I should add that Jung's writing is notoriously challenging to interpret, even for those with PhDs in psychology. If you're not familiar with reading philosophy, then you'll probably struggle a bit with Jung. Jung was my introduction to dense philosophical reading, and it was definitely challenging to decipher, requiring multiple reads to "fully" understand. Almost every sentence is packed with meaning, and it can take years of reflection to fully understand what he’s trying to say. I felt like I understood him completely the first time through, but realized that there was so much more to his work after subsequent examinations.

I was 15 or so when I discovered him, and at the time I thought his ideas where flawless. 11 years later, I’ve uncovered some questionable aspects of his theories (particularly pertaining to archetypes), but I still think he’s absolutely brilliant, perhaps the Einstein of psychology.

Depending on what we discover about the universe in the coming years, his theories will either prove to be a century ahead of his time, or to be pseudoscientific nonsense. The collective unconscious and synchronicity have profound implications about the nature of consciousness and the universe. Jung is controversial because many of his theories are rooted in deeply spiritual concepts.

Before you dive into his original writings, I recommend doing some research on his key concepts first. There are several primers on Jungian psychology that are far more accessible than his direct work. I recommend this one: https://www.amazon.com/Primer-Jungian-Psychology-Calvin-Hall/dp/0452011868/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?keywords=primer+jungian+psychology&qid=1562269705&s=gateway&sr=8-1

Here's a few Jungian concepts worth checking out. Keep in mind that Jung's work has been interpreted in several different ways, so these descriptions are just my own interpretations, and are not necessarily correct. I'd recommend checking out with the wiki for each concept as a starting point, and then reading his autobiography.

  1. The Anima and Animus (of course) - the feminine and masculine dimensions of the human psyche (respectively) occurrent in every person.
  2. The Collective Unconscious - the shared, unconscious, psychological framework of humanity. Can be interpreted genetically or in a more spiritual way.
  3. Synchronicity - definitely one of Jung's most controversial ideas, but also one of his most interesting. Essentially it's "meaningful coincidence"
  4. Typology - Jung's theory of personality, which is the basis of the Myers-Briggs personality test. Includes the concepts of introversion and extroversion, which Jung originated.
  5. The Shadow - this is the dark, animalistic side of the human psyche present in all of us. It's our base, mostly unconscious animalistic tendencies, and the source of all "evil". According to Jung, we all have the capacity to do horrible things, and controlling those impulses requires a recognition and awareness of one's shadow. In order to fight your inner demons, you must first be aware of them.
  6. Individuation - one could say this is Jung's concept of "enlightenment". It refers to the process of becoming fully aware of your unconscious, and integrating it into your personality.
  7. Archetypes - this concept is interwoven with the Shadow, Anima, Animus, and the collective unconscious. I interpret it as shared psychological constructs and dispositions. I think Jung takes the idea of archetypes too far, but I still believe that it has merit when considered moderately.

As for original works, I started with his autobiography "Memories, Dreams, Reflections". I think it's an excellent introduction to his mind.

Ugh I know your pain, I'm 5'3" so getting a good spot for GA shows is always a major operation. With the right strategy you should definitely get there though, out of the ~70 shows I've seen I've only missed being on the rail three or four times.

You're on the right track getting there as early as possible, I'm not sure how big that venue is but ~9:30 should be early enough to give you a good chance of being at the front of the queue. Maybe not first in line, but close enough.

Re: the cold, you might want to pick up some of these chemical hand warmers. I stuffed a couple of them in my coat when I queued all day to see Jack White in January 2015, they pretty much kept me from freezing to death.

One of the best things about queuing for hours before a show is making friends with other cool people. When doors open go right into the performance space & grab a spot near those people, usually they'll be nice enough to hold your spot while you run to the bathroom, hit the merch stand etc. Even still I'd recommend skipping the coat check if possible, again I don't know that specific venue but in my experience those things are always a clusterfuck & major time sinks, the longer you're away from your spot the higher the chance some dickhead will muscle their way in. Besides, if you get a spot on the rail you can just put your coat on the floor in front of you.

I hope these suggestions are helpful, good luck!

I'll check when I get home then reply for you. And yeah I agree! I think that's such an underrated capability for headphones. Also while we're on the subject you should check these out! http://www.amazon.com/Monoprice-108323-Headphone-Gold-Plated-Accessories/dp/B007SP2CO2
I just bought them for my girlfriend after reading a million great things about them. The sound guy on the youtube channel "Tested" was in a video they put out not too too long ago and all he did was rave about headphones. I learned a ton of shit from watching it, but I'm most glad that I learned of these headphones. Simply the best sound you're going to ever get out of headphones less than $50. Granted they aren't the best headphones ever, but to spend $27ish and get this kind of sound is simply unheard of for me. Perfect to give to a SO or good friend.

Oh sure, look it up. If I were smart, that's what I would have done. ;-)

To save other people the trouble:

Pablo Honey

The Bends

OK Computer

Kid A - due to the lack of singles (and B-sides), this might actually be the worst collector's edition, which is amazing because this album is awesome awesome.

