You need to sever energy links, banish, cleanse, and set up shielding so they can't put them back in and drain you. Try this:

Learn and practice the Lesser Banishing Ritual of the Pentagram morning and especially every evening before bed. There are many examples and instructions for that ritual online. Make the LRP a part of your everyday life - at least every night before bed. (I've performed the LRP every night before bed for almost 20 years now. I never miss a night.)

Prepare a purifying bath and floor wash and spiritually cleanse yourself and everything in your house. You can borrow ideas and recipes from Hoodoo practices - they're very practical and physical results focused. I find mixtures and oils with lemongrass very effective against negative energies. In fact, a tea-light oil diffuser with some water and a few drops of lemongrass oil floating in it works very well to cleanse a room.

Salt is also VERY good in baths (and pretty much everywhere else), but make sure you drink plenty of water before and after soaking in a salt bath.

Note: I've scattered salt all over the floors of an apartment before to eliminate heavy negative manifestations. It was messy to vacuum up the next day, but it worked! Leaving half an onion on a plate in a room to soak up negative energies is also helpful - throw it away outside of your house after it has sat in place for a few hours.

Also note: a hoodoo-style 'uncrossing' ritual can be very helpful for removing energy links and unwanted influences in your life. Brother Moloch has some examples and info on that.

Create energy shields for yourself and your dwelling. You will have to reinforce them every day for a few weeks to get the most out of them. Someone else posted this helpful link to get you started.

Other things that can help:

I've found the 'Hammer Rite' by Edred Thorsson to be stronger than the LBRP as far as blocking out all psychic activity goes. It seals off a room really well, but you need to be familiar with the runes to use it.

This is one of the best books you can get on the topic of psychic self defense. I've been practicing magick for over 20 years, and in my opinion, his techniques (minus the new age bits) are very effective, and the experiences he writes about are similar enough to many of my own for me to conclude that he's really road-tested his material.

When removing energy links to people or while defending yourself, imagine strongly that you're burning them away - put your force/oomph into it! You can also pretend you're holding a chainsaw or grinding device and ripping the shit out of the links. Burn and cleanse the area (in your mind) afterward, and then spackle over the hole in your aura where they came in. (Use Bruce's 'energy brushing' technique to feel yourself smoothing over the energy hole in your aura etc. See below.)

To help you get good at energy work, Robert Bruce has a document called New Energy Ways. Again, ignore the parts that sound like a new age infomercial. This shit really works!

Flower Essences: Don't go out of your way to find them, but I've found over the years that Australian Bush Flower Essences are surprisingly effective against certain types of issues. Fringed Violet (a few drops under the tongue) can help with healing/sealing the aura, Boab is said to help remove harmful links, and Macrocarpa is good for making you feel more energetic. They're great to add to a room spray for clearing/protecting a room, and can even be purchased for that purpose in a ready made spray. Again, don't go out of your way to obtain them at great expense. They're helpful in some situations, but it's not going to be a mind-blowingly powerful aid with amazing results (although I did have a surprisingly strong effect the first time I tried fringed violet). More like a helpful component as part of your overall effort.

Banishing Room Spray: you can make a 'banishing/cleansing' room spray pretty easily. Make a strong tea with (dried) Hyssop, Rue, and Agrimony, and chant the psalms over it. Psalms 10 and 23 are good to use if you aren't sure. (You don't have to be Christian to use the Bible as an effective book of power.) Chant or sing/intone the names of Archangels (especially Michael - pronounced Mee-Kigh-el etc.) over the tea until you can feel their force flowing into the liquid - try to make the liquid vibrate with the note you sing while chanting their names. When you feel like the liquid is fully charged, put it into a spray/mist bottle and spray yourself and the air in your room to set up a barrier and clean/clear the place.

If you feel a tingling on your back or stomach in a specific area which you intuitively suspect is the result of a negative energy link, you can use a pen to draw protective sigils or crosses / pentagrams over that spot before sleep. (Don't sleep in a white shirt - the design will transfer when you sweat!) It can help while you're weathering the storm. Try not to overreact to every little tingling sensation or you'll drive yourself nuts!

Watch as many comedies as you can. Laughter really is helpful. Music is helpful for charging a place and changing the atmosphere. I often play religious choral music for that purpose.

>I would also like to start 'working' with a higher entity. I'd like to make contact with my HGA, but am not adept enough to perform The Abramelin Operation (seems very scary).

