  • I got a medic's bag ($7) to hang over my shoulder for items I will keep. I needed a sturdy bag. Some items might be heavy or pointy.
  • I pack a plastic grocery bag for trash.
  • Plastic toothbrush, for cleaning items.
  • Fiskar's garden tool ($8). Plastic shovels don't work well in gravelly or hard-packed soil. Or get a metal shovel.
  • Water bottle. I might end up wandering far away from parking.
  • Try a Bounty Hunter Tracker IV for $60-100. It's what I have. It's quite sensitive. It works great, it simply doesn't have all the bells and whistles. From Kellyco with accessories, $125. From Amazon for $95.
  • I like the Garrett Pinpointer because the closer you get to the metal object the faster it beeps and vibrates.
  • A lighted loupe for seeing dates on coins is really handy. 40x is too powerful I learned, 10-20x is better.

Welcome to the hobby! I started last Christmas myself. You may have one but as I can't see it on the picture I would thoroughly recommend getting a pointer such as one of these https://www.amazon.com/Garrett-Pro-Pointer-II-Pinpointer/dp/B015GCEW0A makes it so much easier.

Enjoy!

Let me add some opinion as well. I've been using an Ace 350 and an AT Pro for a year, but under 400 I would definitely recommend the Ace 400 which is the AT Pro minus the waterproof aspect. Get something with a digital readout, it makes everything a lot easier. That's just the Garrett side of things, a colleague uses a Fisher F22 and it's a hell of a machine, especially for the price. The only reason I went with an AT Pro over something else was that I love detecting in water and the AT Pro is the only waterproof detector that is reasonably priced for beginners.

It's your coin so do whatever you like.
If you want to clean dug coins there is a special pen w/ replaceable fiberglass rods insert made for jewelry cleaning. They work really good.

Hahahaha. That's awesome of you.

Recommend buying new, yeah? [I can just get this one on amazon?] (https://www.amazon.com/Garrett-AT-Pro-Metal-Detector/dp/B006J61ZKS)

Also - is a pinpoint detector important?

I use these rechargeables in mine without any issues.

They last a good while too. Pretty good investment.

I use to have metal ones that looked like actual revolver hand guns. They also didn't have the orange plastic ends. They used paper caps instead of the rings. https://www.amazon.com/Toysmith-Wild-West-Metal-Cap/dp/B003SN51IW

They looked like the above link but, with paper roll caps.

This was 25 years ago! Still glad to see they're still made.

Look into this guy too: Teknetiks Eurotek Pro. Around $200 and supposed to be a little better than the F2. But I agree with the other post, get yourself a Garret ProPointer. It will make detecting 100% more fun.

Its a 12 volt manual battery charger. An automatic one won't work as it has to sense the battery or it will stop charging. I use thus one but any manual charger will work.

washing soda is a little different chemically but I've gotten the same results with plain old baking soda and its more readily available to me.

Good luck and let me know how it goes.

I'm very new to this, and I'd like something midrange. My budget is anything under $80 and I'm in the Bay Area, so I'll probably be on beaches. I'd like to find coinage(not many relics out here), but some chance of detecting larger stuff would be cool.

I was thinking of this one: https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B01E54NMGK/ref=cm_cr_arp_mb_bdcrb_top?ie=UTF8

$8 Precious Metals Testing Kit I bought one a while back and it comes in pretty handy. Several YouTube vids on how to use.

You'll be fine. Just use Duracell 9v, until you know that you are going to stick with it. Then get some rechargeables. These got great reviews http://www.amazon.com/Tenergy-Charger-250mah-Rechargeable-Batteries/dp/B0045WGWCE/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1369755443&sr=8-2&keywords=sanyo+eneloop+9v

At that point you will want a Garrett Propointer too!

Requiring 9Vs is a drawback, but not a dealbreaker. I think he is referring to having to pay $40 for decent 9v rechargeable batteries.

There are several good detectors that use 9volts.

San Diego, CA. In the busy summer months I've found arriving around sunset works great. It's much easier to find parking and your the first one to find the days treasures in the prime spots.

I use a Princeton Tec Remix Headlamp which defaults to red light but has a bright white when you need it. Red helps preserve your night vision to maintain situational awareness. I also carry a can of pepper spray just in case of weirdos. I've only had to pull out the spray once, and the guy was to stoned or drunk to really be a threat. He just headed towards me like a moth to a flame...

Edit: spelling

You could use a bilge pump like this one (as long as you can get a vehicle close to the well and are willing to buy a piece of tubing - it connects to your car battery). There are also manual versions also that look like a bicycle pump. Counting on you OP!

I always carry my weed whacker in my truck along with my gear. It has a lithium battery and can clear a nice chuck to hunt on.

Specifically, this one

u/CanineGrool · 2 pointsr/metaldetecting

These ones are the best all rounders. The other bigger ear muff ones in the cheap range sometimes have issues with the cord not stretching out enough and pulling the phones off your head or sound quality issues. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00OJY9GEY/
