this has been my favorite case so far:
http://smile.amazon.com/Ringke-Absorption-Technology-Anti-Scratch-Protection/dp/B014RS5BHW/ref=sr_1_5?s=wireless&ie=UTF8&qid=1451311472&sr=1-5&keywords=nexus+5x+case
the button pressing action has been really nice--minimal resistance. the case itself is very customizable as you can use the template with any background or picture.

phone for use in my car:

best FM transmitter i've ever found, and highly reviewed via wirecutter.
i don't actually own this dash mount but man, do i want it. game changer. http://smile.amazon.com/dp/B00RDQVPTY/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_nS_ttl?_encoding=UTF8&colid=3OJFHJG4QML3E&coliid=I10BBT1M2MULXT&psc=1
this http://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B00M6QODH2?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00 and this http://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B00S8GU2OC?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s01 make a pretty sweet car charging duo. the cable isn't flimsy, it's affordable, and spec compliant.
if one would be blessed not to need an fm transmitter on their automobile, i really like this http://smile.amazon.com/dp/B00PTZEON0/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_nS_ttl?_encoding=UTF8&colid=3OJFHJG4QML3E&coliid=INI8K30WP9S4L&psc=1

finally, as you start playing around with ROMS (to improve device performance as stock is pretty buggy and not particularly bueno with respect to battery life) you'll inevitably start making backups in twrp. you'll need to. those take up a lot of space. to ameliorate that, i suggest these: http://smile.amazon.com/dp/B00ZWN64RS/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_nS_ttl?_encoding=UTF8&colid=3OJFHJG4QML3E&coliid=I1YYV3CE6VXPNB&psc=1, http://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B00YFI1EBC?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s00

oh! there's also a pleson tempered glass screen protector on amazon for the 5x. it came in last week but i still haven't had a chance to install it. cheap and very highly reviewed.

u/Redheadkitten · 4 pointsr/nexus5x

I use the Ringke Fusion Clear myself. I used the same case for my Nexus 5 (only it had teal around the sides and it works very well to protect it from minor drops, being bumped into stuff in my bag, etc... without being too bulky.

However, I prioritize customization above almost all else in my phones. I love using these cases because they're clear in the back and come with a template so you can cut out a custom image to stick in between the phone and the case so it looks like you have a custom case. They're very well done and look great, but without being as expensive as actual custom cases (and I could have a different case literally every day if I felt like it).

Like I said though, it's been keeping my phone safe since it protrudes out enough to keep the camera lens from resting on whatever surface I put it on, or the front if I set it on it's face. Plus it has a headphone jack cover to keep dust out. I'm pretty gentle with my phones, but it doesn't have a scratch on it, and my old Nexus 5 looks brand new still.

u/brycedriesenga · 3 pointsr/nexus5x

Just got a 5X myself a week or so ago.

For car chargers, I really like this one by AUKEY. Pretty good all-rounder that has USB-C and can charge your other devices as well.

I also picked up this cable combo by Anker which includes a USB-C to USB-C 2.0 and a USB-C to USB-A 3.0.

With the stock charger and the aforementioned items, I feel like I'm pretty set for charging wherever/whenever I need to.

Also, I picked up [these tempered glass screen protectors] (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01D9EMSGC/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1) which are a great price and go on very well. I even messed up installation with two tries (got a speck of dust under the second one still) and the company is sending me another pack to try again for free!

u/nicekid81 · 2 pointsr/nexus5x

This is what I'm running my N5X with:

  • Screen protector I personally prefer tempered glass protectors, they feel nice to the touch - other than that I picked this one because the cutouts are precise, and the price was somewhat reasonable (and I typically mess up the first install, so it was nice to have a 2-pack).

  • Case - offers minimal protection but that's all I'm looking for. The only things I'd say against it is that the white is more "opalescent white" - it looks really nice IMO but will not match the white N5X. It is also slick, literally to the touch. Had it for only 2 days, already dropped 3x (no dmg so far).

  • I have a card holder attached. I really liked this wallet case for my previous phone but have yet to find one with the build quality I like for the N5X. I'm just trying it out for now - the immediate downside is that it looks juvenile, the upside is that because the one I have is stretchy rubber, it does provide extra grip against my slippery case!

  • For any USB-C or USB-C-to-A cords I'd very highly recommend monoprice cables. They are tested, very highly approved and decently priced. I always go there for any extra cables I may need!
u/JEJ514 · 3 pointsr/nexus5x

Great question. I use:

Charger: Aukey CC-T8. It has worked fairly well. Charging is slow while I'm using GPS and Bluetooth, but it works. I use the USB-A to -C cable that Google gave out with their Fi Lego set last fall.

Mount: WizGear Extra Slim Universal magnetic mount. I have it stuck at an angle on the top of my gear shift. Puts the phone in a convenient spot, and is out of the way when not in use.

