I have two Ring Pro video doorbells connected to a mechanical chime. I ran brand new doorbell wire to support this installation. I started by using the 16V 10VA transformer that came with the chime.
That worked successfully for a couple of weeks. But then one of the Ring Pro's started going offline due to low voltage.
To solve this problem, I purchased a multiple voltage transformer that could provide either 8V, 16V, or 24V @ 20VA. I started by configuring the transformer to output 16V. The Ring Pros were happy with this setting (that is to say that they didn't go offline anymore due to low voltage). However, in this configuration, my mechanical chime was vibrating constantly (that is, when I removed the chime's cover, I could see that one of the chime "pistons" was continuously moving up and down).
I then changed the transformer to output 24V, and I'm happy to report that everything is now working perfectly. Ring Pros are happy with the voltage, and the chime does not vibrate.
Problem solved!
This is the transformer I'm using:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001PO7MY2/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Hope this helps.
I'm in the same boat. According to this guy, it doesn't look like it fits quite right.
https://www.reddit.com/r/ringdoorbell/comments/6qsi0j/video_doorbell_2_wedge_kit/
I found this one on Amazon that says it's compatible with the 2, but I'm not sold on the slide mechanism it uses and am looking for other possible options.
https://www.amazon.com/ADJUSTABLE-Doorbell-Original-Homono-Adjustment/dp/B076KRKV8Y
Edit: I called their support line, and they seemed confused that there wasn't a corner wedge in the box, and are sending me a wedge for free. Yay. But looking at the box, there clearly isn't space for a wedge. This is some newer "Ring 2 + Chime" box deal from Costco, and I'm pretty sure whoever designed it decided to just not include the wedges. I found an unboxing video online so you can compare what the standard Ring 2 box looks like compared to this:
https://imgur.com/a/XE9i0
This box wasn't very well thought out. There is a little bag of screws underneath the battery, and a little bag of screws underneath the Ring, but no screws were put in the blue hardware box that has plenty of free space.
I just bought mine and had a similar issue as yours. I figured out that it wasn't getting enough juice even though it was the minimum required to run the doorbell. It would constantly be good voltage during the day but once it hit night time and night vision kicked in it would freeze up and disconnect. Ring recommend I upgrade my transformer and provided me with the Amazon link since the one they sell was sold out. I bought It and so far the Ring doorbell been has running flawless with no issues such as freezes or disconnects.
Link in case you wanted to try.
https://www.amazon.com/NuTone-C907-16V-30VA-Transformer/dp/B001POBN92/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1522996843&sr=8-2&keywords=16v+20va
Added note for the issue if having to go and buy a new transformer. Ring issued me a free chime which was cool of them.
Hi.Thanks for your reply. I have actually tried both solutions. The picture that you see above is already using 2 wedge kits. I have also used IFTTT to automate my front porch lights to open when it detects motion but this is not helpful.
The picture I posted above is not a great example because the sun is not very bright. I have other examples where it is very hard to discern the face when the sun is out.
I hope you can develop a software solution to the backlighting.
But I also hope you can help us out by researching on LED Wireless Motion Sensing Night Light we can use to provide some sort of fill in lighting. There is a ton of these in Amazon but the problem is that I need them to work during the daytime but I can't disable the light sensor on these things because they seem to be incorporated with the motion sensor. And I hate to personally order and return these things to Amazon if they don't work for me.
So I was hoping you guys can do the research for us and give recommendations as to what a good model to buy is.
Here is a good example of these things:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01N5NKTQ9/ref=psdc_3736741_t1_B06XC8YRGR
I firmly believe in set it and forget it. If I have to charge the thing I have a feeling it would be discharged that time I need it to be charged, and I didn’t get around to charging it. To me it’s like intentionally installing a new chore for someone to have to do.
If you really want to go with 2 then I would only do it with this solar accessory:
https://shop.ring.com/products/solar-charger-2-for-video-doorbell-2
I think Pro is better for two reasons:
I have a similar door/walkway/doorbell setup.
I used the following accessory to place in the original doorbell location with a better viewing angle. Basically mine is installed in the corner between your door and the current location of your doorbell.
Adjustable Ring Video Doorbell Pro Angle Mount (30 to 55 degree),CAVN Angle Adapter Mounting Plate Bracket Wedge Corner Kit for Ring Video Doorbell Pro ( Released in 2016), White https://www.amazon.com/dp/B078RKKXMQ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_tai_i_hoJdBb4VMN9QH
Works great in my opinion and it is very economical.
Ring has one but I think it more expensive than this one.
Here is a video that shows my angle:
https://ring.com/share/6560670520123342632
Good luck.
So a bit more information. I took some time to check all my wires and they all look good from what I can tell.
A few notes: Our ring is pretty warm to the touch. I don't know if that's normal.
