Coming from someone who is a big nerd but doesn't like to be a walking billboard I love a lot of the modern merchandise that doesn't shout my interests at you.
This site is one I like to look through as a result. It's a bit pricier but frankly I like their simple stuff the best. The shirts with a fox on them being a good example.
I'm not as familiar with it but this site looks to have a little potential.
But you said "fun", which can be a little tough to identify.
Here is an amazon search for metal gear stuff under clothing/etc. I actually bought some patches from there that I really liked. Let me make my own "metal gear" gear. I remember them being slightly cheaper though.
There are also some items on there that may help give you ideas.
You can also look at some other categories here.
There are also some decent posters though you may need to do some digging. The games I played the most are MGS3,4, PW, and GZ. These are all newer. However despite that I've always been a huge fan of the hand drawn art that they did for MGS1 and MGS2. I felt like there is a lot less made for the games that followed. Example being this. You may have better luck getting an idea from amazon then searching the web for something better quality. Actually the art on this subreddit's banner is another good example, along with the one by the search bar.
Also there is definitely a MGS version of Risk .
Last you might find some good stuff on Etsy. It's a good place to look for things that a company wouldn't have bothered manufacturing but some crazy in an apt decided to start making.
But since MGS has a large and dedicated player base there is some really nice stuff in there.
Like this thing.
Lastly if you want to be a lunatic there is the Shock Knife and Stress Knife reminiscent of the electric knife in MGS4 but designed for training in knife fighting.
Oh and I also wanted to mention the playing MGS thing. I don't know what games you like and etc but to me the most important thing is letting a person find what they like about a series rather than demanding they like it a certain way. Don't worry about "doing them in order". If MGS1 is a bit unconventional for you (due to controls or etc) then don't be afraid to play newer games first. I really do love the series but I am not likely to ever completely play through MGS: Portable Ops. Instead what I will do is watch a story playthrough (they don't talk over cutscenes and give a "tour") on the uKnighted Twitch channel. Past broadcasts get recorded and they just did a marathon. So I know its in there. Heck I enjoy it for watching games I already played. They know how to find all the secret jokes, easter eggs, and conversations.
Aaaanyway good luck.
The Kojima Code was a good read. I believe it covers up to MGS 3 or 4 only, but the history on the original MGS is great.

There’s also novelizations of MGS 1 and 2 written by Raymond Benson which are a little cheesy, but still a fun read.
https://www.amazon.com/s?k=metal+gear+solid+benson&ref=is_s
My favorite’s the novelization of MGS4 by Project Itoh. That’s a very, very good read. Highly recommend.

Oh, probably Play Arts Kai, yeah (those are the better ones from what I've heard), but there may be others. I saw some relatively inexpensive ($20 or so, depending on the character) boxed figures, but they got horrible reviews for being cheaply made and falling apart.
If he doesn't want Ray, then maybe he might like Metal Gear Zeke? Compared to Rex, Ray and Sahelanthropus, Zeke is a bit basic, but if he liked Peacewalker, he might think it's cool.
I suppose I could just list off a few things I, as a Metal Gear fan, would personally like, and you can look through them and see if anything would fit his interests.

