Hey so I use Small $40 musician ear plugs called Earasers
I found them at Guitar Center, and their the best/most expensive ones there. $40 for one pair is pretty expensive since other brands are half the price, but I really swear by these. I like the simple design and its super easy to put in, take out, and clean. And since its high fidelity earplugs, you can talk to people with them on and the music sounds great. It makes the bass sound good and the high pitched sounds less sharp and painful. But they are just for concerts, because I tried playing drums with these earplugs and it didn’t have enough decibel protection, but for a concert its perfect since you have distance from the band to the crowd.
So if you end up not liking the other brands out there because of their shapes or fit, these Earasers are definitely worth the money. With other ones, sometimes you don’t feel it go enough to plug your ears all the way. But with Earasers, they slide in and fit really snug, and you can adjust how far their in your ear according to how loud you want it.
Because of the texture of the plugs, it easily slides into the ear but it also grabs any earwax with it, so be prepared for some earwax when you take them out. Maybe I have an over abundance of earwax, but what I do is before a concert, I’ll put in the earplugs then take them out and clean all the earwax off and put them back in, basically cleaning my ear and preventing any earwax from being bothersome throughout the concert. Sorry for the TMI haha, but I have been rocking the same pair of Earasers for years and its honestly one of the best purchases ever!
And I don’t work for the company or anything lol, I just go to shows like once a month. I use size Small and anyone else I’ve seen try them said Small fits for them too. Safe travels!
Not so much cartoons, but Nerf Herder has a lot of good material you could probably use. I'd recommend 'Mr. Spock,' 'Manatee,' or 'She's a Sleestak.'
Another option I could recommend is an album a buddy of mine bought called Faux Real. A bunch of bands I've never heard of cover the songs that fictional bands play. http://www.wired.com/2014/03/mystik-spiral-dr-teeth/
John Cougar Concentration Camp has a song called 'Half Assed Jedi' which is right up there with 'A New Hope' since that was on your list already.
I think a lot of Aquabats could count, particularly songs off Charge!! I'd recommend 'Nerd Alert,' 'Stuck in the Movies,' or 'Awesome Forces.'
I think there's a bunch of internet famous songs you could cover that would go over well also. Lemon Demon's 'The Ultimate Showdown' is one that comes to mind right away.
There's one of those lame corporate pop punk bands that does a song called 'Hey Mario' about the plumber that's actually pretty catchy if you don't mind something on the pop side of things.
I know there's way more could think of, I'll give it more thought and edit my post with updates.
EDIT: That was quick, there was one right at the back of my mind
Saturday Morning Cartoons' Greatest Hits: http://www.amazon.com/Saturday-Morning-Cartoons-Greatest-Hits/dp/B000002OYG
Also if you were comfortable covering a little bit of rap there's some great options also. Weird Al's 'White and Nerdy' and anything by Starbomb comes to mind.
Yep. Sometimes a CD on Amazon is cheaper than buying it digital. Its not punk but just for comparisons sake (and to expand your horizons with amazing music), check out the price difference between the CD and download of Glenn Miller's Greatest Hits. The CD is 6.99, and the MP3 album is 8.99. Or check out Recipe for Hate, the CD is 7.99, and the MP3 album is 9.49. Social Distortion s/t is 6.99 vs 9.99. Plus on Amazon, a lot of these CDs include a free MP3 version of the album anyway, so you don't even have to transfer it to your computer when you get the CD.
I also don't know if thrift shops count, but they can be a great source for punk music. I used to go to shows at a punk venue that was two doors down from a thrift shop. There was usually an awesome selection of punk CDs there.
> I'm teaching myself how to use a drum machine
Check out Hydrogen (I know it says for Linux, but it also works on Windows and OSX), which is the best free computer-based drum machine I know of. LMMS is pretty cool, too, but it's more geared towards techno. Still, if you want to make chiptune punk, worth checking out.
Drum Programming: A Complete Guide to Program and Think Like a Drummer is also an awesome book to program beatboxes (or Hydrogen) to sound natural. I used that, back when I had a guitar.
