I currently have mine setup to boot into the NES Classic firmware, and have had it setup to boot into the Shonen Jump firmware. I found it really easy, and here are the steps (as best as I can remember) to do it.
Sorry if this is kind of long, but I wanted to be as precise as possible to the steps that I used to get mine working.
These are the things that I used,
USB adapter www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07FY9Z9GD
Thumb Drive www.amazon.com/SanDisk-Ultra-Transfer-Speeds-SDCZ48-064G-UAM46/dp/B00KYK2ABI (I know that this one is overkill for what I do, and that I don't need USB3 but it is the best one that I have tried)
Hakchi2-CE https://github.com/pathartl/Hakchi2-CE/releases I use the 3.5.3 version, which is the most recent as of writing this.
That should be everything that is needed to get it working.
I would like to shout out u/PattonPlays for he has great tutorials on how to do a lot of hacking of the Nintendo Classic systems. I wish I had found him before I started hacking my system. Here is his YouTube channel as well https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCO91Nlt9y8svZF8VjEKpkmQ there are great videos on there, and even though some of his hacking videos are older, he seems to be updating them
Pat,
Order Number: #20837 here. I've been trying to reach you unsuccessfully since April 19th. Please reply.

Original e-mails:

Pat,
Thank you for getting back to me, these did arrive shortly after your email. I am experiencing some issues though. I wasn't able to get one of them working so I removed it and tried the other with some success. I'm able to see the expanded storage and use it some of the time, but more often than not the system will lock up not allowing anything to be done with it. Is this an issue you've run into at all?
I'm going to try the other one on a different system but if that won't work can I send this back for a replacement?
Thank you for your time.

You:

Yeah I apologize, this is something that happens with some cards. I've dumped at least 40 hours into this issue and as far as I can tell it's only an issue with larger cards, especially SDXC cards. I've determined that there's something wrong with the way Hakchi2 prepares the system for SD compatibility. I've been in close talks with the devs and have supplied them with hardware so they can test. They are able to replicate the issue, so it's really a matter of time until we find a solution.
Since you've confirmed you're having the same issue, can I ask when you purchased your system? I'm having a hard time nailing down which systems are affected, whether it's a certain release line or across the board.
Once a solution comes out I will be sending a message to anyone who has bought a Super Storage and notify them to update to the latest version of Hakchi2.
Thank you!

Pat,
This system was just recently purchased. As for the other board, I did install it into another SNES classic and it acts the same as the first. It will flicker a bit but eventually go dark. I did swap the SD board and both are fine, is there any way I can send this back to get a replacement/refund? While one does partially work and as you've stated, is being worked on to overcome the issues you're having, I may not be able to use the other one since it was for a friend.
FYI this is the SDHC card I purchased. It was the smallest one I could find that was a decent price:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B073K14CVB/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
So on one hand, I agree with ponlork about NOT deleting the games or games_cache folders within hakchi, as there are .desktop and .json files hakchi depends on to display your library properly. You would think deleting it wouldn't do anything because it was empty when you first unpacked hakchi, but trust me ... it matters. (found out the hard way once.)
On the other hand I agree with JW_Pepper_Sheriff about the time involved. I use the drive linked below, and it only takes 45-50 minutes to upload my entire collection of 1,111 games which total about 96GB or so. (Got to leave room for those save states.)
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07D7PDLXC/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o06_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Not that anyone asked, but IMHO the SNESc is the ultimate classic system! Nintendo gets some credit for the unit itself and the front-end, but it is of course due in large part to coders like KMFDManic, DantheMan and so so many others. Testers and tutorial creators like PattonPlays & ETA Prime should get a huge shout out too.
Grab an OTG usb adapter and a small 16gb usb drive ( though 8 gbs should honestly suffice, unless you're going to go haywire and add everything you can to it).
I currently have a total of 524 games on mine, for NES, SNES, Sega Genesis and Arcade games, which is all I'm currently interested in. I've only used up 2.5gbs and that is with the save states also being saved on the usb host, as opposed to the NAND memory on the console.

This is what mine looks like btw. I've shared these links before.
USB host pic 1
USB host pic 2

Works like a charm, though some people had issues working with theirs. Not sure if their USB drives are drawing too much power to work properly, or if the OTG hub is not functioning well.