The Abramelin Operation is a bit dated and a lot of people (not all though) use Crowley's Liber Samekh Ritual to establish contact with the HGA. It's supposed to be performed astrally several times a day. Lon Milo Duqette wrote a clearer explanation than Crowley did of how to perform the ritual in his book A Handbook of the Rituals of Thelema. However, that's not usually the first step in contacting the HGA. In Crowley's system, a person must :

  1. Gain control over the body of light and rising on the planes. This is often assigned due to the fact that, as I already said, the ritual is not suppose to take place on the physical plane, rather in the astral one after rising on the planes.

  2. Master Asana and Pranayama. Asana is being able to sit completely still in a single position without moving a single muscle for a prolonged period of time and Pranayama is breath control. This is because the HGA is often seen as your subconscious mind and these meditative practices are necessary to be able to quiet your conscious mind so that you may better hear and listen to your subconscious. If you'd like to read more about this, I'd recommend Liber ABA

  3. Master ceremonial magick techniques (i.e. Star Ruby, Star Sapphire, lesser rituals of the pentagram and hexagram, greater rituals of the pentagram and hexagram, etc.) and develop a better understanding of ritual. This is obviously assigned due to the fact that in order to successfully perform a ritual to invoke the HGA, you need to have an understanding of ritual and ability to do it.

  4. Perfect the art of Bhakti. Bhakti is complete devotion to a deity. It includes such things as devoting all acts (i.e. eating, drinking, sleeping, working, breathing, etc.) to the chosen deity, developing a mantra for the deity and reciting it constantly in your head every second of the day without stopping, developing an invocation to the deity, performing ritual service for the deity several times in a 24 hour period including the middle of the night, modeling yourself to behave like the chosen deity, etc. This is necessary as it helps develop the one-pointed focus and devotion needed to successful invoke the HGA. If you'd like, you can read more about this in Liber Astarte

    >I would love suggestions from you all regarding anything that would help me practice low-level ritual work!

    I'd recommend trying out

    The Star Sapphire

    The Star Ruby

The Greater Ritual of the Hexagram

The Lesser Ritual of the Hexagram

    The Solar Adorations

    The Threefold Eucharist

    The Mass of the Pheonix

    >Are there any other ways to do this? I feel an affinity toward Angelic forces and have a keen interest in Enochian but am unsure where to begin.

If you're looking to get into Enochian magick, (which I would highly recommend; it's one of my favoritae systems of magick) I'd recommend reading Enochian Magick in Theory and Enochian Magick in Practice by Frater Yechidah.

    >I have stayed away from Goetia thus far and would like to focus a little more on white magick (not because I think Goetia is 'wrong'; its just not for me right now). However, I am curious if The Key of Solomon would provide any use for someone wanting to learn about white magic? Am I correct in stating that the astrological pentacles are of use for the magus to use at their will?

I wouldn't classify the Goetia as black magick. Demons in the occult are not the same as demons in Abrahramic religion. In fact, I (as well as others I have talked to) have noticed that the Enochian angels are very similar in character and personality to the Goetic demons. I would also not characterize the Key of Solomon pentacles and sigils as black magick.

But to answer your questions; yes, anyone could use the pentacles (with or without conjuring any of the Goetic demons; the consecration rite for them does not include any evocation, just a blessing) and see results.

As for general books I would recommend to a beginner:

The Chicken Qabalah of Rabbi Lamed Ben Clifford by Lon Milo Duquette

the Golden Dawn by Israel Regardie

The Mystical and Magical System of the A .'. A .'. by James A. Eshelman

777 And Other Qabalistic Writings by Aleister Crowley

Gems From the Equinox by Aleister Crowley and edited by Israel Regardie

I would like to add that I have invoked the goddess Isis (using the phrase loosely because she tends to do whatever she wants) on more than one occasion (all of them potent and overwhelming) and have had interactions with her since the 90s, and at no time have I ever experienced anything terrifying or suggestive that she was malevolent in any way. She has her own personality, can be brutally honest, and can even sometimes display a bit of attitude and a royal air (being the Queen of Heaven as she has been known). Your experience here does not have any signs of being from or influenced by that goddess. It sounds more like you were ambushed by an opportunistic (and very malevolent) entity. Read this book to learn some very effective and practical methods for protection against such things. It's the best I've found in print.

If you're truly interested in learning about the goddess Isis, the REAL history and useable practices for furthering your relationship with her, this book is the best you will find.

What others have said regarding protection and staying away from that environment is fairly good. I don't think it would be a safe plan to try to clear the house by yourself. A couple friends (with energy/magick skill) would be ideal. Also, some salt baths would probably be helpful i.e. pour half a bag of salt into a bath and soak in it. Drink plenty of water before and after. You can bless the water and call on divine names to make it into a potent cleansing tool to kick things up a notch before you get in.

