Features:
For Skyward Sword the original Wii controller is mandatory, swordplay in that game follows your own movement like sideslash, slashing up etc. As for the rest of these games, get a Classic controller. And yeah, try to find Xenoblade Chronicles first ;) It's spectacular.
Other games I would suggest (playable with a Pro controller):
You can get MH Tri on the Wii, but MH 3 Ultimate is a bit nicer to look at. Equally great though imo.
Awesome game, also for the Wii. Great to play with your daughter, if she likes that kind of games.
Very nice RPG's, very story-driven.
There are more of which I've heard good things like Tales of Syphonia, Arc Rise Fantasia and Muramasa, but I'm not in a position to recommend those cause I haven't played them :)
As for the Wii U, there are only a few big games out at the moment but they're all pretty great (so I hear). A must buy (as was for me at least, alongside MH3U) is Zelda: The Wind Waker HD. Colorful, atmospheric, awesome overall.
Edit: Of course I meant the Classic controller, not the Pro. Pro is for Wii U only. I have both and switched them up.
I've got this one, and it works perfectly fine. The color of the the plastic body is very slightly different from a real NES controller, and of course it lacks the Nintendo logo on the front and back. The A and B buttons also feel very slightly more concave. But in terms of overall build quality, it seems pretty much identical. It's held together by 6 metal screws, the plastic is quite thick, and the cable is also thick and sturdy. Just like a real NES controller, you could probably drop it out of a plane and it would still work perfectly.
As for functionality, it works perfectly with the default Windows drivers. No different from any other joystick. Works great with emulators, and with Joy2Key. I played through the entirety of Cave Story with it, and it was awesome.
Funnily enough, I once tried plugging it into a PS3 and it actually worked! Although it's just a bit limited in terms of inputs compared to a PS3 controller...
Speaking of which, this $16 Nyko PS3 controller is the other controller that I own. Using DS3Tool in Xbox controller emulation mode, it works with tons of games automatically. The controller itself is pretty nice, it even replaces the R2 and L2 Playstation-style triggers with much-better Xbox-style triggers.
The PS3 has some spectacular deals in their multi-game collections. Observe:

There's also the Silent Hill HD Collection, but from everything I hear it is a lazy and sloppy port of the games.
Whew! I swear I am not a shill for Amazon. I just appreciate a good deal when I see it.
You could still save a bit of money if you can cancel the ps3. Get the super slim (500 gb) for $220, then get gta v which should be $30 or so. That'll save you $50 you can use for games.

If you go to Glyde and are not afraid to wait a week or 2 you can get games often for $8-$12 or less...
http://glyde.com/buy/used-ps3-game
Congrats on getting a ps3 and welcome to the PS family. It's a great great system. Oh - one more thing: if you can get a Playstation Plus subscription. 2 (sometimes more) free games each month, for $50 a year, less if you can find a deal.
Hey /u/spirit32, I've been playing Destiny since the alpha and I've only just recently been comfortable recommending it to friends. Destiny, the base game, is a trial, you won't feel too satisfied with it. I, personally, consider Destiny: The Taken King as the "base" version of Destiny.
Prior to its release, it really really irked me knowing (but not confirmed) that there was a third subclass locked away behind a paywall. They not only introduced more story with TTK, but also fixed a lot of the way the game handles itself up to that point. (I'm sad you won't get to experience Destiny with Peter Dinklage).
I have Rise of Iron and, while its fun, idk if its a good buy. However, being familiar enough with Bungie, you'll be "punished" for not having it so I'd just go all in. If you can be a little more patient, I think black friday would net you a great deal to buy 2 copies of Destiny: The Complete Collection. Getting into Rise of Iron allows you both to play the best part (to me) of Destiny: The Iron Banner. Previous to ROI, the event was held in "the tower," now its held in a new social space that is exclusive to ROI.
At it's current price of $48, I think this is a fair price for all the content it brings with it (complete collection).
It's definitely worth trying! It's very fun and a very solid game and honestly one of the better puzzle games on the SNES. Make sure to play 1P Vs. mode, that's the equivalent of a "story" mode.
If you're playing on an emulator, I would recommend picking up a SNES USB controller or a USB adapter and an official, used SNES controller. I've had this for 5 or 6 years and it's how I play SNES games on PC.
Oh, Kirby's Avalanche is good too. It's not got the Tetris branding, but it's another puzzle game that got reskinned for western release. In Japan, it was called Super Puyo Puyo, and of course Puyo Puyo is still around as a series, including a recent Tetris mash-up.
It depends on the program, but generally speaking, it's very easy. Xinput controllers (specifically, the 360 controller) often work with programs by default, and if not it's a relatively painless configuration process. Worth noting, you can get a wireless 360 controller $45, which includes the USB transceiver. I haven used a wireless one myself, but I've heard good things about the official Microsoft ones (which I linked.)