I'll comment here too and mention a few that I've got that are good. mostly hardcore punk -
misery obscura - the photography of eerie von - must have for any misfits fans. great pictures and anecdotes throughout.
this music leaves stains - great and only top-to-bottom chronicle of the misfits.
get in the van - awesome diary of henry rollins on tour with the mighty black flag.
spray paint the walls - history of black flag.
raymond pettibon - the books (1978 -1985). OOP and very hard to find but a lot of amazing and disturbing art from a fantastic artist from the scene.
fucked up + photocopied - lots of great art from the hardcore scene.
touch and go: the complete hardcore punk zine 79-83 - name says it all.
radio silence: a selected visual history of american hardcore music - tons of great photos of rare stuff from the era.
I mean yeah, for a decent one. If you’re interested in vinyl, but don’t wanna blow a bunch of money on something you might not care about, try asking older relatives if they have one somewhere. A lot of people have great record players just collecting dust.
If that’s not an option, just get a Crosley. They’re super entry level tables, but they’re relatively cheap and pretty user friendly. I found this one on Amazon for $60: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01IWIBJ6K/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_WvtXAb7PMJEMN
One of my favorites is Spit for Athena. They actually played at my bachelor party. My dad did not enjoy the show.
Track from their first album
Another live clip (Not sure why he's wearing a dress, but whatevs.)
My favorite of their albums (Though Tammy is good too. And their self-titled. And I like Extermina but the singer hates it because the record label rerecorded the bass lines without informing him or something? So he redid all the songs on Piss is Perfect in blisteringly-fast style.)
Acoustic version of a great song.
Punk is whatever you want it to be, and the guy standing next to you will have a different opinion.
Watch the documentary film "American Hardcore." It is based on a rather half-assed book written by a guy named Steven Blush. His attempt was to underscore the tribal nature of 1980s hardcore punk in the US. The book has been criticized for being mostly a work of opinion, especially by actual scene makers with differing opinions, but his research (done in a pre-Internet era) is mostly solid and seems like it would dovetail nicely with what you're trying to do. If not, it could also be one more source for your works cited page.
Good luck.
Short Music for Short People, it's a compilation, but its pretty awesome and super fast. Fat Wreck put it out.

Destroy All Movies is the quintessential tome about punks on film, meticulously cataloguing pretty much every appearance of a punk in a movie.
My favorite punx are girl punx, so I'm really into Ladies & Gentlemen, the Fabulous Stains. Plus, that Black Randy cameo is a killer! There's a movie from a couple years back called We Are the Best that I HIGHLY recommend to all punx.
Plus, Derek Jarman's Jubilee is one of the greatest movies of all damn time.
[Dance of Days] (http://www.amazon.com/Dance-Days-Decades-Nations-Capital/dp/1888451440/ref=pd_sim_sbs_b_4) is an amazing book. It is focused purely on the DC scene and how it evolved over 20 years. It is a must read for any fans Dischord records.
This book exhaustively covers punks in film through the year 2000. From documentaries to movies with punk rocker characters to movies with punks acting in them to movies with a dude with a mohawk as an extra in the corner of a crowd shot in one scene. From big budget Hollywood to New York art underground.
Its a huge coffee table book styled encyclopedia that also features amazing interviews with directors, actors, and all kinds of people involved in the punk/film axis.
Its been out of print for a few years now, so its expensive. But its still worth it.

Doesnt even mention that there is an awesome book about just this!?
https://www.amazon.com/Destroy-Movies-Complete-Guide-Punks/dp/1606993631
Dance of Days Covers the DC scene from the late 70's through the early 90's. Great read if you are into that scene.
Lend? It's 8 bucks here; 7.99 here; 7.25 here; and $5.49 here. It's well worth the purchase.
As a musician, I don't hate on anyone for trying to make some money to live. Sure, this is overkill and so is this but it's not like they are 'underground'. I just appreciate them for what they used to be and what they contributed to music.
American Hardcore is my personal favorite.
That and Get in the Van are good for the gritty reality of touring bands
>and so is [this] (http://www.amazon.com/Rockabilia-Misfits-Air-Freshener/dp/B0028SBXZI)
Ahh, smells like spinal remains.
If you are looking for more information on the topic, there is a book called "Destroy all Movies" that has a definitive listing of Punk Rock related films. It is available on Amazon.