I put the larger of the included plates under the back cover of the phone, and it mounts great to this (and other) magnetic mounts, and does not interfere with any antennas.

Case: RhinoShield CrashGuard. I'm satisfied with the protection, and this doesn't interfere with the metal plate & magnet. (Obviously with a standard case, you can put the metal plate between the case and the phone.)

This was a great question. I'm looking forward to seeing other's responses.

u/Dawg605 · 2 pointsr/nexus5x

I have one of these and love it.

https://www.amazon.com/Spigen®-Magnetic-Holder-Neodymium-Galaxy/dp/B0109JIQ0W

It uses magnets, so you can put it in any orientation easily and quickly. The magnets are strong, so you're phone definitely won't fall off. It's also quick and easy to pop it on or off. You can either put the magnet directly on the phone or inside of a case. I recommend a case so you don't get any sticky residue on the back of your phone. It's also only 7 bucks.

u/akambience · 8 pointsr/nexus5x

It depends on what type you get. The tempered glass covers are pretty nice actually. The cheapo plastic ones, not so much. I rarely have had good experience with the play ones. I usually will spend about $10 bucks on the best tempered glass one I can find on amazon.
This is the one I have and like very much: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B014SO4PPE/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Hey, i dont have the phone yet, but im decided to buy it, but im from small european country, so my only way to buy cases / skins are from ebay or aliexpress (with long waiting, so ill purchase some accessories before phone). Judging from pictures tho, i dont think any protective case is good with OTG flash drives (example www.amzn.com/B010HWCEHM/ ), what would you recommend if i intend to use theese often? Not buying case at all, or some less protective case, which dont interfere with it? Thanks a lot

u/octobereighth · 3 pointsr/nexus5x

Depending on where you'll be traveling (i.e., depending on the temperature), you could get a magnetic phone mount that clips to your vent. Then turn the AC on - the AC will blow right at the phone!

Doubly good, since it will (hopefully) put your phone in a convenient navigation location.

I have this one and it's been great; there are tons of others on Amazon pretty cheap.

u/TheEdgeOfTheInternet · 2 pointsr/nexus5x

I've been using this TechMatte mount since March of this year.

  • I used the larger rectangular plate pictured on the linked Amazon page.
  • I have it installed inside of the back cover of my 5X.
  • I don't have a skin or case on my phone so when my phone is mounted it's direct contact between the phone's standard back cover and the mag mount.
  • Experience has been fantastic. My car has a broken strut in the front end and when I hit a bad pothole it can be quite a jolt and the mount itself will shake quite a bit. Regardless the magnetic connection holds tight and the phone doesn't budge at all.
  • I don't use NFC often, but the few times I've used Android Pay have worked flawlessly with the metal plate installed.

    EDIT:

I also just wanted to throw in as a little bit of an afterthought, after I got the magnetic car mount and installed the plate in my phone, I bought a few of these flat stick-on magnets to stick certain areas my phone tends to spend a lot of time like on the wall next to my bed. Just a little added bonus.
u/drboyfriend · 2 pointsr/nexus5x

> will be shooting a decent number of photos and videos

For this part alone I would say 5x. As a bonus, you get vanilla Android and OTA updates (incl. security).

They're currently $299/$349 on the Google Play Store and Amazon. It's a great deal, just budget in an extra $13 for a USB C to USB Standard-A cable.

u/turdbogls · 1 pointr/nexus5x

I had this one for a while. worked great for a couple years until the clamp stopped working all the time.

then I got this magnetic one and stuck the metal plate behind the back cover of my oneplus one. been working great since.

and now I have a custom one I made. I just bent a metal plate, stuck some magnets on it, covered it with felt, and it stays in my CD slot now. very flat and flush with the dash. have the metal plate behind the stock back cover of my 5x without any issues. works great with or without a case on it.

u/rbarlow1 · 4 pointsr/nexus5x

I'd go with the Diztronic cases, personally (and I do, after having tried several others). They're understated, but look good, fit well, and offer solid protection. I'm using an "ultra" right now. Not bulky at all. Regular models lack the reinforcement bumps in the corners, otherwise the same.

I have this one, it's been pretty great. No damage to the phone since getting it and it raises the phone just slightly on the front to protect the glass and enough on the back to protect the camera.

The cimo slim on Amazon look the closest. I have the black case. I also have a verus case. The cimo black is a nice matte finish no branding. However, the "bumper" is shiny black plastic prone to scratching. Hitting it with something mildly abrasive should get a matte finish too. They do have a translucent/frosted version too. I haven't seen one to tell you what I think of it. Seems like decent protection. I think the verus is nicer and offers better drop protection since it is thicker.

In case anyone wants a 16gb Used (like new) for $270 from the warehouse...

Also made it a smile link cause might as well give something to a charity!

u/el_charlie · 2 pointsr/nexus5x

You can get the 16GB model and also get a dual usb 3.0 - usb type C flash drive. I bought one from kingston and all the reviews says that works fine on the 5X and 6P.

