You really only want to use balm once a week for the first year or so.

I use Honest Amish for beard balm. Shipping is prompt and a reasonable price (link goes to checkout, $15 shipping to Auckland). One tin should be enough to last ~4 months if you use it sparingly.

What you really want to spend money onon is a Boar Bristle Brush. This is the one I use. The thing about boar bristle is it will grab onto the natural oils of your beard and will help regulate the greasiness of the beard, working as a natural beard balm.

The true cause of a frizzy beard is your fingers, so stop touching your fucking beard. Every time you rub your face or play with your beard you bend the hairs and run the risk of breakage. if its out of place, brush it (It might be a good idea to carry around a small, wide toothed comb).

On a personal note, I carry around a small spray bottle of almond oil. When my face gets too rambunctuous I just give it a quick spritz and a comb and continue on my way.

This stuff is the shit. Far better than just caffeine, and mixed in the correct ratios by one of the best brands around.

Need to have Hamlet translated to truly be making progress. That's when we knew the Klingon language had truly gained worldwide acceptance.

> Jesus 3 hypos a day? Surely that's him having poor control over his diet right?

Not really poor control over his diet - it's more that he's not "feeding the insulin" he has in his system at the right rate. This usually happens if you're on a long acting insulin as it will be constantly supplying the body with insulin regardless of whether you eat or whether your body needs it. If he's late eating something, or eats the right amount of carbohydrate but it's lower-GI than he thought, it will mean the insulin drags his blood glucose down and he has a hypo.

I think some people have greater variations in insulin sensitivity - which also changes depending on the time day, exercise, sickness, medications etc. So whilst he might be struggling to match his food intake to his insulin, he could also be unlucky with how sensitive his body is to it. I know the affect of exercise on glucose levels is quite different between individuals. If he really was having 3 hypos a day then you'd have to think it was more his body's sensitivity to it and the challenge of getting his insulin profile to match his needs from a couple of injections a day. A pump would make a big difference you'd think as he could create a basal insulin delivery profile to match the natural peaks and troughs.

This is a good book on how the pancreas works: http://www.amazon.com/Think-Like-Pancreas-Practical-Insulin-Completely/dp/0738215147 I'd recommend it to anyone with Type 1 (or their family) so they can understand what's going on.

my best friend is pretty snobby about 'phones and he swears these are very good for the price.

If you're open to spending a bit more (and ordering it from Amazon), NVidia Shield TV.

Fancy Android TV box (and actual Android TV, not just regular Android in something resembling tablet mode that's been shoehorned into TV functionality), fast (really, really fast) CPU, 4K support, and you can load Kodi from the Play Store if you so desire. Has a nice, Xbox-esque controller for gaming (streaming from a PC, and built-in games), optional remote (with a microphone you can do voice searches with), Chromecast support, etc etc etc.

But yeah, that pricetag. If you're in the market for a new TV anyway, Sony will sell you one with the Android TV functionality built in, which might soften the blow a bit.

No I do not grow my own hops, however I have used plenty of them in brewing many many beers. I have used fresh hop cones a few times as well. I have also used hops from different seasons of the same plant, and I can promise you that's not where a pine flavour comes from.

Here are a couple of resources you might want to glance through if you are actually interested in different hop flavours and aromas.

There is also this great book about hops, which I am willing to lend to you if you'd truly like to read it. I have a copy sitting next to me.

This one - 'homelabs' - is alright. You can set how long before the audio alarm that the light starts brightening. There's only one colour for the gradual brightening though (but it's quite alright). I have the sound on mine set to the FM radio, to RNZ Concert, which is great (RNZ Concert only has wacky stuff around midnight).

Looks like a good read. I finished The Brotherhoods recently, which wasn't bad. (link goes to Amazon)

It tries to be pretty neutral, but the guy was riding with some pretty heavy people, so it's slanted in favour of bikers really.