Amnesiac

Hail To The Thief

In Rainbows

I guess it almost comes down to which album you like the best. I'm a big fan of The Bends, so I enjoy that pop driven second disc more than somebody who tuned in after Kid A (for example). What do you like, OP?

u/roadghost24 · 3 pointsr/radiohead

You mean this one? I for myself actually think that's the best Radiohead poster out there. Sadly the band doesn't have that many great posters (or merch in general) to begin with, but this In Rainbows one is also pretty cool imo. You like Atoms For Peace too? They have this poster in their store. Outside of that, I don't really know where to get posters that are worth something.

Return it and get one of these; $30 more but won't destroy your vinyl the way the ceramic cartridge/red 'needle' players will. Sounds better as well. What you use to play the vinyl matters as much as the vinyl you play if you intend to enjoy for years to come.

u/NewAccount1928 · 1 pointr/radiohead

Yeah, it should be. I'm real excited about it!

And about the socializing, it'll be fine I think. I went to see Radiohead the first time during their last tour. Both nights I saw them, the people were relatively nice. People were reasonable, as long as they're not drunk. Shouldn't be anyone that drunk in GA anyway. I reckon I could get someone to hold my spot and at least hold small talk.

I really like your idea with not bringing the bag. The only class I'll have is just going to be a discussion section for calculus so I'll at most need a paper and a pencil, then my food, phone/charger, and wallet.

About ear protection, I have some of these headphones with these tips which might be good for noise suppression. Not sure if it's worth possibly losing them though. Your call really.

I REALLY REALLY appreciate the tips. Thank you so much.

Cheapest: Audio Technica AT-LP60 ($99, $129 for the USB version)

Sorta cheap, sorta expensive: U-Turn Orbit Basic ($179, $249 with a built in preamp, plus you can customize it with different cartridges, colors, platters, etc. but it will come at a higher cost)

Best of the cheap: Audio Technica AT-LP120 ($299)

After you get a turntable, you need speakers and (of course) records. If you go for the no built in preamp version of the Orbit, then you need a preamp. I recommend this preamp and these bookshelf speakers for your setup.

Happy listening!

EDIT: Another tip, DO NOT BUY ANY TURNTABLES UNDER $100. Those turntables are cheaply made and will go through your records incredibly fast. Also, DO NOT BUY ALL IN ONE VINYL/CD/CASSETTE UNITS. Like the cheap turntables, these will go through your records very fast.

Brands to stay away from: Crosley, ION Audio, Jensen, 1byone

Movie: Rogue One -- Sorry, I don't see many movies. However, I liked this one better than Force Awakens. There were fewer "on the nose" moments, and the pacing was excellent.

Book: Read & Burn: A book about Wire -- This is about the useful musical group, not the useful strands of metal. Interviews and observations contribute to a deeper understanding of the many twists and turns of Wire's soon-to-be 40-year recording career (the recent albums from 2011 are not covered, I believe -- haven't made it to the absolute end of the book yet). The 1980s aside, it's amazing that they have produced so many worthwhile albums given their inner turmoil and acts of self-sabotage. My friend and I saw them in Lexington, KY, recently, and they were absolutely amazing.

Thanks dude! I'm using a "Bass Big Muff Pi". Great pedal for the price, I love it. Makes my bass sound amazing.

For great audiophile quality headphones for cheap, I love my Sennheiser HD280s
great for Radiohead with all the layers, especially on KOL and In Rainbows

This looks awesome. I love this kind of extended criticism. Though they don't have very good reviews I thought the 33 1/3rd's dedicated to Kid A and OK Computer were at least worthwhile - you'd probably find them interesting if you haven't read them already.

Yea... getting a physical copy of most of these items is really hard. Most live recordings are pure bootlegs with no cooperation with the band (at least most of the better ones) and, as such, see no physical release because they can't really be legally marketed and sold for a profit.

That being said, while I have probably 40-50 fully recorded concerts of a delightful quality, I own none of them physically. The two physical items I own are:

  • TKoL From The Basement - DVD, because I live in America (btw, did they ever get that PAL issue sorted out with the Blu-Rays?)
  • Radiohead: The Astoria London Live - DVD, the other item I have. A classic and excellent gig, played about halfway between Pablo Honey and the Bends. It has the live Iron Lung that made it onto the Bends (only Thom's vocals got dubbed over for its "recording"). It also has some beauties like Maquiladora and Blow Out. All in all, solid show and a solid DVD. Recommend it.

Then I have the other classics like Meeting People is Easy, Seven Television Commercials, etc. but none of those are really live recordings, iirc.

Quite a few books have been referenced in interviews - here's some of the ones I think I remember. They're all very good books despite any association with Radiohead, by the way.

I just searched for Radiohead and viewed all albums. Most of them are cover albums like lullabies and Strung Out On X, but these three were all right next to each other. You can see the pre-order price button and release date on individual item pages too, like this one for IN RAINBOWS:
http://smile.amazon.com/dp/B01F0K1WQ0

u/Sye024 · 10 pointsr/radiohead

I'm really hoping that it's only physical. The digital re-release of In Rainbows is still May 6th.

u/Pro_Ice · 23 pointsr/radiohead

This was also the date back catalog transferred to XL is supposed to return online (according to Amazon).