If you can find a decent Reiki master in your area, you might want to get a couple healing sessions to help close up holes in your aura and help return yourself to a state of emotional balance. Good practitioners capable of channeling large quantities of energy can be difficult to find - check their credentials and avoid self-taught healers.

Other things that I've used successfully in the past to help overcome severe negative spiritual events include Fringed Violet (fixes holes/trauma), Grey Spider flower (helps with fear), and Boab (removes neg. links) Australian Bush Flower Essences. Look those up. Their effects (as an energetic medicine - a few drops under the tongue) can be subtle or intense depending on your need. Sometimes I put several drops of essences into a spray/mist bottle, and I use that to help quickly clear a room! A little Florida Water in the bottle also helps (because of the herbal content) and smells nice.

Hi! Ok, I need to talk about the end game first: If you practice enough, you not only will get results, but you will start getting them all the time, without actually doing anything. Looks wonderful? Yes and no. The problem here is not to get to that point, but who you will be when you get there.

If you have hate, insecurities, fears, those will start to manifest too on their own. Basically what you are inside will all become 'external'.

That is why the very first thing you need to learn, and keep practicing daily, is banishing.

The goal of banishing is to align you with the divine, and to clean you up and transform you. As Crowley said about the LBRP "Those who regard this ritual as a mere device to invoke or banish spirits, are unworthy to possess it. Properly understood, it is the Medicine of Metals and the Stone of the Wise".

Roughly, the four elements correspond to core elements of the human personality: air is thought, fire is will, water is emotion, and earth is the physical. So it is like a respiration: First you exhale all the used up/low/unwanted elemental energy in each quarter. Once you have emptied, you can then 'inhale' the high grade stuff delivered to you by gently asking the archangels.

The quabalistic cross at the beginning serves to make a first rough alignment with the divine and draw a bit of energy to kick start the process: You pull some energy from above, ground it down below, then equilibrate it between Severity/Strength/Mars and Mercy/Jupiter. The center of the cross then becomes Tipharet/Beauty/Sun (Brush up on your tree of life if needed to understand that better).

I recommend reading Israel Regardie's 'Middle Pillar'. By the way don't start up on the Middle Pillar straight away, you risk being blown off by the energy since you are not a proper vessel to it yet (been there). Repeated practice of the LBRP is needed first. The middle pillar is used to basically draw a shitload of energy into you.

Once you have started a daily practice of banishing, you can safely take up magick. There I have to, once again, recommend Alan Chapman 'Advanced Magick for Beginners'

http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/1904658415

Everything you need to know about magick is in there. Will save you the trip through Old School Ritual/Chaos Magick. It is really extremely simple once you get the knack. Just play with it, and start practicing it balls to the wall. You'll get results, just remember to choose wisely what you want and plan in advance, because you can be damn sure you will get exactly what you asked for.

Also, the goal of it is not to get something for nothing. This will transform you as much as it transform the world around you. It will then be made obvious by experience that internal and external is the same thing. Hopefully at this stage you will have found your 'true will' and everything will be peachy.

Edit: Because I tend to repeat myself a lot when the kids are around :)

777's great to have on standby as a handy reference, especially when you're constructing rituals & operations, at the most basic level it helps to get things just so 😃
I'd say 'Living Thelema' is an excellent intro to the subject and always good to get different perspectives on things-even if some it is the similar info. It's packed with really good explanations of and guides to basic and some more advanced ritual & practice & lots of advice concerning self-motivation & personal daily practice etc. No better or worse, but for me slightly more approachable is Lon Milo Duquette's 'The Magick of Aleister Crowley; A Handbook of The Rituals of Thelema'

https://www.amazon.com/dp/1578632994/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_awdb_5SuTzbDZ5ZDM6

They actually work well in tandem & compliment each other nicely. There's a 'Speech in the Silence' collection of lectures & podcast on YouTube https://www.youtube.com/user/speechinthesilence

Lots of groovy stuff on there covering a wide range of Thelemic subjects. David Shoemaker does a lot of podcasts on the channel lecturing on much of the ground that's covered in 'Living Thelema' It's not exactly an audiobook but great to listen to whilst you're doing the washing up! Lon Milo Duquette does a few on there too along with IAO131 & others. Well worth a listen to get a handle on contemporary Thelemic thinking.
Enjoy & good luck! 👍

Yes, but they're not public and are in the hands of powerful sorcerers. Your popular grimoires are relatively harmless. For example, my personal grimoires, containing knowledge given to me by demons, written in magical ink containing blood is quite dangerous. Considering the grimoire is written with a variation of a magical formula, my blood is added to it, and it the ink is enchanted, the grimoire is a talisman in itself where the magic in it was communicated to me by demons where the symbols and formulas reference that knowledge. This means the grimoire contains magical power in itself, but it has a will on its own, so anyone who has it has direct access to the magic, but there is a real risk of demonic possession. Those grimoires stay locked in heavily warded vaults and/or safety deposit boxes. But copies of popular grimoires, like The Lesser Keys of Solomon, are harmless. Yes, there are forbidden and locked away powerful and dangerous books but they're in the custody of powerful magicians. Ones in the public domain, like Abramelins stuff, are signs to knowledge and power but, in themselves, are just copies and are thus magically inert.

