There are some really great suggestions posted here. I'd recommend picking up Eddie Muller's, Dark City: The Lost World of Film Noir, as starting place for all things Noir. It does a great job breaking down the different types of Noir stories out there. A lot of folks get hung up on Private Eye stories and forget that there are more stories out there that fit under the Noir umbrella.

Sleeper by Ed Brubaker. Two things I love about it. 1. the story and characers are awesome. 2. there's an underclass of "super" criminals with crappy powers who get called in for a job or two here and there but can only dream of being real supervillians one day. It adds something interesting to the super-person genre.

Scalped by Jason Aaron. Seriously, one of the best comics I've ever read. Imagine Departed but on an Indian Reservation with really corrupt Chief who's basically a mob boss running a crazy lucrative Indian casino. But there's lots lots more to it than that.

These are great.

A number of them remind me of scenes from Carver: A Paris Story.

I made the movie for $5K because I'm an obsessed filmmaker and Noir was the genre I had to start my journey with. It was very cool that Michael Madsen (Reservoir Dogs, Kill Bill) liked it so much that he wanted to help it find its audience and he signed on as Executive Producer. Absolutely. Bisected and posed, her mouth sliced open in a horrible macabre grimace. Vicious crime and she was only 22yrs old. There's a terrific book on the case (link below) called "The Black Dahlia Avenger" by Steve Hodel. Highly recommended. Black Dahlia Avenger
