Orcas, chimpanzees, elephants, dolphins are some of the easiest to see. Four Orca nations off the coast of Vancouver– Northern and Southern Residents, Transients and Offshores. They each have different dialects and languages (hint: just because we do not understand a language does not mean it is not a language), have different cuisines and different traditions, have different kinship structures, etc. Where they live, the waters and those other relations who live there, are their countries.

Humans have states, but everyone has countries, and we all come from nations. Nations are the people-thing. They describe 'from birth' and the shared culture, heritage and stories.

Countries are the lands/waters toward which nations have relationships. Countries change and shift overtime, both in geologic terms and political terms. Think of the use of the term "country" in English, from Scottish Country to Basque Country to Hungarian Country to Tibetan Country to Yoruba Country to Swazi Country to Kurdish Country to Ainu Country to Māori Country to English Country to Québécois Country. Think further on how else we use country: Wolf Country, Salmon Country, Eagle Country, Black Bear Country, Rabbit Country, Emu Country, Giraffe Country, Cedar Country, Sweetgrass Country, Wheat Country, Corn Country, Sandstone Country, Granite Country. Even further to silly ones: Jesus Country, RV Country, Mountain Bike Country

We have just conflated the terms state with country and nation, but they mean different things

Here is a playlist of TED Talks, research videos and similar that should get you thinking about non-human persons

We all can easily agree that a) the world is going up in literal flames and there is a mass extinction event occurring at break-neck speeds and b) the systems that we have in place are those that are causing the global collapse (do I need to cite these or can I just trust this is mainstream enough? /r/collapse otherwise). Well, the system we have in place is inherited from previous systems? And previous systems have seen and are seeing fights to grant personhood → to women, to Indigenous/Turtle Islanders/First Nations/Natives, to Africans and Afro-descendants, to trans and queer folks, et al. Right, like this should be common knowledge, suffragettes and civil rights?

Why would folks think that personhood stops at humans?

Power got centralised to a tiny, tiny minority of light-skinned men, and in that progression of events, almost all life–especially humans–lost personhood. The right to life, to liberty, to freedom of access to that which one needs. And one needs inherited culture, language and stories. Ask any researcher of non-humans, and they will end up saying that [x animal/plant/life] has a unique or specific culture, speaks* in a specific dialect and creates stories out of the dance of life.

This seems wishy-washy, but it is not. Some folks (remember, life, not just humans) tell the stories back either to themselves and/or to others, some just live out their stories. * Language is not just oral, it is manual (think of American Sign Language or Auslan or Atgangmuurniq or Provisle or ProTactile); it is whistled, it is clicked, it is sung, it is danced. Language is complex, and linguistics is really starting to catch on now, slowly. But, watch that playlist and seriously tell any dolphin, elephant, orangutan, raven, orca researcher that those animals do not have language and watch them laugh and correct you.

Back to the structures and systems that got us here. Not only are they a product of that high degree of centralised power, but they are also hinged on misguided notions of superiority over others, over life. We cannot keep treating waters, trees, soils, minerals, fruits and plants, bears, cows and all the rest of our relations like "resources" natural or otherwise. We need to shift away from an ownership and loanership model to a guardianship and caretakership one, for what is ownership but [absolute] superiority over another part of life?

edit: if people are interested, I recommend – Unsettling Canada, A Rightful Place, Secwépemc People, Land and Laws and most relevantly Wild Law

Thai curry is mostly stuff that stores well and available on Amazon. Some coconut milk and curry paste and you're well on your way! Add some veggies and serve over rice. Maybe a can of bamboo shoots and dash of fish sauce but still good without. I haven't tried these brands as I can buy it locally but the reviews look promising:

https://www.amazon.ca/Edward-Sons-Native-Forest-Coconut/dp/B00Q3CL5MQ/ref=pd_sbs_325_2?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=FGJ2CHVXVQ9578DKDT59

https://www.amazon.ca/Mae-Ploy-S312GS-Green-1000-Gram/dp/B002P8AQJ0/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1521067262&sr=8-4&keywords=curry+paste&dpID=51YmtERRN4L&preST=_SX300_QL70_&dpSrc=srch

...and a kilo of curry paste makes a lot of curry. Thai basil is also easy to grow and definitely adds to it.

Even Bush told Reagan that "Trickle Down Economics" is "voodoo".

When an actual Conservative Republican is able to call out someone from the right wing for being so bad for working Americans, there's obviously a problem.

There really should be four political parties in the US:

  • Whatever you'd like to call there type of "political party" Trump is acting like
  • Conservative Republicans
  • Corporate Democrats (the ones who take lobby money and big corporate donations
  • Progressives/"Democratic Socialists" (the ones who believe in capitalism, but don't take lobby money or corporate donations so they don't have any requirement to support anyone except the American public

I wish there were a way to get a Conservative version of Democratic Socialists, but I'm doubting that will happen until after we're able to reset the country so that the current version of Republicans can stop actively hurting this country with their policies.

