I mostly ride at night. You may think I go overboard here, but drivers here are legendarily bad. I have a bright orange windbreaker with reflective stripe (think like a pit crew jacket) but I only wear that in cool weather, which is a ways off for me still. Here's what I wear (aside from trying to wear light-colored T-shirts):

1.) Bright headlamp on my helmet. Good to view the road, has a red light on the back of the helmet on the battery pack to help make me visible from behind. I also find it very useful to make sure cars see you - if you're approaching an intersection and you're not sure, just glance at the driver. When you do, you're flashing a head-height light in his face, more or less straight on level (don't stare and blind him, obvs.). He'll see you.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07PWB4R7R/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

2.) One of these little dinky flashing red bike lights clipped on the back of my backpack:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07F635KH4/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

3.) I also am pretty happy with the DIY supplemental light rig I've made for my OneWheels, it greatly increases the board's "headlights". I plan to post a tutorial here soon for anyone interested. Cheap, durable, bright, and easy semi-permanent install (you don't need to take them off the board to charge them. But if you need to take them off, it's not hard to do.)

4.) You could also look at various reflective stickers/rail wraps/sidekicks for the board itself. OWArmor makes some - I have a circular sticker that just lines the rim of the wheel on both my boards. Float Life put out some pretty neat reflective Sidekicks recently, but they may be sold out now.

5.) If I didn't already have a helmet, I'd consider this: black by day, reflective silver by night:

OP here. So I used these studs on a Hoosier 5.5 with a OW+: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01HXA1Z3K/

We got about 6" of freshies today and I felt like a dweeb taking the bus to go shred. So my goal this evening was to see if I can make the ~1mile trip to my local gondola for some snowboarding without too much drama. Made it to an adjacent pub and back, so I consider that a win :)

Takeaways:

  • It does impact the ride a bit and makes the wheel feel like it rolls edge to edge a bit easier and doesnt like to lock-in to the flat center as well. On a Hoosier which is already a fairly round tire, its a bit unstable feeling on clean pavement. Takes a few minutes to get used to but honestly wasn't that bad if your a decent rider.
  • The biggest impact was on the battery life. The trip down was a little under a mile with around 150' elevation drop drop. I did run into a buddy on the way down and chatted while riding around flat-ground for ~5 to 10 minutes... but still, less than a mile and mostly DOWN HILL put me around 80% battery when I got to the pub. The ride back up was shorter, about 0.6mi according to the app, but a bit steeper. This consumed another 32%. So yea, don't expect any long trips on a studded tire! A couple miles on an OW+ is probably pushing it.

Overall, performance was pretty good! I hit a lot of hardpack, some slush, some ice, and even a bit of clean pavement and it handed well. On the steep climbs, I tried to take the gnarliest path and it never slipped. I was mostly nervous trying to keep it slow down hill and worrying about it slipping on the descent, but never felt any slides at all. Speeds were kept pretty low - I topped out at 12mph and that felt fast. Guess whose not waiting for the gnarbus any more this season? THIS GUY :D

I hold one of these in a free hand - I find that it is preferable to a fixed light anywhere on the board or my helmet, as I can use it precisely and proactively like a search light. When compared to a helmet-mounted light, holding it lower to the ground often casts shadows that give you a better "relief map" of the terrain ahead. It is insanely bright on the max setting and has a good spread:

I can recommend
Wrist guards:
https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B00BFPH19M/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

They have saved me twice and work as advertised. Also, I can fit leather gloves under them - that system works nice.

And I can also recommend:

https://www.smithsafetygear.com/collections/elbow-pads/products/smith-scabs-kool-elbow-pad-black

I rock those 2 things and a helmet and ride with confidence and respect for the onewheel.

A few amazon recommendations:

XR Charging port cover: https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B072Z41BT9/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o06_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

This one stays on pretty well. I pretty much only put it on if there's a possibility of a rain shower on my way.

XR Power Button cover: https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B01ISNX7LO/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o09_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

These don't stay on as well as the Charge Port covers, but they get the job done for possibly rainy ridge, and they're cheap enough to not worry if one falls off during a spill.

Cheap but effective handle: https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B00RPBA606/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o07_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

This is the handle I ended up going with. It works well, though it does slide a little down the rails. So it's not always level when you pick it up. (It was on sale when I bought it.)

For a more crafty person, I'd just get some paracord and use one of the guides in this subreddit to create your own handle.

I use these elbow pads:

https://www.amazon.com/Bodyprox-Elbow-Protection-Large-Sleeve/dp/B072B9KB4L/

They look like the're in between the triple8 stealth and exoskin pads. I also have the knee pads, but they're pretty bulky so most of the time I wear football knee/shin pads that are thinner but also give me that shin protection.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07K69TGHF

Lately since its been cold I moved over to my rain pants that I bought for motorcycle riding and I LOVE onehweel riding in them. These aren't the exact ones I have because I've had mine for 10 years but they're similar: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07LGX2WCS/

I took an unexpected low speed nosedive Saturday on a gravel logging road with those pants and elbow pads on. I fell straight on my side without catching myself at all and it was almost like jumping into bed it was that soft of a fall.

u/Singular_Thought · 5 pointsr/onewheel

This has been popular for OW XR and also Pint. It is very light and strong. I keep one in my backpack.

