Like someone else said in this thread, the absolute cheapest phones will give you a hard time and will earn you less money. If you have $100, invest wisely and purchase a phone with good solid performance:

  1. The Moto G for Verizon ($69.99) is a popular phone around here and has solid reviews from Perk users.

  2. The ZTE Z740/A&T Radiant ($70.16) is another solid phone that, in my personal experience with it, works really well with Perk; I've had no issues with it at all.

Another decent phone on Amazon is the Samsung Galaxy Rush ($47.99). It's a bit better than the cheapest phones and a bit worse than the first 2 phones I mentioned.

Now, if you want the cheapest phones on Amazon that can run Perk TV, the Kyocera Hydro ($33.79) and the Samsung Galaxy Centura ($40.36) are options.

OP, I really recommend the ZTE Concord II by Metro PCS. This phone has the most value for the money (yes, you'll have to buy it with a credit/debit card) at only $29! This works just like the Moto G or the Radiant; it's fantastic for Perk TV and you will be impressed with your earnings.

    Hope this helps

The way you have it set up is as separate as they can get. The access point mode I mentioned is not a default so if you are unsure what it is then it's not likely you have gone through the steps to change it over to that. I would suggest a better router to be honest. The ones you have were great in their day, but that was ages ago.

This is a very nice one that won't set you back all that much either. It supports most of the major 3rd party firmwares as well. You may also want to look into an offshoot of OpenWRT called Gargoyle. Their page can be found here. I mention this one because it has a lot more bandwidth controls than others I've seen. It even allows you to set quotas for specific devices or a shared quota between a few devices as a group.

Routers from ISP's typically are quite bad. They are mean't for light usage and Perk usually quickly goes over that light usage (Depends on how many devices you are using). The EdgeRouter X is available ($52), but I have no experience with it. It is recommend by a few people on this subreddit. This is a wired router.

Most people are used to routers including wireless in this. In this case you need an access point for wireless ability. I linked one below that keeps getting recommended by others ($75). /u/back_like_woa made a great point about consumer routers and Perk earlier today. In a nicer way of saying it, these options are better than dealing with cheaper consumer routers that have issues.

ignore all the router advice in this thread so far.

buy this

if you dont have enough money for that, then buy this instead

i have personally thrown 100+ clients at the edgerouter X.

when you decide on which one you want to buy, switch your current router to AP mode, hook it up to the edgerouter, enjoy a much more stable connection.

you can thank me later.

oh yeah, the X has PoE, whereas the lite does not. PoE is really, REALLY nice for home security systems and other nifty 'internet of things' devices.

For charging, it really doesn't matter what you use as long as each port can provide 5v 800mA. The USB hubs that only provide the standard 500mA for USB will work too, but your phones may exceed the operating specification of the hub if they don't start 100% charged.

My short list when getting a USB hub was:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00EYXZI4M

http://www.amazon.com/Family-Sized-Desktop-Charger-PowerIQTM-Technology/dp/B00GTGETFG

http://www.amazon.com/Rosewill-10-Port-High-Speed-RHB-500/dp/B004F38WT4

http://www.amazon.com/AmazonBasics-Port-USB-power-adapter/dp/B00DQFGJR4

Based on reviews and forum posts around the web, they all provide the necessary current for 5 devices being charged at once. They're all good enough to power a Raspberry Pi model B, so they're all good enough for some pretty demanding USB load with stable power.

u/mixmastersalad · 2 pointsr/perktv

Yeah it looks like one too, lol. Picked it up last Black Friday from Staples for pretty cheap after ink recycling rewards.

Is the router that I've been using. I bought it specifically for the same reason you're talking about. It's been very good so far. It is limited to N type devices, but I know that the Hydros and the ZTE's are all N type so it's not a huge deal.

What interested me about the router is that it's got Gigabit Ethernet and 300/450 Mbps wireless, which other routers with the same technology were costing in the 80-100 dollar range. This refurbished router is pretty powerful for $35.

u/leglessmoof · 1 pointr/perktv

I bought this one about 10 days ago:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00M8XYJ6I/

I only have 2 devices hooked up at the moment, but so far it's working well.

