The negotiation course I took at business school was awesome. It was based around a technique called "getting to yes", which sounds contrived and bullshitty but which tries to find positive aspects of a negotiation that the two sides are looking at.

For example, you may want more money, but do you only want more money? That may be a total showstopper for the other guy due to hard budget limits, so maybe there's other forms of compensation (training, holidays, etc.) that are more valuable to you, where the other guy can give.

Similarly, the whole thing focused on the phrase "where does that number come from"? Basically trying to find out why there is a limit. And if you can identify that (e.g. HR policy, my boss says so), then try to engage your negotiation counterpart in a constructive approach to changing that number. For example, let me help you convince your boss that I am worth more. Let's figure out what I can deliver to make you more comfortable - an evaluation period, salary contingent on clear, objectively measurable goals, that kind of thing.

You must also learn to understand what your value is, in a close to objective manner. For example, figuring out what similar jobs pay elsewhere, what you have contributed, what value you have added, etc. This is unfortunately something a lot of women in business do not do nearly enough, and is part of Sheryl Sandberg's whole point about being more assertive (it does not make you a bitch to be assertive in a civil manner about your value and your place in an organization). This is something where you can keep in mind "hey, please understand that what you are offering me is not fair value based on this, this, and this evidence." Part of this is also being willing to insist that anything you negotiate be measurable and put on paper (i.e. no vague horseshit promises of "we'll discuss that in the future").

Lastly, there's a ton of nifty little psychological tricks - for example, never feel compelled to fill silences, never feel pressure to set an "anchor" sum around which a negotiation will revolve, remain calm.

Does that help for a start?

Not sure about that, but in the meantime, if you want to start learning the script, I can recommend this book: https://www.amazon.com/Arabic-Script-Hacking-learning-alphabet/dp/1473679699

I got it from a friend who didnt want her copy, just to give it a try, and it is brilliant. If you want you could smash it out in a weekend and end up with a good ability to sound out Arabic words, even if you don't understand them. I have used it to impress and make friends with the owners of the local middle eastern grocery :)

I did the opposite (Perth - Melbourne). First up, it's easy. The roads all the way are busy, and there's no "middle of nowhere" where your life might be in any kind of danger if you break down etc.

It takes ages. It's one thing to know Australia is super big, it's another thing to drive across the island. But it's beautiful, too. I was grateful that I wasn't going to have to turn around and come back any time soon when I arrived, though.

If you are in a super hurry, you can do it 4 full days of driving. With two rotating drivers, and a bit of risk (don't drive at night unless you really have to, your odds of hitting something and damaging your car are not insignificant), you can do it in about three days.

If you're in a rush, Drive Melbourne to Adelaide on day one. Ceduna day two. Noresman day three, Arrive in Perth at the end of day 4. I took 5 days, but I stayed a night on the Nullabor and had a leisurely time of it. If you aren't in a hurry, and haven't seen the Great Ocean Road, take that road. So beautiful.

Other than that, the trip is pretty straight-forward. Treat your drive like you would a day at work. Stop for lunch, have a few little breaks. Maybe work back a little. You'll do fine.

Take something to listen to. I had Audiobooks. As a suggestion if you haven't already read it: Ready Player One by Ernest Cline. If you're new to Audible, you should be able to download it for free. Read by Wil Wheaton, about a far-too-possible future for Humanity/Internet/Second Life kind of thing. Full of 80's pop culture.

Read this book: http://www.amazon.com/Millionaire-Fastlane-Wealth-Lifetime-ebook/dp/B004BDOUAI/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1380613408&sr=8-1&keywords=millionaire+fastlane

Then this one: http://www.amazon.com/4-Hour-Work-Week-Anywhere-ebook/dp/B006X0M2TS/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1380613398&sr=8-1&keywords=four+hour+work+week

Don't be put off by the titles. These are both excellent books. By this point you're going to struggle to ever want to get a job xD. These books are great overviews that give you a solid mindset shift in what's possible and what's required.

Once you've done that, resources like Mixergy, Smart Passive Income, etc will give you a lot of ideas for different approaches (there are heaps more, find the best and listen to what's relevant to you).

Break what you want to do into sections. You'll need to get clients, sell them the idea, have them pay you and be able to deliver the product. So figure out what you need to do to achieve each of those objectives.

Wow, slow down, cowboy. I was pointing out what tagging represents in the graffiti world. You're the one who brought up its value and effects on society, not I. I defined the issue, not critiqued it. Talk about going in circles. Not terribly big on comprehension are we?

> So from this old photo you've shared I'm sure that at lease some of these taggers are now fully fledged, respected artists?

Funny you mention that. In the Richmond subway photo, the yellow tag in bottom-left region is NEW from AFP and DMA who is now, indeed a "well-respected" artist who is commissioned to paint walls throughout Europe, creates pieces with paper/collage and metal sculpture. Many others in this photo and elsewhere have been well documented in a book about Melbourne graffiti called Kings Way, giving well-deserved attention to a world not seen or known my many Melbournians for some decades.

