Not sure I can explain it in a single comment, but instead I'd recommend you to keep this book for weekend reading The Mixing Engineer's Handbook

I've tried plugging in a 3.5mm to 1/4 cord into the Line in but it doesn't pick anything up on the hardware even though there's music playing. I've tried it with phone and computer. Do I need a different type of cord? This is the one I have currently: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01JY2D98Y/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Steinberg UR22 - Can sample whatever I (hear) live into Maschine. You know, play a Youtube video and you can hear it over your speakers/headphones and hit the sample button and do it live. That was the main reason I bought it: I use it on Windows 10/64

so does the software load completely or does it grey out before you get into it? it could be a routing issue, you shouldn't have to even select controller but Im on the older version.

Explain more about greyed out? on the pads or the software screen goes grey?
how old is your macbook? it does require a powered usb but i think apples done that for a while.

i use something similar to this, but I'm running an interface and keyboard too.

I have a few of these:

http://www.amazon.com/ORICO-Charging-Adapter-Windows-H10C1-U3/dp/B00HSHN82K

One switch for three ports, so you can turn a few items on/off at the same time. Works fine for Maschine, Push, and some Novation toys.

I've been looking for the same for my surface pro and MK3. This is what I have on my wishlist: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B073YM372C

Use this for your Maschine, keep your laptop on a table nearby or something, and clamp it onto a double-braced Keyboard stand like this.

I can tell you what I use -

https://www.amazon.com/Pelican-1495-Laptop-Case-Black/dp/B000KIDBO4/ref=sr_1_4?crid=U2TW0TKB07VA&keywords=pelican+laptop+case&qid=1565828258&s=gateway&sprefix=pelican+lapt%2Caps%2C152&sr=8-4

This holds my MacBook Pro, my MKII, power adapter USB cable and an iPadPro 12.9

You could back your car over this and still boot your gear.

Yup. This is the cable I use: Hosa STP-202 1/4 inch TRS to Dual 1/4 inch TS Insert Cable, 6.6 feet https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000068O1O/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_o-8Rzb68G64Z6

Nah man just buy adapters. They have all kinds, a 1/8 to 1/4 adapter plugs on the end of your cord.

Example. There are tons to choose from and should only be ~$5

I own an MK3, as far as my knowledge goes, there are no built in speakers so investing in speakers wouldn't be a terrible idea. Regarding the cord to sample directly from your phone, I purchased This cord.
