I would build your project around your available optics and lighting. With a $500 budget, we can rule out working with an array of DSLR cameras, but I think you can still make it work.

For what you want to capture, it sounds like you will want to work with short focal lengths at short distances. That's good because these are often inexpensive. Here's an example at 5 megapixels for $17 that plugs into a Raspberry Pi computer.

Next questions:

  • Can you solder?

  • Do you have any experience with Arduinos and/or Linux? Are you interested in learning?

  • Are you comfortable working with CAD?

  • Do you have access to a 3D printer?

    ---

If it were me, I'd consider buying at least one of these adapters: http://www.arducam.com/multi-camera-adapter-module-raspberry-pi/

According to the documentation, you can stack these to create arrays of up to 16 cameras and as far as I can tell, you only need one Arduino or Raspberry Pi computer to control the camera array.

    ---

For the flexible camera mounts, consider saving a few dollars by copying this guy's idea with copper wire inside plastic tubing: https://petapixel.com/2015/08/16/build-a-diy-flexible-camera-mount-for-just-8/

    ---

If you have access to a 3D printer, I would make camera enclosures for each camera - after you get them working of course. I would design a case that lets me use a 1/4-20 nut like this so you can use your cameras on any standard camera mounting equipment.

    ---

It will take some time to build this, but it sounds like a fun project.

    Good luck!

Ah, gotcha. Just a single camera on a tripod with a turntable. I have one of the cheap amazon product photography diffuse box things to make lighting and masking way easier. The whole setup is pretty cheap. Outside of the camera, a d7000 and 50mm prime that I've had for years for normal photography, there's maybe 150 bucks in other stuff. It's pretty much: take part to scan, throw some baby powder at it, slap it on the turntable, rotate rotate rotate, adjust camera position, repeat as necessary.

If it's day light out, I've had good luck with my cellphone camera (iphone 7) and a beefy selfie stick that has a bluetooth remote. The images are plenty sharp (again, if bright enough) and I can get good reach for what I need to do. In your case, depending on the size of the excavations, I'd consider making some kind of rig from PCV pipe or something you could slide the camera along horizontally (maybe pulled by string or something) to get really consistent shots. I wonder if shadows will be an issue for you, but maybe you could use a ring light to help keep it well lit?

If you're set on a non-cellphone camera, look at the Lumix ones, too. They consistently rate very high and some have a really big (for the size of the camera) 1" sensor

I would need to look up the bulbs that I have on top, because they're part of a super old lighting kit that I used like 5 or 6 years ago. The two little lights in front are from this tent kit I purchased:

Do you have any suggestions for my white balance setting on my camera? I think right now I just have it set on Auto White Balance

I'm using a white plastic cake decorating tray and its been working out pretty good. The problem that I'm having is that the models have a hole in the bottom of them and I can't figure out how to make a solid from them. I'm using Memento and Meshmixer. Any tips? Agisoft has a sample dataset called Monument.

The first pass should be around it at a distance, trying to get as much of the top as possible. Then go closer in for detail on the lower part. The best would be just fly around it with a drone. There are also inexpensive extending camera poles.
