Thoughts being typed. Please ask any questions you have or feel free to discuss. Overall I'm blown away...

So I received these bad boys yesterday concurrently just as I got home to cover the Mrs. on the school run, phew. Coming from a CV1 and previously DK2. Only mobile headset experience is Daydream with Pixel XL (thoroughly unimpressed). Middle of the road IPD

Going to add some structure and more detail to this but immediate observations and comparisons:

  • Optics are stunning on both.
  • The resolution bump from CV1 is most definitely an upgrade, not a side grade.
  • The Quest is very front heavy but good adjustment gets it comfortable enough but not comfortable. This is a bit of a concern given I'd like to demo to people of all shapes and sizes, perhaps experience will help.
  • Passthrough is awesome and better on the S, though still the scale seemed off on the S, despite the obvious correction compared to Quest. I'd say at about 1.5 away from the S the scale looks accurate but closer is odd.
  • Audio on S is better than expected and will be fine for me when room isn't too noisy, obviously not as good as CV1 on the low end but for me, the option not to have anything on the ears is much more comfortable and makes it easier for glasses wearers to get on and off. Quest was similar but didn't sound as good as S to me and will be making use of over-ears when taking out and about.
  • Speaking of glasses, it's a none issue for S and with Quest I didn't even use the spacer. My glasses are big but sit quite high up my bridge. No need for contact lenses anymore and personally won't be getting prescription lenses as makes it harder to share.
  • Some Quest games /OS still have some kinks to iron out. Rec Room I couldn't log in and they've acknowledged an issue. Additionally I found other titles crashed back to "home" when my battery was getting low. This may or may not be related to the battery state at the time.
  • Vader Immortal - omg, wow. I just can't, wouldn't even say I'm a massive Star Wars fan but wow. Everyone needs to pick this up even though it's under an hour. Cannot believe what they've managed to do with a Snapdragon 835, the presentation is amazing and despite being a bit of a VR veteran now, seeing the Star Wars world "blown up" to scale really took me back to that initial feeling of VR/Mario 64.
  • As mention in Tested's review of S, there is no longer a tilt option, which I really miss as find it allows you to get the sweet spot more easily, which in turn allows better comfort options. Despite the bigger sweet spot I'm stuggling to get it along with the comfort as easily as CV1, but expect some time I'll find the right fit.
  • The cable on S is heavier I think. As you can have your "front facing" position point anywhere, naturally I set it up to have the cable behind me. I decided to ran the cable through the rear velcro on headset strap to have the cable come out behind the headset instead of west-south-west. However due to the weight of the cable that wasn't the way to go. Need to take it back to how it was and compare.
  • Rift S extensions - I managed to use passive 2m (perhaps 6ft) USB and Display Port extensions without issue. I like to route through my TV cabinet and it offers a bit of extra length, safety to the PC if snagging and can even go into the dinning room now too as no need for sensors and cables a bit longer! The display port extension was the following, and I recommend UGreen generally for USB cables:https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B01KRLQG2M
  • The convenience of Quest cannot be underestimated. You are immediately in VR when you put it on and can take it anywhere, even whilst wearing it!
  • Tracking - So, starting with the S, imho it is better than CV1. Now this is very subjective but fundamentally I would not go back. Warning WOT:For comparison, I had/have very wide roomscale with 4 sensors (1 which I scarcely used as wasn't cabled managed and made little difference) it was incredibly neat and no wires could be seen, each mounted in top 4 corners of room'ish. I had to purchase the expensive 4 separate host controller per port USB card to get stable sensors, but once eventually finding the right combination was excellent. So for a new user this is asking a lot, but setting all that aside as I had it set up perfectly, I would still get the odd dead spot and if looking closely there was the occasional very slight wobble, but not something that would effect game play. Fast forward to S and the hand tracking is perfect, I cannot see any wobbles at all and the are no dead spots anywhere in terms of where you go. Obviously the cameras can only cover so much FOV but I did not find that a problem once during play and the only area where it clearly could be a problem is hand over hand close up to the headset (e.g. how I would hold a gun in Onward), however I found I was able to just extend this an inch or two naturally and comparing tracking overall I would say inside out on S is a clear improvement and definitely the future. The Quest is very similar to the Rift but clearly doesn't have as big a FOV and when I purposely broke out of the FOV, it's not quite as smooth as S (couldn't really notice at all on S), but did not find this a problem in games.
  • Quest outdoors - Not sure how that chap in the field managed it. The optical tracking is absolutely fine, headset tracks flawlessly, however the IR tracking of the controllers was a no go for me when outside, even in shade. Will try some other settings but not optimistic.

This is getting a big long, will add some other stuff and tidy up later, but please post any questions you might have.

There are a number of things that could be better, e.g. I'm not convinced the comfort is better on the S, but I couldn't be happier with my purchases, they are amazing devices.

I was really not sure whether I would get the Quest and actually put an order in almost a week later than S (I have a 1080TI in my PC after-all) and whilst I will continue to use the Rift S and look forward to the amazing content you can only get on Rift, I can see myself using the Quest far more regularly due to the convenience.

A few things:

  • Please be specific about what you did to fix your issue. It's a personal pet peeve of mine, but I hate looking for the solution to a problem, finding my exact problem listed, only to see the comment "Never mind, I tried something and it worked!" AARRGGHH!! What did you try? :-) Future readers searching on Inspiron or Max Q may thank you. Maybe even put it as a separate thread? It won't be highly upvoted, but it will be more searchable.

  • This is the HTC Link Box. It extends the HDMI and headset's USB port, giving you a bit more cable length and acts as a powered adapter (taking some power load off your system. Note that it does not come with an AC adapter so you'll need to buy one separately. You should find a link for a working adapter on the Amazon page.

