If I use an Xbox or newer dual shock 5, it doesn’t work..... acts like a charger
this is not entirely true...
I have an off brand controller that I use both wired and wirelessly.
the caveat is that for wireless operation, I MUST USE THE SONY DONGLE. A generic bluetooth adapter will not work with the remoteplay app even though windows detects it fine.

When you say your "PS4 pro dual shock" "didn't work at all", do you mean that you couldn't use the controller at all, for anything, or that you got this error when launching Remote Play? I have a USB-C to Micro-USB OTG cable and while the controller does seem to connect correctly, because I can use the buttons to navigate my home screen, I can't use it with Remote Play, and get the error screen I linked above.