This topic creates a lot of tension for you, doesn't it? I'd suggest not letting teenage memories of having the shit kicked out of you by kids in Wu tang tracksuits affect your better judgement. The manure mural sounds exciting, but probably more up the alley of Arts Victoria. Don't forget to wash your hands.

Glad you're feeling better. And no, helping yourself feel better is not a crime in my books although I am a big wuss and wouldn't try anything without a doctor's script.

Oh, I thought these might help you. [Cool gel eye mask] (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002OSWW3O/ref=s9_al_bw_g121_i1) and cool sticky sheets. The sticky sheets is on sale at woolies. I wish I could go buy some. And crank up the aircon in the middle of winter.

What no one in this thread suggested, which is legal for you to carry and is almost as effective as pepper spray, is a tactical flashlight, in order of increasing price: this or this or this

You can also get a cheaper one online, but I recommend quality if you are relying on it for self defense. Make sure it is at least 200 lumens, preferably 300+ if you want to temporarily blind an attacker. You can then use the distraction created by the blinding light to strike them on the head or other bones such as collar bone, and then run away. You could also take the opportunity to kick them in the knee or balls to allow you time to escape. It takes very little skill to use effectively and it isn't seen as a weapon in most places, so you have a good excuse to be carrying it.

I haven't read it but I hear a lot of good things about 'The Ancient Art of Stoic Joy'.

I mainly read the classics by guys like Marcus Aurelius and Seneca, but I'm sure there are easier digestible stuff out now.

Maybe ask in /r/stoicism.

  1. Your link is not a proof that Huawei sends your data to China. Actually, there are no proofs for that, only accusations from US without any real evidence (that looks like an instrument in trade war).
  2. But that's a good thing not to trust hardware that you don't have admin access to and that is probably not well maintained - I doubt that anyone installs firmware updates for your router, so there could be some security vulnerabilities unpatched.
  3. So, you can treat your WiFi as a public network. And the cheapest solution for safe communications on a public network will be VPN connection. Buy WiFi access point with VPN support (I can recommend GL.iNet, one of the cheapest is 30 dollars, and it's 2-minute setup to setup WiFi access point that will use your unsecure WiFi as an uplink and enable VPN. Or if you are a geek you can take RPi and set it up).
  4. Your provider always has the access to all your unencrypted traffic (and store metadata of that traffic for some years), nothing suspicious about that. As long as you use VPN (or at least transferring sensitive data only over HTTPS and your phone/laptop does not have any malware) - provider cannot snoop into your data.

I buy all my shoes from Amazon. If you know your shoe size well, especially specific manufacturers, then you can save lots. Mark Nason by Sketchers make great dress shoes. I got these for USD$53, so about $80 and there is always a good deal to be found.

I see saw in and out of this emotion, some times it just feels like I'm too far behind in my ability to razz, like having gone to a single sex school for all of my high school years has just set me back too far.

Recently clicked that keeping this mindset will never get me anywhere, would highly recommend this book https://www.amazon.com/Find-Your-Happy-Daily-Mantras/dp/1452523665
it has helped me kick start into having a more positive mindset.

A damp towel over a fan will dry out in no time in this weather even indoors

What I did years ago when I didn't have AC in Uni was to freeze my wet towels and hang them infront of my fan

Also these stuff feel glorious http://www.amazon.com/Cold-Therapy-Cooling-Bandana-Scarf/dp/B004XX4XA8, just a damp towel around your neck can help cool your body temperature

Super interesting.

There is a stupid mark up on zippos here. Buy from America where they are priced sensibly.

This is the best Zippo you can buy. Just the plain, brushed chrome, standard Zippo is the original and classiest. They all come with a lifetime warranty so the price doesn't really affect quality so much, just material it's made from. If you want to spend an extra few bucks for something special you could look for a solid brass one. I suggest buying one with a brushed finish because they age better. I would also suggest not getting one which is engraved or has decals on. Decals get scratched and come off, engravings aren't for everybody.

Yup, the driver is a jerk, but I don't want to spoil the tale for you :) is for kids though, but very fun! http://www.amazon.com/The-Driver-Wanted-Other-Stories/dp/1592641059

Well the direct upgrade from yours, the Beats Solo2, are supposed to be good if you like that Beats sound, but if you don't like the comfort of on-ears you could look into the Sony MDR-1A, say. I hear they're bassy and are over-ear headphones. Pop into somewhere like Addicted to Audio or Jaben and ask to try a few things out. Music is a very personal thing and other folk recommending things only goes so far.

EDIT: Also I have a pair of as-new Sennheiser HD598CS I was planning on getting around to selling at some point if those float your boat. Prob had about 20hrs of use at my desk, full retail packaging etc etc. PM me if you're interested.

u/Electronic_Owl · 1 pointr/melbourne

Have been planning a bit of de-cluttering and was going to sell some stuff. Just found out that a book I thought I might get $30 for is a lot rarer and more valuable than that - $250+ for a used copy.

If anyone is interested in the early Melbourne graffiti scene you might be aware of it.

I used to have Tootle growing up, the little train that like to jump off the tracks.
