If you haven't fished with a fly rod before then going with a guide is a good idea, especially if you've got a buddy who wants to go and you can split the cost. It is not cheap but the guide will save you the headache of trying to find a place to get in and out of the water, can give you enough ideas to make your next few trips, and will save you the frustration of going out hoping to have a good time and not having any idea what the hell you are doing.

Especially fishing these little spring creeks you may wind up having to roll cast a lot (otherwise you will spend a lot of time trying to get your precious new flies out of the tree branches behind you), and that is one of those things that is a lot easier to do when you can watch somebody who knows what he or she is doing.

Finally, when I first started fishing with flies, I made the mistake of setting out on my own seeking out beautiful pristine new england creeks and ponds with native brook trout, and I didn't catch a god damned thing. Later I made a few outings with my uncle on a little pond full of bluegill. On the still water I could actually see what my casts were doing, and I was fishing little dries like red quills, so I got to have the whole experience of presenting the fly and seeing the fish come up and take it on top. I think it is much more gratifying to bring in a few really dopey fish with hapless technique than to go out and fail to catch any trout. Also a 1/2lb bluegill on a 3wt fly rod feels about like catching a 10lb striper.

After a few of those trips I was having fun again, I made some guided trips out west and didn't make an ass of myself.

Here are my two books I like:

Waxing is simple. There are a ton of products these days that won't require much work to keep your car protected. The easiest are the spray waxes. Use after you wash once a month(or more) and you'll be nice an protected. If you need some paint correction (i.e. polishing) and you aren't comfortable with it, you will have to spend a couple hundred if you want someone to do a good job and not actually damage the paint. Be careful of the "FUll Detail" for under $100 guys. If correction is what you need, I can suggest Odds and Ends Detailing in Sterling. If that is too far out from where you are, you might want to give them a call and ask if they can recommend someone closer. The owner is a very nice guy.

Some general tips on keeping your car looking good.

  1. Start with clean paint. Wash. At minimum claybar (easy to do, research online) then apply a wax or sealant. Sealants also come in spray form and will provide additional protection. It can be topped with wax after a few days if you want even more protection and beading. Note: Claybar is only needed once a year if you keep your car clean and protected.
  2. When washing, use a two bucket method. Look it up.
  3. Get a good washing mitt. They aren't expensive. I use this one: https://www.amazon.com/Chemical-Guys-MIC_493-Microfiber-Scratch-Free/dp/B003TTL0TE/ref=sr_1_5?crid=F45IEAEIK2RF&keywords=chenille+wash+mitt&qid=1559133753&s=gateway&sprefix=chenille+wash%2Caps%2C197&sr=8-5
  4. Get some good drying towels. I suggest waffle weave drying towels. Get 2-3 that are 24x36 or similar.
  5. Get some additional microfiber towels for spot cleaning.
  6. Be careful washing in the full sun. Rinse will dry fast and leave watermarks.
  7. Don't use automatic car washes. They leave micro swirls. In the winter just use one of those touch less washes when salt gets on your car.
  8. Do not wash your drying towel / microfiber towels with the rest of your laundry. Do them separate. Use a mild detergent with no fabric softener like Woolite. Dry on low or air dry.

The answer to your question as-asked is that VA Tire for $114 is probably having a tech do a diagnostic and give you an estimate, which might or might not take a fair amount of time (some really generic codes, like an evap system one, can require a fair bit of testing to get down to the point where you can generate an estimate). Jiffy Lube is probably just scanning the code, which is only a few seconds of work, and if it happens to turn out to be something they can fix they'll offer to do it, but if it's not they're not going to go any further. JL is not exposing themselves to any risk of spending more than a couple of minutes, therefore they can offer that service for free. So that's the short answer.