I bought mine on Amazon and actually bought the two pack, just to be sure I would receive the correct right angle unit. 2 for 7.99 wasn't a bad deal. :\^]
Amazon: Right angle micro USB host with USB power
Amazon: SanDisk Cruzer Fit low profile 16gb USB drive
Alright your instructions are great and were followed to a T. This was also my understanding and that's why I am at my wits end with this because I did everything just as you stated and have double and triple checked things. I also installed a boot splash in the root folder and installed the boot splash mod to test it out and it has never seen that either.

The OTG adapter again is the same one patton is using in the videos on his youtube channel:OTG: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00LTHBCNM/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
and
the USB stick I'm using is a 64gb sandisk from the approved list online here:USB: Sandisk64GBSDCZ33-064GYES - u/Negativitee------------
The NES boots with the OTG cable connected and you see the USB drive flash so it is getting power. I've tried all three ports on the OTG and same result. The folder structure matches my last flash and is not seeing what is on the USB drive.
It should be pretty simple to ensure the information is pulling from the drive. Why is this so difficult for hakchi?
It should be as simple as a dropdown or checkbox. :USB ACTIONS-Format USB-Store games on USB-Store cores on USB
etc... This needs to be added to the program*

How does one ensure they are wiping their system and filling up the USB drive?
It really seems like this program wasn't designed for this and further development is needed to add it to some menu somewhere. There is nothing I can check or verify in the gui to make sure things are in place for this to work. I noticed some older tutorials tell people to hold shift while syncing and the words change on the sync button to "sync to USB" and this does not happen with my system. The words don't change and although the program has no problem seeing and exporting to my drive it does not link up whatever is needed to actually work.
Is there something to look for in the hakchi2 folder where the file structure is stored for the program? Can I add a file to a folder manually? Or is there a workaround for this?