Yea, there are magic books out there containing a lot of magical power where all you have to do is do the incantation and stuff happens are a thing, but you won't likely find them because they tend to be rare and heavily secured. I have created volumes myself, but they are all heavily secured, physically and magically.

It seems to me, reading your post, that you are facing some mental blocks of your own creation. You say you are a 'spiritual dipshit' with 'disillusions of grandeur'. You also convey much fear, over and over, about various aspects of your spiritual practice, and your relations with others.

I would suggest, that while you have obviously had genuine spiritual experiences, what you lack is a context of a guiding philosophy to make sense of it all.

You are not a dipshit; you are made in the Image and Likeness of the Divine - and with that comes power and responsibility. Power to control your thoughts and experiences, and responcibility to do so wisely.

As to the fear - this is an illusion, created by your own ego. Fear can manifest results in your experience, but these are only the shadows of your bloated nothingness; the reflections of your fear itself. A healthy respect, and patience is essential, but nothing will block you in this or any other venture more so than fear.

I believe it is time that you set aside the development of spiritual phenomena until you have formed, to your own satisfaction, a working philosophy of the Spiritual, Divine nature of things and your relationship with IT. From this standpoint, you will have more success. I have found great wisdom in these writings:

Words to the Wise: Manly Hall

Lectures on Ancient Philosophy: Manly Hall

The Kyballion: Three Initiates

See here's the issue with this kind of question, you want instant results, like just as water, but it doesn't work like that. You'd have to work many years to learn the basis of magic and learn evocation (which some of us here have), and then become familiar with a particular spirit or demon by working with him/her for a long time. Then you may offer that spirit a trade for great power and wealth.

Here's a good resource where some of the ancient manuscripts are listed: http://www.esotericarchives.com/. A lot of them discuss working with spirits.

For a more modern book on the subject I would suggest Summoning Spirits by Konstantinos but he's going to require you have some basic knowledge of high magic first. So for that I would recommend High Magic: Theory and Practice

Happy hunting.

You're brother-in-law sounds like he has excellent taste in books! I too have read Serpent in the Sky, and can confirm that it is exactly how you describe it, which is not surprising considering that West drew much of his material for it from Schwaller de Lubicz's work. It is also written in a considerably more accessible style than the writings of Schwaller de Lubicz. I would also point out, for the benefit of any who are interested in this topic but don't have the $150 to spend on de Lubicz's magnum opus, that there are a number of his other volumes available much more cheaply:

The Temple in Man: Sacred Architecture and the Perfect Man

Symbol and the Symbolic: Ancient Egypt, Science, and the Evolution of Consciousness

Sacred Science: The King of Pharaonic Theocracy

A Study of Numbers: A Guide to the Constant Creation of the Universe

The Egyptian Miracle: An Introduction to the Wisdom of the Temple

Esoterism and Symbol

Nature Word

All of these, which are also much shorter than The Temple of Man, may be purchased via Amazon for between $10 and $20, and no doubt may be found even more cheaply secondhand.

Skinner and Rankine do some great translations of traditional grimoires.
The Goetia of Dr Rudd might be right up your alley if Goetia is your interest. It is a great translation of multiple manuscripts that often get lumped together under the title of "goetia."

I also recommend Techniques of Graeco-Egyptian Magic. While it isn't actually a grimoire it is an eye opening work that breaks down how to understand older grimoires (specifically the Greek Magical Papyri).

I have heard great things about Jake Straton-Kent's work but only just barely cracked one of his open so can't actually confidently recommend it yet.

