It's not pretty lol. We tried to zip tie everything together to make it at least understandable haha

EDIT: Hijacking this post since there are a LOT of common questions. Oh and /u/smilenataliew is the wife :)

FAQ:

>How did you connect everything to the TV/What adapters did you use?

NES through Gamecube (bottom 4): We have a 4-input composite switcher (those Yellow/Red/White cables) between the N64 and Gamecube, connected to our TV's 3.5mm composite port (which looks like a headphone jack), which we convert with cables like these. We do not recommend a composite to HDMI converter, as the output (might) look garbled from older systems (it did for us).

Wii: Component cables to HDMI converter, then into a remote controlled HDMI switcher (switcher and controller can both be seen to the left of Kirby Amiibo/the Wii)

WiiU & Switch: HDMI to the same HDMI switcher

>Don't the controllers just fall out when you open the case? How are they secured?

The NES controller is resting on a WiiU controller stand, oddly enough!
The SNES controller is the most finnicky. It's slightly leaning back on its own cords, but it's hard to get it to stay put.
The N64 controller is leaned against a stack of N64 games--it's definitely the system my wife and I have the most games for already!
The Gamecube controller is leaning against two other stacked gamecube controllers.
The Wii controller is just just leaning up against a thick piece of cardboard (more cardboard is also holding up the NES and SNES systems since the bottom of their doors would block view of the systems otherwise. My wife intends to wrap all cardboard with contact paper to make it all more decorative, she's very crafty!)
The WiiU has the same controllers as the Wii, except for the screen one, which is on a stand that actually charges the unit while it sits on top of the WiiU system!
The Switch controller actually stands on its own with the joy cons connected to them, but I've decided to actually show the charging station we bought with the joy cons connected to it so that they'll always be charged and ready to go!

>Where are the games?

Behind the controllers! In fact the N64 controller is leaning on a stack of them.

>Cable management? Do you have controller extenders?

Lots of zip ties in the back, and as for controller cables, we bought ~100 of those velcro straps for cords so we can wrap them up for neat display storage without wrapping the cords around the controllers. We also have extension cords for all corded controllers since the consoles don't exactly come out of the unit!

>Where can I get the display case?

It's a piece of furniture so it's a bit expensive, but it's definitely what we wanted after searching for a couple weeks! It's on Amazon

>You could have just emulated it all!

I love having and playing on the original consoles, but emulation is also awesome!

>Where's the Virtual Boy?

It doesn't connect to the TV so I didn't feel the need to get it for this project, but I DO want it for my collection! (Also kids should wait a bit before they play with a 3D device, even the 3DS)

>Where's Nintendo's even older console, the Color TV-Game?/Where's the 64DD?

Those were released Japan only, but I might still want to get them! I believe the controller and the console for Color TV-Game are both one unit, and space is limited, so it might be tough to integrate it if I want to get it!

>Where's the TV? CRT??

Mounted on the wall above the mantle. Sorry, no CRT...yet.

>PHOTOSHOPPED!/I swear I saw this before!

lol why would anyone photoshop this? Definitely real. I'll provide a few more images if I can. And definitely my setup! Though I'm sure I'm not the first to do something similar.

>lol fake niece

The niece and story are real, but if I'm being perfectly honest this is more for me than her haha

EDIT: moved the book to the top:
I recommend you read "Farewell Anatolia" by Dido Sotiriou on the subject. Very good read.
http://www.amazon.com/Farewell-Anatolia-Modern-Greek-Writers/dp/9600404798/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1370208512&sr=1-1&keywords=farewell+anatolia

First and Foremost, I am not an expert on these subjects, but from what I gather I tried to pass on the information that I was able to gather over the years. Please feel free to correct me if they are incorrect or incomplete. So here it goes:

First off, I did not say anything about Ataturk and this protest is not in the name of Ataturk.

Armenians, Kurds, Turks, Left wing, Right wing, anarchist, socialist, capitalist, young, old, middle aged, women, men and people from all parts of the society are joining this protest.

Please lets not make this about the Armenian genocide. Please, please, please let's not do that.

Also, again I am not there but from what I understand, AKP party got 51% of votes. Turkey has a multi party system hence the left wing who got 49% of the votes were all scattered and couldn't get seats in the parliament. I guess, you have to have a certain percentage of the votes before you can be represented in the parliament.