The ease of use does have a drawback however, and it's something that a lot of people will probably confirm; the D-pad is subpar. It works, but compared to the fantastic D-pad that Nintendo has had in every console since the SNES and the Playstation's D-pad, the 360's just isn't up to snuff. I think it's a fairly minor issue though.
The 'entertainment.ie' article is a single opinion -- why listen to them in particular? Everywhere else, people tend to call it 'Action Adventure' (or just adventure more generally). On Zelda Gamepaedia, on Amazon, on Metacritic, and even on IMDB. Even Nintendo calls it an 'Action' game (though they are fluid with their categorization).
Secondly, the 'RPG characteristics' is a broad list of which 99% of games have elements that would fit. Under the first category, Story, it is described as having a plot involving saving the world and has twists and turns. Boy, I wonder what game has that? But really, any genre has a broad list of characteristics of which 99% of games would fit because most genres have a broad amount of things players can do that have been refined and added over years of development. In general, there tends to be a colloquial understanding of these genre terms. For 'RPGs', I wouldn't say OOT have many elements that would make it fit.
Don't get me wrong -- I don't see the problem in calling it an 'RPG'. It ultimately doesn't really matter in the end so long as you enjoy the game. I'm just curious as to why.
Get the Metal Gear Solid Legacy Collection
it has every major Metal Gear Solid (1-4) game you would need to play besides Ground Zeroes and The Phantom Pain. Otherwise if you can't find the Legacy Collection get the HD Collection. Keep in mind though if you do get the HD collection instead you will have to seperatly get the original Metal Gear Solid (It's on PSN for PS3) and Metal Gear Solid 4.
Play them in order:
I'm a big fan of emulation. If you think you may ever want to some more N64 gaming, consider picking up one of these adapters. That, plus an n64 controller will run you less than $30 and you've set up a pretty authentic n64 experience.
Also, people have reminded you of Link to the Past, and even the original Legend of Zelda (which I'd recommend you try eventually, if nothing else to get a feel for the types of games NES had!) - keep in mind these are easily emulated and a ps3 or xbox controller will map very well.
Thank you so much, this is awesome. I've got an HDMI cable that can run from my computer to TV, so emulation is sounding better and better.
Ok, being that I've never done this before, can you link me/recommend how/where to download an emulator? How do you get the games on it? What do you think of this controller? Think there would be a way to hook up two controllers (i.e. Mario Kart, TMNT, & F-Zero)? Thank you!
This one in particular. 1st party and the cord is longer (10ft > 6ft). Generic controllers will be ok for the most part. My friend had a few he bought off of eBay and the only difference I could tell was lack of Nintendo logos on front and back of controller, and the L and R triggers were a bit sharp. Buttons were a tad stiff but they were manageable for Mario Party. Of course, your experience will vary depending on your luck.
Still waiting for Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn and Xenoblade Chronicles for the Wii to come down in price. One of these days...
As for games I've actually waited a long time to play, the winner there is probably either Half Life 1 (played it for the first time this year) or maybe some old Atari games (played on one of those battery-powered hook-to-TV consoles maybe 7 years ago).
I've been using this one for a couple of years:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0034ZOAO0
It's actually quite decent, and for $9 you really can't go wrong with at least giving it a shot. As you can see it is reasonably popular on Amazon (255 reviews) and gets 4 stars.
The D-pad is a hair on the stiff side, but not bad, and certainly no worse than your typical knock-off controller. I was able to play Dustforce with it, so that should speak volumes to its responsiveness. Face buttons are pretty good, shoulders acceptable.
It has held up for 3 years or so with light-to-moderate use with no issues.
I really like the Buffalo SNES controller for both NES and SNES games and I have generic Genesis and N64 controller USB adapters that work perfectly with emulators
The only reliable gamecube controllers I've found are the official nintendo controllers. http://www.amazon.com/Official-Nintendo-White-Classic-Gamecube-Controller/dp/B0017KIBAI
It's expensive, but they last the longest and feel the best
Buffalo Gamepads [link in japanese] are the only USB gamepads I have found that are as good quality as the original Nintendo ones. You can buy an SNES one off Amazon for $25 including shipping from Japan. Here's the amazon link.
For sheer game compatibility, the Windows Xbox 360 controller. If a game supports a controller, that is usually the one. You do have to make sure to get the Windows one, not the Xbox one, because if you got the xbox one, you need to purchase an add'l adapter.
Wired: http://www.amazon.com/Microsoft-Wired-Controller-Windows-Console/dp/B004QRKWLA
Wireless: http://www.amazon.com/Microsoft-Wireless-Controller-Windows-Console/dp/B004QRKWKQ
Steam has its own controller now, as well. I have been seeing mixed reviews on that.
http://store.steampowered.com/universe/controller/
Just to clear up any confusion (because when I went to buy these games 6 months ago I got it messed and up wasted $10.) The Legacy Collection includes The HD Collection, MGS IV, and a PSN code for MGS1 (note this ISN'T the Twin Snakes version, which is Gamecube exclusive and is much better in almost every way. So much so, that IMO you should just watch a long play on youtube instead of playing the original PS1 version.)