The prices probably vary between Amazon and so forth, but the Yamaguchi figures seem to be decent quality, more variety and less expensive than the Play Arts figures.
Not too sure about WWII model kits, I've seen some of the beginner ones at michaels that seem easy enough.
My recommendation is that if you're looking for simple, do some googling for some models that appeal to you, but keep a look out for part count, paint/glue not needed, etc.
If you're looking to start, no glue/no paint snap kits are the way to go.
Gundam Models range from relatively easy to just a long list of complex parts. They all come with fairly clear instructions though.
BANDAI produces good ones, but definitely research before purchasing as sometimes, an entire line still in production may have problems like some size mismatching or parts being too thin and breaking when assembling, but that is a given to happen to any company producing models in mass production.
If you're looking for something elementary-middle school grade with minimal painting/effort
This is a good place to start:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Speed-Racer-Mach-V-Polar-Lights-Model-Kit-6807-/311529870274?hash=item4888a093c2:g:j9gAAOSwoydWnmMo
You don't technically need paint unless you want to add the red for the seats/interior for anime correctness.
You might need super glue for some parts just to keep them in place while assembling but its really not a big deal.
It comes with screws (I think, i only built one and I fudged the decals and paint job so I just finished it and tada in the box xD), parts, and the decals.
From what I could tell, this one on forum and review talk is also fairly simple:
http://www.amazon.com/Bandai-Hobby-Beargguy-Action-Figure/dp/B00FKL699U/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1454114358&sr=8-2&keywords=bearguy
I bought the big boss psp off of ebay pretty much to play acid and acid 2. I haven't tried acid 2 yet but the gameplay of acid is a lot of fun. I think the lack of a canon storyline leaves me a bit uninterested in the plot so the talking between missions seems to drag on sometimes but the actual gameplay is fun. I like the references to past mg games through the cards. It would be awesome if they made another game like it.
I can't remember specifically how many issues, but both MGS and MGS2 got comic versions.
They stick to the script but add a little bit here and there, especially to 2, and are pretty cool. They use the same artist from Peace Walker.
Metal Gear Solid Omnibus https://www.amazon.ca/dp/1684052122/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_20U2CbXER1FS6
That's all the issues put together in one book for pretty cheap.
Sure thing!
Unfortunately there is nothing for Snake Eater :-/
This operation will be extremely delicious and usefull for all the MGSVTPP players... XD
The Dollar's Trilogy, whitch I've watched million of times obviously, was also remastered recently so there's no better moment to start this mission: http://www.amazon.com/Name-Trilogy-Fistful-Dollars-Blu-ray/dp/B003EYEF2S
Why don't add "Once Upon a Time in the West" in the list? ;) http://www.amazon.com/Once-Upon-Time-West-Blu-ray/dp/B00AEFYS8G/ref=pd_cp_mov_3/186-6500619-6917147
The last one I don't remember if I've already seen it before (reminds me of the motorcycle scene from TPP trailer) I'll check...
Dude smoothies are the way to go! I got in waaaaay better shape when I started using them for meals. I hate a LOT of veggies and I found a green smoothie recipe (spinach, almonds, bananas, almond milk, chocolate protein powder) that let me get all my leafy greens in.
Also check out the Yonanas machine. It's kind of like smoothie ice cream, but it tastes amazing. It's like my favorite dessert now and it's healthy as hell for you. I've had it for dinner many times lol.
I started with a 1:100 Messerchmitt by Tamiya. http://www.amazon.com/Tamiya-61604-Messerschmitt-ME262A-ME163B/dp/B00061HHL8
It's a pretty good build with isn't very difficult and was fun to build, 10$ for it is a good price, though you will need to get colors and brushes and stuff.
>Does this refer to the original Wisemen's committee formulated before WWII? And if so, are the Patriots funding Philanthropy by using the name of one of their original dead members as a proxy?
Here's the thing, I'm uncertain who Kojima intended for the Patriots to be at the time of its release. The Colonel had this to say:
>To begin with -- we're not what you'd call -- human. Over the past two hundred years -- A kind of consciousness formed layer by layer in the crucible of the White House. It's not unlike the way life started in the oceans four billion years ago. The White House was our primordial soup, a base of evolution --We are formless. We are the very discipline and morality that Americans invoke so often. How can anyone hope to eliminate us? As long as this nation exists, so will we.
I find this description fascinating. To anyone who has watched the Ghost in the Shell anime, it very much resembles the way the Puppet Master artificial intelligence came to life as a collective construct of information on the internet. Except in this sense, The Patriots are more of "Memetic Collective Conscious" of American culture--so to say--that achieved self-awareness.
In my opinion, who they were originally was irrelevant upon the game's completion. To expand further upon the Ghost in the Shell analogy, it was like Stand Alone Complex's Laughing Man incident. Who was the original Laughing Man? It doesn't matter. His memetic persona evolved and took on a life of its own. It'd be as useless as trying to deduce "Anonymous's" identity. The Patriots weren't individuals in the sense that the Colonel offered. They were the "discharge" in democracy that Kojima described in the Grand Game Plan.
This leads me to my other point. When the game named its "founders" as "The Wisemen's Committee," [this book] (http://www.amazon.com/The-Wise-Men-Friends-World/dp/1476728828/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1398120542&sr=8-1&keywords=The+Wisemen) came to mind. It seems like a stretch, but Kojima is also more well read than many of his fans or detractors realize. It also seems a little bit too coincidental that Olga adopted the alternate monicker of "Mr. X" under her Cyborg Ninja guise, when one of the more prominent "Wisemen" (George F. Kennan) wrote an influential article with the same pseudonym. Most of these chief figures, by the way, shaped the policies that made America what it is today.
And one other thing, about the Patriots being dead, these policies aren't just limited to "Wisemen." Some would say, as the Postmodernists do, that we've been heading in this direction for a long time beginning with the European Enlightenment. Apparently, Kojima wants to do a video game about "The Boss (The Joy)." It wouldn't surprise me if he revealed that different iterations of The Philosophers existed way before WWII.
You can pretty much get the most set from this amazon link hope this helps! Metal Gear Solid Iron on Patch COSPLAY Set Foxhound, FOX, XOF, Diamond Dogs, Outer Heaven, MSF https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00WA93LU0/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_XUnBzb9FJXM9W
There are two Raymond Benson novels (MGS1, MGS2) then there's the one by Project Itoh for MGS4 (which I heard is really good).
There's also an artbook by Ashley Wood. Then there is the Metal Gear Solid Omnibus which is the comic series of MGS1 and MGS2 by a few writers with Ashley Wood's art. There's also the Deluxe Collection but it's pricey and I'm not exactly sure what makes it different from the Omnibus.
I think any Metal Gear Solid fan who doesn't own these would definitely appreciate them. I know I would.
Got this neat wall scroll from amazon based on the MGS3 painting seen in the church in MGS4. I was pretty suprised by how huge this thing is, it's not really the best quality out there, but it's pretty good for $11.
I've noticed something odd about the release date of Ground Zeroes in the UK and just wondering if anyone can shed some light on the situation.
So Wikipedia and the Konami site list the EU release as 20/03/14 however places like Amazon, Zavvi and Grainger Games state it's due for release 21/03/14.
Does anyone know why this is or if it is just an error?
Edit: Should mention I have tweeted Kojima, Amazon and Zavvi. Will update this post if they tweet back.
Edit #2: Just a quick update, /u/KungFuPenguin101 has received an email from Zavvi asking for proof of the release date. He has provided a screen cap of the Official Konami page. Will update with any further correspondence.
Edit #3: Amazon.co.uk has responded with the following:
"I've checked your order and can see that the "Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes (PS4)" is on pre-order and isn’t due to be released until March 21, 2014.
Please note that the release date is subject to change. If we’re informed of any changes to this date, we’ll update the website accordingly.
I've checked your link and please be informed that this disc is available on March 20, 2014 in Japan & Europe only.
We’ll receive this item from our suppliers in time for the release date. If your order contains multiple items and this title is holding up your order, we’ll dispatch your order at this time. On the date of dispatch, we'll send you an e-mail confirming the date, contents and method of delivery. As per our standard policy, we don’t charge you for an order until the time of dispatch.
We hope to see you again soon."
It looks like Amazon considers the UK to be outside of the EU. I've replied asking for their reasoning behind this.
Yes. There are a few other games like Portable Ops, and Metal Gear 1 and 2 (Not Metal Gear Solid 1 and 2, Metal Gear 1 and 2, the ones for the MSX2 console). But it's not 100% vital you play those and besides they aren't made for the PS3 or PS4. And you'll need a PS2 to play
Getting the Metal Gear Solid HD collection for PS3 gets you everything except MGS4.
Amazon just updated the article for MGSV including a note about the bonus DLC and Map, are we near something?!