I am not too sure about the semantics since I really don't know their system all that well. From what I read, he got votes because people wanted Economic Stability and turned a blind eye to the Islamist Nature of the AKP party thinking he wouldn't go as far as he has now.

That aside: Turkey is the first democratic country in the region way ahead of its peers because of Ataturk's vision so he deserves credit for that, this is the reason why I think it will be a while before Turks are ready question some of the decisions that Ataturk has made. They are simply put, not ready.

They are still trying to have a stable democracy and hold onto what was constructed by him decades ago. The only way to hold on to that is by holding onto the image of Ataturk and the decisions he has made. They are unable to move forward without that this structure guiding them. There are no other muslim countries with a stable democracy in the region that Turkey can copy from or be inspired by.

All they have is what Ataturk started. Ataturk only put the seeds down and it was up to the people to grow it into a better democracy. Instead Turkey went backwards. This is why people are protesting today, to go forward and stop going backwards.

Once a stable democracy is established, than the society will be ready to look back and question past events. Turkey is nowhere near that. Well, maybe with the current events taking place, they are moving towards that. Hopefully.

There are a lot of other problems with the treatment of minorities and freedom of speech in Turkey which are more pressing. All these things need to be fixed before Turkey as a society can judge the events that took place during WW1 without prejudice. I dont think it has precedence for them right now. There are more pressing issues that needs attention.

Asking them to drop everything and debate whether Armenian Genocide happened or not is asking a 1st grader to take a Calc test.

Also, a lot of Turks will argue that Turkey was not yet a country when the events took place. Turkey was founded in 1923. Turkey is considered a separate country than Ottoman Empire.

They consider themselves as entirely separate. The reason for that is because the Ottoman Sultan signed the peace treaties that allowed for the country to be divided up by Allied Forces. The country did get occupied by France, Greece and Britain. This is a serious betrayal hence why the Turkish Republic sees itself as a separate entity. Ottoman Empire was gone, consumed up by the Allied Forces. It was now a puppet government. Sultan serving for the Allied Forces.

Turkey was founded after these events took place and there was an Independence War. The Turkish Republic that was found is an entirely different country with contrasting views from that of the Ottoman Empire. In addition, the Sultan was actively fighting against Ataturk's reforms and army with the support of Allied Forces. Mehmed the VI fled the country with British Forces once Ataturk's movement begin to gain momentum, after winning a battle against Greek army.

So you see Turkish Republic was at some point fighting against the Ottoman Empire hence the separation in Turks mind that actions of Ottomans are not that of the Turkish Republics and that they are entirely separate entities.

They don't consider themselves as the extension of the Empire into the current times. Their language, alphabet, government structure and culture is very different (i.e. women rights).

Also, to note Ataturk was merely a general in the army during WW1 and took orders from his superiors like anyone else. So it is also a misstep to blame a genocide solely to one person, Ataturk. What about the sultan of the era? Who, btw lived out his last years in UK. How about that? (I am not talking about Ertugrul Osman, who would have become the Sultan had the empire not fell. Ertugrul lived in NY about 60 years than was invited back to Turkey in the 90s which is where he died).

This separation of Ottoman Empire from Turkish Republic is one of the basis why Ataturk created the state policy to deny it. (again, i am not agreeing or disagreeing. just writing down my understanding of the situation with the limited research that I have done on the topic. Whether it was right or wrong should be discussed and altered later when the society is ready to look at it without prejudice which won't happen for a while.).

Also, I don't have knowledge of the treatments of Armenians after the Independence War so I can't say anything about that.

That aside, the deaths of Armenians is a horrible thing to have happened regardless of who is responsible. And it is not the only brutality that had occurred during the era either which should be addressed. A lot of civilians died unnecessarily whether in the hands of military or nature. People died.

I recommend you read "Farewell Anatolia" by Dido Sotiriou on the subject. Very good read.

http://www.amazon.com/Farewell-Anatolia-Modern-Greek-Writers/dp/9600404798/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1370208512&sr=1-1&keywords=farewell+anatolia

Okay, ironic is a slippery word and it's meaning is very specific and a bit esoteric. However, like "pretentious", many people nowadays use it to describe something a little different from what it means. In this use, I meant it in the sense that kids wear and purchase things that they don't necessarily genuinely like, but wear for a value of humour.