This does work to just load games onto and play. I have success using it on both the SNESC and the NESC now. Unless that is what caused my SNESC to become unhackable via the current Hakchi methods after a few days. I do want to say thank you though because of your product and video I was able to finally do some hardware modifications for the first time. It was fun and I want to do more :)
Honestly at this point I want to figure out what happened so that others don't by accidentally do it. Even when stock kernel is on the SNESC now it will hang on shut down and need the power taken off it.
My original SNES controllers are stored away, but I compared my SN30 to the controllers that came with my SNES Mini. The D-Pad feels a little bit clickier on the SN30, but that's about it. Overall responsiveness is more than satisfactory.
For a 3rd party controller, they're excellent. They certainly beat out these pieces of shit.
OTG Adapters for the NES/SNES Classic:
Inateck:
https://www.rakuten.com/shop/inateck/product/HB3001G/
https://www.walmart.com/ip/Inateck-3-Port-USB-2-0-OTG-Hub-Adapter-Cable-SD-Card-Reader-for-Smartphone/602986265
https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B00OCBXIY8?tag=echo10-20
Note: Only the USB 2.0 version is compatible with the NES/SNES Classic out of the box. You would need an adapter for the USB-C version to connect to the NESC/SNESC, and whether it actually would work is currently unknown.
Also, be aware that it uses its own power cable instead of the NES/SNES Classic's USB cable, and it is very short (roughly 12-14 inches long).Consider getting an extension USB cable or using an extension cord.
TUSITA ("octopus" style): https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B00LTHBCNM?tag=echo10-20
This one has been reported as working for many people, but can also reportedly break easily.
Simpler OTGs:
https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B07FY9Z9GD?tag=echo10-20
https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B00JCZ2FQQ?tag=echo10-20
OTGs like these have only one port for USB. A simple choice if you only want to use USB and not wifi...or vice versa.
We do not recommend the small angled adapter featured on snesclassicmods.com and elsewhere. It looks great, but easily loses data connection at the slightest nudge.
Here are a few options:
USB Sticks ----> List of Compatible USB Devices for USB Host Mod
Also if you want to get Netplay: TP-Link TL-WN725N
It's the recommended Wifi adapter.
I have all these and they work great. Started out with the small one, but had to get more ports so I could add more controllers and wifi for netplay.
Also, it's best to put Hakchi on the thumb drive itself. It keeps everything self-contained. When adding games use "export" instead of syncing. Make sure "linked" is checked.
*Edit for link
Thanks so much for all your great work an incountless dedicated hours, Kyland God!!!
Everything is working here with no exceptions (played multiple games for hours):
Firstly I did a Kernel reset as seen in one of your last videos https://youtu.be/f1dYzSn480A
Keep on going!!
Hey Patton, sorry I just noticed this post was removed by the automod.
If you want to post Amazon links the best way is to follow the guide titled "Posting Amazon Links on Reddit" here: https://www.reddit.com/r/miniSNESmods/wiki/faq#wiki_miscellaneous
Basically strip the url down to just this
https://www.amzn.com/B076B995TL
That should be allowed by the automod and prevent it from removing them.
Cheers!
I had some problems using two of them, but someone suggested moving the receivers away from each other so I did that with a cable extender and haven't had any problems since. If you need the analog sticks and don't mind wired, the iNnext classic controller is also a great option at <$20. It has a more comfortable grip than the 8bitdo pro controllers. If you don't need the analog sticks a standard 8bitdo controller is really really tough to beat.
https://www.amazon.com/iNNEXT-Classic-Controller-Nintendo-Console/dp/B0754266CT
First off the controller you linked is a third party controller, not official nintendo. From what i've heard and read here is that 3rd party knockoffs don't work on the snes mini.
For the USB hub, i only use the angled otg adapter so I don't know about the hubs from experience. But the one always mentioned here as the best by others is from Inateck: https://www.amazon.com/Inateck-Adapter-Compact-Compatible-Smartphones/dp/B00OCBXIY8
Seconded. I recommend this OTG cable over the Innateck hub many people use due to durability issues.
https://www.amazon.com/ANRANK-MO2001AK-Samsung-Phones-Tablets/dp/B07PCPWYQR
Most people seem to recommend the Innateck, and its easy to see the advantages, the primary being extra controller ports.
https://www.amazon.com/Inateck-Adapter-Compact-Compatible-Smartphones/dp/B00OCBXIY8
I use a SanDisc Cruiser Glide 64gb thumb drive. I keep a backup copy of my Hakchi folder along side the exported data so I can make changes where ever I take my NESC. It can take hours to export, be warned!
Thank you so much. That was extremely useful. I picked up 3 of these. Two for me and my boyfriend and extra in case one doesn't work, and two of these USBS. They will not be here until Thursday so I have a bit of a wait. In the mean time should I restore my SNES to factory settings in preparation?
That is excellent news! One other question: does the hub you use need an external power source? I saw someone recommend this:
Fun-Home Left Angle USB 2.0 Micro Male to USB Female Host OTG Adapter for SamSung i9100 i9300 With Power Features https://www.amazon.com/dp/B013ENUF0Y/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_YzM8Ab8RNMKTK
I have a small USB hub I could plug into it, would it get enough power to the controllers, do you think?
FYI I'm using this, https://www.amazon.com/Inateck-Adapter-Compact-Compatible-Smartphones/dp/B00OCBXIY8
Any known issues with connections? It seemed to be the best rated around here.
You mean something like this?
8Bitdo Retro Receiver for SNES Classic, SFC Classic and NES Classic (Bluetooth) - Super NES; https://www.amazon.com/dp/B076B995TL/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_0IS9BbEJ57QVZ
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00LTHBCNM
I use this and it works great. It's been recommended by others too.
Quality control on those octopus ones seems to be lacking and too much guesswork about ones that work and ones that don't. I even supposedly had a "good one" that I only used for a couple weeks that failed. I just got this one and will have to try out soon: https://www.amazon.com/Inateck-Adapter-Compact-Compatible-Smartphones/dp/B00OCBXIY8/ref=pd_sim_107_5?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=B00OCBXIY8&pd_rd_r=RD9N0FYKBDWYT0ANX8NW&pd_rd_w=kmANp&pd_rd_wg=3Elfm&psc=1&refRID=RD9N0FYKBDWYT0ANX8NW
I'm hoping it will prove to be a reliable option for folks who want multiple inputs.
I haven't seen complaining on the right angled one so that likely is a good option for those not needing additional inputs.
Whatever you are syncing in Hakchi will show up on the USB. If you synced on the NAND first, they will look the same.
I usually use USB to do 99% of playing, BUT I setup my machine to have a slightly different set of games when USB is not plugged in. To do this I made a copy of my HakchiCE install. In the second install I removed most of the games I have for the USB version, and sync straight to the machine.
The reason I have two is for the very rare occasions I want to play with more than 2 players. I can plug in my OTG and use it to add more controllers, and because I don't have the USB dongle plugged in, it means I can play 5-player Bomberman.
So, my NAND-only install just has a series of 4/5 player games setup to play through Retroarch (they are all usually setup to play through Canoe on the USB install).
Sorry for the long explanation, but thought it might answer any secondary questions you had. CUSTOMISATION IS KING
This is the one I use:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B013ENUF0Y/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Works great