I personally don't like JL (see my other comment if you care, it's sort of a YMMV situation), but there's nothing wrong with what they're offering. A free code scan like that -- which you can get at a lot of places, including most auto parts stores (or a buddy with an OBDII scanner, they are pretty cheap now) -- isn't a bad starting point if you've got a trouble light on the dash and need to pass emissions or something. Sometimes the code will tell you pretty much exactly what's going on and what needs to be done, and you can decide from there who you want to have fix it (or even DIY, if you're comfortable with whatever needs to be done). If the scan alone isn't conclusive, then I'd go to a real shop... and probably be prepared to pay a diagnostic fee if I have them diagnose the issue and don't have them then go and fix it; that seems only fair for their time.

Depending on what's going on that's prompting the question, you may want to ask or look at previous questions asking for recommendations of repair shops in N. VA... I don't have anything specifically against VA Tire, but I haven't heard anyone ever say that they were particularly awesome, either, and there are plenty of very well-regarded shops around who I'd probably go to first.

A lot of normal groomers will take cats that are groomer friendly. Honestly though most of the time cat don't need a groomer unless they have long hair and even then they usually just need to be brushed out.

I had a couple terrible experience with my long hair cat before I finally just started doing it myself, it wasn't worth having a stressed out cat because of an impatient groomer, or a facility not equipped for cats where he was put in a cage next to dogs.

Like someone else said, if you want to cut their hair you can do it yourself with some electric clippers, just take your time and have patience with your cat. If they need a bath there are a lot of really good water free products out for cats now that are better for them then a full bath.

Cats have oils in their hair that using soap would destroy. Those oils help keep their skin from getting to dry and agitated.

I cut the cord eight years ago, and I am never going back to cable.

The OTA options are great, IMO. If I want to veg out and watch TV (i.e. not a movie I own or Netflix or Amazon Prime or something recorded on Tivo), there is always something on. Regular network shows, PBS stuff, PBS UK (which is sort of a BBC America but with slightly older shows), foreign programming, old favorite TV shows and game shows, movies, etc.

Of course, it helps that I have a 4-tuner Tivo. Amazon is selling the Tivo OTA with a lifetime subscription (i.e. no monthly fees) for only $369. The Tivo has great apps for Netflix, Amazon Prime, HBO Go, Hulu, Plex, and others. And it's super easy to swap the standard hard drive with something larger (I put a 3GB in mine).

When I got treatment for ADHD as an adult, it was as simple as finding a psychiatrist (psychologist? The one more focused on medical treatment than talking about your childhood.) that took my insurance, talking about my issues, and then getting on Ritalin. I think you can even go to your GP for it, which I didn't know at the time. It wasn't a long term fix for me but definitely helped me get it under control to the point that I could manage it without medication and I've been off Ritalin now for almost a decade.

This book was also an enormous help to me. Highly recommended.

Best of luck to you. Getting my ADHD under control was a gigantic turning point in my life.

Take 235g of semolina flour. Top off with type00 to ~300 grams. Put that in your kitchenaid mixer bowl, make a well in the middle and crack in 3 eggs. Attach dough-hook and mix for about 5 minutes, should be one mass by about this time. Pull it out and kneed it for 5-10 minutes; should be a silly-putty like texture.

Grab a scotch, you've earned it, kneeding dough is why little grannies can lift cars.

Place dough under a bowl and let it sit while you drink your scotch, 20-30 minutes. Attach your pasta press attachment (spaghetti plate) and start running slightly larger than quarter size balls of dough through it; you'll want the dough to be just barely out of sight when you add new dough to the press. Cut strands into a bowl (I have one of the smaller kitchenaids so I prop it up on a box or over the counter if I can distract the cats); bowl should have a light dusting of flour in it - gently toss the spaghetti in the flour and dry on a rack or parchment paper. I usually let it rest for about 30 minutes before cooking; feel free to dry overnight and then put into a ziplock and into your fridge (keeps about a week).

All in, takes maybe an hour once you start getting it down. Your friends will be amazed that you can whip up fresh pasta like this, but its actually pretty easy. Sauce is a completely different story and a completely different set of skills. Even something from a jar will taste better over pasta you just made yourself.

