Here’s my recommendation:

The guitar: this it’s really an excellent guitar, for price you can’t beat that.

The strings: used for The Wall

Additionally you could replace the pick ups depending on your amplifier: with these personally i would not recommend it on the specific strat I recommend for you to buy cause it cost twice the guitar. But if you get one, try to find one second hand!

Also remember its not all in the equipment, you also they way you play the guitar! Learning the proper style of playing can get you a long way!

Now pedals and amps:

I personally think this is the most important no matter what guitar you have, if you put it threw a good amp it really does miracles!

I personally have a Fender M-80 amplifier, the distortion on that amp sound extremely good so I don’t really use disto pedals!! But I do have 2 disto pedals that sound like him,

1: Real Tube Overdrive: this

2: Big Muff: here ya go

3: Definitely get an Echo Pedal thats a must! Any one should do! like this

Just use a decent amplifier, if you already have one it’s probably fine, around 200-300 Watts is great.

Additional links:

This website called Gilmourish is excellent if you want to find the exact correct pedals and techniques! Here: http://www.gilmourish.com

And this video:

this! and this

Hope this helps!

Edit: if you dont have an amplifier, try looking for a second hand Fender amp, either on ebay, craigslist, facebook market place! You can send me a pm if you found one and I could tell you about it!

Edit 2: really depending on your budget I can tell what to get so feel free to pm always happy to help a fellow Floydian.

> WYWH album, Animals, DSoTM, The Wall, and The Final Cut

Great start and awesome albums to get into Floyd. From here, I’d go to Meddle as that is one of my favorite albums. If you like songs like Echoes or One of These Days, I’d go even earlier to Saucerful of Secrets.

Saucerful is their second album and when David Gilmore (guitarist) first joined the band. It has heavy space rock/psychedelic type sounds and songs. I particularly like the songs Let There Be More Light, Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun, and Saucerful of Secrets on that album

It’ll sound very different based on what you’ve already listened to, but Piper at the Gates of Dawn is their original, Syd Barrett-driven album. Interstellar Overdrive, Lucifer Sam, and Astronomy Domineering are all great.

If you haven’t stumbled upon it yet, check out the Live at Pompeii movie. It was recorded before and during their Dark Side of the Moon sessions and is a masterpiece of their early work. It’s a live “concert”/recording they play at Pompeii with no one to watch but their recording crew. My favorite versions of Echoes and One of These Days is on that DVD.

If you’re looking for more about the history of the band and it’s members, I recommend this book as it follows the band from before they formed a band to when Gilmour, Waters, Mason, and Wright formed back up for their performance at Live 8.

Let me know if you have any other questions

Edit: I’ll also add that while I’m not a huge fan of Ummagamma, the live recordings on those are great. Also, Obscured by Clouds is a very interesting album that was written as a soundtrack for a film.

There are excellent tabs books for DSOTM, Wall and WYWH. Also excellent tab books for division bell and on an island.

There really isn't much out there for animals but there are some fairly decent dogs solo transcriptions.

If you are looking for easier stuff check out this book:

Pink Floyd: Easy Guitar with Riffs and Solos https://www.amazon.com/dp/1476815305/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_awd_tqL3wbVFHHFQ0

This one might be good too (somewhat strange mix of songs...):

Ultimate Guitar Play-Along Pink Floyd Book/online audio https://www.amazon.com/dp/0739050443/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_awd_msL3wbYY60PH3

This book looks really cool. Sounds like it comes with slowed down audio and play along parts too which can be really helpful

A lot of people are going to try to be alternative and suggest you start with a more obscure album. My advice would be not to listen to them - doing so can be an alienating experience and put you off a band.

With that in mind, start with The Dark Side of the Moon. It's their most famous album (and my favourite album!), so you're in safe hands with this one.

Once you've familiarised yourself with DSotM, move on to The Wall. This one is mostly the brainchild of Pink Floyd's bassist and main songwriter (until he left in 1985) Roger Waters. It is a semi-autobiographical rock opera with a great story and some great songs to boot. It can be quite a daunting listen at first, so tackle it in chunks and use this guide to help you through the story.

After The Wall, the final definitive step you can take is to listen to Wish You Were Here. You'll find a lot of people that revere this album as their best, and one can see why - it has great songwriting, powerful lyrics and interesting (but very 70's!) production.

Once you've listened to all three of these albums, your next step is entirely up to you. Want to hear Pink Floyd's first and only "psychedelic" album with founding father and acid casualty Syd Barrett? Listen to Piper at the Gates of Dawn.