Thanks. Would something like this work?

Try a different adapter for flash drive, I have this exact style and works great

There are two ways:
I just use USB Host, although I recommend against the OTG devices they have in that tutorial. I currently use this one by Inateck and recently switched from a 32 GB USB drive to a 256 GB mini SD card. A word of warning about the Inateck adapter: you have to use its power cord instead of the USB cord that comes with the mini, and it's significantly shorter.
And the system automatically detected the joystick, or you still had to map it?
I'm using the 8Bitdo Retro Receiver which lets my connect via bluetooth to my PS4 controller. But it's not detecting my joysticks!
EDIT: Yup - just had to manually set my controller directions to the proper mapping :)

This is the best and fastest adapter you can buy.
Also I haven’t seen anyone use that flash drive before... idk might be the adapter or the flash drive since you claim you are doing everything right on the console and stuff
Would this be a good otg adapter if I wanted to increase my space for stuff like ps1 games? :P

It seems to be the same and it could not help but mine comes from there: https://www.amazon.fr/gp/product/B00OB2R47K and works well too. ;)
Update: I bought this one. And now everything works fine. cable fit perfect. no interruption. https://www.amazon.com/Inateck-Adapter-Compact-Compatible-Smartphones/dp/B00OCBXIY8/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1540901742&sr=8-3&keywords=usb+hub+otg
Wow, thank you so much for the info!
I checked if it exists on Amazon.fr and found this one, looks identical but it's not the same brand, I think I'll try anyway.
Is it a lot bigger than "octopus" OTG?
I use this adapter with a old 8GB Toshiba usb Drive

There are similar adapters in stock, but you need to make sure it’s the correct angle
Thanks. I have been poking around and another redditor mentioned this one (similar) so I may use this one -

Looks like a bot that responds to "am I wrong?" The answer to your question is you need this: https://www.amazon.com/8Bitdo-Retro-Receiver-Classic-Bluetooth-nintendo/dp/B076B995TL/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=8bitdo+bluetooth+adapter+snes+classic&qid=1556909090&s=gateway&sr=8-1
I use the 8bitdo retro receiver with an SN30 Pro. I don't notice any obvious lag or interference issues, but I'm not a speed runner or high-performance gamer. Battery life is okay - usually lasts about 4-8 hours, though I've never tried just pushing the controller till it died.
In hindsight, I wish I'd gone with the regular SN30. The extra niceties of the Pro model are okay, but they mess with the grip a bit since the controller is larger, and I find that I prefer other controllers for playing modern games on other consoles or PC. I got the SN30 Pro for nostalgia, so I wish I'd gone all the way and gotten a traditional one.
Yes.

This one
Appreciate you taking the time to test those for me, at least if you have other people come forward to you now with the issue you'll know it's OTG related and can advise accordingly.
I'm going to look into getting a new OTG device and post my results back here, tempted to try this one:

Don't bother with those octopus style adapters, they're cheap garbage. I've had 3 fail on me. Either 1 or more of the ports don't work, or they're slow at reading.
I bought one of these https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B00Y1092WM?psc=1&ref=yo_pop_mb_pd and works great. Looks like they're out of stock at the moment, but Inateck also has one.

I’m doing this and every time I boot up it looks like a stock snes.