  • You may be running into USB power management issues. Download Oculus Tray Tool and turn off the USB power management options. What may be happening is that the laptop is putting your USBs into low power mode to reduce heat, causing disconnects. Otherwise, perhaps you have a bad cable or headset? If it still happens, (a) check your BIOS/UEFI setup options to turn off any USB shutdown related settings, and (b) test your Rift on a friend's desktop system to see if it has the same problem.

  • I'm glad you're having fun! It's an amazing experience, and try to win over those skeptical friends of yours! Playing coop or even social experiences like watching a movie or talking in BigScreen are amazing.

  • A few games that seem great for people susceptible to motion sickness include:
SuperHot (you stand in one place)
Chronos (fixed camera position in a 3rd person adventure)
Eleven: Table Tennis (ping pong simulation, 1:1 physical movement only)
BigScreen (not a game, but lets you screen share with friends or join public rooms)
Pinball FX2 (if you like pinball this is a great sim)
I Expect You To Die (an "escape the room" game with great quality and humor)
Wilson's Heart (a stylized "film noir" story/puzzle/adventure game with fixed teleport positions)
The Unspoken (become a Dr. Strange-like mage in 1v1 or single player magic battles; I haven't played the single-player campaign but the PvP only uses teleport to fixed spots)
Star Trek Bridge Crew (you're seated on the bridge of the Enterprise)
Space Pirate Trainer (physical movement only; you're too busy dodging bullets to get sick)

That should give you a good start! Welcome to the future!

Edit: Some people swear by the VR Cover replacement facial interface, but I haven't used it. I've also heard great things about the WidmoVR cover - it covers the standard Rift facial interface with a replaceable soft cover that may make it more comfortable. You may want to check it out as a slightly cheaper alternative.

Here is a gift from me to you. I know you have the 3rd sensor but the rest of the information is good. This is my setup and what I recommend to friends and family. Check it out.

1st GET A THIRD SENSOR IF YOU WANT TRUE ROOMSCALE "they are on backorder at the moment"

2nd Get three of these for your sensors to make sure they can reach anywhere you want them too. USB 3.0 is better than 2.0 because the cameras run at a higher resolution and fps thereby increasing tracking and with your USB add-on cards this will be the perfect setup.: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0179MXKU8/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o05_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

3rd Get 2 of these to completely isolate all of you VR components from the sometimes janky unreliable USB ports on A LOT of motherboards that cannot supply enough power and/or bandwidth for all of the cameras and HMD to work properly I chose this card because it only has two ports and both of those ports work no matter if you plug in 2 sensors or 1 sensor and the HMD. The Inatek card DOES have issues for somewhere some ports work and others do not and are still only being able to run 2 sensors off the Inatek card and having to run the HMD and 3rd sensor off the motherboard. The Orico card just works and you don't have to think about experimenting with ports just plug everything into the two Orico cards in any configuration and go. Also use the default Windows drivers whether you go with the Inatek or Orico card only upgrade after trying the defaults drivers without success: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01AVSN2YG/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

4th This is optional. One of these for extending your HMD HDMI cable by 15ft for a total of 28ft: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B008D5EUD2/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o05_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

5th This repeater is required to make the HDMI cable above work, but with this repeater, the extension is flawless: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01GHL72XS/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

6th To extend the Rift HMD USB I use the USB 2.0 Active Extension Monoprice Repeater Cable that comes with the 3rd sensor it is 16ft long, works perfectly. Then I used a small piece of electrical tape every 6 inches from the HMD to the PC to make the extended HMD cable one piece leaving about 2 ft of cable loose at the end to be able to plug in wherever I want.

I did a lot of research bought the Inateck and Orico USB add-on cards, multiple active USB extensions, multiple different HDMI adapters and extensions of varying lengths, Display port to HDMI adapters, DVI to HMDI adapters, and did all the experimentation and testing required to make all this work. The list I listed above works every time on multiple systems in different environments, rooms, and households.
If you need clarification on anything and/or want more information, feel free to respond or message me. I will gladly help.

I would definitely avoid that hub. With 7 external ports the internal design will be two USB host controllers daisy chained together so 4 of those ports will at a minimum have to go through 3 host controllers to send data back to the PC. Very risky and prone to issues which will be explained below.

Apologies for the wall of text but it is all quite important to explain why USB hubs are not the best idea for a number of reasons. Only go the hub route if you have no other choice like you have a laptop and a PCI card if not an option. If you have a desktop and free PCI slots then grab one of the PCI cards listed at the end of this post.

USB 3.0 Hubs

The main concern with hubs is that there is an additional USB controller in the chain and if one of those controllers is not compatible then you might have tracking issues. The issue with compatibility is VR needs low latency and high bandwidth which is required for good tracking.

So you have something like this using a hub.

PC -> PCI Bus -> USB Controller -> Hub -> USB Controller -> Sensor.

I put together this image on the weekend to explain it to someone else - https://imgur.com/jI6Istl

If anything in that chain is sub standard you have issues. If you have good USB Controllers in that chain you wont see issues. Just remember a quality hub is only as good as the USB port on your PC you plug it into.

It is also recommended to get a powered USB hub if you have to go the hub route. People sometimes encounter not just a bandwidth/latency bottleneck but a power bottleneck. Importantly some PC USB ports can't push out enough power to power all the devices plugged into the hub. Get a powered hub to avoid this possibility.

Below are two brands Anker and Amazon Basics which are the hubs I commonly see people say have worked for the Rift. The 7 port one will have daisy chained USB controllers internally but people have recommended it so they must be good quality.

https://www.amazon.com/AmazonBasics-Port-2-5A-power-adapter/dp/B00DQFGH80

or

https://www.amazon.com/Anker-Aluminum-Portable-Adapter-Devices/dp/B00PBZX0OM

PCI Cards

Here are the cards that Oculus have recommended (I have personally tested the top two cards) .The blog posts at the end of this post might clear up why hubs are hit and miss for some people due to data/latency bottlenecks that might occur.