Interestingly enough, when you try to visit the author's site (Authur Veno dot com) it has been compromised and tries to redirect you to a site hosting malware. I wonder if that is because he pissed someone off. That is not the link I posted above, by the way.

Let's be fair and do a like for like comparison:

https://www.amazon.com/Samsung-256GB-EVO-UHS-I-microSDXC/dp/B01JNGCWHU/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1484871306&sr=8-2&keywords=256+sd+card+evo

US$149 = NZ$207

But it doesn't ship to NZ, so add $12.50 for Youshop

Save yourself NZ$67 (when on sale in NZ and not in USA) by buying off Amazon.

RIP NZ.

'Lydia Bradey: Going Up Is Easy' non-Fiction, a gripping read. Co-written by Lydia Bradey and Laurence Fearnley. About the first woman in the world to conquer Mt Everest without oxygen (bottles). Available as an ebook: http://penguin.co.nz/books/lydia-bradey-going-up-is-easy-9780143573234

'Stim' by Kevin Berry. Fiction, absolutely hilarious, available as an ebook: https://www.amazon.com/Stim-Kevin-Berry-ebook/dp/B00FYPH9FU About an Aspergers university student just trying to get along in life. Based in Christchurch during the earthquake.

'Regan's Reach' by Mark Brewer. Available as an ebook: https://www.amazon.com/Regans-Reach-Mark-G-Brewer-ebook/dp/B00ICUVK3G My SO has read this one, and said it is one of the best science fiction books he has ever read. He's also read the sequel (Orbital Envy) and wants the movie to come out. Apparently the author can't afford to write the next one in the series until he's sold enough copies

  1. You are straight out wrong, your logic makes no sense.

  2. Excuse me for oversimplifying.

  3. Because you proposed this QE post EQ, the market values are already set. Devaluing the dollar will mean less actual value comes in. This is economic fact, creditors (anyone claiming insurance) prospoer through change of interest rates. But this is a long winded story.

  4. All other negative effects on push-pull inflation

GFC has everything to do with QE (book) and why the effects are so large.

Since we're having the argument and /r/newzealand loves a good inequality post - Britain's richest 5% gained most from quantitative easing

As has been mentioned. QE is a last resort. Not a luxury to help exporters.

Chocolate fish £0.70

Penguin History of New Zealand £24.99

Silver fern cufflinks £12.90

Those'd be my recommendations, but without knowing him better there isn't much I could give you. Cufflinks may be better swapped out for something else but do consider the chocolate fish on top of a larger gift.

Leaving aside for the moment the question of what Trump has actually done to help the victims of March 15th...

is he publicly receiving praise from a Muslim for the help he's provided to the Muslim faith going to appeal to his evangelical base? I mean, this is what specifically appeals to his evangelical base..

> It does matter if it's being sold as an effective treatment, because it isn't.

Except that the evidence seems to suggest that a placebo treatment is an effective treatment for many things. Why no one has jumped on this yet and started advertising a placebo pill, I don't know (hell, they could even use the filler pills used in the Pill - it's not like they'd need to start producing anything new). Maybe because of drug approval laws. Still, until someone does this, we need the alternative meds for their placebo effects.

Book recommendation for anyone interested in a not very sciencey look at the science.

u/maybemeat · 2 pointsr/newzealand

It doesn't really work without the book - but he basically explains nicotine addiction really well and primes you to quit cold turkey.

There is an element of repetition in the book, probably designed to 'brainwash' you out of smoking (although brainwash is the wrong word really). Some reviews of the book on Amazon might explain it better.

Nicotine replacement works too - so if patches (or gum, or e-cigs) work, then that is great.

Read Bryan Caplan's The Myth of the Rational Voter . His basic thesis is that in politics there is no incentive to change from biased/wrong beliefs. I never challenge my beliefs even if seeing them implemented could bring me great harm, because the probability that my vote is the decider is practically zero. A result of this is people supporting parties as they support sports teams.
