that got licensed in English. It's a pretty good adventure series that he might like. It's a safe bet for something he's probably not experienced yet I think. Only 2 volumes published in English so far.

I just picked up Vinland Saga. It's the first Manga I've picked up since high school, so the first I've read in 6+ years. It's amazing. If you like vikings, ultra-violence, feats of badassdom, and a good story to go with it, I highly recommend.

u/Octorockandroll · 15 pointsr/manga

Great idea. One Piece isn't the world's best selling manga for nothing.

I recommend using the manga box sets for your read through. They come in stylish boxes that are easy to organize, have a few extras like bonus manga and posters and stuff and gives you 23 volumes at a time for cheap.

There are tons these days. It's a real popular format. Some stuff I'd recommend:

The Amazon listing has some info. It contains Used Record, Shiver (whose name was used for the collection as a whole), Fashion Model, Hanging Blimp, Painter, The Long Dream, Honored Ancestors, Greased, and apparently an entirely new story called Fashion Model: Cursed Frame. After each story there's also a short author's commentary section talking about what inspired the story.

u/pathhh · 3 pointsr/manga

I got these ones off amazon

Manga fits pretty well on them. Heres some top down pics

[1] [2]

As far as spacing shelves,I started at the bottom with my biggest volumes (Viz Signatures/Omnibuses/Viz Big's) and then worked my way up.

Just by eyesight I'd assume you could fit 5 rows of all standard size manga, or 4 rows and a little left over the way I set it up.

<Me and the Devil Blues> has a black protagonist, not sure if it's been licensed though. Afro Samurai is a pretty good anime if she's willing to try that out (I don't think anyone's translated the manga). I'd have to get back to you on the college manga, cos all I can think of are high school ones. I think FMA is a really safe bet though, definitely give her that.

I think the popular buys nowadays are Tokyo Ghoul and Attack on Titan though, if you want to try those. Oh, and if she's going to Ireland, The Ancient Magus' Bride takes a lot of mythology from around that area (like Gaelic and Anglo-Saxon).

u/Amauri14 · 4 pointsr/manga

We are safe! Tomo-chan is back! By the way if you are in the US don't forget to buy the hiatus bringers volumes 1 & 2 once they are released.

I just hope that this means that there is an upcoming anime announcement coming soon.

u/Ryzza36 · 1 pointr/manga

It's always expensive here in Australia unfortunately, matey potatey. $14 is actually on the cheaper end of the scale to be honest.

I know of a site that you can use to compare prices for books, and I looked up Tokyo Ghoul for you, and the $14-16 range is looking like your best bet for new.

If you're willing to try Amazon, it's here for $3 apparently, but that's not including shipping.

You might be able to find a eBook, they could be cheaper.

And if you don't care about physically collecting it, and...y'know, technically committing a 'crime', you could always just read the scanlations on MangaDex. Don't worry, you won't be arrested. We all do it here.

Manga are about the size of dvds so I have been using this media case I found online. It's pretty solid and holds like 230 manga. https://www.amazon.com/Sauder-Multimedia-Storage-Cinnamon-Cherry/dp/B002RRH23W/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1483829670&sr=8-3&keywords=Media+case

u/Razor0310 · 2 pointsr/manga

That's the first edition, and while not a lot is different between the two I definitely recommend getting the second edition as it comes with the CD and prices for the first edition individual CDs are criminal. The workbook and answerkey also help.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Genki-Second-Edition-Integrated-Elementary/dp/4789014401/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1411588323&sr=8-1&keywords=genki

I also have some social anxiety, but I think what helps me is that I have a teacher I can talk about my interests with easily. I had a teacher closer to when I started learning and the lessons weren't nearly as enjoyable and I'd try to look for excuses to cancel them. Now I look forward to them and don't feel nearly as nervous about making mistakes (which happen often, my speaking is pretty bad).

u/rusticks · 3 pointsr/manga

Black Edition volumes feature larger, better quality pages compared to the normal volumes. There are many pages you can compare to the normal volumes that the coloring looks better.

The All-in-One Edition is the entire series in a single book. As you can expect, the book is massive.

When I search on Google the 4th link I get is this: https://www.amazon.com/Metamorphosis-Osamu-Tezuka-Manga-Complete/dp/406108688X

Probably since I don't live in the US I don't get the same results other people get...So please, don't be a moron too like the other people!

u/TheCureToCancerIs · 1 pointr/manga

Going to jump on this to say don't just buy Uzumaki. Gyo and Tomie are both just as great and also contained in one volume.

u/calico197 · 2 pointsr/manga

I think it's in Shiver: Junji Ito Selected Stories. Luckily it's been published in English. Link on amazon here.

The original work, in this case the Light Novel was adapted to manga.

Volume 1 for the Light Novel

Volume 1 for the Manga

u/KingOfOddities · 1 pointr/manga

you also have this, which is a better bargain
but if you're just buy to collect, then both the box set or the black edition seem fine to me.

u/philsayshi · 1 pointr/manga

yeah you could get the 3 in 1's but i prefer the big collection it saves a fair amount of money

u/Siopaobun · 1 pointr/manga

The boxsets typically depend on which online site you get them from but you can buy them from amazon or right stuf. I'm going to link the amazon ones so check them out.

u/pitman · 1 pointr/manga

It's already up for preorder FYI.

u/tetsuyaa · 1 pointr/manga

Nice haul, but if you want to learn Japanese, buy This book instead

Edit: use the mangas as a reference, not as a learning tool

u/haxdal · 5 pointsr/manga

Honestly I don't understand much written japanese but I've been self studying using the internet and I have signed up for beginners japanese classes in my university next semester (they use Genki which I plan on buying this month and start early) and I have also been listening to the Pimsleur Japanese I lessons (and of course copious amounts of Anime).

u/BL4ZE_ · 3 pointsr/manga

@ 6.69 per volume for one piece, anyone knows if there's a cheaper alternative somewhere online? If not I think I'll buy 1-23 from amazon @ 116 (http://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/1421560747) and the rest from rightstuf (free shipping in Canada on orders over 250)

u/wickedseraph · 1 pointr/manga

I'd suggest getting Shiver, which has an assortment of his one-shot stories.

u/fearisnotanoption · 5 pointsr/manga

To be honest, the book box sets are a better value for your dollar. The Omnibus volumes tend to have thinner, shittier paper so the volumes aren't as thick but it means that the overall quality is lessened. The only problem with the box sets is you have to wait for all the volumes to be available before you can purchase the set so you will be always behind for collection purposes. Also <100$ for ~25 volumes is a price you won't likely get even with the omnibus.

They are! I'm from the UK and got this off amazon. Currently the first two box sets are only £85. The second one was £130 only a couple of weeks ago. I snatched this up as soon as I noticed the price drop.
