I've been looking at getting into MTB as well, and don't yet have a board, but see you haven't received much in the ways of a response. From everything I've read on forums, MBS are a really good brand and the Atom is a good entry level setup. If/when I do get into MTB, the Atom will be my first board, unless I decide to go a little better and go one step up with the MBS Colt 90X or MBS Core 94:

They make boards that are kinda like mountainboards (huge inflatable wheels), but way lighter, with smoother tires, that might be what you're looking for.
Here is something you might want to check out, I can't speak to their quality though.