This is the one I bought: http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B010HWCEHM/ref=mp_s_a_1_2?qid=1451313197&sr=8-2&pi=SX200_QL40&keywords=kingston+dual+c&dpPl=1&dpID=3169jdBPvQL&ref=plSrch

There's a 64GB model, too.

I do have a 32GB Nexus 5X because my Nexus 4 had 16GB. I didn't have problems with 16GB but I want to be future proof. Besides, the 12.3 MP photos are bigger now. I still have a lot of free space, even with my Titanium backups, tho.

Amazon Fire Premium Headphones work perfectly and are a good quality for the price. $15 to $20.

https://www.amazon.com/Amazon-KA416Y-Premium-Headphones/dp/B00HX0SRXW

Also, my experience tells me that if you bought some that didn't work they were probably designed for Apple products.

u/TheKingj2 · 2 pointsr/nexus5x

Yes, The Nexus 5x port is USB 2.0. You can use 2.0 cables with no issues, as they should perform equally well on the 5x. I find that since USB C is also new tech, they are marketing largely to macbooks with USB 3.1 compatible USB C ports. You might not find significant price differences between 2.0 and 3.0 cables. These Anker cables are really nice, Benson Leung approved, and not super expensive, while being 3.0 cables (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01A6F3WHG).

u/Ash_Ly · 1 pointr/nexus5x

This is the one I use:
https://amazon.com/gp/product/B015LAZ468/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o04_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
I have dropped my phone multiple times, and the screen protector and the 5x's screen have yet to break. I have dropped my phone on the corner of the phone once while running on asphalt (approximately 4 foot drop). Also my phone has fallen out of my pocket (sometimes screen first) onto hardwood and tile multiple times.

I also found this: https://amazon.com/Shield-Tempered-Protector-Lifetime-Replacement/dp/B01D9EMSGC/ref=sr_1_20?s=wireless&ie=UTF8&qid=1465954017&sr=1-20&keywords=nexus+5x+glass+screen+protector

This option gets you another screen protector for an extra $2. There are very good reviews for this option. I bought the TechFilm protector, because it was the cheapest option available when the 5x was first launched. You should be happy with either option though.

u/TheClapper · 1 pointr/nexus5x

There is a master list of Benson Leung's "blessed" chargers over at /r/nexus6p/. It looks like it hasn't been updated in since December, but it might be a good place to start.

Here is what I personally went with:

u/emouse · 1 pointr/nexus5x

I got mine about a month ago and have been using this one: http://www.amazon.com/Cimo-Matte-Flexible-Cover-Google/dp/B015EH65BQ/

So far, so good. I got this one because it's fairly minimal, there's no branding on the case and it has individual cutouts for the fingerprint sensor/camera/flash rather than the mono cutout that some cases have. I also like that it has a slight lip on the front and around the camera lens so when I put it down, it's not directly on the screen or lens.

So far I haven't dropped the phone, so I don't know how it'll hold up, but I generally put on a screen protector (switched over to a tempered glass one for the 5x) and case just for peace of mind when it comes to minor scratches from general use.

u/SpiderStratagem · 2 pointsr/nexus5x

You should be fine -- I have been using the iOrange-E ones for some time and they have been great for both charging and data transfer.

u/Likely_not_Eric · 1 pointr/nexus5x

For 3rd party I've recently found Anker (as others have pointed out) to be top notch:

Wall Charger

https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B0196JB1ZS/

Portable Battery Charger (will also need a micro USB to charge the charger)

https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B0194WDVHI/

USB 3.0 to USB C

https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B01LNAAEJ2/
https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B0119EIHTG/

USB C (won't work with the portable charger I listed)

https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B01LNA0XCU

I do get rapid charging on my USB 3.0 to USB C cables when being supplied by an appropriate adapter (that Power IQ thing Anker does ;) ), so don't be too thrown off by not going USB C to USB C.

You could try a mic that plugs into the audio jack (like THIS for example) but I think that if you get an USB OTG type C to type A cable (like THIS) you could plug in any USB mic as long as it doesn't draw too much power.

u/bastardpeaches · 2 pointsr/nexus5x

This one: Amazon but probably any mag mount with a vent clip will work. The clip part screws into the round plastic that holds the magnets. You may have to find a longer screw if you want to screw into something thicker.

I'd avoid the ones with the ball-swivel mount for this method. Those sockets or ball sections are molded in, so they'll be harder to attach to a flat surface. I didn't need the adjustability since the panavise bracket already tilts it to the correct angle, and I preferred the super low profile.

u/matttrick · 3 pointsr/nexus5x

One of those magnet/vent clip mounts for the car. Life changing to just be able to pop it on the vent with a low profile and no clip nonsense. Best part is they are dirt cheap. I have this one http://amzn.com/B0109JIQ0W
