I've spent the last couple days thinking about your question. In a thread regarding experiences with God, it seems the right place to ask, but it doesn't seem you've gotten a response.

I thought about googling something or finding a response to your question that someone else may have answered, but I don't think I want to do that.

I'll tell you how I know God, and how I know where He is. At a certain point in my life I found myself wondering these questions too. I felt like God was just some big nothing out there that I would never know, and that He would never know me. In spite of all the things I'd heard. Up to that point I had felt... sensations when wondering about God or thinking about God. Almost like a tingling sensation, sort of like when your leg falls asleep and then you start moving again, but it didn't hurt, it almost gave me a high, and I would typically feel it move slowly down from the top of my head to sometimes my whole body. It felt like a type of embrace, as if God or his spirit was wrapping me up in it.

Still I didn't fully understand this feeling and found myself wondering. And I also found deep frustration in my search for answers. All I ever got was, "Well, prove He doesn't exist!" And of course, you cannot prove that either. This is, of course, the essence of belief. No you cannot prove He does or does not exist. Though, belief would lead you to the understanding that He could prove His existence, and that He already has.

Anyways, getting back to it. Along the way in my search I started reading a book called No Compromise: The Life Story Of Keith Green. I still can't fully explain how it happened, but as I was reading through the book I began to pray more and more for God to reveal Himself to me, and for me to begin to see the world through His eyes. My relationship/connection to God grew very strong, and I began to sense a presence always around me, as if I was being followed, but not by anything malicious. When I would focus on it or begin to talk about it I would break down in tears of joy and love. I started to know that this is the Holy Spirit, God's spirit, walking around with me every day. It was overwhelming.

I started to see the world through His eyes, the people I noticed everywhere were hurting and lost and needed help. I began to feel a heavy weight on my shoulders seeing so many people around me, and I could sense their sadness and confusion. I could walk up to someone who was hiding their pain and see right through them. I wanted to pray with everyone, I wanted to help everyone out of this muck we had all been caught up in. I wanted them all to find this God, the way I had, to make their way to this different plain of existence.

But it was hard. A lot harder than I thought it would be to describe this new way of living to people that had never felt it before. Every day I felt free, truly free, and happy. Like nothing I had ever felt before. I know this might sound crazy, but I really believe in this stuff. And there's no doubt it my mind what's going on or what the true nature of the universe is.

And let me be the first to tell you, there is no perfect. God isn't worried about you being perfect, He's happy to have you just as you stand right now. All He wants is for you to be willing.

Anyways, that's just my experience. I thought you'd appreciate it more than some copy pasta from the internet. You can know Him, and He is always with you.

I've experienced some haunting and here are my thoughts in no particular order:

  1. What you say about feeling anger is really concerning. I'd be on the lookout for feelings that aren't yours. It doesn't necessarily mean that the ghost is trying to possess you, but as a precaution I wouldn't get drunk or high at your house for awhile since that can leave you in a vulnerable state. If you generally feel like you feel the emotions of others you may have a psychic sensitivity and I recommend wearing a small mirror facing outward, either on a pendant or in your pocket. You can also do 'clearing' exercises, where you ask the universe/God/whatever name you give a general force of goodness, to clear your body, clear your mind, clear your soul, and clear your aura. Think of it as a meditative and calming ritual. You can do it whenever and as often as you like. You can also ask the universe to fill yourself and your house with protective white light.

  2. Spirits can get energy from water, which is why taps turning on like yours is one sign of a haunting. Tying your faucet down at night might help.

  3. /u/RicottaPuffs recommended spraying sea salt in your corners. I think this is a good idea. I've put bowls of salt in the corners of my rooms during hauntings and it's helped tremendously.