Anytime I check the device health, for voltage it's always green. I've never seen it be anything else.
Our condo is at least 30 years old and I would guess the doorbell wiring is about the same.
When we got the ring, I ended up getting a new Doorbell chime, this one: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000VH5ILI/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1 and even though it came with a transformer, I didn't use it. I had forgotten that til this morning when I was checking thing. The existing one was rated with enough power so I left it. But more than that, I didn't know how to replace the old one due to its location. (See photo below.) The transformer is located in our hot water heater, just outside the front door.
I'm now wondering if I need to somehow install the new transformer after all. The question is how?
Imgur
Thanks for any help.
Sure. You'll need housings to existing floodlights that accept a BR30 or PAR38 bulb first. I have like four pre-exsiting Red Dot floodlights in bronze that came installed on my house, so I was already good. The Ring Floodlight and Red Dot have bulb housings that share an industry standard 3/4" thread that will screw into each other.
With the Ring floodlight cam you'll need to Uncrimp and unscrew the puck shaped transformer attached to the inside of the floodlight. Now there are three wires coming off the cam: Black, White and Red. Two wires coming off the bulb housings each: Black and white. And the three wires coming from the wall: Black, white, green.
Connect the black cam wire to the hot (black) wire coming from the wall.
Connect all of the white (neutrals) wires together.
Connect the red lead cam wire to the remaining black wires coming off bulb housings.
Green wire to ground at the housing.
Pic here: https://imgur.com/a/Dl25QDB
And that's it! Everything else works the same. You'll just now have the option to turn on the cam lights and change the color if you want. But they will go back to white when triggered by the motion sensor if woken from a powered-off state.
THIS!!! Not only "fast" enough but make sure there is adequate signal. I have added a Unifi AP (similar to https://www.amazon.com/Enterprise-System-UBIQUITI-NETWORKS-UAP-LR/dp/B00HXT8S9G ) and that make my experience w/ Ring more enjoyable. I have a ring 2 doorbell, floodlight cam, and a spotlight cam w/ solar panel charger.
I'll let the more electrically inclined reply, I just know from an older discussion about this. I think you were able to test somewhere on the chime itself? I would recommend getting a bigger transformer either way. This one works perfectly and provides plenty of power:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001POBN92/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o05_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Seems like you have a small transformer. It looks like it says 5VA which is small. Get one that is 30VA and outputs 16vac. Like this one NuTone C907 16V, 30VA Transformer https://www.amazon.com/dp/B001POBN92/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_hA1KAb4T9SPQY
That's the first step. Then see if your ring pro can function properly.
Worse case you can install a second transformer. It's like $10 for the transformer and like $2-5 for the doorbell wire
Edit: you can even get something like this to make it even easier for you to install. It connects right to an outlet. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0010PKVMQ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_awdb_SVjAybR23EBCR
For #1 I used switch guards which work out well, one side has a small opening that you can turn it on/off if needed
https://www.amazon.com/Amertac-CSG1-White-Switch-Guard/dp/B0041532P0
For #2 you would probably need to rewire it to a separate switch. If messing around with electricity isn't your thing you could probably find a smart lightbulb solution, my porch lights are Phillips hue br30's with the motion detection accessory (it's been about a year no issues, just make sure they don't get wet or are outdoor rated)
Any recommendations on brand? It looks like Amazon has some 24v 40va . I do have a mechanical chime. I installed one that was on rings approved chime list.
Honeywell AT140A1000 40Va, 120V Transformer - 60 Hz.
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000K2EC7K/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_1RY-zb9XPR2M7
Since our family room is at the back of the house, yes! I use the PTZ quite often. It's on a corner mount, on the garage, about 14 feet up, out front. It covers quite well, and is very noticeable to others (which I like). One day, I could hear what turned out to be a pickup truck idling in front of my house, but off to the side, which made no sense. I tapped the PTZ preset for that position. As soon as I did, he sped off. It records 24/7 to a Synology NAS. Mine is this one, without the audio feature:
SUNBA 601-D20X IP PoE+ High Speed PTZ Outdoor Security Camera, 20x Optical Zoom HD 1080P ONVIF with Audio and Night Vision up to 800ft https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01HTYW2Q4/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_gmSZzb0SC2JH0
If you go that route I'd recommend this.
Basically turn off the circuit breaker for it, unscrew, then wire nut the two wires in. Like AstroZombie said if you have some electrical experience it's not difficult.
Here is the one I got: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001POBN92/ref=ox_sc_act_title_2?smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER&psc=1
Hope the install goes well!
Lowe's model: https://www.lowes.com/pd/Utilitech-Multi-Color-Doorbell-Transformer/3482857
The one many people here prefer:
NuTone C907 16V, 30VA Transformer https://www.amazon.com/dp/B001POBN92/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_UAz-AbJNKY54Y
I personally went to Lowe's since I could return it if it didn't work. Mines been great though.