I would actually really like to think that somewhere out there if a Republican who's capable of being socially aware, who could be a contender in 2024 and defeat the current anti-science/anti-fact/racist/bigoted/patriarchal/sexist/"old white man" Republican party. I don't think that all Republicans are like that, I think the anti-information campaign (aka the disinformation campaigns/propaganda campaigns) have just brainwashed them into believing that they really are the victims in this whole "thing".

I think having the split will also encourage people to collaborate in Congress, too - which will help the constituents a lot more than they are now where they have two people (McConnell and Pelosi), essentially alee to block anything that they don't like it that they're told to not like - which doesn't help anyone.

Thanks for the recommendation! Dinosaurs have a special place in my heart. I once wanted to be an archaeologist (not the same thing as a paleontologist, I know!) but it was because of a dinosaur excavation kit (something like this) that I got as a gift.

> The Liberals are left. Deal with it.

There's a wealth of scholarship to challenge this notion, by myself and others (https://www.amazon.ca/Constant-Libfral-Organized-Canadian-Democratic/dp/0774837136) as well as the fact that wherever the NDP is strong, the Liberals and Conservatives unite to oppose them (this is the case in BC, Manitoba, and Saskatchewan)

And this isn't the party's raison d'etre, but it is a more than plausible outcome in 2019. And the CCF-NDP is the only party outside the original two to not eventually fade away. It may not win federal power, but it has an essential role to play in our politics. It wouldn't be around anymore of this wasn't the case.

If you don't see this, I don't know what to tell you.

Conservatives don't really have much sense of humour. Perusing though my local bookstore selection only reveals scant titles with even a conservative bent, and even then the joke tends to just be "look at this strawman, isn't this ridiculous!" like the Social Justice Warriors handbook or my personal favorite Reasons to vote for democrats which is just an empty book similar to a journal, and that's almost like a joke right -the democrats have no plans, see? But then you realise that someone sold an empty book at full price and the joke is you just wasted your time and money.

You're amazingly optimistic, I'll give you that.

I know I am not eloquent enough (or even picking the right arguments here) to convince you.

I encourage you to read Weapons of Math Destruction: How Big Data Increases Inequality and Threatens Democracy by Cathy O'Neil. She details a lot of the ways that the "data" Big Tech gathers to help governments ends up doing a lot of harm. She's way smarter than I am (and it's a really good book).

If you haven't heard of it i'd recommend Maximum Canada by Doug Sanders which looks at this. though his book focuses far more on population it's quite well written and interesting.

This one's worked fine for me in the past, it gave me no false positives. I knew I could trust it because the region in which my old houses were located was notorious for its incredibly hard water, and that was the only factor for which my results came back as positive.

>Is it so hard to believe that I just don’t understand them and I’m Trying to

No it's not. What is hard to believe is that you think conversing with people who not only hold reprehensible beliefs but that also despise you personally will help you glean that understanding.

You want to know why racists and extremists are the way they are? Here That book, which I found after literally less than 1 minute on Google, will tell you more than an hour long conversation with these reprobates.

I'll say it again, you stand to gain nothing from conversation with them. They stand to gain empowerment from talking to you. That is because their positions rest on an unshakable, unreasonable base that you will not be able to break.

> He was not an environmentalist. The very idea is ludicrous.

Ludicrous! Preposterous! The very idea!

> And your attempt to cast an innocent girl into the Nazi uniform is really quite out there. Wayyyyy out there.

Yes, when I said I didn’t care what Lindsay Shepard believes, what I actually meant was that I care passionately what she believes, and it’s Nazism.

> She shares no philosophical characteristics with Hitler.

Except the two you just admitted, which is vegetarianism and animal welfare. And in your math, 2=0.

> The fact I like beef doesn't make me Churchill.

There’s a difference between arguing that vegetarianism doesn’t disprove Nazism and that vegetarianism proves Nazism. Keep up, kiddo.

> And Adolph wasn't in a romantic relationship with another ethnicity.

I didn’t claim he was. So, three-for-four? Not that that would’ve changed anything of your opinion anyway, so it’s kind of irrelevant, isn’t it.

> Nor was he ever a SJW.

Now what are you arguing? That Sheperd is an SJW? Or that I am? Or that I’m a Nazi?

> Of course you will, because first of all, that is not what I said, and second of all, you have no effective counter to the argument I did make.

You’re right. Of the tens of thousands of stupid arguments being made on the Internet at any one time, I engage in all of them all the time except the ones I can’t counter.

I feel like I’m competing in the Logic Olympics tonight but the other teams didn’t show up.