  4. So this comes from having read Echo Bodine's book "The Little Book of True Ghost Stories" about her time as a ghost hunter in Minnesota. She recommends telling the ghost to leave and go to the light, and (I know this sounds bizarre) asking "The Squadron" for help, as they are a group of spirits who used to be ghosts and are willing to help other ghosts let go of their earthly attachments. My feeling is, why not? There's no harm in asking for help from them, and/or from God, and/or from the universe, your spirit guardians, whatever is out there. It will help you. I mean, you've got a ghost, shit's already weird.

  5. More on Echo Bodine, the book I linked above has a chapter on getting rid of a ghost. I can't find my copy at the moment to copy down the essential points, but did find a Q&A she did where people asked some questions about hauntings.

  6. I don't blame you for being scared and stressed. Private message me if you want to talk over the phone and just have someone listen who knows you're not making it up, and can walk you through some of the calming techniques I mentioned above. Good luck.

So here are my thoughts in response to yours. This is just my 2 cents and you can take it or leave it. Have you ever tried to have your own experience? You mentioned that you read stories, watch videos, visit websites, and look at pictures to try and find evidence of the paranormal. This is all fine and good, but these are other people's experiences. I guess you would have to ask yourself, at what point would you accept someone else's experience as truth or proof of the paranormal?

When we analyze, ponder, or humor the experiences of others in these areas the scrutiny is high. There is almost always room for doubt. Take this video for example. In it, a Qi Gong master demonstrates some amazing abilities that he attributes to 'Chi' or life force. These scientists can only measure what they know, and what is physical. At one point one of the scientists says "As a scientist I can't measure 'Chi'. It's not measurable. It is not anything that I can quantify." Think about this problem. How can science prove the paranormal when it cannot even measure or quantify it? The scientific method has it's limits. When it comes to the paranormal you can only indirectly measure. You can observe influences, but you cannot directly measure the force or power behind the influence, if that makes sense...

There are ways of having a safe and personal first-hand experience with something paranormal. If you've read my posts on here before I like to reference Controlled Remote Viewing (CRV) and Past Life Regressions (PLRs). The International Remote Viewing Association website has tons of peer reviewed scientific articles and papers on the subject of Remote Viewing. What better way demonstrate that consciousness is non-local? The cool thing is that you can learn Remote Viewing for yourself if you are willing to commit the time. Money isn't really an issue since there are free courses on youtube and cheap books on Amazon to teach it. I have some bad news for you though. Remote Viewing has been public knowledge since it was declassified back in 1995 and the world still has not woken up or changed. It doesn't have to stay that way though. The trick is to not worry about what others think or believe. Work on what YOU think and believe and you can change the world, one mind at a time. People still say Remote Viewing is fake or a scam or cold war propaganda. They can believe whatever helps them sleep at night. Meanwhile I am learning how to do it and am having success. It is harder than it looks, so it will take time and dedication, but you should have enough success with your first real attempt that it will show you something is truly possible with it.

Past Life Regressions are the same way. You can find a hypnotherapist trained and certified to perform a regression session in your area and have your own experience if you so desire. They will usually have an audio recorder or let you bring your own so you can keep the whole experience for playback later. I found myself wondering and doubting on the subject after reading some books on PLRs. There was no substitute for having my own personal experience so I would know what it was like to sit in the chair and have that vivid experience. Is it all fantasy or is it a meaningful memory that truly fits you and your personal circumstances in life? You can decide for yourself, but not until you go through with it and have the experience. Otherwise it is just an academic exercise.

Skepticism is healthy so don't lose that. Always ask questions and do your own thinking. Skepticism is only healthy until the point where you close your mind to new information. At that point even the truth cannot get in. Some people are so open minded that they will believe anything. You need to find balance between the two, and it can be difficult at times. Stay the course, and stay thirsty for not just knowledge but experience. It is by far the best teacher! :) Thanks for reading.

Reading. Not just about first hand accounts, but also about scientific-method based studies that have been done. There's also a fair amount of decent research out there on the paranormal. I love reading books that propose theories for the existence of paranormal events, such as potential relationships between quantum physics and consciousness.