TiGr Mini Lightweight Titanium Bicycle Lock & Mounting Clip, Strong and Light Easy to Carry Bike Security https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0155L1G9W/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_tai_TrnKDbNZP9F10

u/jxa · 1 pointr/onewheel

I'm 'that guy' on the OW as I learn. I'm all padded up and ready for when I fall, and I'm not willing to risk snowboard season!

I also come from a motorcycle background so I dress for the slide, not the ride.

Here's my stay-puff marshmallow man gear...

u/Huwajux · 2 pointsr/onewheel

I remember someone saying this Neewer bag would fit a Onewheel in it. Been thinking about buying it but I would honestly rather save for a Superow since you can use it as a backpack instead of as a shoulder bag.

u/cloud1131 · 3 pointsr/onewheel

I use the yoga mat strap with a shoulder strap pad on it. No matter what you do, 22-30 lbs isn't going to feel great on your shoulder for an extended period of time, but the pad definitely helps.

This is the one I got. https://www.amazon.com/Replacement-Shoulder-Camera-Backpack-Messenger/dp/B071L1C3VL/ref=sr_1_4?keywords=shoulder+strap+pad&qid=1570643197&sr=8-4

u/fireproofsalamander · 1 pointr/onewheel

FYI this $32 bag off Amazon is the perfect size and very durable. I highly recommend it.

I road my XR on the beach back when I first got it without any issues. Personally, I would suggest coving your charge port and the power button prior to riding on the beach. The sand gets clogged in the charge port as well as getting inside the button causing it to get stuck. There are two covers that are made for other things but fit perfectly for these onewheel vulnerabilities.

UPDATE:
Cover for charge port:

u/BLAHBLAHneeb · 2 pointsr/onewheel

I got this one:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01C5G2TQY/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_awdb_t1_4thCDb1V2QJ9G

Looks like there are other cheaper ones as well. I’d just be sure you get one with bending arms, I had to bend mine more narrow so they properly fit the Pint.

u/rvncto · 2 pointsr/onewheel

i got these for wrist guards. ive taken 2 falls (3 counting tripping at the top of the stairs) and each time they really saved me.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00BFPH19M/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o07_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1

but then i ordered this entire set for the same price...cause i wanted one elbowpad.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01HI1613S/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

and and they come with a similar style wrist guard, but feels lower quality, but still provide the same area of coverage. so you can probably just get that second set.

and for the helmet, there are so many around the same price point.

the only reason i chose this one was cause of that slight little brim in the front of it hah

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07CWMGQC5/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o05_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

but its been comfortable and my dome feels well covered

u/JClimber408 · 2 pointsr/onewheel

Amazon Folding Guitar stand. The cool thing is that you can bend the arms to fit the pint perfect

u/helava · 2 pointsr/onewheel

I got this one https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00RPBA606/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o05_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 , which for $25 lacks the centering bracket, but I've had zero problems with it at all. Highly recommended, comfortable, cheap. I was excited to see this video, but the cost of the setup is obscene.

u/alexhimself89 · 7 pointsr/onewheel

I ended up purchasing a grab handle for jeeps/off roading rigs. One of the best purchases I’ve made for my OW; it makes lugging it around more like a suitcase.

Polaris 2858185 Grab Handle https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00RPBA606/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_rcY6Ab2CB6VNR

You can buy those plugs in bulk on the cheap when getting them thru camera-accessory vendors on Amazon or w/e you prefer.

uxcell 5 Pcs Clear White Silicone Waterproof Rocker Switch Protect Cover Round Caps https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01ISNX7LO
NEUTRIK NDM DUMMY PLUG FOR MALE XLR CHASSIS CON. (10 pieces) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00LVENU4C

OWs are supposed to hold up really well from non-submersion, but that comes with some big gotchas.

  1. Your OW may not be water-tight where it’s expected to be water-tight. Maybe someone messed up in the factory, or a part was defective.
  2. Salt-water is a bad idea. Water + corrosion will do you no favors.
  3. Some people slip & eat it bad on their stock tires. I hear about wet leaves all the time here. I guess I got lucky or something because I never slid out in anything while riding through the rain. Apparently treaded tires eliminate this from happening, but I’m talking all 2nd-hand here.
  4. Make sure your charge port is completely dry and free of debris before plugging your OW in to charge

I rode mine all winter thru the rain and I know quite a few people use their OW in the snow. Still I’d recommend you at least look into the Badger Kit if not buy it & apply it if you want some peace of mind.

ps: the badger kit/waterproofing in-general is what people are referring to when they say they’ve “badgered” their OW. It’s not some obscure slang for messing it up.
u/bstrathearn · 1 pointr/onewheel

IMHO, these two things should be included with every new OW. This will better protect the few parts of this board that are still vulnerable to rain. Even with these on, I'm not sure if I have the guts to take my OW out in the rain. I guess I will do it while the warranty is still in effect and save it for dry weather after the year is up.

Onewheeling is hugely based on ankle strength. I recommend getting a balance board to test yourself out. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01MQJO2PQ/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

u/barackstar · 3 pointsr/onewheel

i use these, though i haven't used anything to adhere it - https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01ISNX7LO/

u/TheGurgeMan · 1 pointr/onewheel

Nice photo. I see you already have the fender and a handle, so ?I would say your next stage of upgrading would be some dummy xlr plugs, and some covers for the power button for some waterproofing. You are right on the dont push yourself part though, thats how most people get hurt. I forced myself to do the first 50 miles in sequoia, and now I am at mile 300 with cruze. Heres the links to those plugs and covers.