StarTek 2 port card (1 ASMedia controller) – Cheaper StarTek option that could be used for 2 sensors or a sensor and headset.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B013HT6K3Q

Supported Inatek 4 port card (1 Fresco controller) – Don't get the 5 or 7 port card as the design is not really suited for Rift sensors as it has daisy chained controllers in the design.

https://www.amazon.com/Inateck-Superspeed-Ports-PCI-Expansion/dp/B00B6ZCNGM

Use the Inatek for your two front facing cameras and nothing else. Plug your third or fourth USB 2.0 camera and Rift HMD into your motherboard.

Supported StarTek 4 port card (2 Controllers) – Optional middle tier PCI card solution which can run all four sensors or 3 sensors and HMD. Equivalent to two Inatek cards.

https://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00HJZE9VK

Supported StarTek 4 port card (4 Controllers) – Optional top of the range PCI card solution which can run all four sensors or 3 sensors and HMD. Equivalent to four Inatek cards.

https://www.amazon.com/Express-SuperSpeed-Adapter-Dedicated-Channels/dp/B00HJZEA2S

Both 4 port StarTek cards are pricey and a bit more than is actually required. You could achieve the same thing with 2x four port Inatek cards.

Here is another picture of the sensor itself:

http://imgur.com/VJgtyLj

Here is the gear that I used:

Light Stands (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00HNZJLG4/) - These things are great. Very easy to setup, very small base (can be expanded if you want, but the sensors are light and they seem very stable).

Mini Ball Heads (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01M07M9D4) - Make for easier adjustment and greater tilting.

USB Cables (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00C7SA21U/ - 10 ft, https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00C7S2FRE/ - 6 ft) - Passive were fine for the two sensors at that length.

Very happy to get these off my desk and higher up. I need to get my third sensor setup as well because the angle that they are pointing makes it tough to detect at the back of my play space (it's about 6 x 9).

Overall very happy with the setup and all the advice I received from this board. This is a really great community.

So you have four corners on the recessed ceiling (higher up), and four corners on the lower ceiling. I would almost prefer to put the cameras in the corners of the lower ceiling, because it would give a more straight-on view of the player/controllers. Each camera has a narrower viewing cone at extreme close proximity. The further from the main playspace they are, the more that cone has a chance to "spread out" and cover the actual playspace. In this case, you would draw your playspace with at least (2 ft) or (0.6 m) distance from each of the four walls, so people don't bash their knuckles at the borders.

However, you might not want your cameras to be further than (12 ft) or (3.6 m) apart from each other (for best tracking quality). I don't have a big enough room to run into this limit, so you may be fine with further spaced out cameras. If the lower ceiling corners are further apart than (12 ft) or (3.6 m), then you may want to put them in the recessed ceiling anyways. You can always ignore the Oculus Rift setup's warnings about camera spacing, by the way. In fact, with larger playspaces, the Oculus setup wizard will always complain. Don't worry about it.

Also, you might want to consider using this USB card. It can handle the throughput of all four cameras in USB 3.0 mode, if desired. You can downgrade any camera to USB 2.0 by simply running a USB 2.0 cable to that camera instead of 3.0. A passive USB 2.0 cable is fine for short runs, but consider an active USB 2.0 cable (like the one that comes in the box of an extra Rift camera) for longer runs. You should put your Rift headset in one of the motherboard's USB 3.0 ports (USB 2.0 might actually be fine), and then put all four cameras (you might only need three cameras) in the USB extension card.

You can search this subreddit for discussions on whether you want/need to have the cameras/headset on 3.0 or 2.0. I prefer to run everything at USB 3.0, but it may not be necessary.

For USB 3.0 cable runs that are less than 10 feet (say, those corners nearest to your computer tower), use these passive USB 3.0 cables. You're also going to want a passive USB 3.0 extension for your Rift headset.

For USB 3.0 cable runs that are more than 10 feet away, you should use an active USB 3.0 cable. This is necessary for cameras that are further away from your tower. Note that the cable I linked has an optional barrel port for a 12V power supply. You only need to power these cables if you're daisy-chaining two or more of them in a row (for runs longer than (33 ft) or (10 m)).

These CAT6 round cable clips should work well for cable routing, especially for the slightly thicker active USB 3.0 cables. These general-purpose adhesive cable clips work fine for runs of the thinner, passive USB cables, but you may have issues with the adhesive depending on your wall.

You'll want this HDMI extension cable for your Rift headset, to make use of the extra space. I've had a good experience with bunching the HDMI and USB Rift headset extensions together by using these lightweight Velcro ties. I have about a (10 ft) or (3 m) square playspace, so you may encounter different problems than me if your playspace is larger. I only have three cameras, and it works fine. Good luck in your setup, I'm sure whatever you do will work great!

I am also using the Bionik Mantis headphones originally made for the PSVR but they will clip onto the Rift S halo just fine (with some slight modification). I painted mine black using an enamel marker. Photos linked below...

Additional tips:

  1. You can add some more comfortable ear-pads to them for about $7.99. They help a bit with the sound quality and feel better. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00BUL4VVM/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o09_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
  2. Black Enamel Paint Marker - I got gloss but I also believe they sell matte as well. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B008CVNTL6/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
  3. If you are not using a good EQ for your windows devices, get the free APO equalizer app and you can tweak the headphone sounds even more. https://sourceforge.net/projects/equalizerapo/

Overall they do not sound as good as the original Rift, but much better than the built in open air headphones. Plus the convenience of having them mounted on the headset is great.