It definitely wasn't the cheapest option, but the customer reviews were pretty solid, and I really needed the included extra USB cables.

u/oahumike · 3 pointsr/perktv

Definitely don't want to cheap out too much when it comes to power as fires can happen. I bought 2 of these with beermoney when they were ~$30 a piece. Have been great and don't get too hot. I am running 9 phones on one and 6 tablets with 1 phone on another. Would definitely recommend!

u/GuiltyTangent · 3 pointsr/perktv

Fair enough. I would give this TP-Link a good look. It's only $40 You can find a great review of it here. Even though this router is technically a dual band, it is wise to consider it due to the internal specs. It uses the same CPU as the last gen of Apple's Airport. It also packa a healthy 128MB of RAM. This is the cheapest router that I know of that has 128MB of RAM.

u/hexxus23 · 1 pointr/perktv

Just got this here. http://www.amazon.com/AmazonBasics-Port-USB-power-adapter/dp/B00DQFGJR4/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1413374779&sr=8-2&keywords=usb+port+hub Its the amazon hub. I grabbed a refurbished/used one from their warehouse deals they have and I can saw it was worth the 18 bucks and works amazing. Also It looks like it wasn't even use that much or really at all to be honest.

u/KimJong_Bill · -1 pointsr/perktv

Nokia 520 GoPhone is $30 on Amazon. I bought one for Perk and I love it! I would use it as my daily if I didn't have Verizon. It also runs perk very well, it has not crashed i the two weeks I've had it, although you can only play movie trailers on it, there are no options for App Trailers or Popular Videos.

http://www.amazon.com/Nokia-Lumia-520-GoPhone-AT/dp/B00E45043A/ref=pd_rhf_eebr_p_img_1

u/Mthrboard · 3 pointsr/perktv

If you just need to charge your phones, use this Anker USB charger. Otherwise, if you wanted to connect your phones to your computer and still charge them, I would use this Amazon Basics USB hub. I have three of the Amazon hubs, one on my computer for just regular USB devices, one for my farm and one for my brother's farm. I also recently used the Anker charger to set up a farm for my brother-in-law at his house. Look at the power requirements of your phones before you buy one or the other. Lower-end devices, like the Hydros, Galaxy Rush, or the LG Fuel, will work fine on the hub. If you got higher-end devices, like the Moto G, you would be better with the Anker charger.

u/aroihkin · 1 pointr/perktv

Seconding the surfboard, it's a beast. (And yeah, OP, you will need a router as well for phones. This is the router I use with mine, which I'm sure best buy or walmart probably has kicking around too.)

u/applesdg · 1 pointr/perktv

I have 5 Hydro's, and purchased three of them brand new for 30$ each http://www.amazon.com/dp/B008P2O89E/ref=sr_ph?ie=UTF8&qid=1409410942&sr=1&keywords=hydro
They were a little frustrating the first day or two because of crashes, but I haven't had a single problem since. I would suggest app cache cleaner and set it to clear the cache every 6 minutes. Runs smoothly :)

u/brokemember · 4 pointsr/perktv

I personally find the ASUS RT-N66U to be an excellent router.

You can sometimes find it for as low as 100-105.

The most important question is how much stress do you actually need to put on the router.

As in:

How many devices?

Are they primarily using 2.4 or 5GHz

Are they b/g/n or ac (ac is highly unlikely since its so new). This router does not support ac...though i wouldn't be too concerned with that for at least another 2 years or so.

In all honesty most routers under $40-50 can handle most Perk needs — as well as your other household devices.

Though I always say, its better to spend some more now...than later.

u/[deleted] · 1 pointr/perktv

Thanks, appreciate the advice.

Can you tell me whats better about the Nighthawk vs the Asus RT-N66U ?

u/mrfer · 1 pointr/perktv

Update: I ended up getting this one: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00L4HWY3E/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1

So far I'm pretty happy with it!