Examples of the kind of books I mean:

The ESP Enigma: The Scientific Case for Psychic Phenomena

Consciousness Beyond Life: The Science of the Near-Death Experience

I wouldn't necessarily say I believe in demons/angels/spirits the way they are explained by most believers, but I know that some of these experiences must be legitimate. I am open to the fact that they may have some sort of non-spiritual or non-religious explanation, but I believe in them because it is too improbable for me that across the world, in nearly every culture, the concept of ghosts exist. That, and in nearly every culture, across all religions, near death experiences share great similarities - black welcoming tunnel with light at the end, being welcomed by someone friendly, experiencing great joy, having a life review where they are not judged, etc. It can't be coincidence that people from vastly different religions, including atheists, share this story. Some studies have supported the notion that these experiences are NOT due to the biological reasons one would guess. (neurotransmitter release, apoxia, etc)

I wish that people would keep more of an open mind to it, instead of just immediately saying "this stuff can't be true because it's not yet supported by science."

Every single current theory we have was at one point, not supported by science, or even ridiculed. If we all had such a closed minded, and frankly, ignorant perspective, we'd still go around believing in the plum pudding model of the atom, or that the world is flat, or that Higgs couldn't possibly be right about the Higgs Boson theory. Why people can be such closed minded science fanatics when the foundation of science relies on open-mindedness to new theories is embarrassing.

I have also had personal experience in the form of first hand accounts from people who wouldn't make it up (mother, close friends).

If the figure at the end of your bed is vantablack then it is probably a djinn shadow being (they go by other names as well). This type of being mainly called the Djinn has a long history that goes way back many many centuries. You can find a great amount of info about it in this book The Djinn Connection: The Hidden Links Between Djinn, Shadow People, ETs, Nephilim, Archons, Reptilians and Other Entities.

As a commenter mentions, make sure all windows and doors are shut to keep the smoke in your home for a little while and then air out your home later.

Try burning Cedar Sage, after burning white sage, to welcome more positive entities into your household. Lavender smudge sticks also are known for bringing protection. Hope you try the smudging again! Some positive affirmations while smudging will help as well! Good luck!

P.S. Repost this in this sub-reddit as well! More stories are needed and a good community that my have some nice responses The Truth is Here

u/Amdinga · 3 pointsr/Paranormal

You say that until tonight you haven't felt any ill intent from the entity. But that changed? From what I've heard there are essentially two 'types' of shadow being encounters- some are passive and seem more like typical ghosts, sometimes not noticing other people/surroundings, but sometimes they will focus on people and watch them. Then there are more malevolent ones- These entities seem to inspire very intense fear and act quite menacingly.

This is a strange-sounding question, but does your entity wear a hat?

You might want to check out this book. I haven't read it but I hear it's pretty good.

I don't know how you'd go about getting rid of the thing. I think I would try and ignore it for as long as I could, and maybe try burning some sage and performing an amateur house/room blessing if it got worse.

(*Quick edit because I just remembered something)- I did hear an interview with Jason Offutt, the author of that book. I remember him saying that when encountering the more malevolent 'type' of shadow person, people seemed to have success with prayer (if you believe in that sort of thing), laughing, and singing/whistling. It sounds like the expression of positive energy is what does the trick. I wish you luck!

> If the afterlife were a neat, material package that could be placed somewhere and found and touched and put on my feet, there would be no questions on whether or not an afterlife exist.

This is the gist of it. Beyond experience that we can personally reproduce on a daily basis, there is doubt about everything.

How do I know that the weight of the electron is 9.1 10^-31 kg, for example? I do not. Google told me. I didn't test it myself; I don't even know how to test it myself; and Google might be lying.

Perhaps Google is itself trusting a source that has made up this information, or made an error in measuring it. Aha, you'll say, but the weight of the electron has been independently measured and reproduced, by multiple teams. By whom, I ask? By me? No, not by me. Just by a sufficient number of people who appear to be sufficiently credentialed that I do not see a major risk in trusting them. They sign their names with "PhD" and they use words and concepts I have to look up.