  1. If you have trouble with the lenses fogging, Quick Spit seems to work wonders. A lot comes out per spray, though, so it's best to hold the Rift upside down while spraying it to avoid fluid running into the screen area. Polish the excess off with lens cloth.

  2. Yes, they say that the "A" lenses are proper for people with 20/20. But the "B" lenses present no problems for most people and allow you to dial the screen in closer to your eyes without brushing your eyelashes. The closer the screen, the wider the FOV.

  3. While the Rift technically draws a little more power than the USB spec provides, I've yet to encounter a USB port that couldn't power it. If you pick up the proper cable you can ditch the wall wart and have one less wire to trip over.

  4. Overwhelmingly, it's better to run at 60 FPS (or whatever Hz you're running at if you're overclocking the display) with lower graphics settings than 59 FPS at best graphics settings. Because each frame misses its target refresh and has to be displayed on the following one, missing your target refresh rate by even 1 FPS will drop the number of displayed frames by half and double your latency. Yes, when it says 59FPS, you're only seeing 30FPS. And that's a MUCH bigger deal in a HMD than on a monitor.

  5. Even though the screen is 1280x800, running at higher resolutions actually makes a striking difference in visual quality. Why? Downsampling effectively acts as high-end anti-aliasing. For this reason, text is often much more readable when running at higher resolutions.

  6. If you don't mind a little risk (and your machine is capable of driving the required frame rates), it's possible to run most DK1s at up to 72Hz without obvious distortion (and up into the low 80s if you're bolder and more tolerant of visual artifacts). The reduction in blur and improvement in responsiveness is striking. These settings worked fabulously for me in Win7 and stock Win 8, but using them after an upgrade to 8.1 went very, very poorly for me. Note that you must either extend your desktop or make the DK1 your primary monitor in clone mode for it to work. I had to delete the stock resolution settings after adding the custom ones before Windows would allow me to select into the higher refresh rates (in the advanced properties for the DK1 "monitor").

  7. If you love trippy stuff, SoundSelf is something else. You'll need a microphone.

  8. Sometimes it's nice just to mellow out in the Rift. Blue Marble is perfect for this because dropping your own music (converted to OGG) into the music folder lets you select the music, and the speed at which you drift away from earth will be timed to the length of the music. Drop "Shine on You Crazy Diamond I-IX" by Pink Floyd in the folder, kick back, and spend the first 5 minutes of the 26 minute trip drifting slowly backwards out of the aurora borealis watching meteorites skip off the atmosphere. It's heavenly.

Although Robo Recall was a bit too arcadey for my tastes, it's still very fun and free, but Lone Echo... omfg, Lone Echo is amazing. Absolute must-play.

I also recommend Wilson's Heart, Obduction, and Robinson (which just got Touch support!) if you are into VR adventure games.

If you are into racing, and have all the right gear (seat + wheel + pedals), check out Dirt Rally and Project CARS 2, as well. They are incredible. I've noticed that people don't tend to have nausea problems with racing games when they are using a seat and wheel.

If you are ready to step things up, Elite: Dangerous is the one VR experience that keeps me coming back more than any other (Dirt Rally comes in second). You can easily spend a lot of money on it, though. Add a HOTAS setup, Voice Commander, and a VC voice pack, and you've added $300 to your purchase price... but once you do, it's no longer a game... you are genuinely living in space. I don't even really think of it as a game anymore. It's a second life. It's real.

Oh and as others have mentioned... don't leave your Rift near a window. Those damn fresnel lenses can damage your screen like a magnifying glass focusing on an ant... and Oculus will NOT repair it, not even for a fee.

Also, I strongly recommend mounting your cameras to a wall or ceiling. These are the mounts I use and recommend: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001D49TU4/

I've found just about any USB3 extender cable works, but apparently, some people's motherboards don't output enough power for longer cables. If you run into that problem, use a USB3 or USB-C (if your mobo has one) based, independently powered hub. I've found you can get away with 2 cameras running over a single powered hub connected to a USB3 port, or 4 cameras connected to a hub connected to a USB-C port.

Here's the USB3 hub I recommend to everyone with power issues: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00VDVCQ84/

Edit: Oh, and if you already have Alien: Isolation, there's now a mod that restores the game's original VR support for CV. Keep in mind, it still has plenty of rough edges and is gamepad only, but playing through that in VR is one my most cherished gaming memories.

u/Joimz · 2 pointsr/oculus

I recently picked up the Thrustmaster T.16000M FCS HOTAS to replace my Thrustmaster T-Flight HOTAS X. I would recommend the T.16000M setup over the T-Flight mostly because the throttle and stick are completely separate, which is easy to appreciate when you've fumbled around with the T-Flight's awkward design when it's separated. The T.16000M also feels a bit more robust and having more buttons/options on the throttle (especially in VR) is a huge plus. All that being said, I spent a lot of hours in Elite with the T-Flight and you can't really go wrong with it. I fondly recall the shit eating grin I had on my face the first time I throttled up and instantly felt more 'connected' with my ship. Cheers.

u/mourning_lemon · 2 pointsr/oculus

The best entry level HOTAS for Elite is (in my opinion) the T16000m setup. I've had that one, an X56, a T.Flight and a logitech flight stick and the 16000m is definitely my favorite. Plenty of buttons, pretty good ergonomics, affordable, and expandable (you can add a second stick and reverse the grips for your other hand as well as rudder peddles, though i don't actually like the ones that match the 16000m). It also has the same HALL sensors as the pro level Warthog flight stick. Elite in VR is awesome by the way

EDIT: you dont actually need a HOTAS for Elite though it is recommended by most people. I played like 300+ hours of Elite on an Xbox one pad. It isn't perfect but it works pretty well considering Elite has console support already so they have put thought into the pad controls. Also you can add a chatpad for extra binds. o7

I use a Vive Link Box to extend the headset. I like this approach because it does not really matter what cables you use because it's an active repeater with its own psu and it's made with VR in mind.