I also have a Ring Pro and a 16V, 10VA transformer that isn't providing enough power to even allow the Pro to power up.
I've purchased a 16 Volt, 30VA transformer (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001R5UU0W/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1)
However, I also have cloth bound wires. Was curious if anyone has any thoughts on using these type of wires with a 16 Volt, 30VA transformer and if it's any concern. This is also making the assumption that the cloth is intact throughout the lines, which what i've seen is the case.
Yepp! that would work. Here is one that I can personally recommend as well: https://www.amazon.com/Scotch-Permanent-Outdoor-Mounting-4011-LONG/dp/B000BL5INM
I use this one: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B075CTPZW6/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_04LQAb367PJ8W
That one's 40VA, but 1000mA is more than enough power.
Worked with my Ring 2 before I switched to Nest.
Yes, it is. Take a look at a random, high demand electronic device https://www.amazon.com/Apple-iPhone-Plus-Unlocked-Phone/product-reviews/B06XTKMWV9/ref=cm_cr_dp_d_show_all_top?ie=UTF8&reviewerType=avp_only_reviews
17% are 1 star
or here, https://www.amazon.com/Samsung-Galaxy-S8-Unlocked-64GB/product-reviews/B06Y14T5YW/ref=cm_cr_dp_d_show_all_top?ie=UTF8&reviewerType=avp_only_reviews
14% are 1 star and over 20% would be considered critical.
Like I said already, people are most likely to not leave a review at all if they are happy with their purchase. The people leaving great reviews are apparently so happy with their purchase they break from the norm and leave their glowing reviews and the critical reviews come from the minority that have had problems. And there are a far larger percentage of the unhappy customers that will leave a review than any of the other groups.
Another one:
CMVision IR130 198 LED Indoor/Outdoor Long Range 300-400ft IR Illuminator With Free 3A 12VDC Adaptor https://www.amazon.com/dp/B004F9LF7E/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_Xd-Izb1Y0NRZM
I don't know the proper wavelength for the Ring.
Yes, thats high. my cams that work without issues are in the 40s.
I was using this prior: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00KWHMR6G/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1
I have this now:
https://www.amazon.com/TP-Link-Deco-Whole-System-3-Pack/dp/B06WVCB862/ref=sr_1_3?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1526500133&sr=1-3&keywords=tp+link+deco
This is the one that I ordered.
NuTone C907 16V, 30VA Transformer https://www.amazon.com/dp/B001POBN92
The one you listed above showed 20-30VA so I thought I would go with a single voltage transformer that had only 30VA. I am glad to hear it is working for you though.
thanks for posting this, I have the same issue as OP for #1, and i think this might fix it.
although that one is pricey I will probably find a cheaper one
Anyone needing a good 16V doorbell transformer should get this:
https://www.amazon.com/NuTone-C907-16V-30VA-Transformer/dp/B001POBN92/
It is 30 Watts instead of the standard 10 watts you find at big-box stores.
I got this at the recommendation of Ring customer support based on my physical doorbell model: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001POBN92/
Actually, most recommended transformers are around 45VA: https://www.amazon.com/ELK-TRG1640-AC-Transformer-16-5VAC/dp/B0010PKVMQ
That is correct, I went with this nutone https://www.amazon.com/dp/B001POBN92/?ref=exp_loc_pl_proedgebikercom and both of my chimes work in my house. Dont worry about the wires hooked to the trans, the rest of the wiring that splits off come off the chime to the next.
Purchase a 30va 16v transformer from Amazon. That will solve the low voltage issue. Worked for me and solved the problem. The issue is amps not voltage on the line.
This is the one to buy from amazon. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001POBN92/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
I didn’t measure the voltage. I bought this.
https://www.amazon.com/NuTone-C909-Tri-Volt-Transformer-Chime/dp/B001PO7MY2
It’s plugged into the 16v 20va section. That was the set my doorbell transformer was originally plugged into.
https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B0010PKVMQ/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
This is what I use with my Ring Doorbell Pro
Maybe double check that your mechanical doorbell can handle 24V. Mine said 16V, so I ended up getting this 16V transformer
I recommend going to a 24V-30VA or a 24V-40VA transformer to avoid any problems.
Amazon link:
Honeywell AT140A1000 40Va, 120V Transformer - 60 Hz. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000K2EC7K/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_iVwMBbFHRZPVD
Some have stated that you really need a 30VA transformer for a ring pro connected to a mechanical chime. I had problems with freezing when the doorbell was rung but that all went away when I upgraded my transformer to this one:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001POBN92/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o09_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
It appears if the voltage on the Ring Pro drops too low when ringing the doorbell, it turns this setting off. I fixed the issue by replacing my 16V 10VA transformer with a 16V 30VA transformer. 16V 30VA Transformer on Amazon
