After a brief love affair with a Gibson SG Special, I'm back to my cheaper, better sounding guitar, which I want to make great again!
What i've done so far:

  1. Replaced pickups to Antiquity II
  2. Replaced bridge to a Staytrem

Tuning stability is now decent, though not great (a single use of the trem arm can throw it out of tune by a few cents).
The neck feels really good and looks great, except for the squier logo, which i'm growing accustomed to. Not completely negating a neck change, maybe a mexican classic player's.
The pickup selector is sometimes crackling so i'm taking this as a motivation to fully replace the electronics with better ones.

Currently thinking to do the following:
  3. Setup the guitar to go with 11 gauge strings, for better tuning stability
  4. Replace the electronics - found this kit: https://www.amazon.com/Fender-Vintage-Jazzmaster-Wiring-Kit/dp/B00P2ZDBQ8/ref=sr_1_2?crid=2NEDVL1FCZSMQ&keywords=920d+jazzmaster&qid=1575134171&sprefix=920d+jaz%2Caps%2C334&sr=8-2
    Also this kit looks nice:

  5. Replace the tremolo tailpiece, not sure if I should and which one I should get.

    Any advice is welcome, thanks!

Scotch-brite scour pads are the best thing going for heavily poly'd necks. You can just rub one up and down the length of the neck a few times and it will take a very fine layer of the polish off, leaving you with a beautiful satin neck without the worry of scratching or taking too much finish off. Best part is that you can use a proper polish to bring it back up to shine if you ever wanted to.

Fender Pure Vintage ‘65 Jazzmaster Pickup Set

They’re really good for the price. They don’t come with the foam you need to adjust them correctly (the stock picks are a lot taller than standard JM pickups) so be sure to get some weather stripping from Home Depot before you install.

The upgrade is totally worth it, the output is a lot lower, but they sound really great!

it can be overwhelming, to say the least. This is the wiring scheme.

Here's a basic kit on Amazon, but I wanted to be as accurate as possible and got the parts from several sources. The caps are different in this kit, as well as the 1 Meg pots (kit has split shaft, American Jags use solid shaft).

Here's a full part list, most you can grab at guitarpartsresource.com

Rhythm Circuit

.01UF Cap (005-4504-000)

1 Meg Mini Pot Volume (005-4457-000)

2x Roller knobs (005-4455-000)

Pickup Selector

3x Switchcraft Switch (001-7079-000)

.003uF Cap (005-4509-049)

Control Plate

2x 1 Meg Solid Shaft (001-9066-000)

2x Skirted knob (001-9455-000)

56k OHM CARBON RESISTOR (R-I56K)

AV65 pickups were cheapest on Amazon. The AVRI trem plate is also better, but I felt no need to upgrade it.

"Cowabunga! The Surf Box Set" and "Surf Age Nuggets" have some really great songs on them. With Nuggets getting pretty gritty and garagey. Some of the bands are terrible, like you can tell they picked up instruments a few months ago as they go through a guitar scale... but some of the songs are really special. The thing is that there aren't too many super complete albums from the same bands since there are so many flashes in the pan, but see what you think.

If I’m not mistaken, I think any regular Jazzmaster pickguard will work just fine. Here’s one on Amazon. A couple reviews say that it fit a Squier JM just fine.

I thought teles and strats were technically offset guitars... to answer what you're asking though Troy Van Leeuwen was a big part of it. Also Fu Manchu put a jaguar on the cover of one of their albums and the guitar alone was a statement of how cool they are. Said album cover I used to teach guitar lessons at a shop that had a modern player jaguar and I really liked the way it played and sounded. I usually play gibson style guitars and that modern player model has a lot of gibson/epiphone qualities to it. I bought a modern player jaguar online on Sunday and I'm very excited for it to show up.

Can confirm /u/whatever_dad 's post , I purchased this and put it on my J Mascis Squier, very close fit, no drilling, and inexpensive. The only thing I'd say is that the rhythm circuit knobs are buried a bit since they mount the same and you're essentially switching from a one ply to a 3 ply pickguard but I don't mind it at all. It keeps me from adjusting them accidentally. Since the gold pickguard was insulated I bought copper tape and insulated the new one, though I don't know if I really needed to.
I got the mint one and it was lighter than the photos on Amazon but looks great with the "vintage white" of the body. I took my gold pickguard off because I didn't like the thunk it made when I hit it with my pick.

I have a Gator case for my Jagmaster. Fits perfectly, no room for it to move around, and it's wicked tough. Survived two long plane flights after being forced to gate-check it, no problem at all. Locks are sturdy, hinges are nice and solid. It is very heavy, more so even than the guitar, I think. Carrying it across two terminals at Dulles was an enormous workout. I would recommend it, for sure.

EDIT: Replaced the ProGuitarShop link (out of stock) with one from Amazon.

$45 solution

This thing sounds really good with single coils pickups - a little too dark for my taste with humbuckers.

Used 1200 then 1500 and instead of clear coat I used this. Worked wonderfully and slick as snot on a glass eyeball. https://www.amazon.com/Kiwi-Express-Shine-Sponge-Brown/dp/B00GT2S45Q

I will look into it then. The collet wouldn't grab the trem arm at all until I took it apart and closed it with a wrench. It's still a little wonky though. Shame since everything else about this guitar is fantastic.

Would this be the one right here?