For example, the Three Wolf Shirt gained a lot of popularity in "hipster culture" because it was "cool", but not for the reasons the creators intended. Hip kids who wear it are not especially fans of wolves or The Mountain's other designs but found a special absurdity in this particular design.

So, a GnR shirt might be worn "ironically" by someone who wants to invoke a sense of nostalgia or humour (especially with a more over the top design, like this) but doesn't actually listen to or even respect the band. They wear it strictly for its fashion properties.

This gets really murky when kids who actually love a band like GnR (or Poison, Scorpions, etc.) wears a shirt like this, but wears it in this style. It is very hard to tell when kids are "being ironic" or expressing genuine support. My favorite example of this is the fanny pack. It was originally marketed towards yuppies and soccer moms, then, later on, hipsters started wearing them out of irony. Certain people took this to mean they were "fashionable", so people wore them because they were convenient and stylish. They never were and still aren't, but now you've got all these idiots walking around with fanny packs and no one can tell who's "cool" and who is a nerd.

Moral of story: Don't wear things out of irony because you still look like an idiot even if your friends think it's funny or kitchy.

On the lower end, check out victorinox

pretty comfortable to use, fairly sharp and durable, this is the knife I recommend for most situations

learn how to sharpen and maintain it, and you'll be good to go for a while

Once you get some good use out of it, you might want to upgrade to a nicer knife, and this is where you get stuck with a lot of opinions about who is the best

Japanese, european, hybrid

European knives (wusthof, henckle etc) will have more of a wedge shape (thicker at the top, narrower at the edge) and tend to be heavier

Japanese knives in general have a thinner angle than european ones

I personally like hybrid knives

I recommend going somewhere like Sur La Table and asking them if you can try out their knives, find something comfortable (they will all be very very sharp)

also, read this for reference: http://www.seriouseats.com/2013/12/equipment-the-best-chefs-knives-gift-guide.html

You can get a knife professionally sharpened for a few dollars. I usually take our knives to the farmers market, and there's a guy that will do it for $1 per inch of blade. My main knives are in the $150 range, but a talented sharpener can make just about any knife better than it was new. Typically, less expensive knives come with an angle that's too low for easy cutting (especially delicate foods). A good bladesmith can fix this. When freshly sharp (and for a long time after), my 9" chef's knife will easily slice tomatoes without crushing; the knife simply floats through the item.

You won't need to spend $100 to get a solid knife. The Victoronix Fibrox is a nice blade for under $50. I keep that as a backup and for use at the grill/outdoor kitchen.

Once you've had a knife professionally sharpened, you'll wonder why you didn't do it before.

Hey cannibalking, here's the best thing I can offer; the method that got me to quit, Allen Carr's book 'The Easy Way to Stop Smoking.

I smoked and loved it for 15 years. Then quit for one miserable month in the summer of 2009, then started up again. This spring I decided to quit again, but wanted some help. I did some research, including here on reddit, and found that people seemed to be responding well to this book.

I figured for $10, what's the worst that could happen? Well, it totally worked. I don't want to push it too hard or sound like a shill.....you know what? If you're seriously wanting to quit, PM where you would like it shipped to and I'll just buy it for you so you'll have it like next week sometime.

From the reviews.

>Ms. Clark also provides far more than enough written evidence for the fact that German racial attitudes were far more enlightened than anything in the US or British military at that time. Blacks in the German military were not merely truck drivers or ammunition handlers as in the US generally; they were highly trained for combat and for intelligence gathering, especially in North Africa.

As I said above:

> Not at all. You can do a basic setup simply by gutting a child's toy. That's just getting you a single input, but it's inexpensive and simple to set up.

I mean, I still think this is fake, but getting brainwave input into a project (not necessarily reading desired arm movement, but rather just looking for alpha wave spikes) can be done trivially with junk like this.

u/Gonzobot · 1 pointr/pics

Also, there are literally mind-reading Star Wars toys. I was gonna post https://www.amazon.ca/Star-Wars-Science-Force-Trainer/dp/B001UZHASY as a reply to the guy saying it's "clearly fake" - with a dash of optimism that looks like it could easily be scavenged parts for a basic servo setup, triggered with toy parts, to help move his arm.

When you do a search on Amazon for "lucky charms marshmallows" and navigate to the link for the 40 lb bag, it will automatically toss a "ref" link onto the address for Amazon's tracking purposes. He found the product, and just copied the whole link from the address bar. Here is my "ref" link.