That is how I "know" the weight of the electron. By applying very superficial heuristics, not directly to the science itself, but to people who tell me about it. I don't really know the weight of the electron at all. I just take a leap of faith, and use it as though it's true. I haven't measured it myself. I couldn't possibly measure everything myself, and still progress in science.

For some reason, this amount of certainty is okay to build machines and bridges and develop scientific theories, but it's not sufficient when talking about the rarely observed reality. If you haven't experienced it yourself, then all you have to go on is the word of others. And if you
have* experienced it yourself, in most cases, it isn't an ability you have; it's something that happened to you once or twice. You cannot reproduce it on demand.

If reincarnation exists, what evidence is more convincing than a child describing in detail his life as a Vietnam pilot, and having the details check out? Yet there remains room for doubt. Did the parents put him up to it? Did they write the book to be famous and make money?

You can have your own experience if you visit a hypnotherapist. You can have several. But is that proof? Are those really your past life memories, or is your mind making it up?

You can read Michael Newton's work, and be impressed by the consistency in his clients' reports - how they seem to describe the same spirit life under hypnosis, regardless of their culture or their previous views on the topic. But what if Newton is just making it up?

You can talk to hypnotherapists who learned from Newton - other practitioners who are regressing people of different religions, different cultures, clients who never read Newton's work. They'll tell you the reports of these people are consistent with Newton's. But what if these therapists are just deluding themselves, or making it up?

Indeed, what if the weight of the electron is made up? Why do you trust it?

At some point, you have to trust at least the common points that people claim. You can trust tentatively, at first; but each additional person who independently makes a consistent claim adds to the credibility of the core message. That is how you "know" the weight of the electron, without actually having measured it yourself.

I applaud your skepticism! I do take issue with a few statements:

>My younger brother (19), however, is a hardcore skeptic. He claims to have seen a cup levitate and move in front of him in the bathroom one night, and [...] I know that he is definitely not the type of person to do any investigating whatsoever and will just automatically assume that it was a ghost.

Your brother is not a skeptic.

>I always ridicule him for his insane belief.

That's not very nice.

>As an atheist, I can't help but look down upon people who hold religious beliefs because it all seems so absurd to me.

That doesn't help foster communication. I think you might benefit greatly from this half-hour talk from "bad astronomer" Phil Plait. The general idea behind the talk is: when have you ever changed your beliefs just because someone told you that they were stupid? Instead of helping your case, you are hurting it. You'll only cause them to reinforce their beliefs, even if your confirmed evidence directly disproves their beliefs.

>me being the logical person I am, I choose the side of "you're crazy and you imagined it", while he takes the "it was definitely a ghost" side.

You two should work on your communication, because this approach is going to go nowhere.

>It took my brother a little longer to come around to the fact that there is no god.

It is not a fact that there is no god.

>I consider myself atheist while I consider him to be agnostic.

It's a common misconception, but that's not how it works.

If you found confirmation bias [edit: interesting] (and all of the other names we have for the ways our brains will innately fool us), I'd highly recommend that you read Carl Sagan's The Demon-Haunted World: Science As A Candle In The Dark. I would suggest that you read it first, in private. Then I would suggest lending it to your brother to read, and asking him to recommend that you read a book of his recommendation. Afterwards, talk about your thoughts together.

Don't be mean to him, or dismissive. Sometimes, critical thinking has to be taught, or self-learned after experience. It's not a slight on my aunt's intelligence, for instance, that she believes that some forms of homeopathy is effective. I could tell her all day that we know that homeopathy doesn't work. I could give her thousands of pages of scientific journals explaining, in great and meticulous detail, why this is the case. She would likely dismiss "mainstream science," though, because it isn't supporting her worldview and/or belief system. That doesn't mean my aunt is a moron. It means, more than anything else, that she doesn't understand what a useful standard of evidence is in order to determine truths about our world.

>I don't believe in ghosts. Please tell me some experiences, give insight and opinions. Try to help me understand.

