Definitely check out Awaken Online, The Gam3, Snow Crash, and Off to Be the Wizard.

Also, I hope it's cool that I say this because it's free from Amazon this week, but my novel Full Dive is definitely similar. It's got the futuristic virtual reality city and everything.

But yeah, too many great books out there to count! Check out this list at Goodreads, which has enough great books to keep you reading for a long time :)

Since you like RC Bray, I also strongly recommend "Expeditionary Forces" It's so so so entertaining. And just as fun in my opinion as Ready Player One while also handling space exploration in a really cool way!

Yeah I love my office. Probably one of my favorite places to be. Old pics of the full thing here: https://imgur.com/gallery/jhHAv

Those little floating shelves are the best things I've found for keeping everything looking clean and not cluttered. They're kind of flimsy as far as shelves go but they look nice. You can get one size here: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00OZJ8YMS/ They used to have more but I can't find other sizes lately.

I really pieced it together with no real plans the first time but I put a lot more thought into my current setup. Lay it all out in a way that looks good and gives you plenty of room to display stuff before you start sticking anything to the walls.

It's pretty easy to build a Raspberry Pi for retro gaming. I have built 3 of them recently: 1 for myself, and 2 for family members.

First thing you'll need is the Raspberry Pi itself. You can get it for as cheap as $35, but that's just the system board. No power cord, SD card, or even a case. So I recommend getting this kit for $70.

https://www.amazon.com/CanaKit-Raspberry-Complete-Starter-Kit/dp/B01C6Q2GSY

It comes with everything you'll need: the system board, a case, 32 GB SDcard, HDMI cable, etc. This is the latest model, the Raspberry Pi 3. It has 4 USB ports for controllers, wifi, ethernet, even bluetooth. You'll also need controllers. The Raspberry Pi works best with Xbox and Playstation controllers. You'll have to use USB controllers, but I've read that the new Xbox One S controllers work with Bluetooth. Hell, you can even use your phone! If the Raspberry Pi is connected to your Wifi, just open up Chrome, enter the IP address, and BAM! Touch screen controller.

Next, you'll need RetroPie. This is a pre-made image for the Raspberry Pi. It has all the emulators and GUI you'll need. All you do is supply the ROMs. You can download the latest RetroPie build from here.

https://retropie.org.uk/

Next is the ROMs. I downloaded all the ROMs from EmuParadise.

https://www.emuparadise.me/

This part will take some time since you need to download the game individually, but you can find any game you are looking for. Even rare prototype versions of unreleased games for any system you can think of.

Finally, here's a good tutorial for putting it all together. Hope this helps!

I can't believe no one has said this one yet:

Off to Be the Wizard

Description:

>
Martin Banks is just a normal guy who has made an abnormal discovery: he can manipulate reality, thanks to reality being nothing more than a computer program. With every use of this ability, though, Martin finds his little “tweaks” have not escaped notice. Rather than face prosecution, he decides instead to travel back in time to the Middle Ages and pose as a wizard.

>What could possibly go wrong?

>An American hacker in King Arthur’s court, Martin must now train to become a full-fledged master of his powers, discover the truth behind the ancient wizard Merlin…and not, y’know, die or anything.

It was a great read and there are two more books after (with the next in production now). The sequels are not as good as the first but I still enjoyed them very much. :)

Check out “the Impossible Fortress” by Jason Rekulak.

It’s not set in any sort of sci-fi universe or video game like RPO or Armada, but it’s chalk full of 80’s Pop Culture and video game design.

It’s really good and I highly recommend it.

Impossible Fortress

Can I get a link bro?

Edit: [Link for the time constrained](Extra Life Coin Quarter - Ready Player One - Bronze https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07BWQ8WW4/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_Rlb6Ab3G9A3NS)

I don’t like how it has RPO on the back :/

[These on the other hand](Funko Keys: Ready Player One-3PK-Green, Clear, Copper, Multicolor https://www.amazon.com/dp/B079TQBBGH/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_Lnb6Ab45MTKBM) would fit my collection rather well...

that looks sweet. I just finished a book I liked as much as RPO. It's free today, too. https://www.amazon.com/Virtual-Heaven-redux-Taylor-Kole-ebook/dp/B07VZTXLRJ

I’ve recently been enjoying “The Gam3” series by Cosimo Yap : it was recommended to me after I finished RP1 and I was looking for something new.

While it’s not the same as RP1 I’ve found it to be an amazing read - loads of depth to the world(s) in it and just really draws you in.

Description from Amazon
> The Earth is changing. The alien invasion brought social upheaval, advanced technology, and an armada of peacekeeping robots. But Alan, a college student pursuing a now-useless degree, cares little about all of this. He has only one thing on his mind: the Game.
>
> A fully immersive virtual reality, the Game appears to be a major part of the invading civilization. Alan can't wait to play, recklessly diving into the digital universe. Soon though, Alan realizes the Game is anything but simple, and the stakes are higher than he ever imagined.

Yeah! I actually saw your post and was inspired to do it myself. The neck thing is actually some weird gadget to hold your smartphone so you can watch videos. Here is the link the product.

You can get the vest here

All you need is a vector graphic of Excalibur but gold and you should be good on that end.

> The movie had zero impact. It was a meaningless CG fest.

I doubt that RPO the novel had "societal impact" other than people becoming fans. In contrast, a serious novel like Atlas Shrugged had societal impact. Ready Player One only has entertainment value; it's not a philosophical work.

If a Ready Player One movie were to have societal impact - a movie with philosophical content - it probably would have ended up being a box office bomb. Not everything can be Blade Runner 2049, which is one of the greatest movies of all time but was also a bomb relative to its huge budget.

u/authorTaylorKole · 1 pointr/readyplayerone

just republished today I had tremendous crossover support from RPO fans
