Bingo. Most of my knowledge of the World's Fair comes from Devil In the White City, which is an amazing book.

>Ahhhhh oh my gosh you 'Muricans really will deep fry anything.

As someone who lives in a city where an honest-to-god socialist sits on the city council it's always funny to hear things like that..

What I mean--if you're a Trump enthusiast, or if you live in a small town, or if you do manual labor, or (perhaps?) live in the South you're probably the sort of person who's likely to a state fair and eat something deep-fried. If you live in a coastal metropolis or work at a tech firm or wouldn't feel out of place in a sport coat the idea of eating a lot of those foods is probably nauseating, not to mention the notion of going to a fair is totally alien.

US social heterogeneity is entrenched and profound but our discourse about it is mostly tacit. Times are weird in America. Dated but relevant.

Well, right now I'm reading Bloodlands for a history course, so that should be... uh, inspiring?

Then again, just seeing the rules, I would have to be careful about selections here.

I just finished reading this book on Chinese history and highly recommend it to anyone looking for a primer on the subject. One interesting fact that could be used by u/Kimiimar0 in the next version is that the voyages (all of them) were led by a Palace Eunuch called Zheng He who became a part of the bureaucracy after being captured from his native place in South-Eastern China, being castrated and being packed off to Beijing as a 11 year old.

There is a whole chapter in here about pooping in space. It is interesting and hilarious. There is also a whole chapter about sexing in space too.

lol like you would read if I gave you actual sources fine here go buy this book then. I would recommend it if you're really interested to learn more but you don't sound like you're.

If anyone wants to read more about this and similar phenomena, read Outliers: The Story of Success by Malcolm Gladwell

It's surprisingly accurate, too. You just have to imagine green mesh on the other side instead. Like this.

Hey, we don't hate dogs that much. They just happen to be good test subjects.

I just remembered if you like reading about knights, medieval politics, and stuff then The Crusades trilogy is really good. It is largely fiction and conjecture since there is not a lot of sources that have survived to this day but it is set against a historical backdrop and a lot of the historical events in the book are based on actual historical records.

Just a little advice if you have a rainy day and nothing to do or read.

There's a very good reason that I own this.

I would recommend the book ["the Lucifer effect"] ( http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/0812974441/ref=redir_mdp_mobile/182-1403865-1508715) to anyone interested in the psychology of evil. It's truly eye opening

Haha sorry! I was making a lame joke. Exorbitant Privilege is the title of a book by economist Barry Eichengreen. In it, he argues that the status of the American Dollar as a reserve currency means that it makes its goods and exports more expensive to export and thus damages its economy. In tradeoff, it acquires the ability to essentially borrow as much as it requires to finance its deficits.

In the same sense, I think the status of the United States as the sole superpower is a privilege. It allows the United States to dictate policy around the world as it sees fit with less input from other nations, certainly less than any other superpower in the history of the world has. However, that comes with the implicit responsibility for the state of the world, including what wars break out and how nations interact with one another. As the foremost state in the world order, other states will blame you for whatever the outcome of a situation is. Thus you are indeed damned if you do, damned if you don't.

Now I've been out of Polandball for a while, so in return I don't know and am curious what "pulling a De Gaulle" is!

Hey, don't go around saying things like that... otherwise they might not want to join.

u/hotbuilder · 2 pointsr/polandball

Well, you could start off with the book and the movie is coming to Netflix in April(?).
