Hammer being that it looks like it has the weight of a hammer. The best curveballs do this at high velocity. I think Yellow Hammer is from John Bagonzi book. Essentially, there is a bird that glides fast and when it sees a tasty bug it dives hard and eats it, so it falls like a hammer. The bird is yellow, so named Yellow Hammer.
In this book, the author claims that even thought Pete only bet on his team to win, it was known that he did that. So, when Pete didn't bet, he influenced the odds. That is a big deal. I am a huge fan of Pete and he should not be in the Hall.
