I found out about Neurodiversity from the intro to Deaf Gain: Raising the Stakes for Human Diversity and it made complete sense.

Honestly, I was bit surprised to find out that the word "Neurodiversity" was coined in 2007. But I'm happy to see that it's helping more minorities assert themselves.

OP, you're not the only one doing work. See Biocultures Manifesto. There has already been a lot of legwork done with dialogue and thinkings. There's Intersectionality. You should read stuff in other fields (queer studies, feminism, deaf studies, and so on).

Your experience is very similar to that of so many other autistic women I know. The masking, a.k.a. pretending to be normal at great personal cost, is nearly universal. As you say, that may or may not mean you "have autism" in a strict diagnostic sense, but you certainly seem to be neurodivergent at least. Welcome to the tribe, as it were.

Book recommendation: Women from another planet.

(Disclaimer: I'm not a woman.)

Been There, Done That - Try This (edited by tony Atwood) might be useful. There are a couple of good books aimed at teenagers also which may or may not be helpful - freaks, geeks and Asperger syndrome by Luke Jackson and the asperkids book of (secret) social rules by Jennifer O’Toole

The other thing to consider is using trusted neurotypicals as social rules translators - no book is going to cover every situation fully or enable you to see clues that may be obvious to NTs.

This book has received a 4/5 (69 reviews) on Amazon: A Field Guide to Earthlings: An autistic/Asperger view of neurotypical behavior.

Not sure how appropriate it would be for a young adult such as yourself. Alternatively, you might want to check out your college's disability services office (if you aren't already registered) and see if they have any resources. Some schools offer peer mentoring programs and opportunities to engage with folks across the neurological spectrum.

Hey, just as a thought process for while you're trying to find help that doesn't suck... (fire your psychiatrist. Right now. HE'S FIRED. You need a new one.)

There is an actual medical study done on Saffron extract and how it worked compared to Ritalin. (Shocker, nearly identical.) https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/30741567

I've also seen studies on Saffron for depression and anxiety: https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0165032717315884

It's about $17 on Amazon. (We've been using this one with my 4 year old, with decent results. Your mileage may vary. You may find a cheaper/better one. Just letting you know what works for us. Not any kind of affiliate link or anything. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00ES0OZAE/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1 )

Now, I'm not going to say that Saffron works as well as stimulants, but stimulants were making my violent 4 year old be a hormonal emotional 4 year old instead, and this seems to mitigate that a bit for him. So while you're looking for a doctor that DOESN'T COMPLETELY SUCK (seriously, FIRE YOURS) you can maybe try the Saffron route?

Also, in my own personal experience, I discovered that when we treated my ADHD, my depression and anxiety significantly reduced, because the ADHD was what was causing my depression and anxiety. I couldn't adult properly, and I failed as adult, so I was depressed and anxious. Taking ADHD meds has reduced the other crap because I can actually adult and do more often. So you may discover that you don't need other stuff once you have the ADHD under control.

(PS: If you HAPPEN to be in Utah, I know a great psych.)