Do you want to hear Pink Floyd at their softest and most pastoral? Spin Atom Heart Mother, with a 24-minute long title track featuring a full brass ensemble.

Pink Floyd's most varied album, you ask? Dark Side wins that distinction IMO, but Meddle comes a close second. Pay particular attraction to the track Echoes - it's stunning.

Or, alternatively, you can work your way through the discography from beginning to end. Doing so will help you see the band's progression in style over time. Whatever choice you make, you're delving into an incredible band, so enjoy!

YouTube has some great documentaires (like this one ) that is definitely worth checking out.

If you’re looking for a very well done history (and don’t mind reading) id recommend this book. Not only does it detail every song (studio album wise) but also gives great insight to the band at the time of that specific album

In addition to what's been listed.

Their Mortal Remains - more of a coffee table book, but great pictures and history of the band.

Pink Floyd: Their Mortal Remains https://smile.amazon.com/dp/1851779167/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_t3ETCbPPDV6QQ

And a good one to pick up when listening to an album - All the Songs.

It's from an awesome book called Pink Floyd: Press Reports.
It chronicles their career with articles and reviews and interviews from 67-84.

It's a great read.

u/waFFLEz_ · 1 pointr/pinkfloyd

I't might be that particular book, but I'm not sure. The one i got is called Mind Over Matter: The Images of Pink Floyd and is great! you should definantly check it out

u/paranoidbeemer · 1 pointr/pinkfloyd

This book. I can't recommend it highly enough... I've been pimping it all over this subreddit. It definitely takes some of the shine off the individuals in the band - they all have their faults - but it only made me love the band more.

Fantastic book. I can also highly recommend Comfortably Numb, a newer biography.

u/JohnnyCastaway · 12 pointsr/pinkfloyd

This can be found on David Gilmour's Remember That Night: Live At The Royal Albert Hall. It's a terrific concert, and I highly recommend the DVD set.

u/alb1234 · 1 pointr/pinkfloyd

Hmmm.. I guess you didn't know that $120 is what it costs brand spakin' new? I just purchased the DSoTM, WYWH & The Wall Immerision sets in March. I actually got a nice deal - I can't remember why. But, $120 is definitely the cost of a brand new set.

The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra ♫ The Symphonic Pink Floyd https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IBGeex66_t8

https://www.amazon.co.uk/London-Philharmonic-Orchestra-plays-music/dp/B0000040UZ and that also looks like a Roger Dean cover.

All quite interesting to add to the collection.

u/burros_n_churros · 1 pointr/pinkfloyd

It wasn't a live performance: https://www.amazon.com/Departed-Music-Motion-Picture/dp/B000J3FBVG but might have been inspired to record in studio after that performance?

Edit: See the track now on Live in Berlin, can't listen at the moment but likely the one you are referencing.

Hey! Thanks, I am currently mic'ing my acoustics, but that's just because my Acoustic-Electric has a broken output jack right now.

Here's my full signal path for my Acoustics:

Ibanez Talman Acoustic (with broken Output Jack lol - Radioshack 33-3004 Dynamic Microphone (with foam Windscreen) - Lexicon Alpha Audio Interface - Cubase 5 (with Compression & EQ as insert effects, and a reverb send effect.)

From there it's all about Mic placement and subtle changes to Compression and EQ. I like to position my mic right where the neck meets the body, to the left of the Soundhole.

All the rhythm guitar after the start of the 2nd verse ("And did they get you to trade") is Double Tracked, and panned 60-40 L and 40-60 R.

Hope this helps!

I read the book "Comfortably Numb: The Inside Story of Pink Floyd". It's very interesting.

The one I see on Amazon is 4-star with 69 reviews. Why do you think the same thing would be better from another website?

u/jjmoreta · 2 pointsr/pinkfloyd

From the link, scroll to the bottom to see the lightning deals.

As usual, no detail on prices/value until the sale starts. In 2012, they were offered for $88.

Links provided may not be the exact product offered, I would recommend going through the Lightning Deals list.

800 real beds were used for the artwork on AMLOR. A real bed was also used as a "plane" crashing on the AMLOR tour

Two giant statues were used for the artwork on Division bell, you can actually see them in the movie they used on High Hopes, during the Pulse tour.

Source, a book I have from Storm Thorgerson, available here : https://www.amazon.com/Mind-Over-Matter-Images-Floyd/dp/1846097630, and also recently the Pink Floyd official Twitter account