And if you want a book that has both Grimoire and in-depth working of that grimoire with advice and experiences of the author I 'm happy to recommend Gateways Through Stone and Circle, Ceremonial Magic & The Power of Evocation, and [The Key to Solomon's Key] (https://www.amazon.com/Key-Solomons-This-Symbol-Masonry/dp/1888729287/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1483818437&sr=1-1&keywords=key+to+solomons+key), all of which are not the best translations but great working guides (and come with softer price tags to boot)

Picatrix is not exactly beginner level or easy to fully embrace all at once. It's difficult material philosophically and otherwise. The astrology in it is extremely advanced. And the elements in it are much more pagan than Christian. But since you mentioned it I feel compelled to point to the only good complete English translation published by a friend of mine: http://www.amazon.com/The-Complete-Picatrix-Classic-Astrological/dp/1257767852 It was interpreted later by Christian writers like Agrippa, Ficino and Bruno, who filtered some of the more controversial material. So if you can digest Agrippa it is really all you need. My friend also has published a modern translation of Occult Philosophy Book One as well: http://www.amazon.com/Three-Books-Occult-Philosophy-Book/dp/1105898792 Buying Book One will help support the work on Two and Three.

I recently fell into the Occult world as well. A was given a deck of tarot cards. It was the Rider-Waite deck. I started reading about it and a spark lit. Now I am consuming everything I can get my hands on.

I like MindandMagick as well. Also, I found this video on the Hermetic Principles very helpful and well explained.

As for reading, I have started reading the Liber Null by Peter Carroll and Condensed Chaos by Phil Hine. Recommend both if you're interested in Chaos Magick.

Some of the seminal works on Wicca are Wicca: A Guide for the Solitary Practitioner. by Scott Cunningham and Buckland's Complete Book of Witchcraft by Raymond Buckland.

Good luck on your journey. Personally, I am starting small by working on my meditation, mindfulness and single-pointed thought. Also, studying the tarot a few cards at a time.

Despite the name this book is good and easy introduction: Practical Sigil Magic - Creating Personal Symbols for Success

https://www.amazon.com/Practical-Sigil-Magic-Creating-Personal/dp/0738731536

Easy to find as pdf also

After you learn to use sigils, I'd recommend to check memes and stories as sigils. An naturally learn the theory behind magic so you have better understanding what consequences of your actions might be.

Unfortunately there isn't really a book that teaches you the methodology without having to do a lot of reading between the lines. Picatrix, Three Books of Occult Philosophy, and Three Books on Life are basically the best source texts.

There are links to my site that talks about different parts of astrological magic, but I haven't written a step-by-step thing about it. I share a lot of astrological timing for various talismans as they come up on my site's Facebook page. Renaissance Astrology is another option, but that website is, in my opinion, kind of a design nightmare, but there are a lot of examples of talismans and elections (some good, some bad). There are even courses available, I took one starting out, but it was really meh and I was pretty disappointed in it. Private tutoring is another really great option, nothing beats one-on-one attention. :)

u/TriumphantGeorge · 1 pointr/occult

Depends what you want. If you want rituals and mystery and so on, then you can immerse yourself in that. If you just want to get practical, then you can simplify things a bit. There are probably two sides: finding out about 'magickal practices' and then exploring 'the nature of reality' (which turns out to be about 'the nature of the self').

There's a free copy of Phil Hine's Condensed Chaos available here. Alan Chapman's Advanced Magick for Beginners is definitely worth your while. And perhaps a mix such as Magick on the Edge to give you a flavour of different people's approaches.

To explore about reality/yourself, you should consider looking into non-duality (e.g. Presence by Rupert Spira, The Direct Path by Greg Goode, the work of Douglas Harding.) It's a nice thing to be doing in parallel to any more esoteric stuff; keeps your perspective intact perhaps. If you're feeling daring, George Berkeley, or later authors, exploring things more philosophically.

Have fun.

u/RockGnasher · 2 pointsr/occult

What are you interested in? Wicca, candle magick, hermeticism and alchemy, Setianism, Qabalah, tarot, mythology, astrology, goetia, esoteric christianity? A little bit of everything?

My recommendation is to start with something you're really interested in and pick up that one thing. If you're interested in Crowley, then you might be interested in tarot. My suggestion is getting a simple book by a laymen's author like Amber Jayanti on the tarot. As you read the book, circle, highlight or write down (or add to a shopping list) sources to which that author refers - Jayanti may cite Paul Foster Case a lot. Once you read some Case books, then you'll start to see Crowley pop up. Pick up Lon Milo DuQuette's book on Crowley's Tarot. Then you can probably read Crowley's Book of Thoth.

My other advice is not to worry about not picking up every little detail of every book. You won't have the schema necessary for every small detail in every book, and part of reading in the occult is rediscovering the deeper meaning of something you thought you already knew, like a spiral upward.

u/catherineirkalla · 1 pointr/occult

It depends on a LOT of factors. Unlike some posters here I don't necessarily believe that you will know when you are ready for more/different but I don't necessarily think that random reddit posters will either.

If you are attracted to Goetic themes but are worried about the demonic implications, you may find Enochian/Angelical practice worth looking into. Its pretty hard-core and involved, like Goetic practice tends to be, but you are working with (what I would argue are) very different entities.

