Carbon rod. I joined the two pieces with a 3D-printed bushing around a ¼-20 stainless bolt, nesting into another 3D-printed bushing with a thermoset insert. This means that the staff can be broken down for storage or transport and that a camera can be mounted at half- or full-length.
LED strip.
This is the one that I used, but the radius of the rod is tight enough that the waterproofing rubber split and peeled off a bit. If I were making another one, I would go with the non-waterproof version. Either way, sheathing the whole pole in heat-shrink is probably a good move. I used this in 1-1/2 inch but smaller woul've worked.
To allow the staff to break in two and still work, I cut the strip and soldered on MT-30s via short wire leads. Worked great!
The camera is an insta360 One X. It's fine for what it is. Good for serious videography. The Samsung Gear 360 looks like a very nice, chesper alternative, and has video looping, so it'd be great in a "dashcam" role.
Powergrips work fairly well. They aren't too bad for most people to get their feet in and out of. Though, it was much harder for my spouse than for me - nearly to where he hated using them. I've also used heel slings which work well too. There are other heel support pedals that I've seen recommended, too. One was from TerraTrike and the person didn't use the front strap, just the heel support. https://shop.terratrike.com/Strapped-Heel-Support-Pedal-p/tt000024. (Probably much more than you wanted.)
I found another alternative to Powergrips awhile back but I can't see to remember the name. I know they were adjustable and available in different colors. I was thinking they would actually work better for me. I'll try to find them and share when I do. I completely agree with clipless causing repetitive injury.
EDIT: Got it! It's called Hold Fast. You can see them on Amazon here: https://www.amazon.com/Hold-Fast-Bicycle-Retention-Straps/dp/B00UGR94TU Looks like you can use them on most platform pedals. They also look more easily adjustable than Power Grips. You can also read more on their website: https://holdfastordie.com/
> You could fit road bike tires on both of those right?
I don't understand the question. They both have 20" front wheels and 26" rear wheels. The Kenda Kwest tires they come with will work great on the road.
I used this one: https://www.amazon.com/Resistant-Rechargeable-Taillight-Mountain-Children/dp/B00UL8H08Q/ref=pd_cp_200_1?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=B00UL8H08Q&pd_rd_r=2MSZ31HVX49MNWYBQ7X1&pd_rd_w=aBOwm&pd_rd_wg=LbQ94&psc=1&refRID=2MSZ31HVX49MNWYBQ7X1
But pretty much all of the bike mounts somehow eventually attach to the seatpost. So I made this as the same diameter as a seat post (which is almost universally 27.2mm) and a little longer than an inch tall.
I would be tempted to get him an air horn. I am thinking this one. It has five different sounds and is wonderfully annoying to adults. Every kid loves to annoy the adults. Also people would hear him coming.
A loud horn has saved my butt a few times when drivers aren't watching. http://www.amazon.com/Delta-Airzound-Bike-Horn-colors/dp/B000ACAMJC
Second the mirror, highly recommend this one: http://www.amazon.com/Bike-Peddler-Cycling-Eyeglass-Mirror/dp/B001VTQNVO I got it for $16 at my LBS, I've had it a week now and wonder how I got along without one.
Sorry to hear about the crash.
Check out the Performer JC70AL. It is the best performance/$ out there by a long shot.