I use it as a breakout box to connect my puter in the bedroom to my Rift in the living room. I'm also using the displayport (dp to mini dp cable) connection on the Link, freeing up my limited hdmi for my projector. It's nice to be able to plug into an dedicated ports in an attractive component sitting nicely on a shelf whenever I want to use it.

Link Box

For sensors I found the ugreen active 3.0 extensions recommended on this sub to work very well (meaning they do not revert to USB2.0).

Get real Eneloop. Eneloop Pro is not Eneloop. It's a generic NiMH cell with the word "Pro" in the name and the price jacked up enormously. Eneloop Pro is only good for 500 charge cycles, but real Eneloop is good for 2100 charge cycles. You have to buy Eneloop Pro 5 times to match Eneloop. I recommend you get these ones (make sure your battery specifications match the packaging in this photo):

HDMI - https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B0777SCQZX?psc=1&ref=ppx_pop_mob_b_pd_title

Seems to be pretty good. People also seemed to have success with using the Vive extension box (https://www.amazon.com/HTC-Vive-Link-Box-pc/dp/B01LXR6DKV/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?keywords=vive+box&qid=1550992342&s=gateway&sr=8-1)

I don’t know about that far. Maybe with active, it’s like 2am for me so I’ll take a better look at your-setup tomorrow and see if I have any suggestions. One question, do you use the oculus built in mic and audio?

Edit: oh looks like you have hdmi boosted from your cable description so you prob don’t need the HDMI repeater.

If you're going to share the rift with glasses owners, I recommend screen protectors. Once scratched it can never be replaced/fixed.

These fit really well:
https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B00SJ22D5Q

You could probably fit the 43mm versions too, but this provides enough coverage and I cannot see the edge of the protector when playing.

Also, I generally wear contacts but find my eyes dry out and get itchy in the rift. I actually prefer playing with glasses. Buy these:

https://www.zennioptical.com/p/metal-alloy-full-rim-frame-with-spring-hinges/5500?skuId=550021

They look retarded but they're basically free and it's like they're hand-crafted for the rift. Absolutely perfect fit. "Feels like I'm wearing nothing at all, nothing at all, nothing at all..."

u/baicai18 · 1 pointr/oculus

I was just reading another thread and decided to buy this just today. I had been looking at the x52 for a while, but it's like double the price of this, and have been hearing bad things about them after being bought out by madcatz.

This Thrustmaster was also designed together with frontier, so I'm guessing it should work pretty well? (will find out Friday) I hear the buttons don't feel as nice, as they're not mechanical except for the trigger, but apparently the sensor accuracy is better. Not really sure which is better better, but just giving you another option.

I'm coming from a T.Flight Hotas X and voice attack, and that's already working great, but I can't find a good way to mount the T.Flight, so looking for an upgrade.

Voice attack is amazing, and I honestly don't think I can go back to not using it. Like someone else said, anything not combat related I don't need buttons anymore, which was a big problem with my T.Flight

I'm still waiting for my Rift actually, it arrives in another week, so not sure yet. But if you'd like I can report back when I get everything setup.

10m Active USB.3.0 Extensions (for front sensors)

3m USB 3.0 Extension (for HMD)

3m HDMI Extension (for HMD)

HDMI to DP Adapter (For GPU)

USB 3.0 PCI-E Card (to power the 10m active extensions)

I've read good things about all of these, with a lot of success stories. Hopefully all goes well on my end.

u/knexfan0011 · 1 pointr/oculus

I bought this pack, it had 4 protectors in it iirc.

Just clean the lenses with a micro fiber cloth to make sure there is not dust on there.
If there is, it will create a bubble. I have one on mine, but it is not visible while wearing the rift, so I've decided to just leave it as it is.
The dust could damage the lens though if it gets pressed into the lens, so it would be best if there wasn't any dust.
I haven't tried it, but maybe warming up the protector a little before applying it could help it fit better.
You'll need to work the edge of the protector with your fingers for a few minutes until it stops peeling off, the protector is flexible enough to adjust to the curvature with some work.

u/psmfthrowaway · 2 pointsr/oculus

I posted this a few weeks back but I wouldn't look at the price of a 3rd sensor so much as the price of a 3rd sensor and a backup set of touch controllers.

https://www.amazon.com/Oculus-Touch/dp/B01BHMS88A/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1503957957&sr=8-1&keywords=oculus+touch+controller

Click into the additional sellers area and you will find plenty of sellers with good feedback scores selling touch box sets for $75-85 tax free and you get a third sensor in the box. depending on how aggressively you play VR, I've traded paint a handful of times with my wall already and its only a amtter of time until I break a controller so for $80 when I bought mine it was a great deal.

USB extenders usually have more luck at the 10-15' range, especially if they are active. My two front sensors have 15' active USB 3.0 extension cables and they work perfectly fine.

For my headset I used a 10' HDMI passive extender and a 10' passive USB 3.0 extender. I didn't want to go past 10' for the headset in case I had problems, plus the additional 10' was more than enough.

For reference, this is the HDMI extender I used specifically (note amazon canada):

Depending on your computer placement you might need a usb3 extension cable for one of your sensors, your 3rd sensor you purchased comes with one but I needed a second one for my other sensor due to placments. This is also option but I grabbed a 10ft HDMI and 10FT usb3 extension cable fro my headset as well to help give me better range with more slack. Also some camera mounts for mounting your sensors on the walls helps alot.

For referance these are what I ordered, im in Canada so these are all Canadian links so you may need to find your local equivalent

I've ordered some of these Command Picture Hanging strips and a couple security camera mounts that I'm going to try to use with the Rift's sensor(s).

