OMG I am. Thank you. That's so sweet. I live in SF Bay, and it's just been a hellscape of smoke, and feels like we missed the chance to save our planet. =( But I am 100% super duper. But I am always impressed precisely *why* Moby Dick is still the most important American novel, because it laid the foundation for everything we are dealing with... capitalism, power, money, corruption, self-interest and entitlement, as well as oil, immigration, and everything else we're still dealing with. This isn't even an original thought.... this guy covers it brilliantly!

But thanks... not the right subreddit to come to with nihilism. Or wait... maybe it is. lol

You're sweet, and thanks.

In terms of which copy to read and understand the text and context, I'd definitely agree. The third edition came out in 2017 so it's also a quite recent update. Look for the one with Ahab on the cover, not Queequeg (actually Tupai Cupa, the Maori chief he was modeled after).

The rest are mostly unannotated, include not much more than a foreword/afterword (if any), and are mostly of interest for the illustrations.

Oh, but is! I'm just having trouble getting Amazon to link the two pages. Every day contains a new lesson.

Here's the Kindle version: https://www.amazon.com/Moonborn-Moby-Dick-D-F-Lovett-ebook/dp/B01M17L0VH

Thank you so much for your interest!

I'm a fan of the Longman critical edition:

That was my "primary" reading text when I first read it, and I supplemented w the notes from the Norton (which I found occasionally helpful but not as good on the whole... Didn't make much use of the essays, tho, just the notes).

I also picked up a secondhand copy of Charles Feidelson's edition. It's kinda hard to find, and notes are on the interpretive side, not just factual, which turns some people off, but I really liked it.