Its a very complex subject but Aaron Leitch has written a a very good beginner guide that I highly recommend.

There's several texts. Try these:

For a primary source try The Book of Abramelin the Mage. This is a recent translation, probably easier to read than the old Mather's version you might have looked at previously.

For an overview, and a bunch of modern ideas about the rite, try 21st Century Mage.

For Crowley's version, there's Liber Samekh.

Basically the rite involves a gradual withdrawal from society over the course of 6 to 18 months. Most people I know of who have had success had it within a year (9 months for me personally, though I continued on for a full year.)

You can re-work the rite to fit as closely as possible to your lifestyle, assuming you do not have a spare 18 months to drop out of society. But to make it work, you'll need to gradually diminish the TV and internet after the first few months, ditch the parties, start fasting regularly, meditate, pray, etc. You become a monk for a year so, to the best of your capabilities, and at the bare minimum, you want to take the final few weeks off from work.

u/Aussify · 3 pointsr/occult

I simply had an altar set up, and had been offering to him devoutly for a couple weeks. Initially, I usually offered water or mullein incense, but I started offering water with alchemical elixirs in it. I made these elixirs some time ago and spent a lot of time with them, so I think this made a big difference in the way I received him.

I posted the altar here a while back. Before this altar though I read some of the Emerald Tablets, and had been reading Rene Schwaller's Sacred Science, which shifted my understanding of the Neteru quite a bit.

That's it, really. I was literally just offering like any other day, and he told me to sit down for this. I just meditated and tried to transcribe everything the best I could. It definitely surprised me.

Have a solid understanding of symbol, scent, color and planetary correspondences are an essential start.

Have the right incense, do the proper cleansing, creation of complementary or protective layman and talismans as well as getting your god of the hour and god of the day sorted are also essential.

Thank you for getting the joke.

I would not really advise to solely look at Enochian Text for this, you might want to start looking at
A Dictionary of Angels for some good baseline info
and the Sepher Rezial Hemelach

Fifth World Books - 419 E. 2100 South, SLC, UT. Ph.(801)486-6437 Will often know where to point you as well. Rosenblum's World of Judaica on Devon St. In Chicago can direct you as well as get you some very hard to find reference books.

Hope those can give you some more diverse and accurate sources of information.

EDIT: Also of course the Sefer Yetzirah: The Book of Creation and The Magician's Companion

The OS should be approached through basic knowledge of Neoplatonic planetary and theurgic magic-- NOT goetia/Solomonic magic. It greatly helps to have some familiarity with the Arbatel--the 16th century book in which the OS are introduced. Understanding what the book is actually saying also helps a lot.

Either look into the work about the Seven Spheres by Rufus Opus (Joshua Gadbois) if you are looking for a Rosicrucian angle to do this work. (Joshua and I did a group working related to the OS with 2 other people back in 2010) OR, if you are looking into something a little looser, user friendly, and mystical in line with Neoplatonic thought, see my own work: The Seal of Secrets of the World Several videos on the topic are also on my YouTube site, such as How I Work with the Olympic Spirits

u/Dajork who also has a reddit page r/planetarymagic is another excellent resource.

Unless you are looking to buy a ton of books I would recommend starting with Aaron Leitch's 2-volume The Angelical Language and his book The Essential Enochian Grimoire. That will give you good foundation with language, history, and usage covered in just 3 books. If you are digging the topic after those then I can certainly recommend some from there :-)

u/catbull · 2 pointsr/occult

If she's a good reader, I'd recommend Grimoires, one of the smartest non-fiction books I've ever read on the subject. About 1/5 of it is references/bibliography. Advanced my knowledge by more per hour than anything I can remember reading.

u/Amaranthh · 1 pointr/occult

I keep seeing these 'what is it" posts. If you are a serious occultists you are going to need a reference volume.

The Magician's Companion: A Practical and Encyclopedic Guide to Magical and Religious Symbolism (Llewellyn's Sourcebook)

It is very difficult to establish any kind of reading order for occult studies. Occultism itself is an infinitely tangled strand of truths, half-truths, and lies. It is difficult (perhaps in possible) to identify a starting point and (getting lost is part of the fun).

Nonetheless, I will do my best to identify some possible entry points.