The picture hanging strips should allow for moving the second sensor from one corner to another if necessary. E.g. game "A" works best with two front mounted sensors but game "B" works best with opposite corner mounted sensors... In theory I should be able to detach a camera and reattach it in the desired location without much fuss and without making a lot of holes in the wall.

I'm running a similar setup to what you're looking at, just a bit shorter and less expensive. I couldn't see the need for the extra five feet.

Some zip ties, heat shrink and cable sleeving keeps it nice and tidy. I keep it clipped to the side of my desk with a binder clip to keep tension off the back of my computer. It also makes it nice and easy to disconnect when I'm not using it.

Other people have reported having good luck with the Vive box.

https://www.amazon.com/HTC-Vive-Link-Box-pc/dp/B01LXR6DKV/

If you go that route you'll also need to find a power supply and you still need to find cables.

I didn't have any luck with the Insignia cable from BestBuy. It's seems pretty hit or miss.

Hygiene will be an issue, nothing to do with trust. Some people sweat in sitting games. Some people are known to wear makeup on their face - in a variety of skin tones, sometimes with a bit of glitter! But, simply buy a waterproof VRCover and stock alcohol wipes (and make sure nobody wipes the lenses with them.)
https://www.amazon.com/Oculus-Interface-Standard-Version-Replacement/dp/B01MQZVF6K/

The receptionist or whoever is closest will have to do a bit of tech support. Just make sure they get "training time" to enjoy VR themselves.

u/unclexbenny · 4 pointsr/oculus

Get lens protectors. I wear glasses and had the same fear, got the 42mm Healingshield protectors that have been recommended elsewhere on this subreddit and they fit perfectly. Quick to install and if they get damaged/dirty over time, they're easy to replace. You really can't see them when you're wearing the Rift, I tried looking to the sides with it on my face and you can't find the transition between the protector and where it ends at all. I would say these are a must have for those with glasses and just a good general safety precaution for anyone else.

Carabiners are useful. Clip one to a back belt loop on a pair of jeans/etc, then loop the cable through it. It goes a long way towards keeping the cable out of the way of your feet. It also cuts down on the amount of "tugging" you feel on your head as you pull the cable along behind you, which makes it feel a little less immersion-breaking.

> Do I need to get some extension cables to allow more freedom of movement further away from my PC? If so, which ones?

I think so, assuming you have the play space. Oculus has some recommended cables. I bought these 10ft extensions on Amazon and they have served me well with quite a few different headsets with no issues - HDMI and USB

I have provided the links to the products I use.

If you think you're going to be sweating quite a bit (perhaps because of beat saber) I recommend a different facepad by VR Cover.

Like TOO_FUTURE said before me, definitely set up a ceiling rig so you dont have to worry about cables running around the floor.

Lastly, you might want to think about investing in a 3rd Oculus sensor. Having that 360 degree coverage and not having to worry about facing forward all the time will make your VR experience that much better.

I have also crafted a solution for the keychain HMD pull issue, and will be posting pics and instructions when I get them prepared.

The room is 11'x12'
No bed however there is a couch which takes up some valuable space.
I used wall bushings that I sawed partially in half with a dremel so that I could slip the cable into it without having to cut the USB head off. I also had to soak the bushing is boiling water to soften it up a bit for bending. It makes the hole in the ceiling very clean. The hole itself was drilled just wide enough to get the USB head through. I'll post some pics soon of the wires. :)

It might be! I will say though I just got that powered USB3 hub recommended by people (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B014ZQ07NE), and I went from having to split my headset and 2 sensors across my motherboards USB2 and a 5-port Inateck USB3 PCI-E card to now having my headset and 2 sensors plugged into the hub, and the hub itself is plugged into the Inateck, and everything works great. I think it really just depends on people's particular setups/motherboards/USB.

edit: Actually I just double checked. I have a single sensor and the headset plugged into the hub, which is plugged into the Inateck, and my second sensor is also plugged into the Inateck. Before that powered hub, I wasn't able to have all three plugged into the Inateck itself without errors. So in my particular case, it definitely seems like it was a power issue.

If you have the room/ability, I'd mount the sensors on the ceiling or corners of the room. I got two (VideoSecu 2 Pack 2-6 inch Metal Wall Ceiling Mounts Adjustable Pan Tilt Video Camera Mounting Brackets https://www.amazon.com/dp/B001D49TU4/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apip_bYfm6J1rX8VQH) to mount them cheaply and securely, and three (Cable Matters SuperSpeed USB 3.0 Type A Male to Female Active Extension Cable 5 Meters/16.4 Feet https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00DMFB5OK/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apip_z9Cm45OtYiwYz). Purchasing a third sensor nets you a USB extension cable, and I also got an HDMI extension cable to give my Rift some extra room. Sorry for all the links! The ceiling setup gives me pretty flawless tracking.

The Best Buy vr headset cable didn't work for my rift so I pulled the cables apart and used the 3.0 extension for my second sensor since I was out of the return period. Works perfect for that.

Here's what I got for my headset and the only things I'd recommend for headset extensions:

hdmi cable

hdmi repeater

usb 3 cable

inateck usb 3 card

The usb extender cable wouldn't work with anything besides the usb 3 card for me so I would say just buy it too. Though, I can only plug 2 things into the usb card.

These 4 things solved all my problems though. You can roll the dice on the best buy cord, but there's a decent chance you'll have to buy this stuff after and this way you get 15ft of extension instead of 9.

I tested them both last night and they worked. I had a random passive 2.5m usb 2.0 extender sitting around and it worked to extend my sensor last night as well.