Here you go. You couldn't find it if you typed in something like "art of mgsv", you had to write something like "art of metal gear" instead, I presume that's why you couldn't see it.
There are only going to be 400 of these, so I wanted to make sure this subreddit got the link: https://www.amazon.com/Art-Metal-Gear-Solid-Limited/dp/1506702678/ref=as_li_ss_tl?_encoding=UTF8&qid=1466331896&sr=8-1&linkCode=ll1&tag=metgeainf-20&linkId=b355d0039657ec981253678058b585b3
Here is the amazon script I just whipped up - http://hastebin.com/exenilimiv.vhdl
You have to use it in conjunction with this page http://www.amazon.com/Metal-Gear-Solid-Phantom-Pain-PlayStation/dp/B00JKM06HG/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1425649248&sr=8-1&keywords=phantom+pain

legacy of snake versionThe Legacy Collection
It's only $26 on Amazon now. It also comes with digital codes to get MGS1 and VR Missions.
And MGS V is only $16 on PS3 for the Day One version or $25 for PS4.
On that same note, Metal Gear Rising is less than $10, Ground Zeroes is less than $10 on PS3 and less than $17 on PS4.
Basically you can have the entire Metal Gear saga on PS3 for only about $60, the price of one* brand new game.
Amazon sells them for $40