  • Crowley Created a reading list for A.'.A.' initiatives. This is not a bad place to start if you are interested in the Thelemic approach.
  • If Chaos Magick interests you, Liber Null & Psychonaut is not a bad place to start.
  • My personal favorite approach would be to start withUndoing yourself with energized meditation and other devices After sufficiently "deprogramming" yourself, you may hugely benefit from reading The Dao De Ching, The Torah, The New Testament, the Koran, The Bhagavad gita and other sacred texts not necessarily associated with esotericism. These books contain the most profound truths beneath layers of bullshit (the bull being Taurus/ the sacred cow/ ra) and allegory.
u/notfancy · 2 pointsr/occult

You use the Great Table: from the appropriate quadrant and sub quadrant, you get the Greater Name of God, the Lesser Name of God, the name of the Ruling Archangel, and optionally the name of the appropriate Angel, and you invoke in that hierarchical order.

The books by Aaron Leitch and Dean Wilson give the method in detail.

Sorry for the ugly link, on mobile and forgot how to format it. It's a great addition to my library, but I haven't finished reading it yet. Would recommend :) be careful as the intro states, there are "traps" designed to injure uneducated practitioners....

Here is a link to arguably the best introduction to wicca that there is.

https://www.amazon.com/Wicca-Solitary-Practitioner-Scott-Cunningham/dp/0875421180/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1519634712&sr=8-3&keywords=wicca+guide&dpID=51j%252BwKpACML&preST=_SY291_BO1,204,203,200_QL40_&dpSrc=srch

This was the first "occult" book i have ever purchsed/read. I am not a wiccan but that book "opened the doors" for me so to speak. Once I realized that i was interested in much more than just wicca the following book by peter j carrol steered me in the right direction based on the practical exercises in an almost textbook like format.

I have enjoyed this one.

Probably not a beginner's book, and I don't agree with everything that's presented, but it has helped me make connections that I might not have come to on my own. Easily one of my favorites.

u/Realwizard · 3 pointsr/occult

You're welcome. No worries about the length, it was relevant to what you were asking.

Everyone has a 'sixth sense' it's the mind. It's where all the other senses get sorted out and you get your perceptual experience. Your mind is good at using the information it has on hand, sometimes that information is commonly accepted as legitimate by your current conscious awareness, all to often it is filtered out by socially created constructs that determine what experiences are acceptable in a given culture/society.

Freaking out is a pretty typical reaction when experience defies your expectations of what you have come to accept reality as.

You seem to be doing fine already, just intuitively picking things up. Feeding the fire, candles, fire related rituals, offerings to the salamander. It sound like it's taken an interest in you, possibly from before, not sure.

If you can remember the feeling of it when it arrived, the sense of it, and you can visualise in meditation, and ask it to come back while lighting another candle, I'm sure you can continue your process. Pick up some literature on how to go about it. I've seen this book recommended before, but haven't read it.

Check out the Thoth tarot book for more info on reading the cards. I also recommend reading Lon Milo Duquettes book on understanding the Thoth Tarot. Also also, check out liber Theta from Temple of Thelema . There's also an explanation and analysis on divination with Tarot from Soror Meral in Temple of Thelema's periodical called In the Continuum.

I would say that it was widely used. I’m reading through Owen Davies’ Grimoires: A History of Magic Books right now and he has a whole section dedicated to the SATOR square. It shows up in grimoires all throughout the Middle Ages from the Arab world to Spain and continues to appear all the way up until the 18th century. You’re correct that no one now has any idea why it was so important but it’s clear from the historical record that it was important enough that magicians kept spreading it about. No one thought to write down, however, why the SATOR square exists, what it means, or how to use it so it exists an enigmatic and intriguing magickal artifact, much like these items from Pompeii.

u/Magus_Mind · 2 pointsr/occult

I'm fond of Bill Whitcomb's The Magician's Companion.

...also Crowly suggested in Magic Without Tears that a serious practitioner would construct their own 777. I think the idea is to have intimate knowledge of the correspondences of all of the symbols you work with. Symbols can be powerful tools, but they are definitely amplified when they interact with each other in your subconscious perception.

If you're looking to dive headlong into practice, I found Advanced Magick for Beginners to be a helpful, fun read.

I don't think "demons, aliens, and all things occult" are typically covered in a single, definitive work. Especially because "aliens" are usually part of UFOlogy and not occultism.

Regarding occult topics though:

- The New Encyclopedia of the Occult
- Three Books of Occult Philosophy
- Dictionary of Demons
- A Dictionary of Angels
- The Golden Dawn
- Gems of the Equinox
- The Complete Magician's Tables
- The Magician's Companion

There are literally hundreds of other resources available too, but these are the ones I could think of off the top of my head.

The Kybalion was first published by the Yogi Publication Society in 1908 and has been reprinted many times in several different editions and formats. The lastest is the centenary edition pulished this year by Tarcherperigee. This is verbatim with the original edition of 1908.

Amazon have it in stock, priced very modestly at under $15 for the hardback edition.

and some more here.