(Paid with PerkTV GCs!)

u/riskymint · 1 pointr/perktv

Thanks a ton for the links. Is the difference in wattage particularly important? Since I don't know much about chargers yet, I assuming both the 50W and 25W will work generally the same as long as the amp amount is similar.

Out of curiosity, have you had any experience with Sabrent chargers like this one? https://www.amazon.com/Sabrent-Family-Sized-Charger-Technology-AX-TPCS/dp/B00OJ79UK6?ie=UTF8&keywords=sabrent&qid=1456884551&ref_=sr_1_4&sr=8-4
I bought a 10 port when I first began my farm and thinking of investing in a second one. Do you think the watt and amp is balanced enough for use?

u/isaacwasthere · 1 pointr/perktv

Rosewill 10 port hub for $19.99 with Prime
And [usb cables, pack of 5 for $4.99 with free shipping on ebay]

I've had great luck with the hub, I've purchased 3 of them total (not all for me). I've been running 10 LG motions on one of mine and had no problems with the power supply (but you will need to turn down the brightness settings on the phones). The hub supports a max of 4 Amps ,400mA max per port if you're using all ten ports. I've also bought 3 packs of usb cables from that ebay seller. Quick shipping and no problems.

u/matchqq · 1 pointr/perktv

Highly recommend this one http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B008RV51EE/ref=mp_s_a_1_13?qid=1418505764&sr=1-13&pi=AC_SX110_SY165_QL70

I've been using it for 2 weeks and it's been running smoothly without any disconnection with all my Perk devices connected running 24/7. I'd guess the next tier one with 3 antenna would be great too (only $9 more).

u/yojoe600 · 1 pointr/perktv

I use this and works wonderfully. Its better to buy one of these than use a surge protector so that you have less wires. This

I'm pretty aware that the phone isn't a top end phone and the price is a premium. But use this as a reference when comparing with other available phones.

u/fire_hydrant · 1 pointr/perktv

The V2 of this router is worth the extra money, as well. It has more RAM and a much faster processor. I think it is the same processor that is available in some of the Archer models.

Check out the specs here: http://wiki.openwrt.org/toh/tp-link/tl-wr1043nd

Throw gargoyle or dd-wrt on it and you have a very nice setup for less than $50. Link: http://www.amazon.com/TP-LINK-TL-WR1043ND-Wireless-Detachable-Antennas/dp/B002YLAUU8/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1418564869&sr=1-1&keywords=1043ND+v2

Should've asked on Reddit or researched online first. u/beermoneyme answered it right - it's a data hub. I purchased one almost identical to it on eBay that was sold as a charging hub and I got the same results as you. Talk to Amazon (or the seller) - you should be able to get a refund pretty easily.

After learning my lesson, I upped my game and got one of these. Anker's hubs are amazing, keep cool and take little to no space. I'll never go back to low quality, crappy looking hubs.

u/perko12 · 7 pointsr/perktv

So, if your connection is slowing on desktop while hardwired I'd forgo the access point for now and get a dedicated router, an Edge Router X, instead. I'd then set your current device into access point mode and see how it goes.

Having said that, are you sure it's your router/ap and not your ISP speed?

u/Mikazah · 0 pointsr/perktv

I have no idea where you are getting your prices at. They're $23 brand new at Amazon - which is almost always overpriced Brand new ones are $25 on ebay Used ones go on ebay for under $10 easy.

They were on sale at $9.99 at Walmart within the last two months. And I think $14.99 at Best Buy. Or maybe it was $9.99 too. There was a bunch of phones on sale at Best Buy so I don't remember which price they were.

Regardless, I had no intention of haggling since I don't like hydros. But you are really high-balling it. They are $20-25 brand new. Used phones don't go for anywhere near that. Even if you bought 4 brand new phones at Amazon's $23, it'd be no more than $92. That's brand new, not on sale, overpriced hydros. Used farm phones go for half of what new ones are.

u/beermoneyme · 2 pointsr/perktv

They're not the cheapest, but I've never had any compatibility issues with them and they seem unlikely to burn my house down, so to me they are worth the extra money. I also like the compact, vertical form factor.

