Not so sure it can destroy ANY light source. I would try a powerful LED flashlight:

http://www.amazon.com/SecurityIng%C2%AE-Flashlight-Extension-Rechargeable-Waterproof/dp/B00AG8ESVI/ref=sr_1_7?ie=UTF8&qid=1405308092&sr=8-7&keywords=LED+flashlight+high

I have two of these. Not huge, but LOTS of light for their size, and not very costly...no "bulbs" to shatter. The LED emitters are very robust, and pretty much indestructible. Plus, the three 18650 Lithium batteries are also the best and most reilable now available.

Baring that, how about a super bright GREEN Tactical LED Laser pointer:

http://www.amazon.com/BEAMSHOT-Tactical-Handheld-Battery-included/dp/B00AMDPUJ6/ref=pd_sim_e_3?ie=UTF8&refRID=1FHPFM239R0DV393QGZJ

This little guy is more costly, but a GREEN 532nm wavelength LED Laser is about the brightest thing you can get (multitudes of brightness beyond red lasers). This thing will go 100 meters during DAYLIGHT....and one MILE in darkness. More than enough to reach out and touch "something".

Get one or the other (or both!) and use them with Dan around to witness the effect. One of these two will put a lot of light on the "subject" at hand....

You have so many good stories on your list, I'm excited to read the ones I haven't heard of! May I also recommend a few stories? /r/nosleep was my first subreddit and I spent a long time here before making a reddit account. These are just a few off the top of my head. Not sure if this is appropriate for this post (maybe you're trying to bring attention to posts which others may not have read, some in my list were/are very popular) but these stories are just amazing imo. I don't remember enough details from each to do a good job summarizing them (it's been years for the first two), but all these stories left lasting impressions on me and I would definitely read each one again.

This book is getting on now in age but I used to read this all the time when I was little. It goes around the world so it will have stories and articles from Australasia.

It's a fascinating read even now just because it shows the difference yet similarities in cultures from around the world, and their paranormal entities. I love this sort of stuff, and hand on heart, I truly believe in ghosts.

u/wdalphin · 20 pointsr/nosleep

Hi there! I'm Wil Dalphin, I've written a number of Nosleep stories under a variety of Nom de plumes (you can find the full list here). You might know me from my works posted here, narrated on YouTube, read on the Nosleep Podcast and Chilling Tales Podcast, or copypasted in the Creepypasta wiki. You can follow me on the following social media sites:

FaceBook

Twitter

Reddit

Tumblr

Blogger

I suggest primarily the FaceBook or Twitter accounts, as those are most easily accessible for people, and you can interact with me. Some people even friend request me on my personal Facebook profile, which is fine, if you don't mind photos of my kids and the occasional rant about bad drivers or my wife's cats. We can talk about the latest season of Channel Zero or whatever James Wan movie is currently in theaters.

I've got a book of about three dozen or so of my stories from over the years available on Amazon: Don't Look Away, which is available in print and eBook format, and you can even read it for free if you have the Amazon Kindle unlimited program! It's fully illustrated by two talented artists, in a style that was a blatant nod to the Alvin Schwartz/Stephen Gammell "Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark" anthologies that so many of us loved as youths (and still do)!

I don't have a patreon account, because I've always been about just sharing the horror, but I set up a ko-fi account, so if anyone just sort of wants to ever say, "I loved your latest story, thanks for the scare!" they can tip me a cup of coffee. :)

Thank you for reading!

I've used one for years and I would wholeheartedly recommend it for most people, with a few caveats. First, if you're not comfortable with blood, keep walking. You have to empty it regularly and you can expect at least a half an ounce. Second, if you look at the insertion instructions, you have to comfortable with your vagina. Third, different companies make slightly different cups and you may need to try a few brands to get the right one. On the plus side, I'm still using one I bought in November 2011 for $26.15, so it costs about 0.50 per period. At that price, I think it would be worth even trying a couple of brands. Instead makes disposable cups for $8 on Amazon if someone wasn't sure.

Also, people are talking about boiling them. Boiling is only needed for discoloration or if there's an odor. I just wash mine in a fragrance free soap and it's fine. There is a bit of discoloration, but who cares? As for leaking, it only leaks if it's full or if you didn't get a seal. I think it's happened to me once. Just make sure there's a good seal when to insert it and check frequently until you get an idea of how often you need to empty it.