Yes, I stayed up too late perfecting my set up before my controllers arrive today..

u/bifurk8 · 2 pointsr/oculus

I can't comment on the effectiveness of my mounting yet, since I've still just got one sensor until tomorrow - but I've mounted mine about 7 feet high on the wall (just above door frame height). When testing potential mounting spots, I found that any higher and tracking would get wobbly or that the Rift sensor setup would complain about being too far from the sensor.

I used these security camera mounts from Amazon (they sell them in both two packs and single packs, so I ended up buying three total). I like these because they can extend out from the wall with the included extensions and I needed that extra length because I have a really deep desk that would occlude tracking if they didn't stick out so far. Note that these mounts are probably too heavy to use with command strips, they really do need to be screwed in (I tested them with command strips just while I was trying them in different positions and three large command strips did hold the mount+sensor during testing, but didn't seem like it would hold reliably forever).

When testing different positions, I used DeskScene to visualize and test the tracking area. Note that it currently only works with one sensor, but the developer has said he's working on adding support for additional sensors.

I think if you have room for them on your desk, your desk doesn't occlude them when you crouch, and you can step far enough back from your desk when playing to be in their sweet spot, there's no special reason to mount them, though.

u/lch6257 · 2 pointsr/oculus

Had same issue setting up third sensor and even after I did after much fiddling I had lag and stuttering in vr. My rift is using a gaming laptop so ymmv, but my tracking setup and issue was 100% resolved by adding an anker 7 port powered usb hub and moving the headset and two sensors to the hub. Roomscale tracking is now nearly perfect. You could also add a powered PCIE usb card in a tower with good results. Search this sub and you will see it is nearly always a usb power issue with adding that third sensor.

One more thing, stand at a diagonal angle when in oculus sensor setup as all three sensors need to see the touch.

Here is the hub I use:

I use the Cable Matters DP and USB cablse. Sorry my memory failed me, actually I just got the 1.8m (6 feet) it seems. I forgot I got a shorter one for the Rift S (had much longer 15' HDMI ones for cv1). The included cable on the Rift S being longer made this all I needed to reach all parts of my play space. I really just like to have something between the headset and my video card ports, and an easy access to unplug/replug right next to the couch, so these work perfect for me.

I did a quick search and found some folks talking about using at least 10' extension and maybe up to 5m, but couldn't find a link to a specific cable (I only looked for about 1 minute, I'm sure if you dust off your Google-fu you can find it if you really need one that long, I would imagine such a cable would include an active repeater and perhaps get kinda pricey).

amazon.com specifically mentions the two as preorder bonuses, requiring a code to be sent out.

E: Oculus blog says DaB free for Touch, no mention of preordering.

E: VRSC bundled with all preorders.

Blog for Touch pre-order launch also says

Plus, all pre-orders (including retail pre-orders) come bundled with The Unspoken and VR Sports Challenge so you can cast spells and throw touchdown passes on day one."

Some of the higher level players swear by kb+m for pvp and combat. They play flat, but it is what it is considering. If you can get used to kb+m or controller, you'll be fine.

However this is the HOTAS I own, and I would recommend it any day. Elite has preset bindings for a good selection of HOTAS already, and this is no exception.

Should do, but otherwise this doesn't break the bank and is fantastic. Two in the controllers and two charging, ready to be switched out at any time.

I have this hub. I just checked with it and nothing is different. I just tried all combinations. Hub plugged into a 3.1 port on my mobo and the rift plugged into both the charging port as well as the rift plugged into any other port. Hub plugged into the 3.0 port on my renesas extension and the rift plugged into both the charging port as well as it plugged into any other port. No difference.

I guess one of my last options is to get an inatek port. Hoping best buy is open tomorrow and they have one.

u/OziOziOiOi · 1 pointr/oculus

I bought 2 meter HDMI and usb3(x2) extensions, and have their 3 ends strapped into a neat bundle, this is then secured discretely to the leg of my desk (I use velcro to keep things portable). I then have one of these attached about 60cm from the plug end of the rift's cable that gets clipped onto a drawer handle when the rift is plugged in and in use to protect the rift cables from being yanked out (kids, pets, clumsiness). When not in use, I have the cables coiled under my desk or inside the same old 15" neoprene laptop cover that I keep my rift in. This then either sits on my desk or is kept out of the way on the floor, propped up against the wall/desk (or under my desk).

edit: I have a big, solid, bankers-type desk. YMMV...

I just finished playing 15 levels of Brookhaven Experiment (amazing game), 3 sensors is all you need. I have two in the front corners on tri-pods roughly 5 feet from the ground and 8 feet apart angled toward the center of the play space and one rear center mounted 6" down from a 8' celing with this mount approximately 13 feet from the front. I know this isn't the recommended setup, I plan to try a few setups and decide what I like best. I had a 4th sensor on order but I decided to cancel it since 3 sensors works so well. My play space is roughly 9' x 9' right now, the only time I notice any goofiness is when I'm facing one of the rear corners and slowly turning, the handoff from one sensor to the next makes my pistol move in or out about 3-4 inches. It's not noticeable when I'm playing the game, just when I'm slowly rotating to test tracking.

Need more info on what your existing Rift setup is like (I'm guessing you only have the Rift headset with 1 sensor?).

If you only have the Rift headset and 1 sensor, then buying the "Touch Controller Bundle" will include 2 Touch controllers (Left and Right hands) and 1 additional sensor. Thus giving you a total of 2 sensors. But yes, to use Touch controllers, you must have at least 2 sensors.

Here are some Touch Controller bundles

Check out VTOL VR. It is completely playable with only the Touch controllers.

That being said, DCS is tons of fun in VR. I use a Thrustmaster T16000M stick and throttle which works great with most of the modules.