I have the TP-LINK TL-WDR3500 Wireless N600 Dual Band Router.

Reason I went with this one over the ASUS RT-N66U is because where I live I don't have the option for Gigabit speeds, so I couldn't really justify the additional cost of the ASUS. It really is a great router though.

u/sylviandark · -1 pointsr/perktv

You're really defensive about 5GHZ.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0088CJT4U/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

With this router 5ghz simply didn't work on more than one level of the house. It was a huge difference in range and for my situation, yes, 5ghz was a gimmick.

u/QuirkyQuarQ · 2 pointsr/perktv

Be very careful of cheap multi-port USB 2.0 hubs (a hub allows you to connect multiple devices to one computer USB port; a multi-port charger like Anker or Poweradd has no computer connection):

  • The power supply should provide for at least 500mA per port, so 2.5A for 5 ports or 5A for 10 ports. No "cheap" hub provides such a robust power supply.
  • Confirm that the hub will charge devices even if it is not connected to a computer.
  • USB 2.0 limits max current draw to 500mA per port. A lot of phones will try to draw more than that. Higher quality hubs will limit the current, while cheaper ones may just blow that port (=dead port).
  • Some phones will detect hubs as computer ports and go into "slow-charging" mode (100-150mA), which can result in the phone using its battery instead and eventually running out.

IMO you are much better off with multi-port CHARGERS, such as:
  • 5-port for 11.99 with Prime
  • 10-port for 29.99 with Prime
u/mach0nach017 · 1 pointr/perktv

I just think that would be overkill considering I only have 25mbps down/5mbps up and am using one of comcast's modems. I don't really have the money or desire to redo my whole setup right now even though I probably should. For now, I think I am just going to get a TP-LINK TL-WDR3500. It will be a big upgrade from my current router that is over 3 years old. Thank you for your input.

u/Kay838 · 1 pointr/perktv

With 16 devices connected, two routers should be ok to handle the bandwidth. My problem with the 2 router set-up was that the routers kept on dropping the connections after a while so I upgraded. I currently use the Netgear ac1900 I am amazed at what I can do with this router - I have not had a dropped connection for months while giving it everything I've got.

I had a bunch of micro usb cables laying around the house from this and that - plugged them into my computer and they've charged the phones and kept them running quite well. That said I'm in the middle of buying a hub with micro usb chargers on Amazon.ca: (not sure how to post a text link here) http://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B00M8XYJ6I/ref=ox_sc_act_title_8?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=AREE309N4XPXI

some are, some aren't.

Personally speaking, I have many LG Optimus Exceeds that I bought for under 14.99; of which many were bought as back-ups when they hit the 11.99 mark on Amazon a month ago.

Track the phone using camelcamelcamel.com (it alerts when an Amazon.com item from Amazon drops to a set price): [http://camelcamelcamel.com/LG-Optimus-Exceed-Verizon-Prepaid/product/B00K2XX4OY]

As I said in a post awhile ago, that site (camelcamelcamel.com) has literally saved me hundreds of $$$'s from buying things when they hit a low price. In terms of the LG Optimus Exceed, wait for when it drops to under 14.99 and buy ASAP.

u/Absocold · 1 pointr/perktv

I could not more highly recommend the Asus N66U. It's expensive, but worth the investment if you need both speed and multiple devices to connect. You can go more expensive, but like I said, I have all those devices connected and experienced no issues so far. Say goodbye to having to unplug that fucking thing 30 seconds every time.

u/Aboricand · 1 pointr/perktv

No matter what I tend to adhere to the maximum 10 devices per router rule and things have been great for me.. Also TP-Link routers have been working great for me. I do have the free TMO branded Asus but why pay more than you need to right?