I've made similar posts searching for similar truths, like:

I haven't read it yet (been thinking of picking it up), but this is about that:

I am a huge fan of William S. Burroughs, and although I think he was frequently (especially in old age) really gullible, his lifelong obsession with dreams informed his work and life in really productive ways.

If you want to start wondering if our understanding of time is at all correct, start doing a dream journal. Stop if it gets too annoying (unless you're an avant garde writer), as writing down your dreams solidifies them in your memory like real events, and you'll start stumbling around the world having errant thoughts like you have to be careful of the toothy fish that lives under the TV.

However, what you'll probably notice, even within a week or two, is a hard-to-explain prescience in your dreams. For example, I was recently dream journaling again for a class I was teaching on Burroughs (I have a neat job and can sometimes just teach stuff that I like, as an elective.), and I dreamt that I was a boxer who was supposed to throw a fight for the mob, but I didn't, because I wanted the win. I then turned myself in to the mob to take whatever was coming to me. It was the mobsters from True Romance (this is obviously a very Tarantino-inspired dream). They beat me up, yadda yadda not important.

I get up and go to the computer to write this down (since I'd assigned a week of dream journaling to the students, I made sure I did it too), and Firefox is open to Google News. Top story: James Gandolfini died.

James Gandolfini played the enforcer in True Romance.

How many other mob-related dreams can I remember having? How about... zero. Ever. In my life.

Could be something, could be nothing, but mysterious nonetheless.

(BTW, that's how you think about the paranormal. A mystery. Anyone who says they think they've got it figured out is deluding themselves.)

u/Mumberthrax · 40 pointsr/Paranormal

You've got a lot of options. UFOs, ghosts, psi/chi/orgone/prana/od, and crop circles all seem like decent avenues of study to me.

---

Some people don't consider UFO phenomena to be paranormal, so I'll let you decide on that one. If you want resources to study I'd say begin with /r/UAP, and consider nuclear fusion-powered electrohydrodynamic magnetohydrodynamic* aerodynes are well within the realm of human achievability (so long as we had a nuclear fusion power generator small enough to be contained inside the craft).

---

Ghosts... contact with invisible entities. Are they people who were once corporeal like you and I, demons, or something else entirely? Ghosts have existed in stories for ages, and there are countless stories all across the internet (especially if you lurk around r/askreddit long enough) where people have encountered unexplained things that are consistent with ghost stories. There are self-described psychics who claim to be in contact with spirits or non-corporeal entities, and there are people who have created electronic devices to establish contact with the dead through Electronic Voice Phenomenon. If someone were a dedicated enough researcher, and nearing death, they might want to make a pact such that if they died and found themselves still in possession of a consciousness and a modicum of power to influence the world of the living that they would make strong efforts to improve communication between the two kinds of peoples by working with other scientists/researchers.

---

The idea of living creatures and plants possessing a kind of spiritual energy that surrounds and permeates their bodies has been around for a very long time. It's been called psi, chi/ki, prana, orgone, od, auras, ether, morphic fields, etc. There are some people who claim to use it for telekinesis, or psychokinesis. Occult magicians claim to utilize it for all sorts of things. According to many believers, most people use it without knowing, especially when we interact with others, stealing it in arguments or sharing it in intimate or deeply personal friendships. It has been likened to a kind of electromagnetism and a biological substance. It relates often to chakras in the body, and is said to behave differently at different frequencies of oscillation, which can be changed through conscious focus, meditation/prayer, listening to different kinds of music, being around others or in an environment which is already oscillating at a specific frequency (in a kind of resonance tuning manner). Wilhelm Reich claimed that he had created an orgone accumulator, which was effectively a box composed of alternating layers of organic and inorganic materials. The orgone allegedly produced heat, which he measured. Some people believe that faith healing and things like reiki utilize this energy to repair leakages in the aura of others, and that this auric field corresponds to the mind and emotions of the person it belongs to. This of course relates to the idea of the mind existing beyond just the brain alone - which can be linked to stories of organ transplant recipients acquiring memories and habits from their donors, including the miraculous-sounding story of the little girl who was able to identify the person who killed her heart-donor, even though she had never known or seen either (One book on this subject is The Heart's Code, by Paul Pearsall). If the mind is coupled to this etheric field, if its form is manipulated by thought and emotion, and vice-versa, then surely this has massive implications for medicine and communications technology in the future - if it's true. I refer you to the only scientist I know of who is interested in and relatively active relating to this sort of thing - Rupert Sheldrake. Here's a talk he gave to google.