So basically, the cups have a bit of a learning curve and aren't for the squeamish, but if you're willing to do a bit of research and get used to them, I would completely recommend them. It would definitely work well with a heavier flow.

Hi everyone,

I’m J. Speziale. I have only been writing for a few months, but I have really enjoyed all of the positive feedback from the /r/nosleep community. I’m still in shock from my 2017 series award. I have a dream of one day transitioning to writing screenplays. Feel free to say hi!

I just launched a webpage, and learning how to build it.

I also got to be a part of this anthology

u/r271answers · 2 pointsr/nosleep

Oh I know lucid dreaming is more like being conscious while dreaming. Dreaming while awake is mostly what I'm talking about where you are literally basically hallucinating on top of "reality".

I've pretty much never had sleep paralysis, maybe once or twice but even then it didn't really bother me too much - like this one time I had sleep paralysis with a demon on top of me but he was hot I totally wanted him to bang me but I woke up from the sleep paralysis too soon lol I'd totally have that guys demon spawn baby. ;-)

> schizophrenia

this is probably the most overdiagnosed blanket "disease" ever invented. Even within psychiatry now there are movements to basically get this removed as even being a diagnosis. I highly recommend checking out the book Rethinking Madness by Paris Williams.

The way I figure it, if I can hallucinate a cheeseburger and it tastes good and fills me up then that's better than killing a cow for it ;-)

For me, I have much worse narcolepsy than insomnia but those two things often go somewhat hand in hand. Hallucinations are actually common with narcolepsy - even to the point of something like 7% of people diagnosed with schizophrenia being mis-diagnosed narcoleptics. If psychiatrists would just friggen do a sleep study (or hell, even a single test of any kind) before diagnosing people with schizophrenia the world would be a lot better for a lot of people especially since the drugs for schizophrenia often do the opposite of the drugs for narcolepsy.

I was really happy with the foam mattress I ordered from Amazon. Zinus and Spa Sensations are great. In fact, Amazon has a great sale right now. You only need a full-size bed now so it's even cheaper!

Howdy! I'm Manen Lyset, resident Canadian pumpkin head and author. I'm most active on Twitter, where I link my stories and post silly drawings and shoot the shit. I'm also on Facebook.

If you're interested, I have an awesome anthology entitled From the Ashes of Pompeii!

Thanks so much everyone! Right now there is a free copy of The Lucienne Twins on Kindle. If you liked it, it would be amazing if you left a rating either there or on goodreads.

There are excellent books out there that explain this phenomena. Unfortunately, I have no titles to give you, but I've definitely read a few. I think that Sagan's Demon Haunted World is one of them.

IIRC from when I read them, the scientists point out that, before aliens, people often reported seeing religious figures/demons/angels. In other cultures, they report seeing the 'commonly viewed' figures of those cultures, from religious figures, to elves, to fairies, etc. At the turn of the century and before, many respectable adults reported seeing fairies, which was why that faked fairy photograph was so widely believed.

Our brains aren't perfect machines which accurately record the world and notice every detail. We actually interpret everything we see, adding things in and ignoring things deemed inconsequential. Since we, as a culture, share similar ideas, it makes sense that we would interpret odd shapes and things have glimpsed through the cultural lenses of what we would expect to be there when something is there that's not supposed to be. Before 'little green men' were aliens, they were goblins and other creatures. From wikipedia These examples illustrate that use of little green men was already deeply engrained in English vernacular long before the flying saucer era, used for a variety of supernatural, imaginary, or mythical beings.

Also, as an Evolutionary Anthropologist, I find it very telling about the human psyche that the physiology of these supposed advanced aliens is so strikingly similar to our own, with the changes in shapes like an overdeveloped human. The first time I saw a Homo sapiens skeleton placed next to a Neanderthal skeleton, I was struck by how we must have looked like aliens to them. It's very interesting that our 'enemy' is a more advanced version of ourselves.

u/mushpuppy · 1 pointr/nosleep

This sounds like a cross between Fritz Leiber's Smoke Ghost and M. John Harrison's The Great God Pan, available in this collection.