So if you DON'T have MGSIV and want to play/experience the whole series, absolutely get the more complete Legacy Collection. Only buy the stand alone HD Collection if you already have a copy of MGSIV and are going to watch Twin Snakes (MGS1)on youtube (which I recommend either way.)
You could get a SCART to HDMI, which it actually works pretty well, here´s an example of one:
https://www.amazon.com/VCANDO-Converter-Adapter-Switch-Scaler/dp/B01N06Q9WH/ref=sr_1_3?keywords=SCART+TO+HDMI&qid=1556981611&s=gateway&sr=8-3
I don't see it for sale digitally, but Amazon has both used and new copies for sale. Be sure to check the PC gaming wiki, run by Redditors for advice on how to get it running on a modern OS.
I have two of these SNES USB controllers and they work great.
There won't be more single player content for Tomb Raider.
source: http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2013/03/20/sadface-tomb-raider-dlc-will-not-offer-any-new-tombs/
It's on sale for $17,5 over at Amazon.
It's a streamlined, but rather enjoyable experience. It will get cheaper quickly, as every Square Enix title does, but it's worth $17,5 imo.
>The problem is that the more people who do this, the less money developers/publishers make. If too many people wait for the GOTY edition there won't be a GOTY edition.
That's what the marketing is for. ;)
could get something like this and use the original controller on the PC http://www.amazon.com/SNES-Controller-Adapter-USB-Super-NES/dp/B002IXZ5DE
Personally, if you like RTS games, I'd suggest something that's on Amazon/Origin -- Command and Conquer Ultimate Collection at $5.
The earlier ones haven't aged so well, but the later ones work great and are strongly story driven. Just pretend that C&C4 doesn't exist -- it's the red headed bastard step-child.
And with the $5 you have left, wait for Skyrim, Fallout 3 or Fallout NV to be under $5 -- those you'll find on Steam.
Enjoy!

I actually just borrowed melee from a friend! And I've been playing smash bros since the n64 version, but I've never actually owned a nintendo console until now. Now my problem is that I don't have any gamecube controllers. Is the Classic Controller Pro any good for smash bros? I also see some used gamecube controllers for $14, so I might just go with that.
N64 version - $20
3DS version - $23
Gamecube version, with original and Master Quest - $25
Collector's disc - OoT, Majora's Mask, Zelda 1 and 2 - $40
Or there's the Wii Virtual Console version for $10.
Alternatively, you can play it on your PC with the retexture mod. I've been wanting to try that for a while but never got around to it.
I don't have any personal experience with it, but when I researched this a while back it people seemed to recommend the Tomee branded SNES controller over others
If you have a current-gen console, I wholeheartedly recommend Destiny, especially in its current state. There's always some deal on the game + all DLCs, and by now there's a staggering amount of content.
Edit: this is what I mean. You can get the entire game + all DLCs on sale for $25 on Amazon right now here.
It's $1.74 on Amazon right now! Anyone who doesn't have it by now should get it.
And KB/M FTW!
Edit: Fixed to $4.99 :(
There really isn't anywhere to buy it online. You can order it on Amazon but it'll cost you and is not worth it. The PC version has all sorts of issues apparently.
I would either buy this for the PS3/360 (easiest option really) or emulate the game using PCSX2, but please don't ask for a link to the ISO for the game.
If anybody was interested in purchasing several Command & Conquer games, know that every single Command and Conquer game is available for $20 with "Command and Conquer: The Ultimate Collection". http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B009IR1SR0/ref=redir_mdp_mobile
Requires Origin.
You could buy the Command and Conquer Ultimate Collection on Origin or Amazon for $20. Red Alert 3 alone is $20 on Steam without a sale. If you wanted to wait, the Ultimate Collection does go down to $5 a few times a year at both Origin and Amazon.
... then don't?
It retails, NEW, for $25 on Amazon right now. $15, used.

I think its this one, on mobile and the Amazon app only goes back so far. May Flash N64 Controller Adapter for PC USB by May Flash http://www.amazon.com/dp/B002B9FIUU/ref=cm_sw_r_udp_awd_NAQVtb1DPKDHQ
I use this one from iBuffalo
In case you didn't already know, if you buy the 360 controller that's specifically branded for PC, it comes with the wireless receiver in the box. You don't have to buy them separately and it's usually around the same price as a single wireless 360 controller.
http://www.amazon.com/dp/B004QRKWKQ/
Personally I would say an XBox 360 controller AND a classic controller will cover all your bases. Playing classic games with an analogue or the Xbox d-pad is complete ass. I'd recommend the buffalo classic USB gamepad.
You mean they don't sell them separately? If you buy a Microsoft Xbox 360 Wireless Controller for Windows (link to amazon) you get the receiver and I doubt it's a knock off.