If you like Liber Null I suggest picking up Frater U.'.D.'.'s book on sigils. Which can also be found here

Interesting. What are you most into? Catholicism? Wicca? Afro Religions? Chaos Magic - Goethia?

Well, here's some searching topics for you:

Catholicism: Look for "extreme unction" (accepted by the Official Church), "La Santisima Muerte", "San La Muerte", "San Lázaro" (Not accepted by the Church).

Wicca: Search for some works of a Wiccan called Konstantinos. Has some interesting books.

Example: https://www.amazon.com/Summoning-Spirits-Evocation-Llewellyns-Practical/dp/1567183816/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1511354337&sr=8-2&keywords=konstantinos+wicca

Afro Religions (Umbanda, Kimbanda, Candomblé): Look on info about Orixá Omulú, Orixá Obaluaié, Exús. Well, most Afro Religions has good knowledge about the Dead.

Chaos Magic: Well, that isn't my expertise, but here's a lot of people into it, keep asking if this is your case.

-------------------------------------------

These are just some beggining points you can search. Enjoy!.

http://www.amazon.com/Advanced-Magick-Beginners-Alan-Chapman/dp/1904658415

In this book it offers this framework for ANY magic (I cut and pasted this from a review - it appears in the book repeatedly):

  1. Decide what is to occur.
  2. Ensure the occurrence has the means of manifestation.
  3. Choose an experience (ritual experience).
  4. Decide the "Ritual Experience" means the same as the intended occurrence.
  5. Undergo Ritual Experience.
  6. Results.

    For example

  7. It will rain today

  8. It can rain from the sky via gathered clouds

  9. Spilling water onto the ground from a cup

  10. Spilling water onto the ground means it is raining

  11. Spill water onto the ground

  12. It rains in the near future

According to Mr Chapman's theory following those 6 guidelines will enable you to create your own rituals, complicated or simple. On some level what you put in, you will get out.

    Edit: Chapman, not Carroll.

Favored among chaos magicians mostly.

Use goes way back to cave man times..the whole draw a animal on a wall, draw spears through it, then go out and manifest it in real life and hunt your food, in theory you made or had a idea, to see a deer... then to kill it. then you did it, kind of basic magick. basic sigil idea in a way.

Symbols and sigils..that's a huge topic so much to cover im not a expert so I won't try to explain it much.

Sigils are basically just taking a idea or concept, making it into a sigil/symbol of some sort that represents your desire...then charging it some how with a energy. You then after it is charged find a way to launch it into the universe to manifest...this can be done a lot of ways... through pain, have sigil on papper, burn it, when you get burned slightly use that pain to imagine the sigil going into the ether of the universe and being launched off, using pain as a gate way in theory. You can also use dance, dance to exhaustion and then when you're so tired and collapse you fall and mentally visualize the sigil being launched...

or sigil sex magick. you can draw the sigil on your girlfriend/partner or what ever, reach orgasm..at point of orgasm you launch the sigil mentally into the universe to manifest. or you can use masterbation..same theory.

It's basically a "cool" way of spell casting in my eyes..or a lower downed version if you do it that way.. for any sigils to really work i'd think to launch them you'd need a actual circle to entrap that energy so it can be launched..and perhaps the methods of charging and launching it should be well thought out and done.

Basically just a desire, made into a sigil/symbol, fired off into the universe....

they have a hit and miss way of working out so i've heard. it's really tricky random shot magick. they supposivly take the least resistance way of manifesting and apparently this can really fuck you over if your wish isn't that well put out. you basically write out what you want then turn that into a sigil, should of been more clear, but that's the drift of it basically from my perspective.

I saw this book and it looks quite promising - http://www.amazon.com/Practical-Sigil-Magic-Creating-Personal/dp/0738731536/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1458016502&sr=8-1&keywords=sigil+magic+frater

Looks like a good place to start. That or grant morrisons lectures on chaos magick and sigils, that's how I found out about it.

> How do I undo the conditioning that causes me to irrationally fear/reject/recoil at any mention of the Devil, Serpent/Snake, Baphomet, and other spiritual concepts that would go against my Pentecostal upbringing?

practice, both in the sense of trying repeatedly and developing a practice. the more educated you become about the significance of these symbols, the less the perverted pentacostal interpretation will appeal to your instincts or even stand out.

knee-jerk reactions from ingrained beliefs are a function of the lower emotional and animal body. you (your reason) are riding a horse that gets spooked whenever it sees a snake or a goat, and whenever it gets spooked, you get spooked and attribute significance to the horse getting spooked. someone with mastery over their horse would calmly allow the horse to be spooked and simply rein it in.