You going to have to buy an adapter to be able to plug in a USB stick. You'll need something like this https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07FY9Z9GD/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_hFZXDbRH6D6AC
I had trouble finding the Inatek for a decent price, so went with this one instead and it works great:
https://www.amazon.ca/Adaptor-TUSITA-Charging-Adapter-Raspberry/dp/B00LTHBCNM
I ended up gluing mine down to a piece of plastic to try and mitigate the fragile wire issue that’s known with these octopus-style adapters.
I just saw the product link you posted, I have the Bluetooth model with the retro receiver.
SFC30 https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00Y0LUQFE/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_YvqFAbVVYPHTN
Retro Receiver https://www.amazon.com/dp/B076B995TL/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_axqFAbD0MBFJC
Of note I got the SFC30 for easier use for my kids (push the Green button) but again the parts are swappable with official controllers if you want to keep the purple scheme, or just buy the Bluetooth SN30.
this is the one i use. it has 3 usb ports so you can plug in a USB Host drive, keyboard and mouse

Another one i see recommended here is this:

I do agree with you that it is weird.
However, it is not that the flash drive doesn't work, because I'm able to play the games (hence, reading data is not a problem, apparently). When I try to go to the home menu, that's when the problem appears. So it might be that the the flash drive is unable to write data and that this problem comes from the adapter (since I test it with two different flash drives and it has the same behaviour with each one).
I also noticed that one of the usb ports of the adapter seems to not recognize the flash drive.
I'm using the Inateck Hub which a lot o people praise. It was working ok, but again, I stopped using it for months and something must have happen in that time.
This is the one I use: https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B00OB2R47K/ref=mp_s_a_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1520858452&sr=8-6&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_FMwebp_QL65&keywords=otg+usb+hub
Works fine with the usb mod and additional usb controllers.
Got mine on Amazon. https://www.amazon.com/Fun-Home-Female-Adapter-SamSung-Features/dp/B013ENUF0Y/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1522294860&sr=8-3&keywords=left+angle+usb+otg

I got this one
The SNES Classic is very picky on what OTG cables will work with it. I personally would not trust something for 35 cents. I got this one and it hasn't failed me yet.

Don't think this will work on either the Wii or WiiU though. In my experience, the remotes cannot fully power the adapter to the degree that they are supplied power by the Classic Mini line.
It's a passthrough, so the USB power cable just plugs into the other half.
Ive checked all the cores for the games, as well as my Retroarch, with no issues there. I am having an issue where hakshi is saying my console is taking too long to reboot. It could also be my OTG connecter (im using This one) which has been mentioned in later comments
I have tried three USB drives and three OTG, and have had no luck getting USB-HOST to work. I tried both FAT32 and NTFS. Both H2CE and Hakchi-gui methods.
I get the Hakchi loading screen, and my thumb drives light up, but I never see any of the games I loaded onto the USB drives, only the original 21.
Any ideas of where I could be going wrong? Or did I really get unlucky with all these devices?
For the record, I tried an "L" OTG and two Y-cable OTG's. The thumb drives were a no-name 4GB, a Kingston 8GB "DataTraveler Locker", and a PNY 64GB model P-FD64GATT4-GE.
It's those generic octopus adapters. I have had 3 in total and they all just quit working but still able to power on the device. It's bad solder jobs on the boards or just cheap boards altogether, or both. I ordered one of these and not had 1 single problem for almost a year now!
my first experiences with external storage were really bad too. I had blackscreens, crashes and was send back to menu a lot. All this was causes by the subpar OTG connector i used ( it was one of these )
Once i switched to the Inateck OTG HUB it has been rocksolid.
Of course that's just my experience and your problems might be rooted elsewhere.
Thanks! I was looking at that one but the negative reviews were making me hesitant.
Would this one work too?
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00OCBXIY8/
I would highly recommend one of these...
https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00OB2R47K
and one of these
https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00BWFYBPC
Together they let you use the cable that came with the mini, but doesn't leave extra weight hanging, since it'll sit on the table as well.
I'd also say, do NOT buy - https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B016KNKRYY (The octopus cables mentioned by viral_dna)
They are rubbish! I've gone through two, one was DOA, and the second died a few days later.