Depends on your budget and what you want from it. The Blueskysea B1W is the current bang for the buck model if you want the best one for less than $60.

If you want dual camera, GPS, etc... then the prices start to climb real fast.

And make sure to buy a high endurance memory card like this...
https://smile.amazon.com/SanDisk-Endurance-Monitoring-Adapter-SDSDQQ-032G-G46A/dp/B00V5Q1K3O/

32gb is a good bang for the buck size price with 64gb also good.

Meneed - what do you want to do in Cybersecurity? What is your current work experience? What high-level things are you good at? What's your personality like?

There are MANY different roles and career paths in "Cybersecurity". I'd suggest talking to people in the field, find out what they actually do, and figure out what sort of work you gravitate toward the most. Some disciplines are highly technical - others are less so. Figure out where you want to go before you start.

I recommend picking up a copy of this book - I've shared this with interns and some past IT colleagues who were looking to get into infosec. Easily digestible, broad but not deep, gives you a good intro and frame of reference for stepping into deeper water.

For those interested, there's a great book describing why this area is home to so much.

Internet Alley: High Technology in Tysons Corner, 1945--2005

Don't be fooled by the title, a lot in there pertains to Ashburn as well.

Sorry to hear about your hit and run. Dashcam or any witnesses?

If you don't already have a dashcam, one of the relatively inexpensive and popular models SpyTec A119 is currently $71.96 on Amazon w/ Prime. You sacrifice a cigarette lighter port for peace of mind and possible evidence for police/insurance!

Even having a dashcam makes you a safer driver, because you subconsciously know that your driving is being recorded so you're less likely to speed or make aggressive lane changes.

Be aware you will need to buy the SD card for this

I own this and its great, I did have to order another sticky pad because the one they gave you didnt hold well during the hot summers

u/Dthdlr · 34 pointsr/nova

Well the part itself is about $15.00 but you have to be sure it’s a direct compatible replacement (I think this one is but I’d have to see all of the numbers on yours better).

But what you really paid for was:

  1. Someone who knew how to diagnose the problem properly;

  2. Someone who had the part on hand RIGHT NOW

  3. Someone willing to come out and do this on a Saturday.

It seems a bit high, but it’s been years since I had to have the capacitor replaced on my system. Thought it was high then too as it does seem a lot for the inexpensive part.

But then if you paid for a hotel room while you waited for the part etc etc etc.

All great questions. Unfortunately, I am not as tech savvy so I will have to "research" all of your questions and what they mean and how to figure that out in terms of what I have going on in my apt.

I do have my own modem and router. It's this one: https://www.amazon.com/MOTOROLA-MG7550-AC1900-Gigabit-Maximum/dp/B01JGT2JI6

I am about 3 feet from the router itself. I even got a Wifi extender in my bedroom, which sorta helps, but it's annoying to reconnect to a new wifi each time I walk from living room to bedroom (I live in a one-bedroom apt), but I do it although I wouldn't say the connection is fast by any means. It will still swivel between 2 to 3 bars on that wifi logo.

I'll look into switching channels. I have done the speed test online multiple times and it looks good to go, so it's probably my set up that's the problem.

Thanks for the input!

I use this: https://www.amazon.com/VIOFO-A119S-DashCam-included-Novatek/dp/B01MFAK888

Tucked away behind my rear view mirror and automatically turns on when electronics turn on in my car. I have it plugged into USB though I might plug it into a fuse. I never think about it until I want to grab a video off of it.

/r/dashcam has good suggestions.

The telco/colo footprint in NoVa is the legacy of MAE-East and the dot com boom.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MAE-East

https://www.amazon.com/Internet-Alley-Technology-1945-2005-Innovation/dp/0262516683/ref=sr_1_fkmr1_1?keywords=tysons+corner+telco&qid=1562845403&s=gateway&sr=8-1-fkmr1

It's arguable that the federal government and contractors also drove some percentage of that growth, but it's self sustaining now. AWS East isn't dependent on federal subsidies.
