If you have the option for wired backhaul and are going to use the Orbi as an access point only, there are cheaper solutions that will yield just as good results.
A couple of these should do the trick in your house. Ubiquiti Unifi Ap-AC Lite - Wireless Access Point - 802.11 B/A/G/n/AC (UAPACLITEUS) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B015PR20GY/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_7fGxDbDFT10XV
The beauty of the Orbi is how well the wireless backhaul works. Why pay the premium and not use the features?
Don't know much about the VPN part, but if it is at all helpful - I got rid of the Bell Home Hub 3000 completely. It continues to broadcast a hidden Wifi SSID for TV services (which I don't have) and I had problems with DMZ/PPPoE passthrough reliability. Replaced with this SFP>RJ45 Media Converter for $39. I'm in Ontario, and it works brilliantly. I receive full speeds and don't have to worry about the Bell junk hardware. All that is required is to set VLAN 35 tagging on Orbi and enter PPPoE credentials into Internet setup.
I bought one of these
NetReset-Digital Timer Outlet Automating Modem and Router Reboot.Net Reset Turns Modem on 2 Mins Before Router Providing Most Secure,Fast, and Reliable Internet. 24 Hour Timer. Original WiFi Reset Plug https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01FY1PFLS/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_v4cVDbD0565D2
Turns off both, minute later rebooted modem and then 2 mins after that reboots the router.
Been working like a charm
If it were me and I needed VPN across my entire network, I may consider a device like this that sits between my internet modem and my Orbi:
https://www.amazon.com/TP-Link-SafeStream-TL-R600VPN-throughput-Concurrent/dp/B007B60SCG?ref_=fsclp_pl_dp_3
It supports IPsec/PPTP VPN protocols, Up to 20 IPsec VPN tunnels and 16 PPTP VPN tunnels. It also has an SPI firewall and DoS defense protection.
i wanted to place a satellite on top of the wall cabinets on my kitchen but didn't have an outlet nearby, so i picked up this power adapter, it's really nice

Three lengths of Cat5e that are joined with RJ45 couplers. The cable was then tested to ensure that it is not miswired.
It's no different than if I ran a single length of Cat5e from one wall plate to another and then used another length of cable to plug into the router and satellite.
Thanks for replying. That’s exactly what I was thinking. Here’s the mount I was considering.
Arlo Camera Mount
It would keep the orbi upright. They definitely look like camera mount screws but I didn’t know if they were standard sizes.
I'd appreciate the first myself.
But as for the second, can't we already do that? Granted, this price is ridiculous (70 bucks less than the router+satellite), but I didn't look to see if it was cheaper elsewhere.
Something we've been working on behind the scenes for a while.
It's available for pre-order now on Amazon and soon at other retailers. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B074NCBVR8?tag=price222-20&ascsubtag=256764842&m=ATVPDKIKX0DER
Any questions about the product?

no it looks more like this one https://www.amazon.com/NETGEAR-Certified-Refurbished-RBK50-100NAR-Satellite/dp/B07DD4KH5M/ref=sr_1_4?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1540334106&sr=1-4&keywords=orbi+home+adapter
Do you have a coax cable by your TV?
If yes, you can turn that coaxial to serve as an Ethernet port.
Actiontec Bonded MoCA 2.0 Ethernet to Coax Adapter, 2 Pack (ECB6200K02), Black https://www.amazon.com/dp/B013J7O3X0/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_Aa2NDbKH87AA0
I have 3 of these units in my house. 1 in the basement where the cable modem is, 1 in my living room (main floor) where I have my 4K Firestick hard wired to, and then 1 on the 2nd (top) floor where I have a Netgear router plugged into it so that my son's Xbox can be hard wired.
Resurectiung this thread. I just setup my orbi with an RBK40 (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B06XJNDYX8/ref=od_aui_detailpages00?ie=UTF8&psc=1) and an RBW30 (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B06XKC6V2X/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1) plug in satallalite and I keep having connectivity issues as well.
Quite a few threads out there, one suggest I change the settings on my iPhone to:
I think I solved the iPhone connectivity problem, but time will tell. Here's what to do:
Full thread here: https://community.netgear.com/t5/Orbi/Bad-iOS-Apple-Connectivity-solved-and-Slow-Speeds-Orbi-RBR40-FW/td-p/1296597
Another suggests changing this:
https://community.netgear.com/t5/Orbi/Orbi-drops-wifi-for-iPad-Pro-iPhone-7-and-Macbook-Pro/td-p/1220137
I have an iPhone8+, 2015 13" MacBook Pro and an iPad Pro
I have a 1650 sqft (150 m²) single floor apartment. It is ALL made of concrete (WiFi can pass two walls at maximum).
If I magically put the router in the exact center of the house, floating in the middle of the air, I could get a good signal throughout the house. I used a web tool from the Ampli-Fi website to simulate this, IDK if you can use without a ampli-fi hardware linked to your account.
This was what motivated me to use a mesh system, knowing that it wasn't a problem with the router that I was supplied by my ISP and buying a new one wasn't going to solve my problem, I needed repeaters and I hated my experience with repeaters and having to manually make the handover cause my cellphone would keep connected to the last straw of signal of the living room router and not hand over to the office repeater.
What I'm trying to say is that having a mesh system has other advantages beyond just covering more sqft. You can have a more reliable 5ghz connection, you will have a more flexible positioning of your router, you will be able to cover that one place that you don't use it very often and never have wifi...

You can buy this one for around 180 usd, that is not that much more than a good single router https://www.amazon.com/NETGEAR-Compact-Wall-Plug-Whole-System/dp/B07D961XT2
The problem is that you will have basically one ethernet port, So for my usage I added a switch (actually quite a few switches, but that is for my particular use)

I have a 300Mbps Fiber to the home connection and can measure 306Mbps on the 5ghz network, so it is enough for my use. Some users on gigabit networks have complained around here.
This one:
Linksys Velop Tri-Band Home Mesh WiFi System - WiFi Router/WiFi Extender for Whole-Home Mesh Network (2-pack, White) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01MSSUG2H/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_tai_-SRmDbQC61Q1T
From my experience, the Orbi is the fastest of all the Mesh system out there, but the Wifi connection is not very stable. I get lag in and out with the Orbi.
The Velop is slower, but much more stable compared to the Orbi.
The other thing I hate about the Orbi is the auto-update of the firmware. It force firmware install, but some of the firmware actually caused issue (e.g. my access control stopped working). If you got to Netgear forum, there’s a huge thread about disabling the firmware auto-update through SSH.
The response from Netgear on this is because the Orbi is a “consumer-grade” system and it rather have auto-update for the “non-techies”. Problem is, the firmware cause problem so even the “non-techies” will have issue.
I bought my Orbi from Costco and I can return it anytime, even beyond 30 days. So after 2 years of headache with the Orbi, I just returned it.