Not a criticism at all, as those are 2 of the greatest haunting short stories ever written.

u/GasStationJack · 59 pointsr/nosleep

You have quite the appropriate username. I must warn you that if you're looking for "scary", you might be disappointed. However, because you asked, these are the titles that I can wholeheartedly recommend:

Bartleby the Scrivener by Herman Melville

Naked Lunch by William S Burroughs

Sanatorium under the sign of the Hourglass by Bruno Schulz

Oyasumi Punpun by Inio Asano (translation: "Goodnight Punpun." This one is actually a manga series. If you've never read manga before, check this one out. You won't be disappointed.)

Wieland by Charles Brockden Brown

Notes from Underground by Fyodor Dostoevsky (I have a bit of a personal attachment to this one for reasons that may seem obvious)

Memoirs of my Nervous Illness by Daniel Paul Schreber (This one was recommended by one of my readers, and I'm very glad I added it to the rotation)

Dog Soldiers by Robert Stone

We are Legion by Dennis E. Taylor (a bit of science fiction fantasy that really makes you question the concept of identity)

The Masks of Time by Robert Silverberg

Tales of 1,001 Nights, author(s) unknown

A few other authors and stories I would recommend:
Philip K. Dick;
The Long Goodbye by Raymond Chandler;
Patricia Highsmith;
James Lee Burke;
Jorge Luis Borges;
William Gibson;
Dashiell Hammett;
Haruki Murakami;
Charles Baudelaire;
Ambros Bierce;
Nikolai Gogol;
Alberty Camus;
Nathaniel Hawthorne;
M R James;
H G Wells;
J G Ballard;
Thomas Ligotti;

That's about all I can think of right now, but I think it's a pretty good place to start.

u/jp_carver · 6 pointsr/nosleep

Hello, I'm J.P. Carver you probably don't know my name and if you search for it on Amazon you get HP Chargers instead... but I've written stories such as 'I fell in love with my best friend', and 'We don't do Halloween'.

I've got a novel out [here] (https://www.amazon.com/Seer-Dark-Shadows-Light-Book-ebook/dp/B017CCI2LC) - quick and dirty description: Supernatural meets Silent Hill. I also write cyberpunk and my novella is [here] (https://www.amazon.com/DataTrigger-Ragdoll-Sequence-Book-1-ebook/dp/B00TNS855M). No quick and dirty, just lots of cool tech.

I also appeared in this anthology with lots of other cooler nosleep authors, so I got that going for me.

I'm TheJesseClark! You may know me by my pen names, Stephen King, Edgar Allen Poe, and u/Hayong. None of that is true. But this is: Subscribe to both my Facebook and my subreddit, or I'll find you.

Also, I'm featured in a book that has tons of other authors you might recognize, who are almost as great as me

u/Funandgeeky · 6 pointsr/nosleep

Hello all. I created an audio Youtube choose-your-own-adventure a while back. It definitely fits the nosleep theme, and it's narrated by yours truly.

I also wrote a fantasy book that you can buy here. It's self published at the moment, and I'm working on getting it officially published.

Check out the whole series of stories by /u/1000Vultures starting here. It makes a lot more sense if you have read them all. He did go on and publish as well. You can purchase Penpals here and there has been talk of it being turned into a movie. :)

u/iamababycow · 14 pointsr/nosleep

It's under The Lucienne Twins in the Kindle store. I just ordered it, I don't know if this link will work but here ya go :)

u/jivanyatra · 1 pointr/nosleep

House of Leaves.

There's a curse, which I can attest to: once you start the book, crazy things will happen in your life until you finish it. They start small, but your life will be hell until you finish.

It's a brilliantly engineered book, though, and definitely worthwhile if you can knock it out in a few days.

u/Aximili93 · 4 pointsr/nosleep

I have a Facebook page and have a story in the anthology Love, Death, and Other Inconveniences. And you can buy me a coffee here :)

u/MFCORNETTO · 8 pointsr/nosleep

The book is called Penpal. The series starts here and has no title, but you should read the entire thing, then start over and read it all again as soon as possible.

u/shoul · 1 pointr/nosleep

Penpal.

It's midnight where I am now and I am exhausted. My husband gets up early in the morning to go to work and I have to be up to take my kid to school. I'm not a full vampire yet, so I still have a very human schedule I have to keep.