---

Crop circles. The two guys who claimed responsibility for these things before they became widely known could not have pulled them off with boards and rope. Just spend a few minutes looking at how massive and complex they are, and check out new swirled order for a decent video introduction to the subject. Check out the idea of an intense microwave field being utilized to produce the patterns of heat, turning moisture to steam and busting the nodes of the crop, which then fold into a woven pattern depicting complex mathematical formulae, religious symbols, and just generally pretty things. Disregard the hello kitty, firefox, and other obviously made-by-human-hands agriglyphs. Naturally now there are crop-cricle-making enthusiasts, but consider the celtic cross which appeared in the prime ministers front lawn while under regular high security patrols, as well as the oft-reported and occasionally video-recorded orbs of light near the site of future and then-being-formed agriglyphs. New ones are still showing up every year, usually in the summer. Many people jump right to the idea of aliens and while possible to my mind, there's as yet no evidence to support this supposition.

---

But perhaps the phenomenon with the absolute most publicly recognized evidence supporting it is the placebo effect. It is so well-known that many do not consider it paranormal at all, and yet we have no explained it. There is a problem with the language we use relating to unexplained things and the hypotheses and theories created to explain them, and the placebo effect is a prime example of that problem at work. Perhaps you can help to normalize the study of the unexplained, and move us away from the stigmatized label of paranormal, fringe, and the much-loathed pejorative "woo". There are a lot of unexplained things, and not enough people applying actual effort at studying, and too many simply laughing it off altogether. There's a lot of snake-oil, and a lot of gullible people, too. But we need people like you engaged and interested, and willing to push the boundaries to see if there actually is something to these tales.

---

With crystal and gem magick it is believed that if it is not meant for you, it will remove itself. Or too powerful, or possibly you are not ready for it, it will return in its own time. I have experienced this before with Moldavite.

Question: was it a clear quartz crystal and was it chosen for you based on any specific properties??

If you decide to repeat this, I would recommend getting a similar quartz crystal that has a bit of obsidian or other dark stone embed in it. While it may not be as aesthetically pleasing as the first gift, the darker stone can absorb negativity in the environment. After a few nights bury this crystal in the earth so that the negative energies can ground out and heal the stone. A crystal similar to this would work:

http://www.kacha-stones.com/acatalog/info%5f3418%2ehtml

If this interests you as a field of study or belief, might I recommend:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/0875421261

And ask your mother first, she may already have it! (The book or stone). If she has multiple stones matching this description, look at them all and allow it to choose you, and my preference is the obsidian in the base or closer to bottom of the stone, but remember this is your stone, so choose the one that feels right to you.

Be careful accepting stones from just anyone. In this case it is a trusting relationship but crystals with keys and certain markings might also give someone the ability to 'see' you or 'feel' you more, especially if the two stones were attuned to match and one kept, one given.

Otherwise a nice introductory experience to crystal magick. Keep in mind your belief and intent is more important than anything, but if transistor radios have taught us anything, crystals can receive, store and transmit energy when properly attuned. Receiving negative energy and grounding out the stone to healing in its natural state may also transmute the energy.