I bought a pair of these off Amazon. They arrived yesterday and they seem like they are going to work perfectly for mounting up on the wall for my cameras. Comes in a 2-pack.

Actually, I think this is the better deal unless you plan to use these for more than a few years:

And if you want the best without regard for money, this is probably it:

For 2 meters or less almost any decent cable will work, bigger than that you need active cables and hdmi repeater.

These are the ones I use and they work perfectly (6ft, 2m)

If this is the facial interface you got, then yes they work amazingly together. I have this exact face plate and a pair of WidmoVR lenses and you will be entirely satisfied! The WidmoVR lenses are amazing! That face plate comes with a nice cloth cover that totally makes up for the stock foam that scratches the shit out of your face. You can also remove the cover and stick with the nylon foam, which is nice and comfy too, but if you get hot fast it can become a little uncomfortable.

You really need a HOTAS for flight sims in VR. This is a good price. It will be the best thing you ever bought.

u/FredH5 · 2 pointsr/oculus

The first one comes with an Xbox Controller and the second one comes with the Touch Controllers, which are the best VR controllers on the market.

You want the Touch controllers but you could buy the first item and buy the Touch controllers separate for $100. That way you get an Xbox controller and you save $40.

This is the link for the Touch controllers: https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B01BHMS88A

These are the mounts we used, and a lot cheaper than the ones linked on the wiki: OdiySurveil (TM) Metal CCD Security Housing Mount Bracket for CCTV Camera

We also bought this 3.0 USB Anker port as I was under the impression we would need it and it was recommended on a thread. We actually ended up not needing it, but we still have it available in case we need to free up usb slots. I would double check on other threads that it does indeed work before just taking my word for it, as I haven't tested it yet personally

USB extensions

I also had a bit of confusion when reading through Oculus' guide to room-scaling about what to buy to extend my range, so I though I'd at least share what I bought for three sensors:

u/chelsfc2108 · 2 pointsr/oculus

I am using this combo HDMI/USB 3.0 extension cable (10 feet). Don't need to worry about passive/active stuff, just plug and play. I have been using these for 3 weeks now and they are flawless.

My 3 sensor setup is and has been working flawless for me. My system is an Asus maximus viii hero and an Nvidia GTX 1080. My two front cameras are on USB3 both on extension cables from Amazon (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00P0ES0YE/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1) and the back camera is on USB2 with monoprice extension cable. All sensors are mounted from my drop ceiling.

u/Syke408 · 1 pointr/oculus

It seems on the oculus setup guide I can use a 2.0 extension which I already have so I think I'll be okay. Thank you.

u/SharkOnGames · 2 pointsr/oculus

This HDMI extension is the one officially recommended for the headset by the Oculus wiki. Note that it says 6ft extension max, not sure if any length beyond that will work or not.

Be sure to buy a matching length USB 3.0 if you extend the headset HDMI. Apparently the one I added to my wish list on amazon has disappeared and I cannot figure out how the heck to find the oculus wiki page with extension suggestions, so that's frustrating me right now. lol

EDIT: Found it, this is the USB 3.0 6ft extension to match the 6ft HDMI extension: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00C7S2FRE/_encoding=UTF8?coliid=I3MBEYWUWT48H&colid=1YO6HWUKO56VO

u/alpharesearch · 14 pointsr/oculus

Yes, I have all my cables extended.

Here are the USB cables I use for the sensor camera and HMD USB connections and [here is the HMDI coupler I use] (http://smile.amazon.com/Cable-Matters-Plated-Female-Coupler/dp/B00CJHXY0U?ie=UTF8&psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s00) plus a generic HDMI 6 feet cable from Monoprice I ordered some time ago (plus my 970 has a mini to norm HDMI dongle too). There is a USB extender cord packaged with the Rift that I use for the Xbox dongle.
Looks like all the dongles and extra cables work just fine.

I routed all the cables to the front so I can easily plug and unplug everything without crawling under the desk and scooting the PC around...

u/p_light · 1 pointr/oculus

I'd try the amazon basic HDMI cord. It's very thick, which is technically undesirable for other applications, but it's a very good thing for VR as it lets you move the data further
The amazon basic USB 3.0 extension is also cheap and works. But length is more of an issue with USB than HDMI, so keep that in mind when ordering. For instance, if you want to do a set up with longer than 10ft HDMI, I'd use a USB 2.0 extension or alternatively find an active solution so the USB 3.0 works.

EDIT: https://www.amazon.com/AmazonBasics-High-Speed-Female-Extension-Cable/dp/B01D5H91KE?th=1 (I used the 10 ft, and have no problems, YMMV)
https://www.amazon.com/AmazonBasics-Extension-Cable-Male-Female/dp/B00NH12O5I (same as above, remember the USB stuff is finicky and depends on the PSU on your computer. But I'd say under 10 ft --this is 9.8ft-- is fine)

u/SalvagedCabbage · 5 pointsr/oculus

I, and multiple other people, have found great success using wall powered USB hubs. Zero problems with USB power or bandwith post using one of these.

However, it will be VERY obvious to you when you need the third sensor. You'll find yourself frequently facing the direction without sensors and visual glitches everywhere, trying to turn around and deal with whatever in game objective you were dealing with previously.

I'm running a gigabyte z170 motherboard, and a GTX 1080ti reference card. All 3 sensors + headset are into motherboard, no expansion card needed for me.

u/Vagrant_Charlatan · 1 pointr/oculus

I don't get how so many people are able to plug 3 (or 4!) sensors into a powered hub. I have this Anker one that was recommended in other threads and I get the USB controller bandwidth alert when I have more than 2 sensors or the HMD + 2 sensors connected. I've tried plugging the hub into the motherboard and into the Inateck card.

edit: wonder if my USB 3.0 ports are not running at full speed like in this thread, will check when I get home.