The Roots of Consciousness. By Jeffrey Mishlove, PhD! This is an amazing book! I have the hard copy. It's totally worth buying if you're into the subject. I think the most recent revised and expanded version was this one from 1997. The content and scope of info in it is really amazing. Jeffrey Mishlove is one of the only people in the United States to hold a PhD in Parapsychology. I think he got it from UC Berkley. This book is often used as a textbook for intro classes on the subject of the paranormal. He also used to have this awesome show called Thinking Allowed where he interviewed many interesting people about philosophy and the paranormal and other interesting topics. You can find a link to their YouTube channel on the site.

If I can make a recommendation, I use these. Not super cheap, but very sensitive and the recordings come out extremely clear. There are other Olympus models that are more expensive, but I've captured some amazing EVP with my 110's.

The great thing about living in an age post inquisition is the church no longer has a monopoly on spiritual matters. When something like an eternal afterlife doesn't sit well, you can look into other ideas and see how they resonate. Check out a book called Journey of Souls. In it, a hypnotist does regression of clients to the in between life place, which are consistent amongst his cases and of people's reported out of body experiences. Also this organization provides a lot of compelling evidence for reincarnation http://www.iisis.net . Also, this guy has done a ton of astral travel and has very fascinating views on non ordinary reality http://www.astralpulse.com/frankkepple.html . Ultimately, you can do your own inner vision work and meditation and see what works for you, not what some outside person or institution tells you is or is not the truth in matters spiritual.

This is an unpopular response, but no.

Even though spirit boards have been in use for centuries, there's not one single piece of compelling evidence that one has ever been used successfully to contact the spirit world. I'm not talking solid proof here, just compelling, reviewable evidence. There is none.

The Ouija board is currently being manufactured by the Hasbro Corporation, the same company that brings us Chutes & Ladders and the Easy-Bake Oven. You can buy them at Toys-r-Us, and they're even available in a glow-in-the-dark version.

They are currently being sold to teenage girls to scare eachother at slumber parties.

If you really want to know how they "work", look into the ideomotor effect.

If you're really interested in souls and spirit guides, I'd suggest a book entitled Journey of Souls by Michael Newton. It was suggested to me a couple months ago on reddit. Really good book.

As r/Jack_Shid said, there are just too many ways to create video/audio/images to trust anything online.

However, there are a few books that opened me up to a much broader view of existence, that I can recommend:

Will Storr Vs the Supernatural by Will Storr -

http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/0061132195/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?qid=1457993127&sr=8-1&pi=SY200_QL40&keywords=will+storr+vs+the+supernatural&dpPl=1&dpID=51GD2%2B3MgfL&ref=plSrch

A great look into ghosts. Some of it is funny, some of it is cringey, but there are quite a few moments that give you pause. A great read.

Fringeology by Steve Volk -

http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/0061857726/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?qid=1457993301&sr=8-1&pi=SY200_QL40&keywords=fringeology&dpPl=1&dpID=41%2BFB2uuB6L&ref=plSrch

A journalist investigates the paranormal as a whole and finds some suprising things. Changed the way I looked at quite a few things, especially when it comes to what drives people to believe the things that they do.

Spoiler: "Logical" people are just as open to bias, ignoring evidence, and being zealots as anyone else.

This book

There's absolutely no question anymore for me. I find it impossible to believe that every single account in that book is made up or a hoax or a misperception.

I highly highly highly highly recommend reading it. One of the only books in my life I've read in 2-3 days. I just couldn't stop.

I torrented it btw. There is only like one seed but I still got it pretty quick. Actually it said zero seeds on the webpage but it still downloaded :P

This book is fairly well written, intelligent, well referenced, and covers this topic via a few different methods. It has a cheesy title and cover but it's worth reading on this subject.

Slightly off-topic (by an entire continent), in the great book Will Storr v. the Supernatural, he talks about staying a night in an unidentified location he calls the most haunted place in England.

I'd thought he might have meant the Borley Rectory. However, (1) Borley was destroyed by fire in 1939; and (2) the experience he describes (I don't want to spoil it) doesn't comport with what I've read of Borley, anyway.

But I'd sure like to know what place that was.
